Chapter 8 System Livestream

The man let out a dry laugh upon hearing this, then abruptly snatched the entire stack of documents from the desk and flung them to the floor with a grim expression.

Papers instantly fluttered throughout the office. The woman scanned the fingerprint lock of the refrigerated safe, retrieved a small vial of injection, and tossed it onto the metal desktop: “What’s all the fuss? Withdrawal acting up again?”

The glass casing of the vial emitted a crisp tapping sound. Inside was a transparent liquid that glowed with an eerie fluorescence, distinct from the viscous nutrient agents it appeared to be some kind of highly concentrated extract.

Ruan Zihan exhaled heavily, took the syringe, stepped directly onto the sofa with his shoes, and lay down to inject the needle into his inner thigh.

As the entire tube of liquid entered his body, he began to see bar-shaped hallucinations, with all objects swelling and shrinking before his eyes.

He felt as if lifted into mid-air, experiencing the euphoria of weightlessness.

Time became indistinct he stood atop a towering skyscraper, spread his arms, and leaped down in exhilaration…

Click.

An undeniable pain shot through the gaps of his bones; the drug’s effects had worn off.

It was deep night, the world outside the window silent as death. The woman remained hunched over the desk, viewing the external optical computer, a massive headset over her ears, her manicured nails tapping rhythmically to the music’s beat.

Ruan Zihan lay on his back, feeling the pent-up frustration in his chest slightly dissipate.

He picked up the Giant Entertainment brochure from the floor, flipping through it as he asked: “Yingying, how are those songs I asked you to write coming along? Given how frantic they are, Qiao Ankuang’s new song will probably drop in a couple of days. The PR team is drafting the statements we’ll release ours simultaneously.”

“Make sure they sound similar to his track ‘Scorching’ same chord progressions, same lyrical style. Got it?”

Chi Yingying impatiently adjusted her headset: “I’m almost sick of writing them. Can’t believe Qiao Ankuang has sunk to composing such shallow pop tunes these years. Our dozens of stockpiled songs are useless now.”

“I’ve prepared three tracks that are almost identical to ‘Scorching.’ We’ll see which one his new release leans toward. Don’t worry, this time we’ll definitively expose his plagiarism my fans alone can drown him in criticism.”

“But I should remind you they’ve signed both Qiao Ankuang and Tong Qinglu. Plus, all previously used email and communication accounts of their artists have been deactivated and replaced. Clearly, they’re targeting us again. That boss is no simple opponent; there might be more moves ahead.”

Hearing Chi Yingying’s words, Ruan Zihan grew more agitated. He smashed the syringe on the floor, and amid the shattering glass, he couldn’t help but shout: “Again… When will this end…”

Chi Yingying rubbed her temples wearily: “Keep your voice down.”

Ruan Zihan paced a few steps, rapidly scanning the materials three lines at a glance

Just as before, this Giant Entertainment boss seemed to have emerged out of thin air in the Star Federation: no educational records, no family connections, only a covertly recorded video from yesterday’s fan meet.

In the shaky footage, the figure could be seen leaning against the railing of a second-floor balcony, conversing with an assistant. Tall and slender, they carried an undeniable air of aristocratic elegance.

Less than five seconds into filming, the man keenly sensed he was being secretly recorded. He coldly stared down at the lens, then after a long pause, curled his lips into a faint smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

His gaze was chillingly icy. Ruan Zihan felt as if he had locked eyes with the man through the screen from afar. When he snapped back to reality, his back was already damp with cold sweat.

This one would be tougher to handle than any of the previous targets.

He even seemed to have deeper pockets and more cunning tactics than those before.

“Let’s stick to the old method. I refuse to believe he won’t create opportunities for Tong Qinglu,” Ruan Zihan cursed angrily, opening his contact list to send out a brief message.

The next morning, Qiao Ankuang’s account posted an update:

[Sorry to keep you all waiting! My new single will be released at noon sharp today.]

Chi Yingying had just finished shooting a commercial for a beverage brand. Checking the time, she gave her prepared statement one final review.

At noon, Qiao Ankuang’s new song appeared on his account homepage. After listening to it carefully, she selected the first song she had written over the past couple of days and posted it.

When Mr. Qiao released his last song, I still believed in leaving some room for mutual respect little did I know my restraint would only invite more brazen plagiarism!

The chords and lyrics of Mr. Qiao’s newly released “Lying Low” are strikingly similar to my “Awakening.” My creative process dates back to a week ago, and I’ll attach the full recording of my composition under this post.

@Qiao An Kuang, please provide evidence that you didn’t plagiarize, or apologize to me! I’ve endured being treated like your personal song bank for five years I’ve had enough of you repeatedly shearing my work like wool.]

Chi Yingying had built her career on StarNet as a singer-songwriter and had enjoyed years of explosive popularity. The moment she posted this, many fellow artists voiced their support, while her comment section blazed with outrage.

[Goddess, I’ll always stand by you. “Awakening” is far better than “Lying Low.”]

[Last time I called out the plagiarist in SoundHope’s comments and got attacked. He’s been copying you for five years no doubt “Scorching” was also ‘borrowed’ from somewhere.]

[Qiao Ankuang, get out of Star Entertainment! Music patchworker, get out of Star Entertainment![@Qiao An Kuang, stop pretending to be dead. Come apologize instead of a new song, you should be posting a statement of apology.]

[From now on, let’s all skip videos that use “Scorching” as background music. Don’t give a single cent in royalties to this thief!]

[Some people are so lucky they can finish a song with just three keys: Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. Smooth combo. And those who enjoy such stitched-together songs… well, they’re something else.]

Coinciding with the weekend, the backlash escalated within hours into a full-blown campaign to drive Qiao Ankuang out of the entertainment industry.

Yingying’s fans organized mass reporting campaigns, even lodging complaints against Giant Entertainment with the Star Federation’s Association of Talent Agencies.

As time passed, the tension in the factory became palpable.

A corner of the former Giant Mechanical Factory had been converted into a massive circular screen, monitoring public sentiment across platforms 24/7.

The enlarged text comments pricked at everyone’s conscience like needles, but no one in the factory spoke. All were waiting for that crucial instruction.

The air was thick with silence, like athletes quietly counting down before a hundred-meter race, waiting only for the final starting gun.

Fang Zhuo sat on the sofa in front of the screen, spending most of his time studying various Star Federation policies related to the entertainment industry on his Light Brain, only occasionally glancing up at the screen.

He could sense the slightly anxious atmosphere around him. Unlike the nervousness of those beside him, he was solely focused on whether the public opinion manipulated by the other side had reached its irrational peak.

Just as Qiao Ankuang was about to step out for some fresh air for the sixth time, Fang Zhuo stopped him, tilting his chin slightly. “You can post it now.”

His voice wasn’t loud, but several staff members immediately sprang into action upon hearing him.

[@Qiao Ankuang: Sorry, I was too careless. I just woke up from a nap and realized I posted the wrong version earlier accidentally uploaded the initial draft.

I’ve now corrected it to the final version and simultaneously uploaded it to the Cloud Music Platform. To make it up to everyone, here’s a beautifully crafted MV for your viewing pleasure.]

[@Star Federation Gulan Star Music Museum: To appreciate the elegance of ancient melodies and the beauty of heavenly music, we sincerely invite everyone to enjoy @Qiao Ankuang’s new song “Latent.”]

It was only then that the fans who had been fervently cheering for their goddess Yingying realized that the initial version Qiao Ankuang had posted on the StarNet at noon hadn’t actually been uploaded to the Cloud Music Platform he had fooled every single one of them.

And when they opened the MV, they were stunned to find that the music inside differed drastically from the initial version.

It began with the solemn sound of chime bells, like ancient melodies echoing from a thousand years ago, accompanied by the mournful harmony of sheng and xiao, while breathtaking drumbeats struck the eardrums of every listener.

Even more astonishing was that the scenes in the MV contained almost no public footage the vast majority were shot on location.

The opening scene featured a finger guiding a slowly rotating overhead shot. The audience descended alongside fluttering scrolls of calligraphy and painting, swaying in the wind, into a magnificent main hall. They watched as the hand casually struck the chime bells, as if following closely behind an ancient musician, listening as she unveiled the millennia-old, long-buried music.

Forget the direct cost of producing this MV most people had never even seen the instruments featured in it, let alone owned them, as they were nearly impossible to buy, regardless of wealth.

The entire video was only four minutes long, but every second exuded an aura of lavish spending. Whether it was the sweeping crane shots descending from above or the opulent musician’s workshop, the production precision and scene construction were nothing short of Star Entertainment’s finest.

The first reaction of casual viewers wasn’t even to accuse anyone of plagiarism but to marvel at the production company’s unwavering dedication, seemingly regardless of cost.

After this brief ten-minute vacuum in public discourse, a well-known music critic posted an update:

[@A Kai Listens to Music: Many fans have privately asked me to compare the audio tracks of the final version of “Latent” and “Awakening.” As a treat for my followers, I’ll be going live in five minutes for a brief review of these two trending songs to determine whether plagiarism is involved.]

Jiang Yu, holding a portable physical Light Brain, reminded him, “Director Fang, Mr. A Kai only agreed to accept a symbolic fee of one thousand from us. He said he must remain responsible to the music and his fans, and we cannot influence his final comparison results.”

Fang Zhuo nodded slightly, indicating that he understood.

He projected the music video of “Lying Low,” A Kai’s livestream, the latest comment sections under Qiao Ankuang and Chi Yingying’s posts, and the public opinion squares discussing the plagiarism accusations against both songs onto the massive circular screen before him.

Instantly, the entire screen split into six or seven sections, with countless comments flooding in like a barrage of bullet comments.

This corner remained unlit, and in the darkness, the circular screen encircled his entire field of vision without reservation. Information streamed rapidly across Fang Zhuo’s eyes one line after another as if he were immersed in a torrent of data composed of countless complex visuals, creating the illusion that he might be sucked into one of those screens at any moment.

He was quite satisfied with this effect.

[A little bit, please activate the system livestream for me.]
