Chapter 3 New Song Premiere

Sudden calls for all employees to assemble usually never bode well either it’s a company restructuring or large-scale layoffs.

Especially for this struggling, heavily loss-making glass processing factory. The workers’ first reaction upon hearing the news was to go back and pack their belongings, ready to leave at any moment.

“Sigh, the factory was just acquired less than two months ago. I haven’t even gotten familiar with the equipment yet, and it’s already going under… Little Jiang, you’re the sharpest among us. Where are you planning to go next?”

Jiang Yu sighed, roughly wiping his neck with a towel. “To a neighboring star. The Federation recently introduced policies to vigorously develop several remote tourist planets. I expect there’ll be more construction work there.”

Old Li gave him a thumbs-up. “Still the smart one.”

At half past ten, all workers were seated in rows on benches inside the factory. Just as everyone was waiting in a despondent atmosphere, a Private Cloud Array suddenly descended outside.

Public transportation in the Federation was highly developed, with Cloud Rail networks covering even the most remote planets. Only the wealthy could afford private aircraft.

Witnessing the boss suddenly become rich while simultaneously shutting down the factory and laying off workers immediately darkened the workers’ expressions.

Someone spat in disgust. “These big bosses never give us ordinary employees an extra cent, even when they strike it rich.”

“Hey, do you think we’ll get any compensation for the factory closure?”

“How could that be? It was already a miracle we got our back pay cleared yesterday. The factory’s been running for less than two months compensation? Don’t even dream about it. Not even white-collar workers from big companies on the Primary Star dare hope for such benefits.”

A tall man emerged from the Private Cloud Array backlit, his face so handsome that even the rough-handed laborers could tell he was extraordinary.

Jiang Yu frowned, trying to remember, but found he couldn’t recall the first time he’d seen the boss at all.

[Ding. Terminal received 5,000 credits]

Jiang Yu looked up in shock to see the boss approaching him. “Everyone has been waiting for a long time. Young man, could you do a headcount and buy everyone some drinks? Keep the change for yourself.”

With only about a hundred workers in the factory, Jiang Yu didn’t dare delay. He immediately purchased some snacks and cold drinks via the StarNet, distributing them to everyone upon delivery, keeping only a few dozen credits for himself.

The man stepped onto the stage, handling the microphone with practiced ease that made the old, worn-out factory feel like a thriving top hundred company.

As the saying goes, you don’t hit a smiling face. Holding the ice-cold drinks provided by the boss, the workers’ agitation instantly soothed. Even Jiang Yu, with all his street smarts, had to admit the boss’s interpersonal skills were truly top-notch.

“Hello everyone, I’m Fang Zhuo, general manager of Giant Machinery. As you can see, our factory has been consistently losing money and has reached a critical point where transformation is necessary.”

“The few individuals I name will have their employment contracts transferred with me to the new company, with salary increases according to their positions. The rest of you, please collect three months’ salary as compensation from accounting.”

Fang Zhuo’s vision was filled with a complex array of numerical values. With a quick scan, he promptly selected over a dozen workers from below who excelled in both intelligence and emotional quotient attributes.

To be fair, although his predecessor had left behind a mess, it had indeed saved him a lot of trouble  at least all the employees had remarkably high physical stamina compared to ordinary people.

He then shifted his tone: “The new company will temporarily continue operating in this factory building. In a couple of days, technicians will come to install new air circulation systems and furniture. Please trust me  I will lead everyone in building a better company. We will break out of Planet 139, and one day we’ll make our name known throughout the entire Star Federation.”

He concluded by raising a clenched fist in a brief, powerful gesture.

The entire speech lasted less than five minutes. The workers below were first stunned by the enormous compensation package, then erupted into thunderous applause.

They had only worked here for two months, yet were receiving three months’ salary as severance pay. Had any other factory owner shut down operations after getting rich, the workers would certainly have protested. But this compensation felt like manna from heaven, instantly soothing all their resentment.

As one of the chosen lucky ones, Jiang Yu stood up and applauded enthusiastically, his face flushed with excitement.

Though the boss’s ambitions sounded grand, no one voiced any doubts.

Among those selected were manual laborers like Jiang Yu and inconspicuous procurement staff from the factory office yet everyone now felt surging motivation to take immediate action.

Witnessing the boss’s conviction and attitude, Jiang Yu genuinely believed he would lead them out of this poor, remote industrial planet.

Even A Little Bit got swept up in the excitement: [Host, I almost want to apply for a job under you!]

Fang Zhuo: [Aren’t you already working for me?]

A Little Bit paused: [Right… Wait, something feels off though.]

Contrary to the frequent worker riots that usually occurred on Planet 139, this time most workers happily accepted their compensation and left. The entire layoff process was completed efficiently within just one hour, while retained employees promptly received new training materials.

“What’s your name?”

“Jiang Yu.” He immediately stood up. Though he never attended college, the introductory marketing handbook distributed by the boss wasn’t difficult to understand he’d already finished most of it.

“Xiao Jiang, you’re a good kid. I have high expectations for you, and I want to assign you a special task.”

“Our company will release a new single the day after tomorrow. Contact choreography influencers on Sound Hope Platform now and send them the demo tomorrow evening in advance. Have them create a roughly 20-second dance routine for the song.”

“Also find micro-influencers with over 100k followers have them publish content using the new song’s hashtag first thing the day after tomorrow. Both music and beauty sections are acceptable. Offer 20% above their standard commercial rates.”

“The total budget for the first round of promotion is two million. Process payments directly under the company account. Just inform me if you accidentally exceed the budget.”

SoundHope was the largest short video platform on StarNet, where many nostalgic old songs gained renewed popularity through creative adaptations. In this fast-paced era, this was arguably the most direct and effective promotion method.

Jiang Yu immediately understood the boss’s intentions. He meticulously recorded all requirements in his Light Brain and nodded firmly: “Understood, Director Fang.”

Interacting with people was one of his greatest strengths, and Jiang Yu felt no pressure at all from these tasks.

Moreover, he had been selected by the boss from hundreds of candidates to join the new company and was further chosen among the best to undertake a special new assignment. His chest now swelled with ambition, focused solely on executing the tasks assigned by the boss flawlessly.

With one day left until the submission deadline, Fang Zhuo knocked on Qiao Ankuang’s door once again.

The mess inside was even worse than the last time. Qiao Ankuang’s hair was slightly greasy, but his eyes sparkled: “Director Fang, you’ve come at the perfect time. Let me play the demo for you first see if you like it.”

He clicked on the file named “Scorching” on his Light Brain desktop, and instantly, a catchy, rhythmic, and dynamic melody filled the room.

According to the original description in “Brilliance,” Qiao Ankuang was supposed to excel in epic, grand compositions and occasionally write lively lyrical tunes in his spare time. This song, however, had absolutely nothing in common with his previous works.

Fang Zhuo was quite pleased.

He listened to the song three times in a row and found no issues with the auditory experience. Finally, he paused it during the climax: “Teacher Qiao, I’m an amateur and don’t know much about composition, but let me share a simple thought.”

“Could we add a few more strong drumbeats here and make the lyrics a bit more accessible? I’d like the entire song to have a complete, exciting segment of about twenty seconds that can be clipped out.”

Qiao Ankuang patted his chest, showered Director Fang with every compliment he could muster, took a sip of water, and promised, “Don’t worry, Director Fang, leave it to me.”

If he had been transported back five years, his pride might have led him to simmer with frustration toward the client. But after enduring a long period of obscurity and self-doubt, the river of time had gradually polished him into a humble, smooth stone. As long as there was a chance to resurface, Qiao Ankuang was willing to set aside his laughable artistic ambitions even burn everything for it.

“A good song doesn’t pick its singer, Director Fang. Would you like to perform the official version yourself? To be honest, I’m also an amateur sound engineer even if you recited poetry, I could fix it.”

Fang Zhuo subtly shifted away and politely declined the overly enthusiastic invitation.

At ten o’clock that night, Qiao Ankuang promptly sent the final recorded version to the boss’s personal terminal.

By eleven o’clock, two top choreography influencers on the SoundHope Platform had received the twenty-second audio clip. Even that brief segment was enough to catch their attention, and they quickly produced a set of dance moves overnight, sending it to the client’s Light Brain in the early hours.

At nine o’clock the next morning, the song “Scorching” was released on schedule on the Cloud Music Platform, its cover featuring a simple stone enveloped in blazing flames.

The Cloud Music Platform staff reviewed hundreds of songs daily. The reviewer casually clicked on the new release from this unremarkable music company the lyrics were simple, almost tacky, and the composition was strangely addictive. He chuckled, then found himself unconsciously tapping his foot to the beat.

Out of curiosity, he searched online for the creator’s name and discovered that the person was actually a well-known song thief from a few years back. He guessed this track was probably stolen from somewhere too.

He clicked his tongue and shook his head regretfully. What a pity such an interesting song. If it really was plagiarized, he’d have to personally take it down later.

But the review guy waited until evening, and no one stepped forward to expose the plagiarism. In the meantime, “Scorching” had instead gained popularity on the SoundHope Platform.

A choreography video using it as background music went viral immediately after its release. Within just one day, nearly a hundred influencers jumped on the trend with their own dance covers. Music critics also seized the momentum to livestream their reviews, praising “Scorching” for its strong artistic value and exceptional originality.

The buzz on SoundHope, in turn, boosted its ranking on the Cloud Music Platform. By the evening of its release day, it had surpassed new tracks by many established singers and soared into the top three of Cloud Music’s daily chart.

Late into the night, there was still no reversal in public opinion. Instead, the hype grew even stronger  not only did it trend on SoundHope’s hotlist, but it even broke into the top thirty of StarNet’s trending topics.

“Scorching” had gone viral.

“Director Fang, my song is popular! Have you seen it? My song is popular…” Qiao Ankuang couldn’t contain his excitement. He boldly called Fang Zhuo, his voice trembling and choked with emotion, repeating the same phrase over and over in exhilaration.

He was like a man dying of thirst who had finally found water someone who hadn’t collapsed in the darkness before dawn but had held on long enough to see his own light.

“How did he get popular? How could Qiao Ankuang’s song blow up like this? Explain to me  what’s going on?” At the same time as that call, in a luxurious office on the Primary Star, a man was openly venting his anger at a pale-faced woman.

“Didn’t I tell you to keep a close watch on him? Investigate which agency would sign a disgraced artist with such a notorious reputation? Which clueless company released his song?!”

“Don’t wait until tomorrow. Push the negative press tonight cut off his momentum now. I refuse to believe the audience has no memory.”
