Bai Zhou had heard before that those who practiced divination, by peering into heavenly secrets and changing the original course of things, would suffer backlash.

But he had never expected that his disciple would accidentally touch upon this level.

Feeling the moist fog on his body, Bai Zhou was suddenly grateful that he only understood some superficial aspects of immortality.

“Go notify the villagers that the method of immortality must be kept secret, and don’t continue researching it. Make the seriousness of the fog clear to them!” Bai Zhou instructed.

His disciple also realized the seriousness of the problem at this time and immediately ran to notify the others.

Bai Zhou sat in the house, his mind spinning rapidly, but he had never encountered a similar situation before.

No one had ever successfully avoided heaven’s backlash, especially such a materialized backlash.

It had actually transformed into fog to hunt them down?

“What exactly did my disciple research?”

His disciple soon ran back.

“Master, I’ve finished notifying them.”

Reaching out, Bai Zhou wiped the water mist from the table in front of him.

He found some tool models he had once made for teaching in the house and discovered that these models had also unknowingly become covered with mold spots.

Moreover, these mold spots had all appeared in very crucial places, or weak points, as if specifically meant to destroy these tools.

Bai Zhou stared blankly at these models, his heart filled with shock.

“The pursuit of immortality brings disaster?”

These fogs seemed to have no harmful effects on the Chali Tribe either, only attacking tools and obscuring vision. Why would they have such strange characteristics?

“We can’t just wait like this.” Bai Zhou immediately realized that these fogs seemed to be hindering them.

“Alright, come with me. Let’s see the range of influence of this fog.”

He brought his disciple to the shore and boarded the small fishing boat.

But as soon as they got on the boat, the surrounding fog began churning violently.

Fog condensed at the edges of the fishing boat, seeming to want to drag the boat toward shore.

“What’s happening?”

Steeling his heart, Bai Zhou untied the fishing boat’s rope and rushed toward the sea, plunging headlong into the churning fog.

As expected, Bai Zhou’s behavior triggered a violent reaction from the fog. The surrounding fog suddenly intensified, becoming so thick it turned black, constantly rolling and rushing toward the small fishing boat, surging over Bai Zhou and his disciple.

Immediately, everything went pitch black before Bai Zhou’s eyes.

“Close your eyes! Keep rowing forward!” Bai Zhou shouted.

“Master, I can’t see,” came only his disciple’s anxious voice through the tree roots.

He also closed his eyes and desperately rowed the oars. He just wanted to see what this fog actually intended to do.

In complete darkness, his hearing became abnormally sensitive. He could hear the whooshing wind and the creaking sounds of the fishing boat.

Bai Zhou ignored these sounds and continued rowing forward.

But soon, he heard even stranger sounds.

It was as if something was circling the small fishing boat, swimming underwater.

That thing seemed extremely large, with the sound of water flow surrounding them, constantly drilling into Bai Zhou’s eardrums.

From time to time, that thing would lightly bump the small boat. Sticky skin hit the wooden hull, making dull sounds, then slickly scraped past, softly bouncing away into the distance.

In an instant, enormous fear appeared in Bai Zhou’s heart.

“Are you running away?”

Suddenly, a voice appeared beside Bai Zhou.

Who!

Bai Zhou was so startled he almost opened his eyes.

He hadn’t heard wrong, someone was talking to him.

That was… a little girl?

After realizing who the voice belonged to, a figure suddenly appeared in Bai Zhou’s mind—

That burned little girl with only half a skull remaining.

Although Bai Zhou clearly had his eyes closed, he could clearly see that little girl sitting quietly beside him, staring fixedly at him.

“Why did you run away by yourself without taking me?”

The little girl looked at him and said with slight reproach.

Bai Zhou’s heart was about to jump out of his chest. Water vapor had soaked his clothes, and a chill penetrated his body.

“I buried you, buried you. You should rest in peace…”

He rowed hard while muttering.

Hearing Bai Zhou’s words, the little girl tilted her head and stared at Bai Zhou for a long time.

Then, two charred little hands propped themselves up, supporting what remained of half a jaw.

“I can’t sleep.”

“Even if you can’t sleep, you have to sleep!” Bai Zhou cursed angrily.

“But I’m so hot.”

The little girl straightened her body, raised her two little hands, then silently lowered her head…

She placed her hands on her chest and suddenly tore it open.

At the center of her chest was a wound that had been pierced through. Even amid all that charred blackness, it was clearly visible.

Blazing sparks suddenly gushed from the wound, floating into the air.

Bai Zhou felt a wave of heat hit his face.

But the little girl didn’t seem inclined to stop. Following the wound, she continued tearing her body open.

Inside were red-hot coals and bursting sparks. The high temperature instantly evaporated the originally cold, damp fog.

“It’s not finished burning yet…”

The little girl looked at her chest and said calmly.

Feeling that bursting heat, Bai Zhou didn’t know if his eyes were irritated by the drastically changing temperature, but an irrepressible flow of tears streamed from his eye slits, mixing with the water vapor on his face.

His eyes hurt unbearably…

“It will be extinguished, it will be extinguished,” he mumbled.

“Good.”

The little girl looked at him, half her mouth grinning in a smile, then disappeared.

The high temperature in front of him instantly vanished. The fog continued surging upward, and the cold dampness once again occupied Bai Zhou’s body.

Rowing the oars with all his might, despite constantly moving, Bai Zhou felt no heat at all. He only felt his body growing colder and colder.

That thing under the boat was still constantly swimming, the collision sounds becoming more and more obvious, and the small fishing boat was shaking more and more violently.

“Keep rowing!” Bai Zhou shouted.

His body buried in the fog, waves splashed onto the small fishing boat. Bai Zhou felt like he was soaking in water.

Suddenly, that underwater thing seemed to seize its last chance and slammed up hard.

Bai Zhou, already extremely weak, could no longer grip the oars tightly and fell heavily onto the fishing boat.

In his daze, he only heard anxious voices coming from the tree roots coiled around him:

“Master! Master!”

That voice called anxiously, and a figure came to his side, gently patting his face.

Finally, there was a bit of warmth.

Bai Zhou opened his eyes. His disciple was crouching in front of him, looking at him with worry.

Around them were only gentle sounds of waves, and the fog had also calmed down.

Bai Zhou lay in the center of the small boat and asked weakly, “Disciple, did we leave the island?”

His disciple shook his head.

“We came back again, Master…”
