At first, those cracking sounds were very faint.

Gradually, these sounds came from all directions.

Mo Ling felt some kind of fragments hit his armor. Reaching out to grab them, these fragments were like some kind of shattered glass.

These fragments were crawling with pitch-black rust debris, their originally clean surfaces covered with black spots.

“What is this?”

Mo Ling held these fragments, examining them.

“Where did they come from?”

He looked up and saw a shocking scene.

The protective shield wrapping the entire fortress was continuously crumbling, with black fog twisting and pouncing on the fortress.

Under the armor’s see-through function, dangerous red light emanated everywhere, very dazzling, making Mo Ling somewhat dizzy. Mo Ling knew that was the omnipresent fog.

Just then, a notification window popped up in the red light, startling Mo Ling.

“Superior account logged out, automatically elevating permission level, weapon restrictions removed.”

Mo Ling was first stunned, then quickly reacted.

“Superior account logged out, automatically elevating permission level, movement restrictions removed.”

“Superior account logged out, automatically elevating permission level, mute lifted.”

Mute lifted?

Before he could be happy, another pile of notification windows popped out.

“Ding! Ding! Ding ding ding~ ding ding ding ding ding!”

Accompanied by loud notification sounds that made Mo Ling’s head somewhat dizzy.

“I can speak again?”

The originally glowing runic lines were quickly severed, components instantly paralyzed, stuck between other intact components.

Swaying black tentacles gently caressed the components making up the armor, and ancient rust quickly covered the runic carved marks.

Armor that could move flexibly just moments ago instantly became immobilized prisons. The mermen had to quickly abandon those damaged components and rapidly transfer with the still-usable components.

However, strangely, these black fogs seemed to have no interest in Mo Ling’s armor at all.

These fogs also weren’t as violent as when attacking the mermen, remaining incredibly quiet beside Mo Ling.

Mo Ling’s restricted version armor didn’t even have a protective shield, but when these fogs drifted past him, they just passed by like passersby, flowing around the armor’s surface without any disturbance.

While the mermen were too busy to take care of themselves at this time. Those fogs even broke through the protective shields on their armor, drilling inward and covering their armor.

Obviously his armor’s surface was also covered by fog, but there were no rust marks at all, and the runic carved marks were also completely intact.

When the fog first erupted violently, various cries for help could still be heard in the communication channel, but as the mermen’s armor was damaged one by one, the sounds became increasingly blurred until they disappeared.

Under a sea of red light, Mo Ling could only hear chaotic running sounds around him. From time to time someone would bump into him. Before long, the surroundings fell into silence, and the fish swarm channel was also dead quiet.

“Superior account logged out, automatically elevating permission level, control range upgraded.”

“Superior account logged out…”

“Guest 500, you now have maximum permissions! Please issue commands…”

Mo Ling’s cube head was full of “ding ding ding” sounds that couldn’t stop for a long time.

“Guest 500, please quickly select component patrol mode, designate subordinate account permissions, too many permission vacancies…”

After a flurry of pop-ups, Mo Ling discovered the operation interface before him had undergone earth-shaking changes. Various functions had been completely unlocked, and even fortress control functions had completely opened permissions to him.

However, when he tried it, the current dragon fortress couldn’t be controlled, showing too much damage and requiring maintenance.

After coming to his senses, Mo Ling carefully looked at the pop-ups and realized what had happened.

“I became the highest permission?”

He casually opened a pop-up in front of him and looked at the detailed explanation above.

Only then did he have a sudden realization.

It turned out that the fish swarm system had a backup mechanism. When armor of a certain level was damaged and lost, the permissions of lower-level armor would automatically be elevated, automatically gaining the permissions of the higher-level armor.

This was originally to prevent certain permissions from being uncontrolled after personnel reduction.

Because the fish swarm had clear division of labor, lacking certain necessary job types might lead to serious consequences, so the fish swarm system set up this backup mechanism to prevent vacancies.

But now, all other mermen’s armor was completely damaged, instead allowing Mo Ling’s armor, which originally had “prisoner” permissions, to substitute up level by level, even climbing to the highest commander position.

After seeing this mechanism, Mo Ling was also stunned.

“All other armor exploded?”

Such a situation indicated that all armor above Mo Ling had no survivors. Could that fog really be this powerful?

The armor’s detection screen was now full of dazzling red light, only occasionally catching glimpses of passing mermen figures. Mo Ling wasn’t clear about the current situation either.

Just then, someone suddenly patted Mo Ling’s shoulder from behind.

“Follow me.”

It was actually Bai Zhou’s voice!

Mo Ling turned around and found Bai Zhou’s armor was already severely damaged. He seemed to have spent great effort to walk behind Mo Ling and was now gasping for breath, continuously removing damaged components from his body.

The component on the back of his neck was also seeping blood, but fortunately that component wasn’t damaged and seemed to still be working.

“This way.”

Mo Ling didn’t doubt him and followed Bai Zhou in one direction, going around the fish swarm and winding through various paths to arrive in front of a small mountain.

“Keep walking.”

Although Bai Zhou kept urging, his condition seemed very poor. Not only did the armor on his body impede his progress, but the blood seeping from the component on the back of his neck was increasing.

While following Bai Zhou, Mo Ling was also studying his permissions.

“Wait a moment.” Mo Ling called out to Bai Zhou, then placed his hand on the component on his neck.

A flash of light passed, and that component seemed to start running at accelerated speed, beginning to heal Bai Zhou’s wound.

Then Mo Ling found the function to remove armor control and completely removed those components that had become burdens on Bai Zhou, throwing them on the ground.

“I didn’t find the function to remove this thing.” Mo Ling looked at the component still embedded in Bai Zhou’s neck and said apologetically.

“This thing can’t be removed.” Bai Zhou shook his head helplessly and carefully touched that component with his hand.

Then he looked at Mo Ling with curiosity, “Your armor still works?”

“Yes.” Mo Ling nodded.

“The fog didn’t attack you?” Bai Zhou quickly guessed the reason.

Mo Ling nodded again, “No.”

Hearing Mo Ling’s answer, Bai Zhou looked at him incredulously, his expression gradually changing from curiosity to confusion.

“You should have heard what the mermen said, right? The more you understand immortality, the more you’ll be attacked by the fog.”

“I heard it. What about it?”

“You didn’t understand at all?” Bai Zhou asked with great confusion.

“I understand!” Mo Ling answered very seriously, “You need to use eternal death as the cost. The closer to immortality, the closer to death too…”

Bai Zhou listened while nodding.

However, as he listened, his expression became increasingly strange.

Finally, he interrupted Mo Ling’s lengthy discourse.

“I’m asking you how to achieve immortality.”

“It’s like this…”

“Like what?”

“Like this…”

Mo Ling spoke with less and less confidence, his voice getting smaller and smaller…

Mo Ling fell silent.

He roughly understood why he didn’t trigger the fog
