I’m Trapped in a Cube - Chapter 115
Just as they were thinking, a commotion suddenly broke out in the crowd.
Several robed Hunters let out meaningless angry shouts and rushed at the probe device with their torches.
They’d been discovered!
Though it was unclear how these robed Hunters had detected them, Li Luo decisively abandoned the probe device and retreated into the alley.
However, these robed Hunters were in no hurry, surrounding the mouth of the alley.
Then, one of them suddenly shouted, uttering a strange syllable. Immediately, a rune appeared on his body, transforming into a jet-black pointer that pointed straight at Li Luo’s location.
This black pointer floated above the caster’s head, and as soon as it formed, the robed Hunters surged into the alley with their torches.
What kind of relic was that?
The footsteps grew closer and closer. The black pointer seemed able to precisely locate Li Luo, making escape impossible.
They were clearly very familiar with the residential area, quickly splitting into several groups to block and chase Li Luo, footsteps echoing all around.
Mo Ling was already prepared for battle. Some of the robed figures had entered his field of vision, each holding a torch in one hand and a weapon in the other, clearly hostile.
Just as he was about to attack, a nearby manhole cover to the sewer suddenly opened, and a strange diving helmet popped out.
Enemy? Mo Ling was about to teleport when the person in the diving helmet called out to Li Luo, “Before my bed, the bright moonlight, I suspect it’s frost on the ground! If you can understand, come over here!”
The voice, muffled as if underwater, was odd but perfectly understandable.
“This was a normal person!”
After shouting, the person in the diving helmet jumped back down.
Li Luo hesitated for a moment, then rushed to the manhole.
When she reached the cover, she didn’t jump down immediately but opened the adjacent cover to widen the space, letting Mo Ling go down first.
After the cube floated down, she replaced the cover and slipped into the sewer before the robed Hunters arrived.
“Follow me!” the diving helmet called to Li Luo, waving and running to the other end of the sewer.
Keeping close, Mo Ling realized how complex the sewer was-entirely made from the Black Tower’s original holes, the paths were completely irregular.
Though not as spacious as the residential area above, the tunnels were wide enough for several people to walk side by side.
Light from the residential area filtered through the grates, barely illuminating the way, and, seemingly unused for ages, the sewer was completely dry.
The diving helmet led them to a vertical shaft.
“Go down. Their tracking has a distance limit.” With that, he jumped down without hesitation.
Li Luo hesitated briefly, then jumped down, with Mo Ling following closely.
After a moment of darkness, Mo Ling found himself above a deep pool. The water was crystal clear, with sunlight streaming through the holes, casting beams of light all around.
Some hardy plants grew by the pool, thriving in the sunlight and moisture.
The diving helmet was already standing on a rock by the pool, shaking water off his electronic screen.
“This should be far enough. They can’t find you now,” he reassured Li Luo, who was still in the pool.
Li Luo swam to shore, pulled a yellow sponge from her bag, and pressed it to her clothes, instantly drying them.
“Give me one,” the diving helmet said, holding out his hand.
After receiving the sponge, he didn’t dry his own clothes but used it to dry his electronic screen, then began recording something on it, looking very serious.
Mo Ling now noticed that the diving helmet was wearing the white coat typical of researchers, though it was now soaked through, which he didn’t seem to mind.
On the electronic screen, he appeared to be meticulously documenting the behavior of the robed figures, his sentences perfectly fluent, with no sign of language disorder.
After finishing, he looked at Li Luo and said calmly, “Judging by when you entered the Black Tower, you should already be affected by the distortion, but you can still understand me. You must have some way to prevent it, right?”
Li Luo nodded.
The diving helmet switched files on the electronic screen and began recording Li Luo’s condition, conversing with her like a doctor.
“To prevent any accidents, I’ll need to run a few tests on you, is that all right?”
With Li Luo’s consent, the diving helmet began asking questions.
“First question, nouns: pick the one that isn’t an animal.”
“A. Sumatran tiger.”
“B. Cat.”
“C. Fan.”
“D. Giraffe.”
A very simple question; Li Luo answered quickly, and the diving helmet nodded and continued, “Second question, verbs: pick the one that isn’t an action.”
“A. Blue.”
“B. Jump.”
“C. Drink.”
“D. Hit.”
……
“Tenth and final question: name a few four-character idioms where each character has a different tone.”
Li Luo thought for a moment and answered, “Flying birds and beasts winding mountain and water, where there’s a will, there’s a way”
The diving helmet nodded and checked a box on the screen.
“You must be new to the Black Tower. The distortion is getting worse, but you found a way to protect yourself so quickly-impressive.”
“My name is Bai Zhou , I’m a medical staff member at the Black Tower Monitoring Station. You can check my nameplate or look me up in the database.”
He took out his nameplate and held it up for Li Luo.
“Level 2 Hunter, Diver Bai Zhou.”
His decisive self-verification dispelled Li Luo’s doubts, but he still seemed unsatisfied.
“Now you can ask me a question to prove I’m not distorted.”
Li Luo was surprised, then shook her head, “Is that really necessary? Your questions already proved it.”
But Bai Zhou insisted, “You must ask, at least one question. That’s the foundation of mutual trust!”
At his insistence, Li Luo remembered Mo Ling’s earlier test and tapped the cube.
Mo Ling immediately understood and sent out the electronic screen.
Bai Zhou glanced at it and answered without hesitation, “D. Obtuse angle.”
“Correct.”
Hearing Li Luo’s confirmation, Bai Zhou visibly relaxed, clearly pleased with himself for getting it right.
He patted his chest and said, “There’s finally a normal human in the Black Tower. I thought everyone was distorted.”
But Li Luo noticed something odd in his phrasing.
“Normal human? Aren’t you one yourself?”
Bai Zhou was taken aback, then waved his hand, “I might not be distorted, but I’m not human.”
“I’m a fishman.”
