I'm A Math Idiot, So What? - Chapter 22
I first looked up who precisely this Professor Fang is on the university’s internal network. Skimming through his achievements, two familiar words caught my particular attention.
Professor Fang’s ancestral home is Taixi!
While the place listed as my ancestral home in my household register is a city I’ve never visited and feel no connection to, there’s a chance that Professor Fang might nurture a nostalgic longing for his own roots, like how Yu Guangzhong did for hometown memories.
Our culture values these hometown connections; since we’re both fellow townspeople, isn’t it reasonable to expect a little favor?
Anyway, desperate times call for desperate measures, so I copied and pasted Professor Fang’s email address and began drafting an 800-word essay.
Firstly, I admitted my lack of preparation when selecting the course and that I missed the earlier opportunity to drop it. Realizing my shortcomings by the third week was entirely my responsibility. I’ll start by metaphorically penalizing myself by downing three cups.
Secondly, I objectively analyzed my awkward position as a senior student and listed the annual recommendations and GPA reviews to prove that I wasn’t usually a hopeless student, subtly implying the need for leniency.
Finally, I started a new paragraph to lyrically talk about the scenery and culture of Taixi, praising the contributions of prominent figures like Professor Fang. I expressed my desire to learn from him, to pursue knowledge, and to contribute to my hometown like he did. Mainly, this was to flatter him, hoping to appeal to his good graces.
I read it over several times and felt it was a bit over-the-top, but flattery never fails, so I sent the email.
After nervously waiting for several days, I received a reply from Professor Fang. Compared to my long-winded email, his response was concise and precise.
“The Beauty of Mathematics is your opportunity to learn from me and pursue truth. Seize it.”
Professor Fang, don’t try to be so cool like the young people!
Professor Fang, that’s not how comprehension works!
Professor Fang, to forgive when possible is virtuous!
Oh my!Memo from Fang Congxin:
For some reason, she is looking for me. I hope her course withdrawal goes smoothly and she doesn’t let down my sincere efforts.
