Chapter 95: Don’t Want to See Her Again
***
By the time I returned to the iron gate of 3 Londor Street mansion, I suddenly realized that when I left, I had climbed out through the window, so I hadn’t brought the keys at all.
When Carlos handed me the keys, I had nowhere to put them, so I just tossed them onto the dressing table. But… well, it’s not really a big problem.
The iron railings surrounding the courtyard, despite being covered with thorny vines with sharp barbs, were less than 3 meters high, so I could easily leap over them. Then I used Moon Step to get onto the roof and returned to the bedroom through the half-open window the same way I came out — during this process, I almost stepped on Goat Cheese who was napping on the windowsill.
“Peipei—idiot—! Fool!”
“Shush! Be quiet, stupid bird.”
I immediately gestured for it to be silent while alertly looking toward a patrol of guards passing by in the distance. Seeing that they hadn’t noticed what was happening here, I breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
Londor Street was heavily guarded, with patrol teams passing by the front door at regular intervals, each team having more than 30 guards. Those who could live here were probably all like that woman, people of noble status and high position. If those guards had discovered me now, being mistaken for a thief might have been the least of my worries.
Even though this was already my home, explaining the situation would certainly be quite troublesome, and I’d probably end up being mocked by Carlos.
Carlos returned not long after.
The moment I heard footsteps in the courtyard, I immediately “whooshed” out from where I had been lying bored on the bed. Since the bedroom carpet was soft and clean, I had taken off my shoes, and now I was too lazy to put them back on, so I went downstairs barefoot and reached the door just as the knocking sound came.
Opening the door, I saw it was indeed him.
“I’m back… why aren’t you wearing shoes?” Carlos entered the house, casually closed the door behind him, and handed me the paper bag he was carrying. “This is for you.”
“Don’t feel like wearing them.” I curiously took it and sniffed, there was a greasy meat aroma. “What is this?”
“Molm Big Sausage, it’s a well-known delicacy in the Royal City. I think it tastes pretty good, try it.”
Sausage, huh… although I’m not particularly fond of it, I guess I’ll give it a try first.
Carrying the paper bag, I ran to sit on the sofa in the living room and spread it out on the square coffee table in front of me. The two sausages inside were still steaming hot, thick and long in shape, with a milky white sticky… sauce drizzled on top?
…These little things sure have a distinctive appearance.
I poked at the sausage with my finger, then glanced sideways at Carlos.
“Quasimodo.”
“Huh?”
“…Did you do this on purpose?”
Carlos, who was taking off his coat and hanging it on the coat rack, turned around with a somewhat puzzled expression upon hearing this.
“Do what on purpose?”
“……”
I didn’t know whether he was pretending to be stupid or not, but I was too embarrassed to ask what I meant, so I just hummed twice and let it go, hesitantly picking up one sausage and taking a small bite.
It tasted pretty good, quite fragrant.
Then I stuck out my tongue and licked the sauce on one end… mm, it definitely tasted like milk.
“This thing is supposedly very popular among the noble ladies in the royal palace. How is it? Do you think it’s delicious?”
Mm… I don’t want to comment.
“Are you eating any?”
Carlos straightened his sleeves and plopped down beside me, settling into a comfortable position and sinking comfortably into the soft sofa.
“I already ate.”
I rolled my eyes at him.
“I already ate too.”
He looked at me with some surprise: “You already ate but still asked me to buy this for you? These two weren’t cheap.”
“But I’m not full.”
“…What did you eat?”
“Akri fruit.”
“Akri fruit? Those are hard to buy. Where did you get it?”
I pouted.
“Next door. From an annoying nutcase.”
“Nutcase?” Carlos frowned, then after a moment seemed to suddenly think of something, his originally half-closed eyes widening. “You went next door? 2 Londor Street?”
“Mm.”
I nodded, thinking he indeed knew that woman.
“That woman, she knows you.”
“…Wait, you met the owner there? The… blonde one?”
“Yes.”
“How did you get in?”
I looked at him somewhat impatiently.
“Jumped in.”
Carlos covered his face.
“What goes on in that little head of yours… you didn’t fight, did you?”
“Almost. Who is she?”
“The one living in the 2 Londor Street mansion, probably you’re the only one in the entire Royal City who doesn’t know who she is… The place we’re living in now, wasn’t it given to us by her?”
…As I thought.
“Is she really the Queen of the Royal City?”
“Yes.”
But she’s too young.
In my imagination, a queen should be a kindly old grandmother with a constant smile on her face, someone gentle yet firm in speech and action. But that Victoria looked like she was only in her early twenties, not much older than me, someone like that is a queen?
And with that aloof, harsh attitude… could someone like that really earn the people’s love… wait.
If she really is the queen, doesn’t that mean I’ll have to face that smug face again tomorrow?
Please no.
“About that.” Just as I was about to ask if I could skip tomorrow, Carlos spoke first. “Just to confirm, you didn’t make her angry, did you?”
That question instantly set me off.
My almond-shaped eyes widened, my small chest heaved constantly, feeling like my lungs were about to explode with anger, and I glared at him indignantly: “Carlos! What do you mean!”
What do you mean did I make her angry?
She nearly made me die of anger! Carlos, you bastard, whose side are you on anyway!
Seeing my fierce expression, Carlos considered for a moment before carefully asking: “I mean, did you do anything… inappropriate?”
I ground my silver teeth with a grinding sound, looking at him word by word.
“What do you mean by in-ap-pro-pri-ate behavior?”
“Just… uh, never mind, let’s change the subject.”
“Don’t change it. This one.”
Now that we’d gotten this far, I wasn’t going to let him off easily.
“Do you think I would curse at her or hit her?”
“…That’s impossible.”
“Then why are you asking me!”
“I’m just worried you might foolishly and accidentally touch her sore spot. She’s…”
Before he could finish, I interrupted him.
“Carlos, you dare call me stupid?!”
“I didn’t mean it like that, I… sigh.” Carlos roughly ran his hands through his hair, his face showing great irritation. “It’s not what you think. That woman… has a terrible personality. Getting on her bad side would be very troublesome for you, and also…”
“And also what?! Is she your mistress!”
At this point I didn’t want to control my emotions at all, saying whatever came to mind. Carlos was startled and quickly covered my mouth.
“Shh—! You silly girl, what nonsense are you spouting!”
“Mmph!” I quickly shook my head and raised my foot to kick at his face. Carlos saw this and hurriedly leaned back, his hand covering my mouth loosening. I immediately scooted back a distance and looked at his somewhat angry face, feeling wronged inside.
That woman bullied me like that, and instead of helping me scold her, you’re here being cross with me…
Of course, I couldn’t let Carlos notice such weak thoughts, so I couldn’t show weakness with my words.
So I continued glaring at him, showing a fierce expression that was strong on the outside but weak on the inside.
“What, did I hit the mark?”
Carlos looked quite helpless.
“…You absolutely cannot let her hear those words.”
“What are you afraid of her for!”
“I’m not afraid.” Carlos’s face, with its hard lines, now looked like he’d swallowed a fly. “It’s because I’ll be leaving soon. It was rare for His Holiness the Pope to get her to agree to take care of you here… if you two start off disliking each other, what’s the point… tsk, women are indeed trouble regardless of age, so being single is the best…”
He said the last part very quietly, but I still heard it.
“Who’s the trouble!”
Carlos immediately snapped to attention and denied it.
“I wasn’t talking about you.”
I ignored him.
I sat properly and continued biting into the sausage in my hand, thinking about what Carlos had just said… somehow, the food in my mouth suddenly lost all flavor.
After a moment of silence, I threw the sausage onto the coffee table.
“This doesn’t taste good.”
“…Weren’t you just eating it with great relish?”
“It just doesn’t taste good.”
“Are you too full?”
“No.”
“Then what should we do?” Carlos shrugged. “The market has been empty for a while now. If you want something else, there’s nowhere to buy it. Finish eating, we can’t waste food.”
Carlos picked up the sausage again and took a bite from the other end.
“…Tastes fine to me?”
I frowned deeply.
“Carlos.”
“Mm?”
“Tomorrow, I don’t want to see her.”
“That would be so rude.”
“I don’t want to go.”
“Go on, it’ll be fine.”
Carlos wanted to pat my head, but realized his hands were greasy from the sausage, and seeing my fierce glare, he gave up.
“Don’t be willful. I can’t just leave you here alone without any care. Queen Elizabeth is the most suitable person. Although her personality is somewhat troublesome… I trust her work ethic. You need to get along well with her.”
“…Why is she the most suitable person?”
“She’s the queen, and also a Pontifical Knight. With such status, isn’t she the most suitable? In the future in the Royal City, even if you walked sideways like a crab, no one would dare interfere.”
As Carlos spoke, he held up both hands like scissors on either side of his head, actually mimicking a crab, but since he was still holding the sausage, his ridiculous appearance made me burst out laughing with a “pfft,” then immediately realized something was wrong.
Wasn’t this just coaxing a disobedient little girl? I wouldn’t fall for his tricks.
I immediately put on a stern face again.
“I’m not going anyway.”
“Really not going?”
Carlos narrowed his eyes.
“…Not going.”
“Really really not going?”
He put down the sausage and looked at me with a smile that gave me goosebumps, making my voice unconsciously tremble.
“Just… just not going.”
“If you’re not going, then don’t go.”
