Chapter 90: Romance, or Just Cheesy?
***
The horned carriage slowly rolled over the flower-white marble city road, wheels rumbling, as the gray-white horned beast snorted through its nostrils, letting out a long neighing sound.
Sitting in front driving the carriage wasn’t a coachman, but a guard dressed in silver armor. He was humming some unknown tune, holding the reins with one hand. Under the golden sunlight, the elegantly lined shadow of the carriage bounced along as it headed straight toward the barrier.
I started getting nervous.
We’re not just going to crash right into it, are we…
Will I get dizzy and nauseous…
…Wait! Carlos said this barrier can resist any evil invasion, so… it won’t just block me out, will it…
Please don’t.
Seeing the barrier getting closer and closer, I fearfully closed my eyes, pressed my lips together, and unconsciously hummed “Mmm—” through my small nose, tensing my body as I waited for the impact.
A moment later, I suddenly heard a “pop” sound by my ear, like a stone breaking through the water’s surface. When I came to my senses and opened my dark eyes again, the barrier was already far behind us.
I quickly turned around to look back, only to see the ripples spreading across the transparent membrane hadn’t completely faded yet.
…That’s it? I didn’t feel anything at all.
Somewhat puzzled, I turned back around, just in time to catch Carlos with a sneaky smile on his face.
My expression immediately darkened.
“…You dare laugh at me?!”
“Ah no, I didn’t.”
Carlos quickly looked away, pretending to cough twice.
“Cough cough, I just remembered something.”
“You were laughing at me!”
I raised my fist to punch his chest, and Carlos startled, hurriedly raising his arms to block. Just then, the guard driving the carriage spoke up.
“Sir, Miss, though I really don’t want to disturb you two, I still have to say we’ve reached the city gates. Please cooperate with the entry inspection.”
“Oh, alright, I’ll handle it.” Carlos took the opportunity to jump down from the carriage, leaving the compartment. “Little Syl, just stay seated there.”
I huffed and pouted angrily, but couldn’t make a scene anymore. I could only glare at his back as he walked toward the guards, thinking viciously: This is the 166th time.
“Carlos Gonzalez… Peylo Guinevere Wintermoon… Mm-hmm, that’s right, Valen Empire…”
“Holy Church… Royal Academy… 3 Londor Street…”
The entry registration finished quickly. After the guards verified everything was correct, they let us through.
Carlos returned to the carriage, the guard driver gripped the reins again, and the horned carriage slowly passed through the stone gate. After traveling through a deep tunnel, the view suddenly opened up.
I don’t know if this counts as a royal city specialty, but this horned carriage’s canopy was wrapped in expensive, exquisite silk. The luxurious body was inlaid with gold and silver, with all four sides covered by light blue gauze curtains. This design obviously wasn’t for better long-distance travel, it was more like a sightseeing tour vehicle that allowed passengers sitting inside to take in all the surrounding prosperity.
On both sides of the stone road, wide enough for 5 or 6 carriages to travel side by side, highly artistic buildings were neatly planned and densely packed, towering on both sides. Wooden signs of various shapes hung from doorframes, with everything from inns and taverns to jewelry shops and herb stores.
After entering this blue-white magical city, the noise of human voices grew louder.
The pedestrians on the street had hair of all different colors. Whether wearing cloth clothes or wrapped in armor, their attire was generally clean and refined. They used their own appearance to silently tell of this city’s prosperity.
From the complicated entry procedures alone, you could tell the royal city would forever keep poverty outside its gates.
In a corner of the street, a bard was singing a hymn of praise.
“Oh~ great deity.
I crossed that mountain in my heart, passed through that grassland.
I traveled a thousand miles, just to find my own home.
Kanri, that quiet and beautiful homeland.
That homeland of the chosen people—”
As the horned carriage went deeper into the alleys, that singing voice was gradually left behind and disappeared.
“Sir, Miss. Welcome both of you to the world’s greatest miraculous city, Order City!” The guard driver spread his arms wide, turning back to look at us. His speaking tone was rounded, and for some reason I detected a rich French flavor. “Where would you like me to take you?”
“3 Londor Street, please.”
“It’s my honor~ Hold on tight, my respected sir knight, and lovely young lady.”
“Hya—”
The horned carriage accelerated through the bustling street scene. One after another, inns and shops of different styles flew past before our eyes. You could tell the tourism industry here was quite developed, most of them probably weren’t locals…
I curiously gazed at the pedestrians on both sides of the road. Their clothing had a kind of court retro style feel. Though the colors were very bright, they didn’t make people feel out of place. This made my eyes light up, having grown accustomed to black, white, and gray combinations in Winter City.
“Little Syl, don’t stare at other people. That’s very impolite behavior in the royal city.”
“…Oh.”
I withdrew my gaze somewhat regretfully.
I was hoping to use them as a reference to buy some clothes when I have time… This style is so beautiful, it would definitely look great on me.
“Haha, it’s fine, sir. Isenbell is a romantic country, and our royal city’s people are all warm and hospitable. Being gazed upon by such a beautiful young lady, I believe the gentlemen would all feel honored~ Sir, excuse my nosiness, but you and your family’s young lady are from the Valen Empire, correct?”
You and your family’s young lady…
I couldn’t help rolling my eyes.
Due to the climate, Carlos and I had long since taken off our stuffy Pontifical Knight cloaks. Though we were both wearing relatively simple clothing now, people with good eyes could still tell the luxury of the fabric. This guard seemed to have taken Carlos for my knight or butler.
“Yes, that’s right.” Carlos naturally couldn’t be bothered to explain to him.
“Are you here to escort your family’s young lady for enrollment?”
“Correct.”
“Then you’d better hurry up. The royal city’s enrollment procedures officially begin the day after tomorrow… It’s not so easy to get in, you need to prepare accordingly in advance~”
“Thanks for the reminder.”
Carlos was completely unconcerned. I remembered hearing him say before that my enrollment was predetermined.
“No need to be polite, my sir. Just looking at where you’re going, I can tell your family’s young lady is extraordinary… Londor Street is the closest street to the royal palace, and everyone living there has a noble status.”
“Ah, my family’s young lady is from the Valen Empire royal bloodline.”
With some kind of mischievous mentality, Carlos actually went along with his words to show off.
“Haha, I guessed it when I saw the young lady’s beautiful black hair, and that voice as clear as holy springs, like April wind that healed my heart. Being able to drive for you is truly my honor~”
I had absolutely no idea how to respond to his words, looking at Carlos with frustration.
Are the people here a bit too cheesy…
I suddenly remembered that gentleman I met in the Valen Empire who kept saying “this humble one” — he seemed to be from the royal city too… Cataloma’s guard or something.
Speaking of Cataloma, Elle and Lucas should have already arrived here first, right?
I wonder how they’re doing over here.
Thinking of this, I asked the guard: “Excuse me, where is Cataloma?”
“Oh, beautiful young lady, do you mean the Cataloma Orphanage?”
“Yes.”
“It’s in the north part of the royal city near the church district, quite far away. Usually almost no one goes over there. Miss, are you asking about this because you want to… do something for those unfortunate children?”
“Mm… to visit someone.”
“Just arriving in the royal city and already asking about where those poor children are… Miss, I’ve never seen a noble like you. Please accept my heartfelt respect for you.”
The guard’s tone became somewhat moved. He took off his helmet and turned around, giving me a solemn bow. His attitude was no longer the slick talk from before.
