Chapter 80: Captain Grey
***
Parsifal immediately put on a sad face: “Uncle Pagos, I really can’t lift it!”
“Then starting tomorrow, your blacksmithing quota will be doubled, until you can lift 100 kilograms of stuff before we talk again.”
He pushed away the dispirited Parsifal with one hand, then reached out his right hand to grip the handle of the giant scythe. His arm muscles, as bulky as a bear, suddenly bulged as he pulled it out with one hand.
His expression remained relaxed, looking completely at ease.
“Step back a bit.”
The Duke and I stepped back several paces. We saw Pagos tightly gripping the end of the handle, the muscles on his arm bulging again as he suddenly swung the weapon downward.
Clang!
The folded handle snapped together with the sound, and the blade that had been tight against the handle stood upright. In an instant, a 2-meter long giant scythe had taken shape.
The entire scythe was pitch black, without any particularly fancy decorations or designs. The 0.5-meter long blade gleamed coldly in the firelight. Pagos turned the scythe body around and lightly tapped the handle on the ground.
Thud.
A muffled sound rang out.
“Come, Peipei, try it.”
“Okay.”
I stepped forward and took the giant scythe from Pagos’ hands. The moment he let go, the heavy weight transferred over, catching me off guard and making me immediately crouch lower.
Although I had mentally prepared myself enough, as someone used to light weapons, I still underestimated its weight.
“Be careful,” the Duke couldn’t help but warn, “Can you handle it?”
I took a deep breath, released my left hand from the handle, and suddenly exerted force with my right hand, lifting it up in one go.
“My god!” Parsifal exclaimed in surprise, “When this thing came out, I thought you were all joking… Peipei, when did you become such a monster—”
I shot him a sharp look.
Slap!
Parsifal immediately slapped his own mouth.
“I didn’t say anything!”
…That’s better.
I brought the giant scythe across and balanced it on my palm, feeling it out. Not bad, but this weight… it would definitely take some time to get used to.
Then I carefully examined the scythe body.
On the pure black handle, countless tiny sunflower patterns bloomed quietly. The straight handle began curving into a crescent shape at 20 centimeters from the end, and at the bottom of the crescent’s concave part, there were two trigger-like mechanisms.
“Try pulling one,” Pagos said from the side. “Don’t point the blade at yourself.”
I nodded and used my pinky to pull one of the triggers.
Click click click——
I heard the light sound of gears turning, and the giant scythe in my hands trembled slightly. The next moment, the blade that had been at a 90-degree angle to the handle suddenly stood up with a “zing” sound, becoming parallel with the handle. The giant scythe instantly transformed into a long spear.
“Wow!”
I was startled, then couldn’t help but let out an exclamation of amazement.
“If you pull that same trigger again, it will turn back into a scythe.”
So I hooked my pinky on the trigger again.
Click click click—
The blade turned, the handle trembled again, and the weapon indeed returned to its scythe form.
“This weapon can transform into three forms based on the user’s needs. The scythe is one form, the long spear is another, and there’s still one more… try pulling the other trigger.”
There’s actually a third form… let’s pull it and see.
Click click click—
The handle instantly split into numerous finger-length sections, and thin chains extended from inside. Then with a loud “bang”, the blade dropped to the ground, and the weapon in my hands had suddenly changed into a chain scythe.
“After becoming a chain scythe, the length from the handle end plus the chain can reach 5 meters. In spear form, the attack range extends another half meter… how is it, does it meet your requirements?”
I nodded repeatedly while pulling the trigger in my hand once more.
The handle immediately began to retract, the chain making “rattle rattle” sounds as it rubbed against the handle body. In just a moment, it had all been pulled back into the handle, and the weapon returned to its giant scythe form.
“This is amazing! Really, amazing.”
This was simply a delightful surprise.
Actually, my original intention was just to have a good, not-easily-broken scythe, but now this in my hands… the Central Workshop’s technology was too powerful. This exquisite craftsmanship could absolutely be called a work of art, though it was a bit complex — to use it well would definitely require more practice.
“Thank you!”
I excitedly hugged the weapon, somewhat reluctant to let it go. Something like this was truly captivating.
“I’m glad you like it.” Seeing how happy I was, the Duke also smiled, “Well then, the Central Workshop’s 13th Moon Blade is officially born. As per tradition, the user needs to name it.”
…It needs to be named?
Why wasn’t this mentioned earlier?
If told earlier, I could have thought about it in advance, come up with a more imposing name, like Kill Carlos or Smash Carlos or something…
“Can I… name it after I go back?”
“That works too, but you’ll need to bring it back then, I need to engrave the weapon’s name on the handle,” Pagos said.
So troublesome, having to come back again… who’d want to come back to a place like this.
What should I name it?
Looking at the huge scythe handle in my hand, for some reason I thought of the captain without a ship from the story.
“Captain Grey.”
I’ll just call it this.
Parsifal’s face darkened: “Peipei, are you sure you want to call it this name? Such an imposing weapon… though I suppose this is indeed your naming style…”
I frowned.
“This is what I’m calling it.”
“Eh, why don’t you reconsider… look, why not call it Abyss Ender, or Blood Drinker, wouldn’t that be more impressive!”
“Hahaha——, if Peipei likes it that’s what matters, why are you butting in?” The Duke smacked his head, “Let her call it whatever she wants, I think Captain Grey is quite nice.”
Hearing this, I gave him a smug look.
The Duke really has good taste.
The engraving didn’t take much time. Pagos took the giant scythe to the smelting room and came back shortly after. I folded the weapon back up and put it in the leather case.
The left side of the case had adjustable straps. I put the case on my back and found the length was just right, although it completely covered my petite body, my head and ankles were perfectly visible.
After jumping a couple times and feeling no discomfort, I left the Central Workshop together with the Duke.
…………
Life seemed to return to normal.
Every morning I still had to spar with the Duke for a while, mainly to practice with the weapon in my hands. Using it well was no easy task, because it meant I needed to skillfully wield — even master — three completely different weapons: the scythe, long spear, and chain scythe, and then be able to smoothly switch between them.
This was a very difficult thing, all I could do was work hard at it.
I had pretty much finished learning Madam’s etiquette lessons, and she no longer forced me to do these things. However, I started learning to make desserts with her, because I would be leaving soon, and after leaving it meant I wouldn’t be able to eat Captain Grey anymore, so at least, before leaving I needed to learn how to make this.
In my previous life, I was almost completely ignorant about cooking… or rather, I didn’t put my energy into it. Busy with work every day, there was simply no time to experience life. Nearly all three meals were eaten outside, and although I never shortchanged myself when it came to food, there was always something missing in the taste.
Back then I didn’t know what was missing, but now, I’ve experienced this point through the Madam.
What was missing was the human touch.
So here, I learned very quickly, and doing it made me happy from the bottom of my heart. Soon I could make many desserts by myself without the Madam’s supervision.
