Chapter 8: Farewell!
***
“Then… would you come with me, back home, to get it?”
I tilted my head, tears glistening in my eyes as I blinked twice, my face wearing an expression of unworldly innocence.
Brother Abel and his brother immediately covered their noses.
“No, well, you see, we just met not long ago, so going to your home wouldn’t be quite appropriate… How about this, you go home first to get the money, we’ll follow behind you, and then wait near your house. You can come find us after you get the money, how’s that?”
Brother Abel’s small eyes visible above the black cloth twinkled with a coy smile.
I almost laughed again at his adorable thinking. This must be the type of person they talk about, those who neither want to be good people nor can be proper villains.
However, I discovered that my seemingly pitiful face seemed to have a magical effect when it came to gaining people’s trust.
So I tried hard to maintain my facial expression, attempting to appear even more harmless.
“Um… okay. How much money, do you want? I’m afraid, my allowance isn’t enough.”
“How much allowance do you have?”
“About, several hundred gold coins, maybe?”
The robber brothers were stunned speechless upon hearing this.
Several hundred gold coins!
She said gold coins! Not silver coins, nor copper coins!
Those were gold coins! How long could several hundred gold coins support their lives? At least five years of luxurious living with fine food and clothing.
God bless, she really was a little rich lady!
At this moment, the way the two looked at me was like the most devoted believers looking at their deity.
“That’s enough, that’s enough. I’m just borrowing this money, I’ll definitely pay you back.”
Brother Abel quickly said, looking as if he was afraid I might change my mind.
He was trying his best to hide his emotions, but inside he was already blooming with joy.
This girl looked so stupid and easy to trick, she must be some inexperienced little lady from a noble family. Such children usually grow up pampered, receive good education, and mostly interact with reasonable people. They probably know nothing about the treachery of human nature. Perhaps she had even sneaked out alone tonight to play at the adventure games that nobles love so much.
What incredible luck to catch such a foolish one. And… this girl was blessed with an angelic face… if possible, would there be a chance to deceive her in another way?
If he could get involved with such a wealthy young lady…
At this thought, Brother Abel’s eyes emitted a strange light. The evil desire contained within made me feel uncomfortable, giving me goosebumps all over.
This act felt like it couldn’t go on much longer.
“Then let’s hurry, where is your home?”
“Saint Marie, Cathedral.”
I blinked my eyes again, but the expression on my face had already shed its disguise, becoming calm and ordinary. These two’s skill level was far too low, making it too boring to play with. Next time… I should find someone more capable to play with.
“You said… where?”
Brother Abel widened his eyes, somewhat disbelieving.
“Brother, she said her home is at Saint Marie Cathedral.”
“…Well, beautiful young lady, we’re just trying to make a living here, don’t joke with me. How could the cathedral be your home?”
“But, I’m not lying. I do, live there.”
Looking at the young girl before him who seemed completely serious and not at all like she was lying, Brother Abel swallowed hard as cold sweat began to form on his forehead.
“You… are you from the Holy Church?”
“Hmm——”
Suddenly hearing this question, I actually tilted my head and thought about it seriously.
Am I considered part of the Holy Church?
Hard to say. Although Carlos told me that while Pontifical Knights are appointed by the Pope, it’s merely an honorary title. Pontifical Knights are heroes of humanity, not belonging to any organization or institution, and won’t be governed by anyone, not even Engel himself can command them. However, this was just Carlos’s statement, or rather, the Holy Church’s external rhetoric.
Looking at it from another angle, the Holy Church possesses a vast number of well-equipped church knights and controls the world’s largest bank and countless widely-resourced money exchangers. The greatest military power and economic lifeline in human society are in the church’s hands, and even the rulers of various countries must obey the church’s will. So can a Pontifical Knight, regardless of their personal abilities, truly break free from the church’s control?
Heh.
If they could really break free from control, why would they be called Pontifical Knights?
“I guess… so?”
Hearing this ambiguous answer, Brother Abel felt somewhat anxious. If this little girl really had connections with the church… he decided to probe indirectly first.
“You guess… then, are all your family members in the cathedral?”
“My brother, is there.”
“What’s your brother’s name?”
“Engel.”
Engel? Why does that name sound familiar? Brother Abel began to grow suspicious.
Although he couldn’t remember who it was for the moment, a name that felt familiar to him certainly wouldn’t belong to some unknown nobody.
“He’s very rich. I can, have him give you, lots and lots of money.”
I told him with complete seriousness.
“Your brother, what’s his surname?”
“John. John XI.”
John XI?
Brother Abel was dumbfounded.
John XI!
This little girl said her brother was John XI!?
Isn’t that the Holy Church’s Pope?!
Come to think of it, the Pope did have a name called Engel, no wonder it felt familiar… What joke is this? The Pope? Your brother? Do you take me for an idiot?
“Do you take me for an idiot?!”
Brother Abel roared at me angrily, apparently having forgotten that he was actually in the middle of a robbery. Young people who get fooled are easily blinded by emotions, losing their rationality and disregarding everything.
I gave him a sweet smile.
“Aren’t you, though?”
“Brother Abel, this girl is playing you,” his brother reminded from the side.
“I f**king know that, you don’t need to tell me!” Brother Abel slapped his brother’s head again, “You revealed my name, idiot.”
“…Brother, what should we do now?”
“What do you mean what should we do! I don’t know what to do either! She doesn’t have any money on her, are we really supposed to follow her to the cathedral?!”
“How do you know she doesn’t have money, what if she’s lying to you? Brother, search her! A child of her status must at least have some valuable jewelry on her, right?!”
“…Oh right, why didn’t I think of that.”
Brother Abel’s eyes lit up again as he cracked his knuckles while speaking to me.
“Well, sister. I don’t want to search you either, that wouldn’t be very friendly. Let’s both take a step back, just quietly hand over any valuable things you have on you, okay?”
“Okay, thank you~”
I nodded at his words and pulled out the Pontifical Knight badge hanging around my neck, dangling it back and forth in front of Brother Abel’s eyes.
“This one, is pure gold. Do you want it?”
It did seem to have a high gold content, and Brother Abel immediately narrowed his eyes, leaning his head closer to carefully observe the glinting golden badge.
Then he saw the iris carved on the badge.
As someone who had struggled at the bottom of society for so many years, it would be insulting Brother Abel’s intelligence to say he didn’t understand the significance of the iris. People like him knew best who they could and couldn’t mess with.
Brother Abel recalled how earlier that day, he had stood in the street alley looking up at the newly appointed Pontifical Knight on the balcony. In his memory, that age and build, as well as the voice… seemed quite similar to the young girl before him.
“…Farewell!”
