Chapter 7: Two Little Thieves
***
The night grew deeper.
The pedestrians on the streets gradually became sparse, and the roadside stalls began closing one after another. Although there would be a spectacular song and dance performance in the south of the city later, it seemed that barely one in ten people remained interested.
Despite being the carnival night of the Emerald Capital, there weren’t actually many people who could stay up all night for it. After all, everyone had their own lives, and many people had lots of work to attend to early the next morning.
The bustling atmosphere had begun to dissipate.
And I, feeling satisfied, patted my little belly, preparing to return to the church.
The annoying banquet should be over by now, right?
Before leaving, I seemed to hear someone say that the King of Sylgaria would arrive at the banquet venue later… I snuck away precisely because I hate these troublesome affairs. I couldn’t let a visit to the Emerald Capital go to waste, I just wanted to properly satisfy my foodie desires, so I made an excuse about feeling unwell and wanting to return to rest, leaving Engel to deal with everything else.
Most of the delicacies in the Emerald Capital were primarily vegetable and fruit-based, with meat usually serving as side dishes or condiments. After several hours of exploring, I had eaten my way through almost all the busiest market streets before finally feeling a hint of fullness. Looking down at my flat belly, I actually felt quite puzzled, not knowing how this little body managed to contain so much food.
…Well, monsters are bound to be different from humans in some ways.
Never mind, as long as I enjoyed myself.
The two moons in the night sky cast their pure white glow, their hazy luminescence flowing and drifting among the city’s neon lights. Carrying bags of fruits and snacks, I hummed a light tune, wandering alone through the streets and alleys. Breathing in the clean, natural air of this other world, my state of mind felt peaceful and serene at this moment.
The only imperfection was the sanitary pad wrapped tightly around my bottom. Although it was carefully sewn by Grandma Claire, thoughtfully stuffed with soft and absorbent cotton, the roughness of the fabric made me feel uncomfortably bulky between my legs, creating a… peculiar sensation with every step.
It hurt a little, and felt somewhat warm.
But at least there wouldn’t be any more situations of blood spattering everywhere. During the day… hm? Did anything happen during the day? No, I don’t think so, anyway I’ve forgotten about it.
Let’s just pretend it never happened.
While my mind wandered with various random thoughts, by the time I came to my senses, the dark alley was completely empty. And in front of my line of sight, a figure whose face I couldn’t make out blocked my path.
“Stop, don’t move.”
The shadow spoke up, the voice sounding rather young, seemingly belonging to a boy who wasn’t very old.
I frowned at his words.
Actually, I had noticed them long ago.
Earlier when the crowds were dense, I might have been too focused on eating to notice. But after the streets became less crowded, with my perceptive abilities, how could I not notice someone watching me? Originally, I didn’t want these ill-intentioned thieves to spoil my mood, so I just ignored them, but I didn’t expect them to be so patient that they would follow me all the way here.
This small alley was a shortcut to the church, narrow and long, densely shadowed by the buildings on both sides. I hadn’t given it much thought when walking through, only now realizing it was a perfect spot for robbery. They probably hadn’t expected that a girl like me would dare to walk through such a place late at night, and were likely rejoicing at their luck right now.
What, do they think I look easy to bully?
It seems that no matter where you go, there will always be such urban trash, what do they want to do?
Rob me?
Or worse?!
Since you’ve encountered me, that’s just your bad luck.
I slightly curled my lips, suddenly feeling playful.
First, building up the emotion, after seeing the boy slowly walking towards me, I suddenly took two trembling steps backward, timidly asking.
“Who… who are you?”
My voice was like that of an oriole mixed with trembles, completely presenting the image of a weak and vulnerable startled young girl.
“Little sister, you look like you’re quite wealthy.”
“I… I don’t have any money…”
After saying this, I made as if to run away, but suddenly froze just as I was about to turn around.
“My brother said not to move, so you better listen to him.”
A deliberately lowered voice sounded from behind, another even younger boy, pressing the dagger in his hand against my lower back, silently cutting off any escape route.
“What… what do you want to do?”
“Haha, little sister, don’t be afraid. We’re not bad people, we’re just a bit short on cash recently and want to borrow some silver coins from you. We’ll pay you back after a while.”
The older boy spoke up.
“Brother! Come quick and look, this girl is wearing clothes made of silk!”
A sudden excited shout came from behind, forgetting to disguise the voice, the duck-like voice of puberty immediately revealed his age.
Looks like they’re just a couple of kids.
“Shh— Keep your voice down, do you want to die?!”
The older boy was startled, taking two quick steps to my front, and gave a heavy slap to the head of the boy behind me.
“There are still plenty of people outside the alley, aren’t you afraid they’ll hear?!”
Both of their faces were covered with thick black cloth, concealing their features thoroughly, looking like professionals — this certainly wasn’t their first time doing this.
“Oh. Brother, look look, this girl must be really loaded, why don’t we just kidnap her?”
Slap——
The younger boy got hit again.
“Has your brain gone mushy? Borrowing some silver coins is one thing, but you dare to kidnap someone like her! What if they send the army after us?”
“No, please, don’t kill me…”
I acted as if I was about to cry.
“We didn’t say we’d kill you, don’t be afraid. Just hand over the silver coins obediently, and we won’t do anything to you.”
The older boy started to comfort me.
“But, really, I don’t have any money…”
To prove to them that I really had no money, I turned out my dress pockets, and a few copper coins fell out, clattering onto the ground.
Then I gave them an innocent look.
Today I only exchanged half of those inferior silver coins that Grandma Claire gave me for about a dozen Emerald silver coins from the money exchanger, and I hadn’t touched the 1 million that Engel gave me. I thought it would be enough for me to spend for a while, but I ate too much in the evening, and the prices in the Emerald Capital were somewhat different from what I had imagined, so now I only had these few copper coins left. The Pontifical Knight’s allowance isn’t distributed until the 15th of each month, so my pockets are now cleaner than my face.
Seeing this situation, the two boys were dumbfounded.
“Impossible, I clearly saw you had lots of silver coins in your pocket earlier.”
“…Spent them all.”
“That many silver coins, you spent them all in one night?!” The older boy seemed very angry, snatching the fox mask from my face, “You wasteful woman, I…”
His words stopped halfway as he suddenly froze.
His two eyes stared fixedly at my tear-stained fair face, mumbling somewhat absent-mindedly.
“My god… by the gods above, have I encountered an angel sent by You…”
“Brother! Brother Abel! What’s wrong with you?”
The boy behind saw his big brother suddenly lost his soul and anxiously called out.
“…”
“Brother Abel!”
“…Nothing, nothing.” Hearing his brother’s voice, Brother Abel quickly regained his senses, but when he looked at me again his gaze was flickering, “You… you really have no money?”
“No… please don’t kill me, don’t kill me!”
After saying this, I forced out two tears, showing a face about to burst into tears.
The effect was even greater than I had imagined, as Brother Abel’s Adam’s apple kept bobbing up and down, his face actually showing signs of struggle, seemingly engaged in an unusually intense internal battle.
“Then… then what should we do, we wanted to bor-borrow money from you… look, could you maybe help us out?”
Brother Abel’s voice became stuttering, actually taking on a tone of negotiation with me.
“Brother Abel, what’s wrong with you?! You’re suddenly acting weird, she says she has no money and you just believe her, did this girl cast a spell on you!”
“Shut up!”
“No, you’re really acting strange!”
“None of your business.”
“How did you… holy crap, what a beautiful sister…”
The younger boy, upon seeing my face, fell into a momentary trance just like Brother Abel.
My mouth twitched, almost bursting into laughter.
How interesting, how fun——
Hahaha, this is bad.
As manly as I am, it seems some strange attribute is about to awaken.
