Chapter 5: That Familiar Warm and Wet Feeling
***
August 1, 1186.
On this day, the sky was crystal clear without a single cloud.
The Emerald Capital seemed more bustling and noisy than ever before.
At the Saint Marie Cathedral, located in the heart of the city, the massive Praise Square in front of its gates was packed with people. Looking around, whether dressed in plain clothes or appearing luxuriously attired, everyone was now crowded shoulder to shoulder, completely filling the entire square. The continuous stream of people extended into the streets and alleys connected to the square, all craning their necks toward the majestic building in the distance, waiting for that moment to arrive.
“Has the ceremony begun?” someone in the crowd asked.
“Can’t see, it’s too crowded!”
“What’s the rush? When the bells ring, we’ll get to meet the new hero.”
Indeed, the people of Narangard knew that soon a new Pontifical Knight would be born here. The Pope had arrived in the Emerald Capital several days ago to prepare for the upcoming hero’s investiture ceremony.
Such sacred moments were rare, not only could they see the usually unreachable hero, but they could also take this opportunity to glimpse the Pope’s countenance. With luck, they might even feel the divine breath from the Pope, which would be an incredibly glorious thing that could potentially bring blessings to future generations.
“I heard this time’s hero, all alone, actually beat a monster from the Abyss to death.”
“Let me correct you, it wasn’t just one but a group. Recently in the Woodward Forest in the Western Lands, there was a small village nearby that’s now completely in ruins.”
“How do you know that?”
“I make a habit of reading the weekly reports. This was published in the church gazette a few days ago, saying if it weren’t for the hero’s timely intervention, the Valen disaster from two years ago might have happened again.”
“My goodness, how terrifying. No wonder they’re holding the investiture ceremony so quickly. That’s a true hero who saved all of Sylgaria…”
“Thank the Holy Church for their grace, may God bless us…”
Soon after, sacred hymns began to emanate from the cathedral.
In the magnificent cathedral hall, surrounded by countless monks and nuns singing hymns, a young girl in white robes walked toward the platform.
Then secretly pouted.
Being disturbed from sweet dreams early in the morning by Carlos, forced to listen to a bunch of nonsense, then made to wear these complicated and ugly robes. That wasn’t all, they even made me put on makeup, with white foundation covering my face and rouge on my lips. After looking in the mirror, I thought I looked absolutely festive. I’ve been angry ever since then, and I’m still pouting with displeasure written all over my face.
I originally thought the ceremony would just be a simple formality, but hearing the thunderous crowds outside the cathedral now made me realize I had underestimated the significance of being a Pontifical Knight.
I really didn’t expect it to be this troublesome.
Reluctantly approaching the platform, I lifted my head to look at Engel ahead.
The man stood tall with a jade-like complexion. Wearing elaborate pure white ceremonial robes and an ornate crown, his every movement exuded overwhelming dignity, a stark contrast to his slovenly appearance from yesterday, I could hardly believe it was the same person.
Well, at least he finally looks like a proper Pope.
Thinking this, I secretly stuck my tongue out at him, making an angry face.
This action came naturally, and only after doing it did I realize, why would I do such a childish, silly thing like a little girl?
My face immediately turned slightly red.
Engel pretended not to see it, ceremoniously placed one hand lightly on my head, and began speaking slowly with a solemn expression.
“Sylvia… ahem, my lady, God’s chosen one.”
My eyebrows raised at his words.
This guy… he didn’t remember my surname, right? Shouldn’t he be calling me Lady Labishmers at this time? Can’t he be more reliable?
I immediately gave him a contemptuous look.
Engel obviously couldn’t respond at this moment, and continued speaking with an unchanged expression.
“I, Engel Joseph Adrian John XI, following God’s will, hereby bestow upon you the title of Pontifical Knight of the Holy Church at this sacred place.”
At this point, two nuns came forward to remove my long robe, carefully taking the white cloak from Engel’s hands and draping it over me.
The style was identical to Carlos, this was standard issue for Pontifical Knights.
After putting on the cloak, the nuns withdrew. Engel personally pinned an exquisitely crafted golden badge on me, engraved with a blooming flower matching the pale golden flower on the back of the cloak.
I lowered my head to stare at the shining badge on my chest, somewhat lost in thought. Carlos had told me this flower was called an iris, symbolizing justice and courage, and was also the name of the first Pontifical Knight. The meaning of this flower was the meaning of the Pontifical Knights’ existence, and only Pontifical Knights had the right to wear badges engraved with the iris.
“…Little Charcoal, now, turn around and smile.”
The sudden whisper startled me awake. I looked up at Engel, he was still smiling and looking straight ahead, but his slightly trembling jaw muscles gave away his gritting teeth.
I immediately jolted to attention, turned to face the church personnel, and forced an awkward yet polite smile.
Clap clap clap——
The applause was thunderous and continuous.
“Dong——” “Dong——” “Dong——”
The deep, far-reaching bell sounds echoed through the clouds. Hearing this sound that had given me psychological trauma, my small hand unconsciously trembled.
Then, as if responding to some kind of call, a familiar warm and wet feeling suddenly appeared between my legs.
In an instant, the smile froze on my face.
“May God bless you,” Engel said with grave dignity.
“May God bless you.”
I looked up at the ceiling, where lifelike stone carvings depicted various scenes. The little figures in those carvings were all staring at me now, and I could almost see the corners of their mouths curling into faint, MMP-like smiles.
May God bless you, hehe.
My period, at this sacred and solemn moment, with perfect ceremonial timing and giving full face, had arrived.
…Aren’t girls supposed to have warning signs before their period starts, like feeling irritable or uncomfortable?
Why! Did I! Have absolutely! No warning!
It hasn’t even been a month yet! I thought it would be in a couple of days… I really thought it would be in a couple of days, why… Could it be that the reason I woke up angry this morning was because of this!?
I wanted to slip away, but the ceremony was far from over. Next, Engel had to lead me up to the third floor, through a long corridor, and then to the balcony at the end to address the thousands of faithful waiting outside.
This was probably the most painful journey I had ever walked in my life. The whole way, I desperately kept my legs together, waddling like a clumsy duckling with X-shaped legs taking tiny steps, terrified that if I took even slightly bigger steps, embarrassing liquid would flow down my legs. Fortunately, compared to the last time when I had nothing to cover myself, at least I was wearing underwear this time. At this critical moment, it could help me struggle on for a while longer, though I didn’t know how long it would last because my flow was very heavy.
Come on, panties, I believe you can help me get through this crisis.
Walking beside me, Engel wore a face full of fake smiles, and because of the wide cloak covering my figure, he hadn’t noticed anything unusual about me.
Of course, I wouldn’t let him find out either. I felt that if he knew about this, it wouldn’t just be a matter of embarrassment, this guy would definitely do something unexpected.
After all, this person’s thinking couldn’t be measured by normal human standards.
The whole journey wasn’t actually very long, but it felt like I had walked for a century, and the slippery feeling between my legs was getting stronger.
Finally, as we approached the balcony, I quickly pulled the hood over my head.
If I ended up embarrassing myself at the crucial moment… well, that would be the new Pontifical Knight’s shame, what would it have to do with Sylvia?
“Why are you covering your face?” Engel whispered, reaching out to pull down my hood.
“None of your business!” I lowered my voice to prevent the monks following behind from hearing, while my right hand firmly held onto the hood. After trying to pull it down twice without success, Engel couldn’t openly argue with me due to the public image, and had no choice but to quietly mutter “little ostrich” before giving up.
“Look, look, they’re coming out!”
“Oh— Your Holiness! Sir Pontifical Knight!”
“May God bless you!”
The crowd erupted the moment we appeared. Engel raised both hands and lowered them, gesturing for silence.
“It is our great honor that God has brought us new hope. On this day, we have given birth to a 16-year-old Pontifical Knight!”
“16 years old! My goodness!”
“He’s still a child!”
The crowd instantly exploded into chaos, forcing Engel to gesture for silence again to continue his speech.
“This is God’s grace bestowed upon us, a moment worthy of being recorded in history! As God’s children, we should all feel honored…”
I had no attention to spare for whatever he said after that. My underwear was getting wetter and wetter, and I really felt like I couldn’t hold on much longer. Sweat was running down my forehead from anxiety, and all I could think about was ending this quickly.
It’s okay, no one will find out. I comforted myself.
I had slept in a room on the third floor of the cathedral last night, not far from the balcony. There were sanitary pads that Grandma had sewn for me in my bundle in the room. Once this was over, I could rush back to the room immediately, I would definitely make it in time.
“…Now, let our young Pontifical Knight, Miss Sylvia, address everyone.”
No, I absolutely can’t run, just need to walk slowly, feeling like if I bounce at all that stuff will flow out! And if I walk too hastily Engel might notice something… Huh? Why did Engel stop talking, is it over?
I raised my head in confusion.
“It’s. Your. Turn. To. Speak. Little fool—”
The gritting teeth voice sounded again. Before I could react, a sudden strong force came from my waist as Engel pushed me forward in my daze, causing me to stumble forward two large steps.
Ahhhh— it’s coming out, it’s coming out— Damn you Engel!
I immediately clenched my legs together and didn’t dare move. At this moment, I even had thoughts of killing him.
Wasn’t it supposed to be over? Why do I still have to give a speech? My mind was completely blank, I couldn’t concentrate, what should I say?
“Ah…”
In my anxiety, I uttered a syllable.
Ah?
Engel’s face showed confusion.
“Ah—”
The faithful below looked up at me with faces full of anticipation.
“Achoo——”
After a big sneeze, I sniffled.
“…”
The entire scene suddenly seemed to have been muted, terrifyingly silent.
…Oh no, I got nervous and sneezed, and I felt something flow down there.
