Chapter 33: Alley Battle

***

Someone is attacking me!

With a quick dodge, I hid behind a stone sculpture, curling my body slightly and crouching down vigilantly, perking up my ears to listen carefully to the surroundings.

Besides the sound of wind and snow, I couldn’t hear any unusual noises.

The attacker’s ability to conceal themselves was remarkably skilled. The arrow from earlier seemed to appear out of nowhere, and it was clearly aimed at my head… Were they trying to kill me?

Why?

I had only been in Winter City for one day, had I offended anyone?

…No, the target was Peylo.

She was accidentally killed three years ago, and now I suddenly returned with this body. Perhaps some people were worried that their secrets would be exposed… At least that person called Edward, if he knew about my return, he should be feeling anxious, right?

Who exactly was he?

Thoughts raced through my mind while my eyes continuously scanned the shadows cast by buildings around the square, trying to locate the enemy’s whereabouts.

The densely packed houses appeared particularly quiet in the night, with alleys of varying widths between them. Dim street lamps hung along the alleyways, and beyond them was pitch darkness where nothing could be seen.

The opponent seemed to have some method of concealment. My usually keen senses suddenly failed, unable to determine how many there were or where they were, so I dared not act rashly.

The atmosphere remained tense for quite a while. Just as I thought the enemy had retreated after their failed attempt and was about to stand up to leave, the whistling sound came again.

My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly lowered my head. The crossbow bolt whooshed past above me, disappearing into the darkness behind.

Still no sight of anyone!

The bolt came from roughly the upper right direction, the enemy must be somewhere around there. Rather than continuing to hide here as a sitting target, I might as well take the initiative and charge over there first!

Having made up my mind, I immediately ran out from behind the sculpture, advancing rapidly in a serpentine pattern. After dodging another crossbow bolt, I rushed into the alley.

The enemy should be nearby.

I pressed my back against the wall, hiding under an eave, closing my eyes to listen carefully.

Ignoring the noisy wind——

“Click.”

A soft sound of a crossbow being loaded came from the roof of a low building not far away.

Hmph, found you.

Bang——

Ice spikes burst from beneath my feet. After bouncing twice on the ground, I leaped directly into the air more than 10 meters high, tracing an ice-blue arc through the sky before landing on the low building.

Then I saw a ghostly figure wearing leather armor.

Where can you hide now!

The figure seemed not to have expected me to discover them. Seeing me jump up so directly, they were stunned for a moment, then hurriedly raised their light crossbow and pulled the trigger at me.

I immediately made a light jump to the side, easily dodging the incoming bolt. At the same time, a blue light flashed in my hand, and five sharp ice spikes flew toward the enemy.

The figure reacted very quickly. The moment they saw the ice spikes appear, they immediately rolled to the side. The ice spikes’ attack missed, hitting the ground with a crisp sound.

The figure quickly got up and actually jumped to the roof opposite, then ran forward without looking back.

Trying to run? Think you can escape?

My feet moved like flying, bending down for a sprint. When still four or five meters from the roof’s edge, I began to jump, while raising my small hand to shoot out several more ice spikes.

Whoosh whoosh whoosh——

The figure seemed to hear the movement behind them and immediately moved sideways to dodge, but due to being too hasty, they finally couldn’t completely avoid it this time. One ice spike pierced their upper arm, making them stumble.

“Hmm!”

The figure groaned, clutching their arm as they struggled to walk to the edge of the roof, then jumped down without hesitation.

Can’t let them escape like this!

After landing steadily, I quickly ran to where the figure had jumped down, poking out my little head to look down.

A fresh breeze hit my face, making me squint my eyes. Then I saw a face wearing a strange mask.

That face was only inches away from me, with an eerie light gleaming from the empty eye holes of the mask, staring straight at me.

My heart suddenly jolted in shock.

The next moment, I saw the figure’s arm swing up.

Clank clank clank——

With a series of explosive sounds of metal friction, a gleaming section whip lashed out at me.

I hurriedly threw my head back, barely dodging the whip’s attack, then quickly retreated two steps.

Cold sweat seeped out on my forehead.

section whip! An exotic weapon!?

What’s going on!?

This low building was at least 7 or 8 meters high, and I was certain there was nothing around the building structure for someone to stand on, but that figure had clearly jumped down, how did they manage to stand there and ambush me?

While my mind was still guessing at their methods, I saw the masked person had already charged back onto the roof, their movements completely different from their previous sluggishness, as light as a bird taking wing.

So they were playing tricks earlier, what a despicable person.

After coming up, the masked person didn’t immediately launch an attack, but watched me vigilantly, continuously swinging the section whip in their hand, seemingly looking for an appropriate moment to attack. The atmosphere became tense.

I looked at the enemy before me who was poised to strike, my expression severe.

This was clearly no ordinary assassin. They were very clever, with extensive combat experience and keen instincts, otherwise they would have been taken down by me in the first encounter.

But so what? No matter how skilled you are, I’ll freeze you first.

I raised my right hand, preparing to release an ice mist, when suddenly a whistling sound came from behind.

What?

Is there a second enemy?

My heart jumped, and not daring to look back, I turned my hand that was originally raised toward the front to point behind me. Ice mist instantly gushed out as I quickly jumped to the side.

There was no movement behind me, the imagined second enemy didn’t appear. At this moment, the masked person suddenly moved.

Their figure was incredibly agile, floating before my eyes in an instant with the thin wind, without leaving any footprints in the snow.

The section whip raised high.

…Think you can succeed like this!

I immediately tried to dodge sideways. Just as my foot took a step, a sudden gust of wild wind arose, making my dress flutter violently.

The high-blown snow splashed on my body and face, causing my eyes to involuntarily close, and my dodging movement paused for an instant.

I was immediately greatly alarmed.

This person could actually use wind to obstruct my movements!

What kind of technique is this!?

The amazement in my heart vanished in a flash as the section whip’s cold light flickered, already falling with a roaring sound.

Clank clank clank——

Boom——

At the critical moment, a huge block of ice rose from beneath my feet, forming a semicircular ice wall that enveloped me. The section whip struck the ice wall, splattering scattered ice fragments, blocking the dangerous strike for me.

Damn!

Two close calls raised a hint of anger in my heart. I frowned, a flash of ice blue crossing my eyes.

The next moment, the ice mist exploded.

This time I almost didn’t hold back at all. The ice mist instantly enveloped a range of more than 10 meters around, and the temperature suddenly became bitterly cold.

Let’s see where you can hide now!

My figure flashed out of the ice wall’s protection. I grabbed an ice spike formed in my hand, and just as I was about to attack, I suddenly discovered that the masked person had actually used the airflow generated by the ice mist’s burst to float lightly out of the attack range.

After flying out several meters, they left the roof, falling toward the road surface.

Trying to run again, or still playing tricks?

This time I was a bit smarter, not rushing over to look down stupidly like before. Instead, blue light flashed beneath my feet, and with a “boom,” I leaped up again.

My petite body rose into the air, and I saw the masked person had already landed steadily on the road surface, giving me their back as they turned to flee.

Looks like they’re really preparing to run.

Why so cowardly, come fight face to face!

I hurriedly adjusted my position in the air, jumping several times to reach the road surface, glancing at the masked person who had just turned into a small alley, and lifted my little legs to chase after them.

Chasing through several streets and alleys.

“Stop running!”

“I’ll beat you to death!”

“Bastard!”

That masked person seemed to have wind under their feet, their steps light and very fast. Seeing the distance growing larger, I was so angry smoke could almost come out of my nose. I kept saying curse words while ice pillars rose beneath my feet once again, launching me into the air. My hand consecutively shot out several ice spikes, but they all missed.

When I landed again, the distance with the masked person had shortened slightly.

Just as I was about to form ice spikes to attack again, that masked person turned into another alley at the side. Seeing this, I gritted my teeth and quickened my pace.

This alley they turned into was narrower, a good opportunity to attack.

As I got closer and closer to the alley entrance, suddenly a fierce wind attacked from behind. I, who was already running at high speed, immediately lost balance and stumbled forward.

The section whip extended from the alley entrance.

Damn bastard, only knows how to play dirty tricks, and is as slippery as an eel.

If I weren’t concerned about the surrounding residents, you think you’d still be alive now?

Dare to sneak attack me!

After building another ice wall to block the attack and quickly steadying my footsteps, my right hand gripped an ice spike and lunged toward the masked person with a charge.

Clank clank clank——

Suddenly, the section whip in the masked person’s hand quickly contracted, becoming a thin blade, and actually neither dodged nor evaded my ice spike, instead chopping straight toward my head.

Want to trade injuries with me? Who do you think you are…

The ice spike turned in my hand, deflecting the thin blade’s attack.

At the same time, my other hand clenched into a fist, punching toward the masked person’s abdomen.

Bang——

The masked person’s body immediately curled up like a shrimp. The tremendous force sent them flying back, tumbling several times on the ground before lying face down, motionless.

“Huff—— Huff——”

After the series of chase, I was slightly out of breath. Wiping the fine sweat beads on my forehead, I raised my foot to walk toward the masked person.

“You’re… a hunter, right? Why… did you attack me?”

The masked person didn’t move.

I frowned.

Passed out? Are they really this weak?

“Hey, you—”

Just as I was speaking, a thunderous explosion suddenly sounded from beneath the masked person.

Bang——

Light gray smoke burst open in an instant, enveloping my figure within it.

“Cough cough——”

A pungent smell entered my nostrils, and my eyes immediately felt a burning sensation. Tears flowed uncontrollably, and my entire face felt burning hot.

What is this!!
