Chapter 3: Don’t Hit My Face!
***
Carlos struggled hard, gripping my arms tightly, his head jerking backward desperately trying to avoid my attack. The Pope was still rolling around on the bed holding his stomach, laughing so hard he could barely breathe. His unrestrained laughter reached my ears, making me feel increasingly angry and embarrassed. No wonder the two priests earlier laughed when they saw me, who knows what kind of horrible drawing Carlos had made of me, it must have been extremely, extremely ugly.
I desperately wanted to smear the ink in my palm on his face, but my hands were firmly restrained by him, and this guy was strong, I couldn’t overpower him. So I simply lifted my right foot and kicked Carlos in the shin.
“Ouch! That hurts, hurts, hurts! Stop it, quick, stop!”
“I’ll kill you!”
I kicked at Carlos again and again, forcing him to keep dodging backward. As a result, my last few kicks missed, making me shake with anger, I wanted to bite him.
“Please don’t, in front of the Pope, give me some face…”
“You jerk!”
…………
The battle finally ended with my victory, Carlos’s face was smeared black all over, looking quite ridiculous.
Even so, I was still indignant, my small chest heaving up and down as I continued glaring at him fiercely.
This guy’s bad taste was completely boring. He had kept emphasizing the importance of this meeting to me, telling me to think carefully about what to say when meeting the Pope, making me quite nervous. But when it came down to it, he deliberately made me look foolish. Now great, all this commotion made me forget everything I had planned to say! I really don’t understand, it’s almost enough to make my lungs explode with anger, but I also know I can’t make too much of a scene in front of the Pope.
A gentleman must have revenge. Just wait, you knight bastard, don’t let me find an opportunity.
“Alright, let’s discuss the serious matters,” Carlos ignored my fierce glare, straightened his disheveled clothes and hair, and spoke as if nothing had happened, reminding the Pope.
“Haha, serious matters.” The blonde man wiped away his tears of laughter, “Well… Little Charcoal, are you that mysterious monster Carlos encountered?”
“I’m not Little Charcoal. And I’m not a monster.”
I stared at him coldly, speaking word by word.
“Oh, that’s not important. Anyway, since you’ve foolishly come here, my goal has been achieved. I regret to inform you that you can’t leave now.”
The Pope before me shrugged his shoulders, carelessly rubbing his cheeks that hurt from laughing, speaking as if making casual remarks.
My heart skipped a beat.
“Engel, don’t cause trouble.”
Carlos’s expression became serious.
The man called Engel narrowed his eyes, a trace of not-yet-faded smile still remaining on his face, but his words made me feel as if I’d fallen into an ice pit in an instant.
“Carlos, what are you hesitating for? Why haven’t you made your move?”
…Made his move?
Are they going to kill me?
I gazed helplessly at Carlos beside me, my beautiful eyes full of disbelief.
Carlos… was he deceiving me? No, that can’t be. He just told me at the church entrance that nothing would happen while he was here. There’s no reason to deceive me, if he wanted to kill me, I wouldn’t have survived until now. There’s no need to wait until we got here to make his move…
Although I comforted myself this way in my heart, telling myself not to be afraid, that everything would be fine, my feet instinctively began to retreat, quietly moving toward the door behind me.
Carlos seemed not to notice my small movements, just calmly staring at the Pope on the bed.
“Engel, now is not the time for such pointless jokes, you’re making things complicated.”
“Are you going back on your word?” Engel’s smile turned cold, a chilling light flashing in his eyes, “Bringing White Night of the Abyss here to submit to my disposal, those were your own words.”
“I said it was a reward.”
“But I said it was disposal.”
“Are you serious? Have you thought through the consequences?”
“What, you want to interfere with my decision?”
“Your decision is extremely foolish.”
“Carlos, no one has ever dared to try to interfere with my decisions. You know my methods, if you want to protect her, have you… thought through the consequences?”
Carlos responded with a cold smile. The two men spoke rapidly, their gazes crossing with sharp intensity, neither showing any sign of compromise. The atmosphere in the room suddenly became tense.
It seemed no one noticed that I had silently retreated to the door… I should take this chance to escape!
I pushed hard against the door behind me, but it didn’t budge at all.
“Little one, you can’t escape. I’ve already had the church knights surround this place. Once you leave this door, please be prepared to face thousands of troops~”
Engel’s gaze remained on Carlos, yet he seemed completely aware of my actions.
“I’m not, afraid of them.”
Though I spoke defiantly, my heart was already filled with anxiety. This Pope before me, who showed no dignity, had probably deceived even Carlos, setting up a trap here long ago, just waiting for him to bring foolish me walking right into it.
“Oh? Would you like to try?”
The blonde man looked at me with interest, showing a somewhat mocking smile.
“Engel! What exactly do you want!”
Carlos shouted angrily, it seemed he was truly angry.
“Please, what do you want? Carlos, I’m wondering, at what point did this little monster bewitch your mind, making you choose to stand against humanity?”
“Engel, if you keep fooling around like this, I’m really going to get angry.”
Carlos took a deep breath, suppressing the fury in his heart. He knew this man well and understood what he wanted to do.
“Fine then, since you’ve made your choice, I’ll just have to kill you too.”
Engel lazily spoke these outlandish words, and when no one took him seriously, he suddenly struck. Golden light emanating from his hand lit up the room, striking directly at Carlos’s head.
Carlos’s eyes widened, his sapphire pupils full of shock, seemingly having not expected Engel to attack him. He stood there somewhat stupidly, frozen in place.
“How dare you!”
The next moment, a petite figure rushed forward.
When Engel struck, I seemed to forget about my plan to escape. I simply didn’t want him to hurt Carlos, my body moving faster than my mind. I rushed forward and kicked Carlos in the buttocks, knocking him aside, ducked under the incoming golden light, and under Engel’s stunned gaze, grabbed his wrist.
Ice surged in my right hand.
“Little Syl, stop quickly!”
“Wait, don’t hit my face!”
Two panicked voices rang in my ears.
I was slightly stunned and instinctively dispersed the ice mist, but it was too late to withdraw my hand.
“Smack!”
My small palm made intimate contact with His Holiness the Pope’s handsome cheek.
This strike, I had used all my strength. Engel, who had no defense, had his entire upper body thrown by this force. His neck immediately made a “crack” of distress as he fell straight back onto the large bed.
The air suddenly went quiet.
“……”
“……”
After a while, Carlos covered his face.
“Idiot… he was lying…”
“What the hell about being surrounded, did they think church knights could fly? How could they possibly be mobilized so quickly…”
“If he had attacked seriously, do you think it would have been so easy to block…”
Uh… was he deceiving me? What a psycho, why would he deceive me… was he testing me?
I secretly glanced at the motionless Pope.
Although I’m reluctant to admit it, this man who had received a solid slap from me was indeed the highest human ruler called the Pope, yet now he lay there like a dead person, without any sign of life.
…He’s not really dead, is he?
Oh no, I’ve made a huge mistake.
Once I realized this, I immediately hid both hands behind my back, acting as if I had nothing to do with it, looking somewhat pitifully at Carlos, my eyes full of helpless confusion.
Carlos waved at me indicating it was fine, then called out to the man lying on the bed.
“Hey, if you keep pretending, I’m going to electrocute you.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Engel’s body trembled, and he scrambled up.
“…Ouch, ouch, it hurts, hurts hurts hurts hurts.” He tilted his head to one side, like someone with a stiff neck, grimacing as he spoke, “Tch— my neck is sprained. Little Charcoal, you hit really hard.”
“…Who told you, to deceive me.”
Seeing he was fine, I felt relieved, then suddenly felt he deserved it.
Hmph, serves you right for playing tricks on me.
“A man who brought this upon himself,” Carlos said irritably from the side.
“I just wanted to tease you! It’s all Carlos’s fault. He told me you were interesting, that’s what sparked my curiosity tch—”
As he spoke, he pulled his neck again and sucked in a sharp breath of pain.
“You’re the, interesting one.”
I rolled my eyes at him. How childish, is it really okay for someone like this to be Pope?
“The ‘interesting’ I mentioned might be different from what you understood… Now that the act is over, can we talk about serious matters?”
Carlos seemed to feel deeply desperate about this Pope as well.
“Alright, alright. Well, Little Charcoal…”
“My name is, Sylvia.” I frowned, interrupting his words.
“Oh, that’s not important.” Engel slowly rotated his neck, his face still showing an unserious expression, “You are White Night of the Abyss, and I am the Pope of the Holy Church, that’s what’s most important. I think you probably can’t understand what this meeting means to me, or to all of humanity, nor do you understand how many obstacles we overcame during this period. But you don’t need to worry, currently less than 10 people in the church know your identity. Later Carlos will tell you who these people are, and also tell you who to be careful of.”
“Will someone, hurt me?”
I asked worriedly.
“Don’t worry, with me here, they won’t dare ouch—”
Engel curled his lips, but before his mocking smile could fully form, he twisted his neck again and let out a cry of pain. His frivolous manner made it impossible to feel any sense of security.
“…Anyway, from today on, you are a Pontifical Knight of the Holy Church, a hero who single-handedly slayed the Abyssal. The investiture ceremony will officially be held tomorrow, but your true identity cannot be revealed for now, and don’t use the Abyssal power carelessly. I have already contacted Queen Elizabeth and prepared to send you to the Royal Academy in the Order City to learn about this world’s knowledge, your Frost Order still has great potential.”
