Chapter 23: Natural Talent?

***

“How is this possible……”

The Duke muttered to himself, his expression showing disbelief, but revealing even more confusion.

I could roughly guess what he was thinking, surely comparing me to Peylo’s standards. He must be wondering now what kind of experiences a physically weak girl had gone through to end up in my current condition.

Unfortunately, I can’t help resolve your confusion, as I’m still quite puzzled and confused about it myself.

“How is it, Your Grace?” Carlos asked.

“Well, I understand the general situation now. Since Miss Sylvia’s Body Refinement Power is so solid, I can also be bold in making attempts, pushing the attack range and destructive power to the limit. However, the scythe is a very special existence even among exotic weapons. Without a certain foundation, it might be less effective than a dagger. Before that……” The Duke tapped his finger on the table, paused for a moment, then said, “Miss Sylvia, I know you’ve killed Abyssal creatures alone, which is very impressive. But have you properly trained in combat techniques?”

Combat techniques? What’s that? I don’t recall anyone ever telling me about this.

Over these past 3 months, my understanding and application of the Frost Order, including the Abyssal Chaos Power, has basically been figured out through my own fumbling, completely driven by feeling or instinct, with no real understanding of what these so-called techniques actually refer to.

For instance, like Carlos’s dazzling god-like speed, would that count as a technique?

How does he actually do that?

Seeing my somewhat confused expression, the Duke was quite surprised.

“Carlos, haven’t you taught her?”

“How could I teach her? She can’t learn techniques that rely on Thunder Order assistance. Besides, Little Syl’s situation… how should I put it, is somewhat special.” As Carlos spoke, he tried to pat my head again, but after I glared at him, he shrugged indifferently and withdrew his half-extended hand, continuing as if nothing had happened, “Her intuition is extremely sharp, with an extraordinary talent for combat. But the sword techniques and footwork used to train knights in the church are all standardized for ordinary people. Such rigid training would be meaningless for her, she can only learn techniques through actual combat.”

“But those aren’t the most urgent things for her. What Little Syl needs to learn most now is control over Order Power… Honestly, I’ve rarely seen anyone who can be this close to the source like her, at least you and I can’t compare to this kid. However, her current use of this power is merely at an entry level, which is why His Holiness arranged for her to attend the Royal Academy.”

After hearing Carlos’s words, I felt somewhat surprised, not expecting him to be so concerned about my affairs……. even though he’s someone who’s never said anything nice to me.

“Scythe, I use it, very well.”

The Duke pondered for a moment after hearing this.

“I understand. Leave the rest to me.”

I nodded, then asked: “How many gold coins?”

Since I’m asking someone for help, it’s only natural to pay appropriate compensation, this is simple logic. But the Duke paused for a moment after hearing my words, then burst into laughter.

“Hahaha, Miss Sylvia, I don’t accept gold coins here, but you’ll have to promise me one thing.”

Equivalent exchange?

That makes sense. As a Duke, he probably has no interest in that small amount of gold coins, so he wants to set conditions for equal contribution. Understandable.

I’m certainly happy not having to pay money, and I believe the Duke won’t make any unreasonable demands of me, so I asked: “What is it?”

Just then, Madam Catherine led several maids into the dining room, placing plates of delicious food one by one on the dining table.

The aroma of food immediately filled my nostrils, and I couldn’t help but twitch my nose slightly, secretly swallowing saliva.

“What are you three discussing together?” Catherine asked curiously.

“We’re just talking about designing weapons for Miss Sylvia.”

“Weapon design? Who’s designing weapons?” Parsifal walked in behind them while yawning, looking like he hadn’t fully woken up, “Peipei, did you sleep well? yawn — Actually, I wanted to chat with you last night, but the old man wouldn’t let me go, it was too cruel.”

“Who are you calling cruel?” Duke Scalliger immediately lost his pleasant expression.

“Ah, old man, you’re here? Sorry sorry, I didn’t see you, ahaha.”

Parsifal gave a dry laugh, then pulled out the chair beside me and sat down, showing me his neat white teeth.

“Hehe, Peipei. Just thinking about you being back makes me so happy, I couldn’t sleep most of the night! Look, do I have dark circles under my eyes…… eh, why do you have dark circles too?”

Looking at his handsome face getting closer as he spoke, I frowned slightly, feeling uncomfortable with his behavior of treating me as Peylo without permission. A feeling of resistance rose in my heart, and I instinctively drew back.

“Parsifal! Come sit over here.” Madam Catherine, being very observant, noticed my reaction and quickly called out to her son.

“Why? I want to sit with Peipei.”

“How old are you now, why are you still acting like a child? Come over.”

“But——”

“Parsifal, listen to your mother.”

“……Oh.”

Watching Parsifal cast a disappointed glance at me before hanging his head and walking to the opposite side, I actually felt somewhat guilty.

Actually, I don’t find Parsifal particularly unlikeable. I know he acts this way because he’s convinced I’m his sister, and I can understand his feelings of recovering something lost when it comes to his family member.

But regrettably, I cannot empathize. Because I don’t have Peylo’s emotions, nor do I know what kind of bond she had with her brother. In my memory, Parsifal is just a stranger I’ve met for the second time.

However, these subtle emotions only flashed by briefly, now isn’t the time to think about these things.

I barely ate any dinner last night, I’m really hungry, can I start eating?

To be able to eat sooner, I quickly gave Carlos a meaningful look, then saw him wink at me, indicating he understood.

“Madam Catherine, did you cook this yourself again?” Carlos asked as if casually.

“Yes. I haven’t cooked in a long time, feeling a bit rusty. Try it and see if it tastes good?”

Just waiting for these words, I immediately picked up a piece of sausage with my fork and started eating it with the fragrant soft bread in big bites.

“How does it taste?”

Looking at Catherine’s slightly expectant gaze, I nodded heavily.

“Mm mm.”

How should I put it, besides the aroma of the food, there was probably some other flavor mixed in there too.

“Parsifal, come with me to the Central Workshop this afternoon.”

“Why? I still need to patrol the West Gate.”

“Let Bella substitute for you, there are more important things to do.”

“What things—”

“We’re going to design weapons for Miss Sylvia, come with me to select materials.”

“Ah, okay.”

“Would Miss Sylvia like to come take a look too?”
