Chapter 21: Dream and Captain Grey
***
In the snow-covered hills, a girl’s frail figure trudged through the snow with difficulty.
“Huff——huff——”
She was breathing heavily, her somewhat childish face filled with fear, turning back to look behind her as she ran.
In the darkness, torches gradually lit up.
“I see her!”
“She’s over there, quick! You all speed up and flank her from the side, we can’t let her escape!”
Hearing the voices from behind, the girl bit her lip, her expression becoming even more panicked.
The biting cold wind cut against her cheeks like knives.
“Father, Mother… save me…”
Her frost-whitened lips trembled as she muttered helplessly, the sound quickly vanishing in the vast snowy winds.
Calling for help was futile.
Besides those who wanted to harm her, no one knew she was here.
The girl could only keep running for her life.
But she didn’t know where to run now, she had long lost her way in this pure white world.
The girl tried hard to widen the distance between herself and those chasing her, but her Body Refinement Power was far too weak. Although she was already exerting all her strength at this point, she could still feel those people getting closer and closer to her.
“Stop!”
“You can’t escape anymore, just surrender obediently! I only want to talk about some things with Lafayette, if you cooperate with me, I promise nothing will go wrong!”
The girl didn’t answer, she no longer had the strength to speak.
The only thing she could do was to keep running like this until she collapsed. Even if she used her last breath, she absolutely could not let them catch her.
“Huff——huff——”
The girl’s breathing began to become labored, she felt her lungs burning with pain, each breath was both physical and mental torture.
She had been running for too long, even her vision was starting to blur. Growing up pampered since childhood, when had she ever suffered like this? This pushed her mental state to the brink of collapse.
At this moment, shouting came from behind again.
“Peipei! Won’t you listen to me anymore!”
Upon hearing these words, the girl’s eyes finally reddened, her snow-white teeth biting her lips until they bled red.
She widened her reddened eyes, trying hard to make her steps faster, but her legs had already started to shake.
“Stop her!”
As the words fell, suddenly several soldiers wearing light armor rushed out from behind the snowy hills on the side, instantly coming within arm’s reach of the girl. Snow sprayed on her face, and the girl could even see the excited look in their eyes at finally catching their prey.
She became somewhat panicked, instinctively waving her small hand lightly in that direction.
“Crash crash——”
Several small ice spikes rose from the ground emanating cold air, instantly piercing through those soldiers’ feet.
“Ah—”
“Little **—damn it!”
The attacking soldiers were pinned to the ground unable to move, letting out screams of agony.
The girl’s body also lost balance because of this, falling hard, but she quickly got up ignoring the pain and continued running forward with heavy steps.
After running not much further, she stopped.
Ahead was a cliff.
The girl tremblingly looked down, the bottom of the cliff was pitch black, impossible to see the bottom.
She fearfully stepped back twice, turned around wanting to find another way out, but found countless soldiers had already surrounded her.
“Click click click——”
Dozens of crossbows all aimed at her.
The girl’s chest heaved violently, showing a desperate look in her eyes.
“Run, why aren’t you running anymore.” A black-haired black-eyed man walked out from among the soldiers, looking at the helpless girl before him, a smug smile appearing on his handsome face, “I told you earlier to listen to me, just wait quietly for your brother to save you. You had to run, come on, run again for me to see!”
“Edward……” The girl looked at the black-haired man grinding her teeth.
“Catch her.” The man waved his hand to the crowd behind him.
“You… don’t come over!”
The girl’s tightly clenched fists trembled slightly, her mouth letting out somewhat timid shouts, but faint frost mist condensed around her body.
Several soldiers who were about to step forward to capture the girl stopped in their tracks upon seeing this scene, looking at each other not daring to take another step forward.
Although everyone knew this girl before them was young and naturally kind-hearted. But even a cornered rabbit will bite, at this moment no one could guarantee she wouldn’t really attack.
The black-haired man showed an urgent and angry expression.
“She’s just a child, what are you afraid of! Go up and catch her!”
Those soldiers were very wary of the black-haired man, their hesitant figures immediately rushed towards the girl without hesitation when they heard his angry roar.
“Crack crack crack!”
Ice mist exploded from beneath the girl’s feet, instantly freezing the soldiers’ ankles firmly to the snowy ground, struggling unable to move forward.
Seeing this, the man let out another angry roar: “What the hell are you all standing there for? Go go go, all of you go! She doesn’t dare to kill people, what are you afraid of!”
Upon hearing this, the soldiers behind the man immediately swarmed forward, frost mist continuously dispersed from beneath the girl’s feet, but ultimately two fists couldn’t fight four hands, after freezing several people she was caught by their combined force.
She began to struggle violently.
“Peipei, just listen to me one more time, come with me. I guarantee with my honor, I absolutely won’t do anything excessive to Count Lafayette.”
“Liar.” Looking at the grinning man not far away, tears fell from the girl’s eyes, her weak voice tearing out a heart-rending shout, “You liar——!!!”
She showed an expression of hatred to the extreme in her eyes, struggling became more violent, using her last strength to shake off the soldiers holding her like a madwoman, but suddenly stumbled, her body tilting backwards.
Falling towards the black cliff.
The girl’s pupils dilated sharply with fear.
“Peipei!”
Reflected in the girl’s pupils was the black-haired man’s somewhat panicked expression.
The next moment, her body fell rapidly.
“Crash boom——”
A series of collision sounds rang in her ears like breaking dried branches, at this moment her mind was blank.
A moment later, a heavy thud.
“Bang——”
…………
I opened my eyes.
As if startled awake, my slightly confused eyes looked around, and after quite a while I finally realized I was in a bedroom, sitting in a chair next to a bookshelf.
I had actually fallen asleep unknowingly while leaning on the desk.
My right hand touched my chest, the violently rising and falling heartbeat seemed to still echo with that intense emotion.
Just now, was that a dream?
……No.
I clearly remembered everything that happened, that scene of empathy.
Dreams wouldn’t have such an immersive reality.
That was… memory?
Was it the memory possessed by this body, that girl named Peylo?
My arm was still pressing on 《Fairy Tales》 that I had been reading halfway through last night, the opened page was the story of Captain Grey, I had fallen asleep while reading halfway through.
《Fairy Tales》 was well preserved, the whole book looked like new, except for these few pages telling Captain Grey’s story which appeared somewhat old.
It seems Peylo really liked this story.
It was a somewhat puzzling story.
Although Captain Grey called himself a captain, besides himself, he only had one picked up little girl as his crew member.
But he had a dream, that one day he could command his own big ship, pass through the most mysterious strait of the Ibos Sea, to search for the legendary treasure.
But this dream couldn’t be fulfilled even until the end of the story, because Captain Grey simply couldn’t afford a ship.
On the last page of the story, the dying Captain Grey said to the girl:
— What’s the difference between people and salted fish if they don’t have dreams.
The now grown-up girl showed a puzzled look:
— Uncle Grey, then did you find your dream?
Captain Grey looked at the girl with a gentle expression:
— My dream, she has already grown up.
Later the girl reached the other side of the strait, but she didn’t go looking for treasure, instead she buried Captain Grey on that small island.
This was the end of the story.
I looked up at the sky, it was still gray and dim at this moment.
Rubbing my somewhat tired eyes, I stood up and walked to sit down by the bed.
The flames crackled burning in the fireplace.
After blanking out for a moment, I lowered my head and pulled open my collar, looking at the slightly protruding small breasts on my chest, as if possessed I reached my hand in.
Then gently pinched one of the nipples.
“Mmm——”
An electrifying numbness spread from my chest throughout my body, my mouth unconsciously let out a soft moan.
“…Still alive.”
Whether it was the feeling at my fingertips, or my body’s response, it all proved that I was indeed a living human body now.
With feelings, with emotions.
Not how a monster should be.
But that girl named Peylo, that girl in the dream who had the exact same face as me, just somewhat more childish… was probably dead.
Then what exactly am I?
Am I a human girl, or a monster from the Abyss?
Am I Peylo, or Chen Yuxuan?
Can’t figure it out.
I lay on my side on the bed, my body restlessly tossing and turning, wanting to sleep a bit more but unable to fall asleep no matter what.
When eating breakfast, Carlos looked shocked as soon as he saw me.
“What did you do last night?”
What did I do? I didn’t do anything. I tilted my head somewhat puzzled.
“Dark circles, dark circles.” Carlos pointed at his own eyes, his expression very exaggerated, “You look like you were ravaged by a troll all night long.”
“…Didn’t sleep well.” I said listlessly, not in the mood to deal with his boring jokes.
“What’s wrong Little Syl, why did you suddenly become so uninteresting.”
I glared at him angrily, sitting at the dining table sulking by myself.
“Miss Sylvia, are you feeling unwell?” Lord Scalliger walked into the dining room from outside, immediately asked when he saw my somewhat haggard face.
I didn’t answer him, but asked him another question instead.
“Lord Duke, who is Lafayette.”
Lord Scalliger immediately widened his eyes.
“You… did you remember something?”
“Peylo’s, brother?”
