Chapter 13: Guguo Grass
***
“Go check it out,” the Knight Commander ordered, and after a moment’s thought, he reminded again, “Be careful. If you find anything suspicious… kill without mercy.”
“Yes.”
After receiving the order, the church knight led four other knights and slowly walked towards the front of the team.
I turned my head to look. The distant view was obscured by heavy snow, visibility was extremely low, and I could faintly see some figures gathering on the road ahead, surrounding a horned carriage and talking.
Did something happen?
It would be interesting if it turned into a highway robbery plot… though I don’t think anyone would be that stupid. To dare to do such a thing after seeing over a hundred church knights would be declaring war against the Holy Church. Not many people in this world have such courage, and those who do have such courage wouldn’t possess such strength.
“Little Syl, what are you spacing out for, aren’t you coming up?” Carlos had been holding the horned carriage curtain for me, and seeing me standing there for so long without moving, he urged impatiently.
“Oh.”
I glared at him quite dissatisfied, then stopped paying attention to what was happening ahead, carefully got into the carriage and sat down, silently fidgeting with my fingers.
After hesitating for a while, I still decided to speak to Carlos.
“Carlos, I just saw, a hallucination.”
“Hallucination?” Carlos raised an eyebrow when he heard this, “What hallucination, Valen Empire’s Osmiru cake?”
“…Not that. I saw, people I don’t know.” I resisted the urge to throw him out of the horned carriage and patiently explained to him.
“People you don’t know?” Carlos realized I wasn’t joking and finally became serious, “Are you sure you’re not joking, not snow blindness or something? Can you describe the details to me, what did that person look like?”
“The appearance, forgot. Just, saw people. It seems…” My delicate features scrunched together tightly as I tried hard to recall the images that had flashed before my eyes, “It seems there was also, a black castle. The snowy ground, feels familiar, I’ve been here before.”
“You mean to say, you feel this place is familiar, you’ve been here before, and you’ve seen someone?” Carlos unconsciously stroked his stubble again, “…That shouldn’t be possible, how could you have been here before.”
“Not exactly.” I frustratedly grabbed my hair, my mind in chaos, somewhat unsure how to express that strange feeling to him.
“The black castle you mentioned, can you describe what it looks like?”
“Black, very big.”
“…That’s basically saying nothing. Be more specific.” Carlos frowned.
“Against a mountain, has very pointy towers, huge bell tower… and a bridge.”
“A bridge?”
“Yes. A very long, very long bridge.” I opened my pretty eyes wide looking at him, trying hard to spread my arms, puffing up my small chest and stretching my arms straight, attempting to give Carlos a more direct sense of the bridge’s length, “On the bridge there were also, many birds.”
Carlos frowned deeply, pondered silently for a while, then suddenly widened his eyes.
“Hey, hey, hey. Little Syl, what you’re describing… could it be Shanter Castle?”
“Don’t know.”
Really now, I’m the one asking you, why are you asking me, I’ve never been to Shanter Castle.
“Only Shanter Castle matches your description, that’s the residence of Duke Scalliger’s family, and also our destination for this journey. But how do you know what Shanter Castle looks like when you’ve never been there… Hey Little Syl, could it be that you have the ability to predict the future…” Carlos’s face full of disbelief, spoke without thinking, but immediately shook his head in denial, “No, that’s impossible… how could such an ability exist, this isn’t reasonable…”
“…”
I was somewhat speechless. Ability to predict the future? What a wild imagination, how silly.
Seems this guy doesn’t know what’s going on either, probably not because of Order Power, maybe I just haven’t rested well.
I immediately lost all interest, then suddenly remembered another matter, and gently crooked my finger at Carlos.
“Carlos.” I looked at him with a serious face and said.
“Hmm?”
Carlos heard me call his name, brought his face closer with a serious expression, and stared at me with equally serious eyes.
“That, um, cake. Is it delicious?”
After saying this, I saw Carlos’s mouth twitch slightly.
“…Not delicious.”
He crossed his legs, put his hands behind his head, and instantly returned to his dead fish eyes state, speaking somewhat carelessly.
“You’re lying.”
I rolled my eyes at him.
Although Carlos was quite familiar with the Valen Empire, he wasn’t the type to pay attention to food, so any food taste he could remember must be amazing.
Just as I was about to ask more questions, suddenly my body swayed as the horned carriage slowly started moving.
“Huh, did they resolve the problem up ahead?” Carlos asked casually.
I shook my head at him indicating I didn’t know, raised my small hand to lift a corner of the carriage curtain, quite curiously poked my head out to look around, and happened to meet eyes with the Knight Commander, who grinned at me.
“Nothing serious, Miss Sylvia.” The Knight Commander pointed to the merchant group diagonal ahead who had already moved their broken cart aside and were busy transporting goods, “Those are merchants transporting supplies for the church, they’re delivering vegetables and fruits stockpiled in Narangard to orphanages in the Valen Empire for the children to eat. But the axle broke due to heavy snow on the way.”
“Oh.” I responded upon hearing this, shifting my gaze to the merchants who were getting closer to me, as they were moving goods onto another horned carriage.
The team slowly moved forward, knights marching with clanking steps, passing shoulder to shoulder with the merchant team.
The lead merchant, who was continuously warming his hands with his breath, in an unguarded moment when he turned his head, his gaze interlocked with mine.
Then he just stood there frozen. Even his words of command were cut off mid-sentence as he stared at me blankly.
I saw that hint of disgusting desire in his eyes, immediately felt sick to my stomach, and quickly lowered the carriage curtain.
“What’s wrong?” Carlos was starting to doze off and asked listlessly.
“Nothing.” I shook my head at him.
The horned carriage traveled about 3-4 kilometers when the sky completely darkened. The Knight Commander directed the team to stop at a higher elevated ravine, then the knights set up tents and began making camp.
I gracefully jumped down from the carriage and walked towards the forest not far away.
“Where are you going?”
Carlos also jumped down, stood in the snow stretching lazily, his half-open eyes seeing me walking into the distance, casually asked.
“Nature calls.”
“…Oh.” He shrugged upon hearing this, “Want me to accompany you?”
“Go to hell.” I quickened my pace.
…………
The forest at night was frighteningly quiet.
The Valen Empire has winter all four seasons, countless withered leaves and branches were pressed under a thin layer of accumulated snow.
I looked around and didn’t detect any signs of people, so I boldly unleashed black energy, and the moment I opened my palm, five fist-sized black fireballs burst forth, entangling around my body as they darted about, making the forest that was already covered in a layer of silver frost appear even more pale white.
Pricking up my ears, carefully listening to the movements around.
Rustle rustle rustle——
“Bang——!”
In an instant one fireball flew out, striking the grass not far away with a muffled sound, grass mixed with soil, along with some creature’s minced flesh splattered up, white smoke slowly drifted towards me, and my body also shook violently.
**After it was over, I frowned deeply and waved my hand to collect the remaining four fireballs back into my body.
The commotion was too big, and also… felt somewhat cruel, this method made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
Better use black smoke instead, won’t make these small animals die in such a mutilated state… although I know this is just my self-consolation, but I’m not a saint, since I don’t want to kill people, and don’t want to become a monster that devours everything again, this is the only way.
The faint dampness from the inner lining made my face slightly red, I knew what that was.
But this was something unavoidable every time.
Putting aside those messy thoughts, I continued wandering in the forest looking for the next prey, when suddenly I heard voices coming, my heart jumped and I immediately hid behind a tree.
Not far away, there seemed to be vaguely four or five figures, looking at their clothes they appeared to be people from the merchant group from earlier.
“…Pick up the big ones, what’s the use of such small ones for burning?”
“I can’t carry the big ones.”
“Fine then, can’t even collect firewood properly, what else can you do? Bringing you along was really a mistake…”
“Hey, say, did you all see that little beauty sitting in that carriage earlier?”
“Didn’t see, what about it?”
“I saw her! Although just a quick glimpse… that beauty, tsk tsk tsk, if I could spend one night in bed with her, even if it meant living 10 years less, no, 20 years less I’d be willing.”
…Who are they talking about, me?
I pursed my lips holding back the urge to go eliminate them.
Go X yourself. What nonsense? Actually fantasizing about this manly man? Do you know how to write the word ‘death’?
“…Is it that exaggerated?”
“Really! You all didn’t see, those eyes… My goodness, I’m done for, I’ll never forget this in my life.”
“Come on, you? Why don’t you take a good look at yourself in the mirror when you pee, how could a young lady of that caliber spend the night with you? Keep dreaming.”
“Oh like you could do better!? With your weak kidneys, you probably couldn’t last even 3 seconds, truly pitiful, completely unable to satisfy her…”
“Bullshit, have you tried? Let me tell you, that little beauty is clearly an untouched virgin, if I get the chance, wouldn’t I make her experience heaven and earth? Hahaha!”
Hearing this I wanted to curse.
What kind of things are… really regret staying here to listen to their vulgar words, probably won’t be able to sleep tonight from being so disgusted.
I strongly resisted the urge to burn these people to death with fireballs, frowning deeply as I turned to leave.
“Ah—, really want to smoke some guguo grass… but with church knights watching tonight, probably won’t get the chance.”
Guguo grass? What’s that?
I stopped in my tracks.
