Chapter 11: Going to the Valen Empire
***
“Alright, no problem. But… I’m curious about some things, may I ask you a few questions?”
Carlos gently massaged my back, asking casually as if in passing, though his eyelids would occasionally lift discreetly, carefully observing my expression.
“…What is it, ask.”
Having caught his demeanor fully, I replied without much patience.
“Your body… besides being able to use the chaos power of the Abyss, it’s no different from humans in any aspect… you understand what I mean, right?”
“Mm.”
I closed my eyes, finding a comfortable position to lean back in the chair.
“Then, between this human body and that abyssal body I killed back then, which one is your true form?” At this point, Carlos carefully chose his words before continuing, “That might be hard to understand, so let me ask differently, can you change back to your original form?”
“…Don’t know.”
I wasn’t lying to him, I was also completely confused about this matter, never having figured out the connection between the human body and monster body. However… I had a vague feeling, just a feeling.
That perhaps I could still transform back to my abyssal form, just haven’t mastered how to do it yet.
And I dare not try. If I changed back and couldn’t return… I’d rather continue living in this female body.
This was something I didn’t plan to tell Carlos.
“When you fought with the Endless Abyss in the village, I saw those cyan arms, didn’t you feel anything unusual then?”
“No. It was like… controlling my own arms.”
“How strange…” Carlos stroked his stubble, standing there muttering to himself, “Don’t understand… doesn’t make sense.”
“It is strange.”
“…Well, nevermind, I was just curious. But if anything happens, you must tell me right away.”
When saying this, Carlos appeared relaxed, seemingly casual, but his eyes revealed a certain genuine emotion.
I nodded to him.
Afterwards, Carlos gave me a few more instructions about my physical condition.
He actually didn’t have much experience in this area either, what he could say were just caring but nutritionless words like “don’t catch a cold.”
These words were heartwarming.
Carlos was probably the person who knew my situation most thoroughly. He had seen my horrifying true form, seen me reap countless lives with a wave of my hand, then devour their souls… though Carlos told me those probably weren’t souls, but something else he couldn’t understand either.
When we first met, Carlos confronted me with his blade, giving no room for explanation.
I remember how he looked at me then.
Cold, disgusted, and even a hint of… hatred.
But at least at this moment, in his subconscious, he was treating me as a human, not an abyssal monster.
This point, perhaps even he himself hadn’t realized.
According to Carlos, he was certain that his two sword strikes then were enough to kill me. Just like other monsters he had killed before, the body would turn to ash and disappear forever. There had never been a case of becoming human after death, I must be a very special existence.
But what is a special existence? Carlos knew too little information, I thought his understanding was incorrect.
For humans, everything about the Abyss is unknown. Although the Church has names for every Abyssal that has appeared, like the Gluttony Abyss that caused the Valen Disaster two years ago. The Endless Abyss that caught the small village off guard, while I was called the White Night Abyss, but people still prefer to call them monsters. Because in their understanding, the Abyss is without rationality, only following instincts to devour all life.
But I know that’s not how it is.
During the battle in the village, I had brief communication with the Endless Abyss. I know it was very intelligent, and clearly had its own clear thoughts and logic, not lacking rationality as humans think.
Just… it seemed to be controlled by something. Or rather, its mind was clouded by something.
But I’m like it, both coming from the abyssal mire, yet why wasn’t I controlled, and why did I become a young girl like this?
The will of god it mentioned then… what was that?
Fundamentally, what is the Abyss? Why does this world have such a purely destructive form of life?
These questions, even I as a monster cannot explain clearly.
But I believe, one day the answers will become clear.
…………
Not long after Carlos left, two monks came in to lay new bed sheets for me, then I handed them the old sheets bundled together.
“In here, abyssal things, very dangerous. Don’t open it, dispose of it quickly.”
I earnestly instructed them, and the two monks were greatly startled upon hearing this.
“This… Miss Sylvia. If it’s such a dangerous thing, is it really okay to just throw it away like this?”
“Mm. I’ve already, dealt with it, just throw it away.”
“Perhaps we should have the Archbishop come examine it again…”
“No need, go quickly.”
“Well, if you say so, Miss…”
The two monks carried the sheets, looking back every few steps, as if carrying a time bomb that could explode at any moment, trembling as they walked out the door.
With a “bang” the door closed, I suddenly felt exhausted, flopping back onto the bed and wrapping my small body tightly in the blanket, taking a nice nap.
This sleep lasted until afternoon.
Carlos came to tell me that the Church’s monks had found those children. Besides the two boys and three girls I mentioned, there were over ten children living by theft hidden in that area. After some education, the monks sent all those children to the orphanage in the Emerald Capital, so they wouldn’t have to worry about livelihood anymore, telling me I could rest assured.
That’s good, finally one less worry.
No longer needing to worry about those children, and now fully energized from sleep, I started feeling hungry again, discussing with Carlos what to eat for dinner.
There were nearly two days left before our departure time arranged by Engel, I planned to try as many of the Emerald Capital’s famous foods as possible within the limited time before leaving.
But after asking Carlos, I found he wasn’t actually very familiar with this place either.
“My hometown is across the sea in the East Continent, I grew up there and only came to the West Continent after becoming an adult. These past few years I’ve been mostly active in the Valen Empire, I’m not very familiar with Sylgaria.”
Carlos said so.
“East Continent? West Continent?”
“Yes, the continent we’re on now is the West Continent, and across the distant sea there’s the East Continent, where one of humanity’s four royal cities, Norwaghe, is located… has no one told you about these things either?”
I shook my head upon hearing this.
Previously I only had contact with villagers, and the vast majority of them had never been further than the neighboring town in their entire lives, their knowledge of the world was pitifully little.
“Then let me explain it to you briefly.” Carlos pressed his temples rather painfully, a pained expression appearing on his face, “…This world we inhabit is divided into two continents by the Ibos Sea, the East and West Continents. Humans have established countless homes here, among which the four largest countries, one is the Sylgaria Republic where we are now, and our two destinations we’re heading to, the Valen Empire and Isenbell Kingdom, and lastly my homeland, which has the largest territory and population, the Yade Federation across the sea. Besides these there are also four royal cities, namely Sylgaria’s capital, the agriculturally renowned Emerald Capital; the Central Workshop of the Valen Empire, the industrially famous Winter City; Isenbell’s royal capital Order City, formerly called Kanri, which is also the origin of Order Power; and finally, the world trade capital, Norwaghe in the East Continent. That’s roughly how it is, human society has developed for over a thousand years, and their achievements far exceed just these. There are countless other large cities and small countries, many interesting things, use your eyes to see and ears to hear, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future, you can gradually come to understand. Of course, after you get to the Royal Academy, the teachers will also tell you lots of knowledge, I hope you can see more of the good aspects… damn, I’m terrible at explaining these things to people, my head hurts…”
But actually he explained quite clearly, giving me a new understanding of this world right away.
Only two continents… seems not that big.
I looked at Carlos’s cynical face.
He was very young, at first glance seeming to be in his early thirties, but if you could ignore his beard, he seemed to be only in his twenties.
I suddenly became curious about his age.
“Carola, how old are you?”
“Why are you asking this? And what’s Carola, some kind of flying horse carriage?”
“Curious.”
“But I don’t want to tell you, age is a man’s biggest secret.”
“…” This person was still so boring, a conversation ender.
“By the way, there’s a famous library in the Emerald Capital, it houses renowned books from all over the world, you can learn about whatever you want, want to take a look?”
“No.”
“Eh— Why?”
“Food first.”
“…Just thinking about eating.”
“Mm hmm~”
…………
Two days of touring and eating passed in a flash, and my physical condition had improved a lot too.
On the afternoon of the third day, the weather was fine and sunny.
Carlos and I packed our luggage and once again boarded the Holy Church’s horse carriage. Different from last time, this journey would have Church knights traveling with us.
Roughly looking over, there were about a hundred people.
These knights belonged to the Holy Church Third Legion Infantry 56th Squad, I remember their commander… had stabbed me once before, what was his name? Anyway, he was said to be in a coma, don’t know how he is now.
Carlos told me that the Third Legion’s main duty was guarding the Saint George Bank, and this journey’s purpose was to escort twenty carriages of supplies to the bank’s branch in the Valen Empire together with currency exchangers, most of which were Emerald gold coins.
This journey was said to be confidential.
I guess Engel must have thought, since Carlos and I were going to the Valen Empire anyway, might as well go together. With us two there, there’s nothing to fear no matter what happens.
Originally thought we had to wait three days because of some force majeure, turns out it was just to be free bodyguards… yet he himself left the Emerald Capital the second day after the conferment ceremony.
Tsk, this person.
Well, if not for this I wouldn’t have had time to eat so many good foods.
“Sir Carlos, Miss Sylvia, if you have no other matters, shall we depart now?”
The knight captain in golden armor respectfully bowed and asked us.
“Mm, let’s go, thank you for your trouble.”
The knight captain shook his head, saying nothing more, giving hand signals to the troops.
“Depart!”
The horse carriage slowly moved forward, advancing towards the Valen Empire.
