Chapter 10: Orphanage
***
Early morning.
Gentle sunlight poured into the room, piercing me awake from my dreams.
“Mmm……”
Letting out a sticky groan, I slightly furrowed my brows, half-squinting as I opened one blurry eye to gaze out the window.
……Too bright, how annoying.
Feeling it was still early, drowsy me was too lazy to get up and draw the curtains. So I tried to turn over, wanting to face away from the window and sleep a bit longer, but at the moment I turned my head—
“Ah! Ouch……my hair—”
I pulled my own hair.
That instantly hurt so much that all my sleepiness vanished. Grimacing as I sat up, I irritably ran my hands through my hair several times, messing up the smooth black waterfall, causing several strands to float down and fall onto the blanket.
……Damn.
This happens every time when I’m half asleep, this isn’t the first time!
Why do I never learn!
Do all girls get troubled by this problem?
……Maybe I should just find a chance to shave my head bald one day.
While I was thinking viciously, I moved my legs wanting to get out of bed, but as soon as I moved I felt that bit of slick warmth between my legs.
……Did I wet the bed?
My heart suddenly jumped, and I immediately reached my hand under the blanket to feel.
No, it leaked through.
I XXX……
Not having time to curse, I yanked the blanket open.
The nightgown I was wearing had rolled up to my waist due to my restless sleeping position, exposing the white lace-trimmed panties to the air, now slightly bulging from the sanitary pad, with threads of crimson seeping through, flowing down along the crevice and staining a small pool of blood on the sheets below my bottom.
……With this much bleeding, even a pad couldn’t save me?
I changed it before bed last night!
What should I do now, this manly man can’t lose face like this, if it’s discovered I’m done for, I need to hide the sheets quickly.
Just as I was frowning deeply, at a loss for what to do, suddenly there came a “knock knock” at the door, followed by Carlos’s somewhat lazy voice.
“Little Syl, are you awake?……Huh, how come the door isn’t locked……I’m coming in.”
Oh no, I forgot to lock the door before bed last night!
“Wait, don’t—”
I hurriedly called out to the door, but it was already too late.
With a “creak”, the door had already been pushed open a crack, and Carlos’s scruffy bearded face poked through.
“Little Syl, how come you sleep without locking mmmph!”
Before he could finish speaking, a pillow hit him square in the face with perfect accuracy.
“Get out——!!”
I screamed at the top of my lungs.
The pillow hitting his face didn’t hurt at all, and Carlos still seemed confused about the situation, when he suddenly saw me grab the vase sitting on the bedside table. He was startled with fright, and as he withdrew his head there was even a faint spark of electricity, muttering “what’s wrong with you”, but upon seeing my fierce expression in that instant, he slammed the door shut with a “bang”.
I sat on the bed hugging the large vase, my small chest heaving rapidly with anger.
Carlos that bastard almost discovered it.
Next time he dares to push open the door without my permission, I’ll split his head in half!
I thought vengefully, then gently put the vase back in its original place. Just as I was about to get out of bed, I suddenly stumbled.
Dizzy and lightheaded, in a foul mood.
Mild cramping pain came from my lower abdomen.
Even though I had just woken up, I felt weak and powerless all over.
I stayed dazed for quite a while before slowly climbing out of bed, laboriously pulling off the sheets and stuffing them under the bed, taking out a new pad from my bundle to change into, throwing the old one under the bed as well. After checking everywhere and feeling there were no more traces left, I finally trudged to the door and shoved it open forcefully.
Standing foolishly outside the door in a dazed state, Carlos was startled and immediately closed his eyes, raising his arms to protect his face, but the imagined vase attack didn’t come.
After quite a while, Carlos finally gathered his courage to secretly open his eyes, discovering that my gaze toward him was as if looking at an idiot.
“……Kakashi, what is it?”
I asked him expressionlessly.
“Ahem.” Carlos lowered his arms, somewhat embarrassedly rubbing the stubble on his face, “Well, just came to see if you were up yet……wanted to check where you went last night.”
“Where I went is none of your damn business.”
“No, but His Majesty the King of Sylgaria specially came to see you yesterday, you could at least show your face before sneaking away.”
Carlos showed a helpless expression.
“……I don’t want to.”
I still maintained an unmoved expression, which made Carlos quite puzzled.
“……What’s wrong with you, you’ve seemed very off since yesterday? Engel said you weren’t feeling well, did something happen? Also, yesterday during the day……”
“None! Of your! Business!” I interrupted him fiercely, then immediately changed the subject, “Good timing that you’re here, I have something to ask you.”
“……What is it?”
Carlos’s gaze toward me was somewhat uncertain.
“Come in first.”
“I……better not? We can talk here.”
“……Come in!”
I impatiently grabbed his arm and yanked him into the room, slamming the door shut.
“Wh-what are you doing?”
Carlos hugged himself, clearly acting like a teenage boy about to be violated, though that extremely frightened look in his eyes secretly held a hint of playfulness.
I frowned slightly, not in the mood to deal with his boring joke, turning to walk to the desk and pull out the chair to sit down, then nodded toward another chair, giving Carlos a look.
“……What is this about?”
Carlos sat down warily, filled with confusion.
“Well, last night……”
I haltingly told him about what happened last night.
“……So, you just snuck out to play last night?”
Carlos lazily put his hands behind his head, shifting to a comfortable position leaning sideways in the chair, drooping his dead fish eyes to look around boredly.
“Not about that. Those children, what should we do?”
But Carlos seemed to not have heard what I said at all, somewhat absentmindedly sniffing his nose.
“Where did your sheets go?”
“……Carlos.”
I called his name with a black face, the warning meaning in it he should surely be able to hear.
Indeed, Carlos immediately sat up straight upon hearing it, looking at me with complete seriousness.
Seeing him correct his attitude, I nodded satisfiedly.
“Those children……”
“Ah, I understand now.” Suddenly, Carlos’s face lit up in realization as he clapped his hands, “You got your period, right? No wonder your temper suddenly became so explosive, haha! Did it start yesterday? Is this your first time, or have you had it before? ……Ah, your strange behavior at the knighting ceremony……”
He spoke his deductions with animated expressions, getting more and more excited. Then discovering that I was motionlessly staring at him like looking at a dead person, he finally felt a bit of trepidation, and his speaking pace gradually slowed down.
I gave him a sweet smile, standing up to walk toward the bed.
“Wait, what are you going to do……let’s talk this through, put down the vase first! A gentleman uses words not violence, we can sit down and resolve any conflicts, don’t do anything rash! This will only intensify the conflict oh sh—”
Carlos dodged to the side as the vase whooshed past his head with a whistling sound, smashing against the wall with a “crash”.
He wiped some cold sweat from his somewhat frightened state, but turned his head to see me charging at him like an angry little lioness with raised fists.
“Calm down ow, ouch——”
Little fists rained down on his face and body. Carlos winced in pain, immediately using his old trick of finding an opening to grab and hold my hands.
“Okay okay, stop hitting, I surrender.” Carlos begged for mercy.
What the hell is okay!
I opened my eyes wide, raised my head and headbutted his chest.
“Oof——”
Carlos let out a grunt from my hit, immediately stumbling back several steps, holding his chest and starting to cough.
“Cough cough—, okay Little Syl, I apologize, I’m a jerk, alright? Do you feel better?”
“No——!”
I shouted at him.
“Then what to do?” Carlos spread his hands, “How about I sing you a song?”
“No!”
“……Little Syl, come sit down and calm down.” Carlos walked over to me with an ingratiating smile, carefully grabbing my shoulders to push me back to sit in the chair, gently patting my back to help me calm down, “Let’s talk about the real issue.”
“……”
I wanted to tell him angrily that I didn’t want to talk anymore, but as soon as I thought of those poor little girls, I forcefully suppressed my inner rage and looked at him somewhat pitifully.
“I was actually listening seriously to what you said earlier, the place you went last night was the ruins of Emerald Capital……What I want to tell you is, there are too many people in this world who are toyed with by fate. Natural disasters, banditry, plagues……these factors can easily destroy a family. Too many people become displaced, too many children lose support and become homeless orphans……”
At this point, Carlos paused.
“Little Syl, I know you urgently want to do something for them. But one person’s power is limited, even if you could give them more gold coins, what problems would that solve? They’ll run out eventually. Even thinking negatively, your kindness might bring them disaster they can’t bear. So on this matter, just listen to me and don’t worry about it, leave it to the Holy Church. The church has orphanages specially established for these homeless children, we just need to send them there.”
“Orphanage?” I asked somewhat puzzled.
“Yes, orphanage. The Holy Church sets up such an institution in every major city, taking in those children who have lost their families, providing them shelter, teaching them skills to survive.”
“So, you mean, find Engel?”
I pouted slightly.
“I’ll go tell him. Little Syl, don’t look down on him just because of how he appears. I’ve known him for many years, I know he’s a very reliable person.”
When saying these words, Carlos’s gaze toward me revealed unprecedented seriousness.
“……I want to go see those children again.”
“None of your business, what could you do if you went? Just rest well, do you need me to get you a hot water bottle or something?”
Hearing this I lowered my head, my cheeks flushing red.
“No need……help me, get new sheets.”
