Chapter 22: Abyssal Battle (4)
***
On the winding mountain path, villagers with disheveled appearances moved hastily with dejected looks.
Behind them, the outline of their village where they had lived for many years was still faintly visible.
That was their home for survival, and if possible, no one would want to leave. However, looking at the black sun that symbolized death, and hearing the dull rumbling sounds occasionally coming from the village, no one had the courage to look back.
Among the crowd, Elia had an unmistakable worry on her face.
“Barry……” the girl softly called her brother’s name, as if wanting to say something but not knowing how to begin.
“……What is it.”
The boy named Barry was equally downcast.
“Do you think Little Syl will come back to find us?”
“……She definitely will. Sister, you saw it too, Little Syl is a Pontifical Knight…… Sister, do you know what that means?”
“……I guess it means she’s a very, very powerful knight?”
“She’s more than just powerful!” Barry tried to force a smile, attempting to comfort his sister, or perhaps just hypnotizing himself.
“The title of Pontifical Knight, although it sounds similar to Church Knight, has a completely different meaning. Knight is just an honorific title the church gives to warriors, sister, you shouldn’t think of a Pontifical Knight as just a slightly more powerful knight!”
“So… Little Syl is extremely powerful then, that tiny thing? More powerful than father?”
“How can father compare to a Pontifical Knight, although he’s quite powerful too……” Barry scratched his head in frustration, “How should I explain this to you…… Oh right, you know about Sword Saint Ryan!”
“Of course I know! The great hero who single-handedly slayed the demon of Hippodor 20 years ago and saved humanity from disaster! Everyone knows that, don’t treat me like an idiot.”
“Then what if I tell you that he is one of the Pontifical Knights?”
Elia’s eyes instantly widened, her face full of disbelief.
“You mean……”
“And you know what else? Queen Elizabeth, she’s your most admired person, right?”
“You’re not going to tell me……”
“She’s also a Pontifical Knight~”
Barry started showing off his knowledge proudly, seemingly temporarily forgetting about leaving their homeland.
“So you see, Pontifical Knights aren’t just ordinary knights, it’s a title the Holy Church bestows upon heroes.”
“Then, the Flame Lapria……” Elia trembled with excitement.
“You guessed right!”
“So that means, Little Syl……”
“What are you two talking about?”
Allen, who was walking ahead, asked curiously.
“About the Pontifical Knight.” Barry shrugged and said.
“Oh, you mean those legendary heroes?”
“Allen! How do you know about this too!”
“……Is there anyone who doesn’t know about this?”
“Haha, sister is stupid, that’s why she doesn’t know.”
Barry mercilessly mocked his sister.
“……”
Seeing his fiancee’s face turn red, Allen immediately realized he had said something wrong, so he chose to stay quiet.
“So you see, since Little Syl is a Pontifical Knight, she must be as powerful as them, sister, you don’t need to worry…… nothing will happen.”
The last words he mumbled seemed more like he was telling himself.
“But that monster looked really powerful too……”
Just then, the ground suddenly trembled slightly.
Following that, a dazzling white light came from the distance, casting the crowd’s faces in a ghastly pale.
“Boom——”
With a muffled explosion, the villagers began to grow restless.
“……Look, what’s that?”
“Seems like that black sun……”
“That sun, it seems to be…… exploding?”
“Looks like it……”
“Does this mean Little Syl won!”
As the white light gradually dissipated, the black sun in the sky had completely disappeared.
“Barry! It’s Little Syl! It must be her! She won!”
Elia excitedly grabbed Barry’s hands and jumped up.
Barry also had a joyful expression, but being a boy, he was much calmer than Elia.
“Don’t rush, Elia, let’s wait and see……”
“It must be Little Syl’s victory! The monster has disappeared! Can we go back now?”
Elia made to run back, but Barry quickly grabbed her.
“Sister! Wait a bit more, just wait a little longer. I know you’re anxious, I am too, but what if the battle isn’t over yet, we…… we’ll just be causing trouble if we go……”
Barry bit his lip until it bled.
The one fighting the monster over there was the person he liked, yet he could do nothing.
How could he be content! How could he not want to go!
“……Maybe the black sun was just temporarily destroyed, none of us knows the exact situation in the village right now. Elia, better listen to Barry, it’s safer. We should trust in the Pontifical Knight’s power.”
Allen’s thinking was relatively more mature, that was the instinct of a future hunter.
“Allen! What are you saying!” Elia gnashed her teeth, her suppressed emotions finally exploding at this moment, pointing at Allen with red eyes, “What Pontifical Knight! What great hero! I don’t care!! Allen, do you know who’s risking their life to protect everyone over there? It’s my sister!!!”
“I know……”
“With such a huge commotion, she must be injured! She must be bleeding a lot! She must be in pain, maybe she’s lying on the ground unable to move right now…… No, I have to go check on her.”
Elia shook off Barry’s hand and ran towards the village.
“Elia!!” Barry chased after her.
Allen looked at the villagers who were hesitating in place.
They had all heard Elia’s words, showing hesitation on their faces, but still didn’t dare to take action.
“……Tch.”
Gritting his teeth, he stepped forward towards the two who had run ahead.
…………
“Roar——!!”
With a roar like a tsunami and mountain collapse, the ground would slightly shake with each step Dabai took.
That attack was extremely powerful, the white beam had swept out a deep trench in the ground, which was now hissing with white steam, and the rushing heat could be felt even from over 10 meters away.
The monster’s figure had long disappeared.
“Dabai!! It’s me, over here…… cough cough.”
As soon as I spoke, I coughed up another small mouthful of blood, my chest felt like it was being stabbed with needles, even breathing was somewhat difficult.
“Hrrrr hrrrr.”
Dabai heard my voice and slowly walked over with heavy steps.
I painfully turned over, lying on my back spread-eagled.
Thank goodness, it’s over.
Elia and the others are finally safe.
“Hehe, ha…… cough cough.”
So tired.
Dabai reached out its paw and picked me up.
“Ss—— Dabai, gentler, it hurts……”
My body hurt terribly with any movement, not sure which wound was pulled, anyway there wasn’t a place that didn’t hurt.
This time the internal injuries were clearly more serious. During the first fall, because I had the black smoke’s protection, I only injured my waist, nothing major. But during the second fall, I was only focused on striking desperately, almost forgot to use the black smoke for protection, only remembered at the last moment before landing, and in the rush the black smoke’s density wasn’t enough, ultimately I was thrown about badly, still unable to stand up even now.
If Dabai hadn’t arrived in time, I, weighing 42-48 kg, would probably have died here.
Still lack experience, easy to get carried away in fights.
In this kind of high-level battle, being reckless is extremely suicidal behavior. I pulled that thing down from the sky, but it was fine while I got myself half killed from the fall.
At this moment, I suddenly intensely hated that Beard Knight guy.
When you should appear you run off who knows where, when you shouldn’t appear you pop up like a ghost, always suddenly appearing to scare me. Isn’t eliminating monsters supposed to be your job?
Really…… such a noob move.
Knight trash.
I twisted the corner of my mouth.
Dabai carefully held me in its palm, lowering its huge head to look at me.
“……What are you looking at?”
“Hrrrr hrrrr.”
“Put me, on your shoulder, need to rest.”
Getting a bit sleepy…… no wait, shouldn’t I see a doctor at this time?
After all, with my delicate little body, falling from over 100 meters twice……
No good, I feel like I need emergency treatment.
“Dabai, you……”
Before I could finish speaking, I felt a violent shake. Dabai’s reaction was extremely quick, instantly turning around, protecting me against its chest.
The next moment, black smoke swept in from all directions.
“Roar——!!”
This time, there was pain in Dabai’s roar.
“Dabai!” I called out in panic.
What’s going on? That thing, after taking such a destructive attack head-on, still isn’t dead?!!
“Dabai, put me, down!”
I was protected in Dabai’s claws, couldn’t see anything, and didn’t dare to use black smoke for fear of hurting it, my heart anxious.
But Dabai didn’t listen to me, or rather, it couldn’t understand what I was saying.
“【Abyssal Language】Slaughter.”
The moment I heard this voice I panicked terribly.
Struggling desperately to break free from Dabai’s claws, I fell to the ground, the pain making me grunt.
Looking up, all I could see was black energy blocking out the sky. Dabai was completely wrapped up, its white fur curling and withering as if it had been scorched by fire.
It angrily turned its head back, opening its ferocious mouth.
“Hum…… hum…… hum……”
Countless white light spots instantly lit up in the air, then were sucked into Dabai’s mouth, condensing into a light ball bigger than its head.
“Boom——!!”
The intense white beam shot out again, breaking through the black smoke layer by layer, revealing the monster’s figure.
The moment I saw that thing, I leaped up using an ice pillar, black flames igniting in mid-air as I swept past.
The monster’s armor had become tattered and broken, black liquid constantly dripping from the gaps, looking quite severely injured. But its body was still agile, its lower tentacles coiling as it dodged Dabai’s attack by sweeping into the air, while simultaneously raising its withered right hand to counter-attack.
Don’t even think about it!!!
My right hand pushed out violently, the erupting frost making the black flames change direction in mid-air, crashing straight towards the monster.
“Boom——!!”
The violent explosion knocked it to the ground, allowing me to land steadily on top of it.
Both hands pushed forward, palms pressed close to its dog face.
Die.
“Bang bang bang bang——!!”
Ice pillars mixed with frost burst out in a fan shape, completely freezing the monster inside.
Not done yet!!
Forcefully ignoring the intense pain in my body, I took a deep breath.
Black flames shot out from my palms.
“Boom——!!”
“Crack crack crack crack……”
The ice pillars were shattered by the black flames, the scattered crystal dust making the surrounding scenery look absolutely beautiful.
