Chapter 20: Abyssal Battle (2)
***
“Clang——” “Swoosh——” “Clang——” “Swoosh——”
The sound of metal scraping heavily across the ground grew closer and closer.
Leyn’s face was filled with despair, tears and mucus flowing into his mouth.
He knew those were the spine-chilling footsteps of the demon pursuing closely behind him.
Leyn had never imagined that something like this would happen one day.
He was just a village hooligan, spending his days idly without a proper job.
But he didn’t think there was anything wrong with that. After all, his father handled the big matters at home, and his mother took care of the small ones. He was an only child, the apple of his parents’ eyes. Naturally, he didn’t have to do anything, just enjoy life.
Leyn found such days very comfortable.
The villagers laughed at him behind his back, he knew that, but he never thought about changing.
Life was about enjoying oneself, why care about others’ opinions.
He had always held onto this mindset while idling away his days.
Until one day, a girl came to the village.
The girl’s name was Little Syl. As for her full name, Leyn never had the courage to ask.
But he swore, he had never seen such a beautiful girl in his life.
The moment Leyn saw her, the whole world suddenly bloomed into spring, as if awakening from a dream.
From that moment on, she was all he could think about.
The annoying Barry called her Sister Syl, so he followed suit. Sister Syl’s every smile and frown kept him awake night after day.
How could he strike up a conversation with this girl?
Leyn thought for a long time, then slapped his forehead: the old method, tease her.
So he led his group of followers, wherever Sister Syl went, they would follow, and say some flirtatious words at the right moment.
Every time he saw Sister Syl’s expression of embarrassed anger from his teasing, Leyn felt particularly accomplished.
Except for himself, no one else could make Sister Syl show such expressions.
Leyn thought somewhat proudly.
Later… later he got beaten up by his father.
“Pursuing a girl isn’t done with such lowly tactics, that will only make people dislike you. You must make the girl feel secure and at ease about being with you.”
Leyn took his father’s advice and decided to change himself.
He was about to turn 19, and had always lived life carelessly, never taking anything so seriously before.
On this day, Leyn had originally wanted to apologize to Sister Syl, and also… still wanted to find a chance to tease her again.
Although he knew it wasn’t right. But Sister Syl’s embarrassed look was really… intoxicating.
He just liked Sister Syl, liked seeing her make those expressions at him.
Leyn went to Grandma Claire’s house with a joyful heart, knocked for a long time but found no one was there.
Where had everyone gone…
While pondering this question, suddenly, disaster struck.
Then there were dead people everywhere.
A black sun and terrifying monsters appeared.
Everything that happened afterward was beyond his comprehension, like the horror stories about demons he had heard as a child.
Until now, Leyn had no sense of reality. He was just numb, as if in a dream, stumbling around hiding here and there, but ultimately was still discovered by the demon.
And now, he really couldn’t run anymore.
Maybe… he should just stop.
But stopping meant death.
Yet he was really too tired.
But if he stopped now, he probably would never see Sister Syl again.
But if he kept running, wouldn’t he die from exhaustion anyway?
Won’t someone save me…
Anyone, please save me! I haven’t lived enough yet, I still want to make Sister Syl my bride, I don’t want to die!!!
Leyn ran while crying, tears and mucus flowing into his mouth, filling it with a salty bitter taste.
At this moment.
“Whoosh——”
A fragrant breeze suddenly swept overhead, and the next moment, there was movement behind him.
“Zing——”
A crisp sound of a blade cutting through the air. Then, Leyn heard something fall to the ground.
The pursuing sound that seemed like a death knell went quiet.
“Huff——, huff——”
Leyn gradually stopped running.
His stamina had been exhausted to the limit, his lips cracked, face bloodless, legs shaking like a sieve.
Slowly turning his head.
He saw two grotesque black heads with twisted faces roll to his feet.
The heads had features similar to humans, but none were in the right position. The mouth was on the forehead, the nose on the side of the face, and two blood-red bulging eyes, one on the chin, one on the left ear.
The appearance was both comical and creepy.
“Ah——!!”
Leyn screamed in fright, stumbled backward two steps, and fell on his bottom.
But he saw the heads suddenly collapse, as if melted by high temperature, and along with two headless bodies lying not far away, turned into ashes scattering in the air.
Some specks of blue light fell on his body and face, feeling cold to the touch.
Leyn reached out his right hand and touched his cheek.
This feeling seemed to be… snow? Or frost?
“Whoosh——”
The ashes were scattered by a gentle breeze.
The next moment, the scene reflected in Leyn’s pupils became a sky full of snow like stars.
And hidden in the flying snow was a delicate white figure, with a streak of sky-reaching black hair.
Like a snow princess from a fairy tale, or a hunter lurking in the raging frost.
Who… is it?
At this moment, Leyn’s brain lost the ability to think.
Then the girl turned around, revealing that small face he had been thinking about day and night.
Leyn was stunned.
For a moment, he felt he was in an illusory dream.
Until the girl spoke to him.
“Leyn, go to village outskirts, meet up with, Elia.”
“…Little… ahem, Sister Syl?”
Leyn finally came to his senses and stammered.
“Mm, run quickly.”
Sister Syl’s face was still breathtakingly beautiful, but without her usual gentleness.
“You… what are you?”
“No time, go.”
“Clang——” “Swoosh——” “Bang——”
The nerve-grating footsteps sounded again, more demons moving quickly this way with steps that showed no regard for friend or foe.
Leyn’s pupils suddenly dilated.
“Sister Syl, be careful!”
As soon as the words fell, the girl before him moved.
“Pat.”
Jump, lean back, flip.
Bringing up an ice-blue mist and starlight, she spun twice in the air, came above the demons, and swung the Shandao in her hand.
“Hum——”
Heads fell in response.
Leyn barely supported himself up, watching the young girl he called sister so simply and casually kill a demon. After landing she quickly flashed away, dodging another demon’s sudden attack, while turning her Shandao’s edge, splitting it in two from bottom to top.
The entire process was unbelievably fast.
“【Abyssal Language】Kill.”
The demon’s low whisper sounded from the sky again.
Countless demons in the distance, hearing the command, immediately twisted their ugly bodies and surged toward Sister Syl’s direction.
The girl intentionally drew the battle away, her figure like a butterfly threading through flowers, constantly maneuvering between countless monsters. The Shandao in her hand was now wrapped in a thin layer of frost, held tightly at the very end of the handle, each swing would bring up thick freezing air, with a frighteningly large attack range. Those demons could hardly even get close, and the occasional one or two that slipped through would be hit by the girl’s left hand that constantly flashed with blue light, instantly frozen into ice sculptures, unable to cause any harm to the girl.
“So beautiful…”
At this moment, Leyn forgot his fear, forgot to run, he forgot everything, only appreciating this solo dance belonging to Sister Syl.
Gradually, more and more demons surged forward, and the girl’s petite figure was quickly submerged among them.
“Sister Syl!!!” Leyn stood up with all his might.
The next moment, bone-chilling cold wind came head-on.
“Crack crack crack crack——Boom!!!”
Countless huge and towering ice spikes suddenly exploded before his eyes, blasting out a sky full of ice crystal fragments, coating the surrounding 100 meters with a layer of frost. The air temperature suddenly dropped, Leyn curled up and hugged his arms, his teeth chattering from the cold.
For Leyn, this was the second massacre he had witnessed today. Only this time the objects of the massacre were changed to those terrifying demons.
Countless ice spikes of different sizes and thickness spread out from a central point, like a blooming gorgeous flower, freezing everything within dozens of meters.
Those demons who could easily reap lives just a second ago, making people unable to have any thought of resistance and could only flee in panic, were now either frozen in the ice spikes or impaled and hanging on the ice spikes, all motionless.
The girl stood barefoot on the highest ice spike, looking toward the black sun in the sky, the wind making her cloak flutter loudly.
Leyn’s mucus had frozen into strips hanging by his mouth.
His father was a passionate man who loved hearing stories about heroes. Influenced by him, Leyn also knew quite a few legendary human heroes.
Like the most faithful believer of the deity, Cardinal George of the Holy Church.
Like the Sword Saint Ryan who could cut rivers with one sword and possessed the heart of a lion.
Like the mysterious King of Deceptive Warfare, Lord Scalliger of Shanter Castle.
Like Carlos Gonzalez who could walk through the Abyssal mire, known as the Silver Flash.
And like Queen Elizabeth II of Isenbell, known as the Black Mandala.
And so on and so forth.
These heroes’ names were deeply etched in Leyn’s mind. In his youth, he had fantasized about how amazing these people would be, what kinds of things they could do.
However at this moment, Sister Syl in his eyes, that small figure, gradually overlapped with the shadows of those heroes in his fantasies.
“【Abyssal Language】Kill.”
“Swoosh swoosh——”
Two black blades shot through the air.
At the same moment, the ice spike under Sister Syl’s feet suddenly extended higher into the sky, the girl bent forward and charged, brushing past the incoming blades.
“Boom boom——!!”
“Crash——”
The blades crashed into the ice mountain, shattering along with the frozen demons.
Sharp fragments cut across Leyn’s cheeks, blood flowing down.
He couldn’t stay here any longer.
Leyn desperately beat his trembling legs, stumbling away toward the distance.
“Ya——!!!”
While behind him, the girl leaped high stepping on ice pillars, the great scythe in her hand flashing with cold light, colliding with the black sun.
