Chapter 99
Xie Qingling didn’t rush to answer Li Tiantian’s question. Lowering her head, her fingers unconsciously tapped on the Blood Oath Blade as if deep in thought.
Li Tiantian didn’t press her.
Following Xie Qingling’s movement, Li Tiantian’s gaze was drawn to the pair of pure white short blades, particularly the strikingly vivid azure at the hilt. “Such beautiful blades,” Li Tiantian asked, “did you exchange for these from the headquarters’ Weaponry?”
“Hmm?” Xie Qingling shook her head. “No, the department head gave them to me.”
Li Tiantian couldn’t tear her eyes away from the Blood Oath Blade.
Not only was the blade embedded with a deep azure mysterious stone of unknown purpose, but it also bore engraved spells. Tools engraved with curse techniques typically possess additional special effects beyond their inherent characteristics, making curse weapons highly sought after in the Weaponry. They usually get exchanged shortly after appearing.
Unfortunately, Curse Casters are a rare profession, so tools with engraved spells are scarce.
Li Tiantian was extremely envious: “Having your department head sure saves a lot of points.”
“What are points used for?”
“They’re very useful,” Li Tiantian explained. “With enough points, you can exchange for any item you fancy from the headquarters’ Weaponry, including but not limited to weapons. Although some mystical items can be requisitioned for free, resources are limited while special incidents occur frequently across regions. The application process for requisitions is always cumbersome.”
Xie Qingling immediately understood. Previously, when their department applied for personnel or mystical items from headquarters, it always took at least two or three days to get approved the process was indeed slow.
While department members could select tools from the preparation room during missions, those specialized weapons like the gun Xie Qingling preferred though effective against Ghouls, had limited power. They became less useful when facing deities or the Eleven Sides.
A well-suited weapon could transcend the distinctions between deities, Ghouls, and humans, making its wielder unstoppable.
Xie Qingling realized how valuable Ling Fang was always replenishing supplies promptly and crafting tools himself, while also being cost-effective…
The department head was truly wonderful.
“Thank you for telling me this, Tiantian,” Xie Qingling said. “I haven’t grown enough to face a city with danger level five. The department head must have his reasons for not mentioning it.”
“I’m still young,” Xie Qingling added with a smile.
Li Tiantian looked rather surprised. As the top ranker on the New Talent Ranking, she’d never underestimated Xie Qingling. Their first meeting hadn’t given her the impression Xie Qingling was arrogant, but she never expected her to be so humble in private.
Since Xie Qingling showed no interest in learning more or going, Li Tiantian decided not to push further, avoiding unnecessary meddling.
Their conversation ended abruptly, as if nothing had happened.
Two days later, when Xie Qingling stepped out of the rest room, she found the office floor completely transformed.
Silver-white light currents danced across the gray-black marble floor, darting about like electrical sparks.
Like blood vessels buried within the body, hidden beneath layers of skin and muscle, now laid bare before everyone.
Xie Qingling stepped onto it, her heart pounding with alarm, almost thinking the office had once again fallen prey to some formidable ambush. But upon second thought, with so many people residing here, even if the Eleven Sides wanted to infiltrate silently, the difficulty would be exceedingly high.
She steadied her mind.
By then, others from adjacent rooms had gradually peeked out, their expressions shifting to astonishment at the sight of the shimmering silver patterns on the floor. The intern, however, was so flustered that they froze outright, embodying the shock and disorientation of waking up to find their home invaded.
Li Tiantian stared at the faintly visible silver motifs on the floor and murmured, “Headquarters assembly order…”
Headquarters assembly order?
Before Xie Qingling could ask, Ling Fang’s voice came through her earpiece: “All department members, assemble in the main hall for a meeting.”
Xie Qingling and the others promptly hurried downstairs.
In the main hall’s conference area, Ling Fang was already seated at the head of the table, awaiting their arrival.
Everyone took their seats accordingly. After about five minutes, Ye Anran, Dai Xingyu, and Shen Huaizhou also arrived.
The latecomers likewise noticed the anomaly in the office the sudden emergence of silver light on the floor, its flowing radiance resembling blooming flowers, tracing patterns that seemed alien to this world.
It looked like the traces of some kind of array.
But wasn’t the office supposed to be the safest place in Future City? When had such an intricate and vast array been inscribed here?
Ling Fang’s expression was grim, his mood visibly low. The others dared not speak, waiting for him to break the silence.
“Headquarters assembly order,” Ling Fang stated. “This is the headquarters assembly order. The Old Royal City is summoning personnel, likely requiring reinforcements.”
His words dropped like a thunderclap.
The seasoned members remained composed, each harboring their own thoughts but showing no outward reaction. Even Xie Qingling, who usually asked the most questions, stayed silent and waited.
The newcomer Lu Ying couldn’t contain her curiosity and asked, “Minister, could there be a mistake? The headquarters is guarded by five Innate Spirits blessed by the Primordial Gods. Usually, it’s the headquarters supporting regional cities, not… not the headquarters needing support.”
Lu Ying’s voice trailed off, her face gradually paling.
The headquarters was teeming with talent, gathering the most elite Spirit Users, serving as the strongest trump card.
If even the headquarters required reinforcements, how severe must the situation be?
She didn’t dare to imagine further and fell silent.
Ling Fang said, “The specific details are still unclear, but the teleportation array hasn’t been activated for many years. I’ve received orders to bring key personnel from each city to the Old Royal City.”
“Today’s brief meeting is mainly to delegate departmental affairs during my absence.”
Time was pressing. Without further explanation, Ling Fang turned his gaze to Li Tiantian and issued the command: “I will take Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou away from Future City for a period. During my absence, Li Tiantian will act as interim minister. You are to follow her directives and cooperate with her work.”
Given Li Tiantian’s capabilities, handling the daily affairs of Future City should be well within her reach.
Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu were still too young, needing more experience; they weren’t steady or thorough enough yet.
“Understood!” the group responded resoundingly.
“You, Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu,” Ling Fang continued, “as senior members of Future City’s Special Incident Handling Department, are more familiar with the city’s situation. Do your utmost to help Li Tiantian quickly adapt to all work procedures.”
Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu replied in unison: “Received!”
“As for you four interns,” Ling Fang produced four documents, “your performance during the probation period has been excellent. I’ve submitted your regularization applications to the Administration Department head. She will take over the assessment baton to conduct your final evaluation. If you pass, you’ll become full-time staff.”
“Received!”
After arranging everyone’s assignments, Ling Fang turned his gaze to Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou, stating gravely: “You two, come with me.”
Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou stood up, exchanged a glance, then followed Ling Fang to the second-floor preparation room.
“Pack your belongings and bring all your items. We depart in five minutes,” Ling Fang issued the brief command.
“Received!”
The headquarters summons was indeed abrupt, but fortunately they didn’t have much luggage to prepare.
Xie Qingling selected several sets of clothes, packed them into an ordinary suitcase, then placed all her portable mystical items into the silver case. With her preparations complete, she awaited departure.
Ling Fang also picked up his case. Seeing both were ready, he hurried up to the third floor, the two following silently behind.
They arrived at the place housing the Spirit Shrine.
This area was perpetually veiled in incense smoke, constantly filled with the scent of Incense Offerings.
The Spirits within the Shrine displayed various countenances – some compassionate, some wrathful – each quietly awaiting Devotees’ offerings.
Ling Fang’s gaze fell upon the wall behind the Shrine. Pressing a hidden latch behind the Shrine, the wall transformed into a door, slowly opening its long-sealed maw.
Despite working here so long, Xie Qingling never knew there was another realm hidden within. It seemed their department had contingency plans after all, she thought.
Ling Fang entered the narrow room first.
After Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou followed inside, the door closed again, revealing four confined walls in the cramped space, reminiscent of an elevator.
All flowing light from the floor gathered within this space, coalescing into drifting stars before their eyes. The tiny room resembled a condensed galaxy of dazzling light points.
The sensation underfoot became unreal, as if stepping on solid ground yet simultaneously treading clouds. Matter transformed beyond recognition amid the shifting brightness and darkness.
Then, the voice in her mind spoke:
【Heaven and earth mysterious yellow, universe primordial chaos. Sun and moon wax and wane, constellations arrayed in order. The Earth Mansion Star Lord, who governs celestial arrangements, bestows blessings upon the mortal realm. The Devotee receives His elusive earth traversal technique, utilizing stars and cosmos to deploy this teleportation array capable of crossing mountains and seas.】
As the words faded, Xie Qingling gained some understanding of this array’s function.
Xie Qingling asked, “Minister, will we arrive directly at the Old Royal City?”
“Mm. The teleportation array was set up in advance by headquarters, with the Old Royal City as the center and Anchor Points established outward to various cities. When needed, point-to-point teleportation can be achieved between specific cities. We generally call it ‘taking the elevator’.”
Taking the elevator quite an apt description.
The light before their eyes gradually faded, indicating the array was nearly finished teleporting them.
From Future City to the Old Royal City, it had taken just over a minute.
So fast.
Even faster than taking a plane.
Completely disregarding objective conditions, utterly unreasonable.
Xie Qingling added, “If this array is so convenient, why isn’t it activated more often?”
“In that case, we’d soon be collecting the body of the array master.”
“…Oh.”
There are no perpetual motion machines in this world, just as there are no perpetual motion people, nor perpetual motion Spirit Users.
A touch of science within the mystical quite logical.
By now, the light had completely dissipated, and their surroundings returned to normal. Four plain walls enclosed the three of them, like a cramped elevator.
If not for Ling Fang’s explanation, they might have thought nothing had happened at all.
“We’re here,” Ling Fang said. “Let’s go out.”
Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou exchanged a glance before following behind Ling Fang as they stepped out of that confined space.
This was the Old Royal City the location of headquarters.
