Chapter 97

The new members had just arrived in Future City and hadn’t had time to settle their living arrangements yet, so Ling Fang temporarily housed them in the second-floor lounge.

The usually quiet office instantly became lively, and Xie Qingling suddenly gained five new roommates.

Among the five newcomers, Li Tiantian was already a seasoned veteran. Though she had extensive experience dealing with ghouls, she was still new to Future City and unfamiliar with many marked locations, requiring guidance from an experienced member.

Naturally, Ling Fang became her designated mentor.

The remaining four interns were divided among Xie Qingling’s team, with each member taking one under their wing a perfect match.

Xie Qingling was assigned Zhao Qiming, an Awakened who hadn’t yet received the Primordial God’s Bestowment.

This was Zhao Qiming’s own choice.

Ever since hearing Xie Qingling’s extraordinary self-introduction, Zhao Qiming’s eyes sparkled with admiration whenever he looked at her, his face radiating worship. When Ling Fang announced that each intern should choose a senior to follow, Zhao Qiming eagerly positioned himself beside Xie Qingling and declared, “I’ll follow Sister Qingling.”

All eyes turned to him.

Unfazed, Zhao Qiming proudly stated, “If I stick close to Sister Qingling, I might absorb some of her divine aura and receive the Primordial God’s Bestowment too!”

Sister Qingling… What blatant flattery.

Who’s older here anyway!

Dai Xingyu corrected him, “Wait, that’s not right. I’ve seen your files Xie Qingling is younger than you.”

“So what?” Zhao Qiming retorted. “We don’t measure seniority by age. Sister Qingling joined before me; she’s my senior. Calling her ‘sister’ is perfectly reasonable.”

Dai Xingyu fell silent at that.

Lu Ying, who had also considered choosing Xie Qingling, snorted lightly with a hint of displeasure. “You’ve got some nerve…”

Her gaze swept over Shen Huaizhou, hesitated briefly, but ultimately settled on Dai Xingyu, who appeared the most harmless and approachable.

Yao Yuxue told Yao Qiang, “Little brother, you choose first.”

Yao Qiang didn’t want to pick Shen Huaizhou either the aloof cross-dresser with strange hobbies and an unapproachable expression. But…

His sister probably felt the same.

If that was the case, he’d just have to endure the hardship himself.

With tears in his eyes, Yao Qiang chose Shen Huaizhou.

Yao Yuxue paired up with Ye Anran instead.

While Ling Fang took Li Tiantian to familiarize her with office archives, the remaining eight split into teams to carry out missions.

Xie Qingling’s patrol assignment for the day was the Water Conservancy Bureau.

Recent appearances of Scapegoat Water Ghosts in Future City prompted Ling Fang to order thorough patrols of all rivers and reservoirs to prevent incidents.

On the way, Zhao Qiming asked, “Sister Qingling, how did you become a full member? I checked the department files yesterday and saw you were promoted before your three-month probation ended. Could you share some tips?”

How did she become a full member?

Could she say it was because her performance was too outstanding, leading to an early promotion?

After thinking about the written self-criticisms she’d composed, Xie Qingling decided it would be better not to voice such thoughts aloud, lest she break character later and make things awkward.

Xie Qingling then said, “Becoming a full member is simple. You need to demonstrate your ability, stance, and awareness to us.”

Zhao Qiming, who had been listening behind her, kept pondering her words.

He asked, “Ability and stance are easy to understand. Once I receive the Bestowment, I’ll possess Mystical Power. As for stance, of course I stand with the department. But what about awareness? What does that mean?”

Xie Qingling smiled mysteriously. “That’s exam content – no comment.”

Zhao Qiming: “…”

Not even a single hint?

A faint look of disappointment appeared on Zhao Qiming’s face. When the motorcycle stopped at the Water Conservancy Bureau entrance, he followed Xie Qingling inside.

Water Conservancy Bureau staff rarely saw people from the Special Events Handling Department. They only knew inspectors were coming today, but weren’t clear about what exactly was being inspected. After spending some time at the entrance going through security checks, Xie Qingling finally entered the bureau.

Zhao Qiming asked, “Has the Water Conservancy Bureau been marked?”

As someone sent from headquarters, Zhao Qiming had basic understanding of the department’s procedures for handling Special Events, unlike when Xie Qingling was new and completely unfamiliar with matters of this mysterious world.

“No, and Special Events basically never occur here. The Water Conservancy Bureau housed a tablet dedicated to Yu the Great, which could intimidate ordinary Goblins and Monsters, preventing them from approaching.

Today’s patrol location was chosen with consideration for the intern.

“Then why…”

“Of course, as a precaution.”

Xie Qingling walked briskly. “Follow me.”

“Alright.”

The first day’s work proceeded smoothly.

After spending more time with Zhao Qiming, Xie Qingling discovered he was utterly shameless, somewhat similar to that secretly showy Shen Huaizhou – both were completely focused on becoming stronger and would discard all dignity to achieve it.

No, actually Shen Huaizhou still maintained some idol image, but Zhao Qiming kept calling the younger Xie Qingling “sister” without any hesitation. Xie Qingling could only say he had exceptional talent for having skin thicker than city walls.

Future City remained quiet for several consecutive days, with department members encountering no Singularity Events.

After the Eleventh Citadel’s plan to strip Hariti Goddess of her Divinity and guide Her descent into darkness failed, they seemed to have abandoned Future City as a stronghold, temporarily showing no activity.

Not only were there no sightings of Eleventh Citadel members, but even the Little ghosts that used to appear unexpectedly had vanished.

It appeared Future City had returned to being that peaceful city where Special Events rarely occurred throughout the year.

The personnel sent from headquarters greatly alleviated staffing pressures, making work much more leisurely for Future City’s Special Events Handling Department staff.

The weather grew increasingly colder.

Autumn winds whistled through the streets, with leaves on roadside trees beginning to show yellowing signs. A few leaves had already fallen eagerly.

This signaled the impending arrival of winter, and the warm afternoon sunlight had become a scarce resource. Just as Xie Qingling was basking in the golden rays, a call for help from a department member came through her earphones.

“Minister? We’ve encountered a Fierce Ghost who died in a car accident and refuses to leave the roadway. It’s causing accidents and creating quite a disturbance, though fortunately there have been no casualties so far.” It was Dai Xingyu.

Ling Fang thought for a moment and said, “Your location is closer to Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou. I’ll have them both come support you. From now on, follow Xie Qingling’s commands.”

Such malevolent spirits were often formed from lingering resentment after death. Though they harbored intentions to harm people, their power remained limited since they hadn’t been ghosts for long. There was no need to deploy the entire department either Xie Qingling or Shen Huaizhou alone would be sufficient to handle it.

“Received.”

Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou acknowledged the order.

Xie Qingling then turned her motorcycle around, bringing Zhao Qiming along to the coordinates provided by Dai Xingyu.

“All members hold your positions,” Xie Qingling instructed the team. “First use the Killing Field to trap the Fierce Ghost. Avoid direct confrontation if possible prioritize your safety. Wait until other team members are in position before engaging to eliminate it.”

The motorcycle raced ahead. When Xie Qingling hurriedly arrived at the coordinates given by Dai Xingyu, she found the battle had already concluded.

Lu Ying and Yao Qiang one wielding a blade, the other a gun were relentlessly attacking the highway Fierce Ghost as it lay wailing on the ground.

Xie Qingling raised an eyebrow, glanced at Shen Huaizhou standing nearby with crossed arms, and then at Dai Xingyu’s helpless, near-tearful expression. “It’s over?” she asked.

Dai Xingyu nodded.

“Why didn’t you stop them?”

Dai Xingyu replied, “I… I couldn’t stop them.”

Xie Qingling turned her gaze to Shen Huaizhou.

Shen Huaizhou arched an eyebrow, arms still folded. “Why should I stop them? It’s normal for newcomers to make mistakes, isn’t it?”

Xie Qingling: “…”

Though Zhao Qiming didn’t know what had happened, his intuition told him it was wiser to stay silent at this moment.

“You took too long to get here,” Lu Ying said, having already finished off the Fierce Ghost. She rested the blood-stained large blade on her shoulder, radiating the satisfaction and triumph of victory.

That was the Remaining Might Blade, named Karma Cutter. Since Lu Ying also used a blade, it had been assigned to her.

Xie Qingling approached with a smile. She observed Yao Qiang’s mix of shyness and pride, then Lu Ying’s unbridled confidence, and finally the slain Fierce Ghost. She nodded slowly. “Well done. You both performed excellently and showed strong capability.”

Lu Ying wore a “of course” expression, while Yao Qiang smiled sheepishly.

Zhao Qiming, following behind Xie Qingling, felt a twinge of envy. Why hadn’t he encountered this Fierce Ghost? Perhaps he could have demonstrated his abilities, stance, and determination too.

“Go back and write a self-criticism report, and copy the Work Guidelines five times,” Xie Qingling said, still smiling.

Instantly, Yao Qiang’s pride vanished, Lu Ying’s arrogance disappeared, and Zhao Qiming’s envy faded away.

Lu Ying asked in disbelief, “Why?! We defeated the Fierce Ghost! Shouldn’t we be rewarded for our merits? Why do we have to write self-criticism?!”
“Right? It’s time to reward merits, so I’ve already praised you just now.” Xie Qingling’s expression turned stern. “But… who allowed you to act without authorization? Didn’t you hear my orders?”

“But…” Lu Ying said unwillingly, “But it was just one Fierce Ghost. Did we really need to be so cautious?”

“Sometimes, a single Fierce Ghost can take your life. In this world, never underestimate any opponent. Not everyone can escape death by luck.”

After throwing out these words, Xie Qingling left.

Lu Ying muttered a few words, clearly still somewhat unconvinced.

Xie Qingling paused her steps, turned back to look at Lu Ying, and said, “If you’re not convinced, you can complain to the minister about me.” But you’d better take what I said to heart.” With that, she started her Motorcycle.

Watching her departing figure, Dai Xingyu sighed, “So scary. Just now she seemed like she was possessed by the minister…”

Shen Huaizhou remained silent and left as well.

Only Lu Ying and Yao Qiang were left looking at each other, wanting to cry but having no tears.

After thinking it over, they still felt very unconvinced.

That evening, Lu Ying indeed went to complain to Ling Fang.

Lu Ying recounted the day’s events to Ling Fang, accusing Xie Qingling of abusing her authority and bullying newcomers.

After listening, Ling Fang specifically sought confirmation from Xie Qingling: “Is everything Lu Ying said true?”

“Completely true.”

Ling Fang’s expression became very complicated.

“Alright, I understand the situation,” Ling Fang said. “Disobeying commands, acting without authorization. Lu Ying, Yao Qiang – double the word count for your self-criticism reports, and copy the Work Guidelines ten times.”

Lu Ying: “???”

She suspected her ears were playing tricks on her.
