Chapter 94

The early autumn wind felt like a knife cutting into the flesh.

Ye Anran had already pushed her motorcycle to its maximum speed, yet she wished she had grown wings to fly faster, faster, faster.

Lao Yu was waiting for her.

She had to make it in time.

Finally, racing back to the office like a whirlwind, Ye Anran spotted Xie Qingling’s motorcycle lying sideways on the ground at first glance. Her hand froze as she parked, and her entire face changed color.

Lifting her gaze, she saw murky blood slowly trickling down the steps, mingling with the puddles.

Drip, drip, drip… gradually converging into a stream, then seeping through the cracks in the pavement into the drains.

“Lao Yu!!” Ye Anran threw off her helmet and sprinted back into the office.

The smell of blood was overwhelming.

The courtyard was a scene of devastation.

So many scattered limbs littered the ground.

Ye Anran stood stunned, her legs trembling uncontrollably, but she didn’t dare waste a single second. Her eyes, dazed yet frantic, scanned the area and finally locked onto the two figures in the center of the courtyard one lying down, the other kneeling.

The one lying was covered in blood and grime; the one kneeling was soaked in mud and water.

Xie Qingling held Yu Wei’s body, cradling the pink urn in her hands, her gaze distant as if lost in thought or simply numb.

Her face was clean, as if she had been crying, or perhaps not.

Ye Anran’s vision was too blurred to discern her emotions, and she no longer cared to try.

Her eyes were only for Yu Wei now. She rushed over quickly.

“Lao Yu!!”

“How could this be? I’m too late… I…”

Ye Anran broke into loud, wailing sobs, her words becoming incoherent.

“Lao Yu, Lao Yu, open your eyes and look at me. Let me heal you. I’ll make you better.” Ye Anran continuously cast her Spring Return Technique on Yu Wei.

She pulled out her needle kit, grabbed a handful of silver needles, and covered every possible acupuncture point on Yu Wei’s body.

When she ran out of silver needles, she used black ones.

She kept inserting needles, channeling the energy of the Godly Blessing, desperate to recreate the miracle of life.

But this time, neither the Midnight-Noon Ebb-Flow Needle nor the Yin-Yang Exterior-Interior Needle elicited any response.

“Waaah… Lao Yu!” Ye Anran collapsed to the ground, weeping in self-reproach and sorrow, her shoulders shaking with each sob.

At that moment, Xie Qingling finally moved.

She carefully collected the needles Ye Anran had inserted into Yu Wei, one by one, and returned them to her needle kit.

“Senior Anran, use the elixir on Brother Yu,” Xie Qingling said.

The elixir right, they needed to retrieve the Secret Elixir.

Ye Anran’s crying paused briefly as she sniffled and pulled a tube of white medicine from the silver case.

It took several attempts before she managed to align the syringe with the bottle cap and draw the solvent.

But when she picked up Yu Wei’s hand to inject the solvent into his vein, she inadvertently noticed his broken index finger. Her hand trembled, and the syringe missed its mark.

Taking a deep breath, Ye Anran tried again, but she couldn’t successfully administer the injection.

Frustrated, she began sobbing again.

“Let me do it.”

Xie Qingling took the syringe from her hand, lifted Yu Wei’s arm with one hand, and slowly injected the white solvent into his bloodstream.

Her hand didn’t tremble, succeeding in the injection on the first attempt.

Ye Anran looked at her face but only saw her lowered brows and downcast eyes, her expression calm and composed, revealing no emotion whatsoever.

Ye Anran’s lips parted slightly, momentarily unsure of what to say.

She thought, as a senior employee, she was really incompetent.

She wished she could be like Xie Qingling – always able to handle any problem with calm composure, as if nothing could overwhelm her.

But…

It hurt so much.

Her heart ached as if being squeezed by a hand.

Didn’t she feel any pain? Ye Anran wondered.

After the injection was complete, the white solvent flowed slowly through Yu Wei’s stagnant blood vessels. The white liquid shimmering with silver specks ignored the barriers of flesh and skin, its light transmitting through to reach Xie Qingling’s eyes.

As the solvent moved inch by inch, silver-white lines were drawn throughout Yu Wei’s body. These lines used blood vessels as channels and the solvent as flowing water, carrying along the Spirit Yu Wei had refined over the years as they advanced forward, as if cleansing trenches.

When these silver-white fluids ceased flowing, the Spirit had completely dissolved.

Xie Qingling waited patiently.

By now, Ye Anran had calmed down considerably.

She sniffed her reddened nose, wiped the tears from her face, and tried to direct Xie Qingling’s actions in a clear voice: “Use another clean syringe to extract the Secret Elixir.”

Xie Qingling followed her instructions.

The syringe needle must have been specially made. When extracting the Spirit from Yu Wei’s body, the needle served as a natural filter. The white Secret Elixir shimmering with silver specks rushed eagerly into the syringe, while the other blood components remained motionless.

Before long, Xie Qingling had extracted a full syringe of Secret Elixir.

The amount of solvent injected into Yu Wei’s body was only a small tube, but the extracted Secret Elixir was five to six times that volume.

The additional portion was the dissolved Spirit.

Holding up the syringe and examining it, Xie Qingling murmured: “This tube could be divided into at least five portions of Secret Elixir, maybe even six. Brother Yu was truly an outstanding warrior.”

Ye Anran also nodded and said: “Normally, we can only extract three portions – that’s the average. Being able to extract five or six portions shows that Lao Yu… that Lao Yu had refined a substantial amount of Spirit during his lifetime.”

Ye Anran’s nose and eyes reddened again, finding it difficult to continue speaking.

Xie Qingling placed the Secret Elixir back into the silver case, awaiting disposal.

Then she tapped her earpiece and said: “Minister, notify the Logistics Department to enter. The battle has ended.”

“Do you need support on your end?”

“Alright, then let’s wrap up. We’ll wait for you at the office.”

What Ling Fang said on the other end, Ye Anran couldn’t make out clearly.

She watched as if in a dream while Xie Qingling methodically handled various tasks – first notifying Ling Fang, then going to collect Hariti Goddess’s Shrine, cleaning off the bloodstains covering it.

As for herself, she sat helplessly beside Yu Wei’s corpse like a child, feeling lost and powerless.

Were it not for the shattered traces in the courtyard, the corpse of Yu Wei lying prone, and the dismembered limbs scattered across the ground, it would seem as though nothing had happened here.

Ye Anran stared at Xie Qingling’s back and murmured, “Xie Qingling, aren’t you sad at all?”

Ye Anran’s voice was hoarse from crying.

Xie Qingling’s busy figure paused briefly. Without turning around, she replied, “I am sad.”

“But killing just one Tang Tian isn’t enough.”

“If you ask me what I want to do most right now,” Xie Qingling halted her movements and said, “it would be to slaughter everyone in The Eleventh Citadel, to avenge Brother Yu!”

Having spoken, she returned to her tasks alone.

She took a broom and swept the bloodstains in the courtyard into one spot, gathering them together. This was to prevent any passersby from accidentally catching a glimpse and attracting unnecessary trouble.

Ye Anran opened her mouth to speak, but in the end, all her words were swallowed back. Then she stood up and joined Xie Qingling in cleaning the courtyard, picking up the military knife and broadsword that Yu Wei had dropped on the ground.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, Ye Anran turned her back sharply, tears streaming down her face once more.

A heavy silence spread quietly.

After an unknown length of time, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed outside the office entrance.

Thinking it was Ling Fang and the others returning, Xie Qingling looked up, only to see Yang Liuqing leading the Logistics Department personnel as they entered.

The Logistics Department temporarily blocked off the street outside the office. Then, a group of people filed into the courtyard in an orderly manner.

First, they carried away Yu Wei’s body on a stretcher. After that, they collected the dismembered body parts from the courtyard into several plastic bags, sealing each one carefully.

Everyone carried out their duties in silence, slow but practiced and systematic.

Yang Liuqing gazed at the blood-soaked ground and unconsciously pulled out a pack of cigarettes. She shook one loose, placed it between her lips, and lit it.

She exhaled clouds of smoke, the haze swirling around her.

“Time to prepare the bodies again…” The gray smoke obscured the expression on Yang Liuqing’s face.

Xie Qingling looked at her and asked, “Minister Yang, how will you handle Brother Yu’s body? Will you… burn it?”

Shen Huaizhou had said that corpses undergoing Corpse Transformation were usually doused with gasoline and burned to ashes.

Before his death, Yu Wei had been infected with the Cadaveric Poison from the zombies, and black hair had grown on his corpse. Would he too be burned to nothing? If so, would there be no ashes left behind?

Yang Liuqing flicked the ash from her cigarette and said, “It won’t come to that. For fallen warriors, unless absolutely necessary, we always try to let the heroic souls rest in peace.”

“We’ll first place Lao Yu’s body in a secure location to prevent Corpse Transformation. Then we’ll invite some specialists to perform rites to purify the Cadaveric Poison. After that… we’ll notify the family to claim the body and hold a funeral.”

Pausing, Yang Liuqing let out a sound halfway between a sob and a laugh. She looked up at the sky and said bitterly, “Oh, I almost forgot Lao Yu has no family left.”

“His parents have passed away, and his daughter is dead. There’s still… a wife… no, ex-wife. Not sure if she’s willing to come claim him. If we can’t find anyone, we’ll send Lao Yu on his final journey ourselves.”

As he spoke, Yang Liuqing finished one cigarette and shook out another to light, simultaneously offering one to Xie Qingling: “Want one?”

“Oh, I forgot again you don’t smoke.” Yang Liuqing started to put the cigarette away.

Unexpectedly, Xie Qingling reached out and took one. “I’ll give it a try.”

Imitating Yang Liuqing’s posture, Xie Qingling clumsily held the cigarette between her fingers and took a deep drag, only to choke and cough violently.

The smoke brought tears to her eyes, her throat burning cold and sharp with pain.

Tears streaming down her face, Xie Qingling flung the cigarette to the ground. The faint ember hit the blood-soaked earth and quickly extinguished, not a single spark remaining.

“I’m done with this,” Xie Qingling coughed out. “I’ll never touch one again in my life.”

Yang Liuqing laughed heartily and put away the cigarette pack.

Ye Anran watched them quietly from the side, thinking to herself that these two were a pair of lunatics who’d found each other.

Three days after the Logistics Department carried away Yu Wei’s body.

The department had requested a Taoist from headquarters capable of purifying Cadaveric Poison to perform rituals. According to calculations, he was just about to arrive in Future City.

Unexpectedly, before the Taoist arrived, a woman in mourning clothes appeared at the office entrance first.
