Chapter 90

“Chief, don’t worry.” Yu Wei slowly drew his blade. “Although Tang Tian has become a Spirit User, all his skills were taught by me. A petty scoundrel like him is no match for me.”

“Tell Anran to hold on. Once I handle things here, I’ll reinforce her immediately.”

As his words faded, the headset transmitted the sharp whistle of cutting windTang Tian and Yu Wei had engaged in combat.

“Lao Yu? Lao Yu!” Ling Fang shouted urgently twice, but no response came through the headset.

Ling Fang nearly ground his molars to dust.

Drawing a pistol, he shot down an approaching Ghoul while simultaneously contacting the Logistics Department.

“Yang Liuqing,” Ling Fang said once the call connected. “We’ve encountered major trouble. Bring your team for backup. Lao Yu is holding the office but has run into people from The Eleventh Citadel. Our entire department is pinned down by Ghouls and can’t break free.”

Yang Liuqing asked, “Should I reinforce the office?”

“No.” Ling Fang refused. “Your team would only be walking to their deaths. Support Ye Anran instead. Help her disengage first, then reinforce Lao Yu.”

“Understood.”

Yang Liuqing quickly mobilized his team.

Though the Logistics Department handled miscellaneous tasks, its members’ combat capabilities were qualitatively inferior to those of the actual operations team. They typically only stood in for shifts or used Technology Research and Development Department tools to capture minor spirits.

In real combat, they’d be mere cannon fodder.

Ordinarily, the Logistics Department would only be deployed as a last resort.

And now, that desperate hour seemed to be approaching.

Although personnel transfers approved by headquarters had been processed, new members couldn’t be deployed so quickly.

After Future City’s threat level was raised to three, the existing department members were already struggling to hold the line.

Ling Fang hoped the situation wasn’t as dire as he feared. Lao Yu had to hold on.

Watching the gathering Ghouls before him, Ling Fang wore a look of grim determination. One hand operated a crossbow while the other drew a blademaintaining ranged attacks while preparing for close-quarters defense.

That day, Future City’s sky remained overcast after the morning rain, still shrouded in drizzle.

The air carried a stifling, storm-laden heat, faintly tinged with the scent of blood that circulated endlessly in the muggy atmosphere.

10:00 AM.

All field agents of the Special Events Handling Department had left the office, leaving only Yu Wei behind.

He was a rough-and-tumble man who preferred charging into battle outdoors over pushing paperwork.

Having finally processed the accumulated documents, Yu Wei breathed a sigh of relief.

The remaining time was now his own.

Standing watch during shifts was tedious with nothing to do.

Sitting on the sofa, Yu Wei recalled what Xie Qingling had said to him before leaving.

He also remembered the contact still saved as “Wife” in his phone.

But Yu Wei didn’t take out his phone.

His decision at divorce to never disturb her again wouldn’t change because of Xie Qingling’s well-meaning advice. Once Yu Wei resolved on something, he never wavered or regretted it.

Some paths, once taken, should never be looked back upon.

He took out a velvet cloth and slowly wiped his broadsword as he maintained it.

Just as he was focused on the task, he suddenly heard the sound of heavy footsteps.

It wasn’t Xie Qingling, nor was it Ye Anranthis wasn’t the sound of a woman’s footsteps.

But it wasn’t Dai Xingyu either; Dai Xingyu walked with a light and brisk step. And it certainly wasn’t Shen Huaizhou or Ling Fangthose two walked almost silently, with clean, decisive strides, never deliberately stomping on the ground to make noise as if trying to intimidate someone.

Yu Wei paused his sword-wiping, grabbed his blade, and immediately rushed out of the office.

The newcomer was tall and burly, wearing a black short-sleeved shirt with a hood.

He had a tattooed arm, was blind in one eye, and wore a black eyepatch.

Carrying a cloth bag, he strode boldly into the office as if he owned the place, his demeanor completely at ease.

“Tang Tian!” The veins on Yu Wei’s temples bulged instantly. “How dare you show your face here?”

“Haha, Master.” Tang Tian casually tossed the cloth bag aside and kicked it away with his foot.

He spread his arms wide and walked toward Yu Wei, laughing arrogantly. “Long time no see, Master. Did you miss me?”

Miss himmiss him dead!

Remembering his fallen comrades, Yu Wei’s eyes turned bloodshot with rage. He wished he could cut him down right then and there.

Just then.

His earpiece buzzed.

“Lao Yu. We’ve encountered spirits outside. I’m sending someone from the Logistics Department to cover for you. Get out here immediately and support Ye Anran.”

“I’m afraid that’s not possible, Chief.”

Yu Wei gripped the hilt of his sword, his back slightly arched, poised and ready to attack.

“What’s going on?”

“It’s Tang Tian.”

“I’m in the office. I’ve run into Tang Tianhe’s come looking for me.”

“He’s come to me so I can clean up the mess.” Murderous intent flared in Yu Wei’s eyes. He stopped talking to Ling Fang, his face darkening as he raised his sword and roared, “Ya!”

He leaped into the air, both hands gripping the hilt, raising the broadsword high before bringing it down in a fierce slash toward Tang Tian.

This strike carried the force of a collapsing mountainimmense power and blinding speed whipping up a howling wind. Yu Wei’s assault was direct and overwhelming, purely brute strength with no flashy techniques, relying entirely on raw power to crush his opponent head-on.

Years of diligent training, years of mourning and regret for the old chief, and all his hatred for Tang Tian were condensed into this simple, straightforward blow, transforming into an earth-shattering momentum aimed at cleaving Tang Tian in two with a single strike!

Tang Tian planted his feet firmly, not only refusing to flee but instead meeting the attack bare-handed, using his arm to block.

Despite being mere flesh and blood, when his arm met Yu Wei’s blade, it produced a sharp “clang,” as if two hard metal objects had collided.

Yu Wei frowned, gradually increasing the pressure. Tang Tian’s knees buckled forward, nearly sending him to the ground.

But in the end, Tang Tian steadied himself. He lifted his head, his one-eyed face grinning up at Yu Wei, a hollow, mocking smile on his lips. “Master, your strength… you’ve gotten old.”

Yu Wei’s expression remained unchanged. Years of combat had honed his discipline; he wouldn’t be distracted or emotionally swayed by his opponent’s taunts. Seeing that he couldn’t injure him, he withdrew his blade, shifting from a slash to an upward thrust, angling it diagonally from Tang Tian’s side.

The blade struck Tang Tian squarely in the chest, carving a deep gash and sending him stumbling backward from the immense force.

His clothing tore open, revealing a bleeding wound across his flesh. By all reasoning, a full-force strike from an Acquired Spirit should have cleaved Tang Tian in two, yet he remained standing.

Gazing at the blood welling from his chest, Tang Tian showed no panic. Instead, his single remaining eye blazed with frenzied excitement as he stared at the crimson flow, the iris itself flushing scarlet. He cupped his hands beneath the bleeding wound, bringing them to his lips to frantically lick and suck the blood, as though savoring a rare delicacy.

“So much… so much blood. Can’t waste it, can’t waste it…” he murmured. As he continued drinking his own blood, the originally fatal gash on his chest began to heal.

Monster…

Yu Wei’s expression turned icy, his vigilance intensifying.

With blood still smeared at the corner of his mouth, Tang Tian licked it clean with his tongue. His visible eye peered disdainfully at Yu Wei from behind the eyepatch. “See, Master? You’re not the same person from three years ago, and neither am I.”

“You denied me the Bestowment, withheld the Offering, yet I achieved it anyway! I received the Bestowment! I possess power beyond your reach!” Tang Tian’s face contorted with extreme arrogance and ecstasyan expression Yu Wei had never seen before.

He’s changed.

Yu Wei understood this was Tang Tian’s true nature, unveiled after obtaining what he desired.

“Envious? Jealous? As an Acquired Spirit, you can only endlessly train to enhance your combat instincts and skills. But what’s the use? Before us Innate Spirits, you’re nothing but trash!”

With a mad laugh, Tang Tian extended his arms, which began thickening and elongating at an unnatural rate. Veins bulged like earthworms beneath skin turning purplish-blue, showing signs of decay. His nails rapidly lengthened and blackened, transforming into bestial claws rather than human hands.

The transformation occurred in an instant.

Yu Wei tightened his grip on his blade, charging forward to interrupt the metamorphosis. But as he advanced, Tang Tian vanished from sight.

Gone!

Nonot gone.

Yu Wei pricked his ears, catching the whisper of movement beside himthe sound of Tang Tian’s rapid repositioning.

He’s flanking me, aiming for a sneak attack!

Combat instincts honed into muscle memory prompted Yu Wei to instantly swing his blade backward to parry.

Clang! Tang Tian’s blackened claws slammed violently against Yu Wei’s broadsword.

His strength had multiplied beyond human limits, the impact forcing Yu Wei several steps back and spraying sparks from the blade.

Foiled in his ambush, Tang Tian tsked in annoyance before suddenly leaping upward. Like a frog, he raised his darkened claws to swipe down at Yu Wei.

Yu Wei raised his broadsword to protect himself while simultaneously executing a high kick aimed at Tang Tian’s face.

The kick connected, and Tang Tian grunted in pain. As Yu Wei was about to retract his leg, he saw Tang Tian open his mouth, revealing sharp fangs that clamped down viciously on the instep of Yu Wei’s foot.

A sharp pain shot through him, and Yu Wei’s expression changed as he sensed grave danger. He immediately swung his blade horizontally at Tang Tian.

With a “thwack,” the sound of blade cutting into flesh echoed through the air as he severed Tang Tian’s right hand.

Forced to release Yu Wei’s foot from the impact, Tang Tian was knocked to the ground.

With the immediate crisis averted, Yu Wei glanced at Tang Tian’s severed hand on the ground, thinking he had at least dealt a heavy blow. He was about to step forward and finish the bastard off when he heard Tang Tian burst into loud laughter.

“Master, Master! Hahahaha.” Tang Tian’s voice sounded extremely excited. “Look at your foot, look at the wound where I bit you.”

Yu Wei’s shoe had been torn to shreds by Tang Tian’s fangs.

Hearing this, he lowered his head to look at his instep.

The area where Tang Tian had bitten him was rapidly showing signs of decay within mere seconds, with a ring of black hair growing around the edges of the wound.
