Chapter 82

The group traveled upstream by boat.

Gradually, the view before them widened. The riverbanks were no longer lined with undulating mountain peaks. They could hear the roar of car engines and smell the gasoline fumes permeating the roads.

They had finally returned to the bustling human society.

The small boat docked and came to a stop.

After disembarking, Ling Fang carefully folded the paper boat back to its original form. However, the creases appeared more numerous and disordered, and the paper seemed fragile from repeated use.

It seemed this cursed object also had a limited number of uses.

Several people were already waiting on the shore.

They wore grayish-blue work uniforms, dusty and inconspicuous in color, resembling the common attire of urban laborers.

“Director Ling,” one of them said, “Director Yang sent us to bring you back.”

Ling Fang nodded. “Thank you. My legs are inconvenient at the moment, and my team members are all slightly injured.”

They were from the Logistics Department.

Faced with this situation, the Logistics Department demonstrated extraordinary efficiency and professionalism. With just one instruction from Ling Fang and a brief exchange of glances, they knew exactly what to do.

They swiftly sprang into action. Soon, more people emerged on the shore, accompanied by four long vehicles resembling ambulances. Using stretchers, they carefully loaded Ling Fang and the other three onto the vehicles.

The vehicles were indeed equipped with basic medical devices, appearing no different from ordinary ambulances.

Xie Qingling, unable to move, was placed on a temporary stretcher and thoroughly examined.

The examination procedure was standard and executed with practiced ease.

“Vital signs are stable. No major issues,” the examiner stated before returning the equipment to its place and sitting upright.

Xie Qingling blinked, thinking to herself how impressive the Logistics Department was—truly a gathering of diverse talents.

In complete silence, the vehicles returned to the office.

Xie Qingling was carried back to her room, 206, on a stretcher, and the others received the same treatment.

Back in familiar surroundings, Xie Qingling felt at ease. Her eyelids grew heavy as drowsiness washed over her, and she soon drifted into a deep sleep.

The next day, she woke up and instinctively stretched.

After loosening her stiff joints, she belatedly realized her curse had vanished!

She could move again!

No longer paralyzed and immobile!

How wonderful, how absolutely wonderful.

Overjoyed, Xie Qingling rushed into the bathroom for a thorough wash, changed into fresh, clean clothes, and emerged from room 206 feeling refreshed and energetic.

Following her usual routine, she headed to the third floor, intending to offer incense at the Spirit shrines as always.

However, upon arriving, she found the daily offerings had already been properly arranged.

Likely the work of the Logistics Department again.

With nothing left to do, Xie Qingling went straight downstairs for breakfast.

In the first-floor lobby, Shen Huaizhou and Dai Xingyu had returned to their usual attire, sitting at a small table leisurely enjoying breakfast.

The table was laden with an abundant spread of food, including but not limited to steamed buns, soup dumplings, rice balls, bread, fermented cakes, nuts, milk, and more.

“Come over, have breakfast,” Dai Xingyu waved to her.

Xie Qingling, long accustomed to hastily solving meals with just a few buns, blinked in disbelief, wondering if she was dreaming.

She walked over, picked up a slice of toast slathered with butter, stuffed it into her mouth, took a sip of coffee, and after swallowing, asked, “Why so relaxed? Also, did a ‘River Snail Girl’ magically appear in our department? How is breakfast so lavish today?”

“Nah, not at all.” Dai Xingyu tilted his chin, signaling Xie Qingling to look out the large floor-to-ceiling window. “The ‘River Snail Girl’ is right there.”

Following Dai Xingyu’s direction, Xie Qingling saw a woman in a well-tailored suit, her back exuding an aura of Immortal Qi.

The fairy let out a furious roar.

Xie Qingling immediately confirmed her identity.

Yang Liuqing.

At the moment, Yang Liuqing had two differently colored bone-conduction earphones hooked over her ears, a mobile phone in her right hand, and a cigarette pinched in her left, looking extremely busy.

Xie Qingling guessed what had happened.

During the days their Operations Department was away, Yang Liuqing must have taken over the department’s responsibilities.

With the Operations Department, Logistics Department, and Administration Department all under her command, no wonder she was so frenzied she’d even slap a passing dog.

Just watching her made Xie Qingling’s scalp tingle in sympathy.

However, as a woman, Yang Liuqing—no matter how irritable—undeniably handled things with greater care and gentleness.

Looking at the breakfast prepared by the Logistics Department, Xie Qingling could only praise: Great Director Yang! Great Logistics Department!

“What about the director? Didn’t he return? Why is Yang Liuqing still covering for him?” Xie Qingling sat beside Dai Xingyu and Shen Huaizhou, eating breakfast as she asked.

“No idea. I woke up early today and didn’t see the director,” Dai Xingyu shook his head.

Shen Huaizhou also shook his head.

With his hair down and wearing a skirt, he regained his full presence and reverted to his usual aloof demeanor, barely speaking.

Xie Qingling nodded and continued eating.

“Alright, Shen Ge and I are heading out on patrol,” Dai Xingyu waved to Xie Qingling. “You stay back today.”

“Rest well,” Shen Huaizhou said.

Although Xie Qingling was no longer incapacitated, her battle with the River God had left her seriously injured.

Under Ye Anran’s treatment, she was out of mortal danger, but the depleted vitality would still take time to recover.

Xie Qingling watched them leave.

Just then, Yang Liuqing outside the villa finally ended her call and pushed the door open.

Spotting Xie Qingling, Yang Liuqing paused briefly, then naturally assigned tasks: “Awake? Since you’re up, get to work. The backlog of files from the past few days is on the table—don’t forget to handle them later.”

“…Alright.”

Xie Qingling sniffed the air, catching a faint scent of tobacco.

Before she could say anything, Yang Liuqing glanced down at the lit cigarette between her fingers and asked, “Mind if I smoke? I’ll put it out if you do.”

“Not at all.” Xie Qingling reminded her, “But you should smoke less. It’s not good for your health.”

Yang Liuqing nodded, took a deep drag from her cigarette, and exhaled slowly. She explained, “I don’t smoke often, only when I’m stressed. My record was three packs in one day, but normally I don’t even like this stuff.”

“Want one?” Yang Liuqing offered, extending the pack toward Xie Qingling.

Xie Qingling shook her head in refusal. “No thanks, I don’t smoke.”

“That’s good. If you don’t smoke, better never start. This stuff is addictive.”

Xie Qingling nodded in agreement.

Suddenly, Yang Liuqing’s expression shifted. She tapped her earpiece and yelled into it, “You can’t? You can’t climb mountains? Didn’t I tell you to prepare professional climbing equipment and ropes ages ago?”

“Did you think you could scale walls like martial arts masters?”

“Trying to force your way up without proper gear—are you trying to get yourselves killed? Or killed? Or just plain killed? Why don’t you just carry coffins on your missions? That way you can bury yourselves right where you drop!”

“Hurry up and get the logistics team on it!”

“Too slow? Request a helicopter!!!”

“We in the Logistics Department are conducting the final mountain sweep to ensure the area is ‘clean’,” Yang Liuqing said after ending the call, then looked up and smiled at Xie Qingling. “You’re new, right? Your department head asked me to keep an eye on you these past few days.”

“…”

Huh?

It took Xie Qingling a moment to process the information overload in that statement.

“Our department head… isn’t here?” she ventured cautiously.

“Your department head went back to headquarters for a debriefing this morning. He’s gone to the Old Royal City. I’m covering for him these few days.”

Xie Qingling instinctively asked, “Is it related to this River God incident?”

Yang Liuqing turned her head, her innocent-looking downturned eyes beneath her straight bangs turning sharp. She stared at Xie Qingling for a few moments before saying, “Correct.”

“But don’t ask anymore. Your clearance level isn’t high enough—I won’t tell you.”

Xie Qingling nodded to show she understood.

Yang Liuqing’s working style was completely different from Ling Fang’s.

Ling Fang appeared domineering but was actually overly cautious, always planning ahead and giving warnings for everything big and small. Yang Liuqing, beneath her delicate appearance, was decisive and straightforward in her actions, sharp and efficient.

Xie Qingling stopped asking questions and returned to her workstation, opening the files Yang Liuqing had prepared for her.

These were all the accumulated Singularity Events that needed processing after leaving Future City. The Logistics Department had already handled them, but the post-operation archiving hadn’t been completed yet.

As she flipped through the documents, Xie Qingling came across the file for the current River God marriage incident.

According to the information sent back by Chen Yinghui, preliminary investigations at the scene had identified four accomplices besides the Village Chief—all able-bodied men from the same village and clan.

In addition, through villagers’ mutual accusations, thirty more individuals related to the River God sacrifice were identified. These individuals have all been handcuffed and are awaiting trial.

In total, including the deceased Wang Laodian, thirty-six people have been apprehended.

May the spirits of the deceased rest in peace, if they have any awareness.

Xie Qingling continued burying herself in paperwork, managing to clear all the backlog in just one day. She even found time to assist Yang Liuqing, effectively becoming her assistant.

After this day’s work, Xie Qingling gained a deep understanding of the Logistics Department’s responsibilities:

Strictly speaking, the Logistics Department didn’t just handle logistics—it actually handled everything, even covering shifts for the Operations Department.

By evening, Yu Wei and Ye Anran had returned as well.

Both slept heavily and didn’t recover their energy until the next day.

For the following two days, Xie Qingling remained in the office, working with Yang Liuqing to manage affairs across three departments. The busyness was more exhausting than patrol duty.

Yang Liuqing’s address for her had shifted from “newcomer” to “Lingling,” showing considerable familiarity.

On the third day, Ling Fang returned after a long absence, looking travel-worn and weary.

Yang Liuqing, finally freed, hurriedly left the office without looking back, as if chased by ghosts.

Ling Fang unfastened and refastened the clasp of his leather gloves, producing a sharp “click.”

“Don’t leave after work tonight. I’m calling a meeting.”

Xie Qingling: “…”

After all department members had gathered, Ling Fang spoke with a stern expression, extremely serious: “The purpose of today’s meeting is to deliver a notification.”

“Pay attention—what I’m about to discuss involves top-level classified information. You’d better listen carefully and not miss a single word.”
