Chapter 81
One-eyed, tattooed arm, Duyan, Tang Tian…
“Tang Tian? Tang Tian!!” Yu Wei’s body stiffened abruptly. He quickly turned and ran back into the room, grabbing Wang Laodian’s corpse from the ground. His usually dull and gentle face now showed a furious, frustrated expression for the first time.
“Tell me, where is he?! Where is Tang Tian?”
“Get up! Get up for me!!”
However, Wang Laodian had already burned out his last flicker of life. No matter how Yu Wei shouted, it was uselessjust futile effort.
His face remained frozen in the mad laughter from before his death, appearing both eerie and pitiful.
Yu Wei’s expression wasn’t much better than Wang Laodian’s.
The room echoed with Yu Wei’s enraged, grief-stricken, and helpless shouts.
“Tang Tian…” Xie Qingling repeated the name, finding it unfamiliar.
But judging by Yu Wei’s reaction, this Tang Tian seemed to have deep connections with the department.
Xie Qingling looked up at Ling Fang, her eyes questioning.
Ling Fang’s face was also dark.
He briefly explained: “Tang Tian was once a member of Future City’s Special Events Handling Department too. An intern.”
Xie Qingling’s mouth fell open, speechless.
An intern.
Ling Fang hesitated to continue, but she knew what the unspoken second half of his sentence was
He never became a full member.
Just like her, Tang Tian’s first identity upon entering this world was as an intern at Future City’s Special Events Handling Department.
The difference was, she became a full member, while Tang Tian ultimately stood against the department.
Tang Tian was a traitor.
Ling Fang continued: “I hadn’t arrived in Future City back then. Lao Yu told me about this.”
“Tang Tian, as an Awakened, was recruited into the department as an intern.”
“At that time, the old department head was still around. He was responsible for Tang Tian’s assessment, deciding whether to tell Tang Tian the method of Praying to the Gods for Blessings, and whether Tang Tian was qualified to receive the Offering for praying to the gods.”
“After some time together, the old department head felt there was something off about Tang Tian’s temperament, so he extended the three-month assessment period for further observation.”
“Ultimately, the old department head concluded that Tang Tian wasn’t suitable for this work. He planned to have Ye Anran erase his memories and let Tang Tian return to the ordinary world as a regular person.”
“But once this door opens, it’s not easy to close. After tasting the flavor of possessing great power, one can no longer endure being ordinary.”
“Tang Tian learned he hadn’t passed the assessment and grew resentful toward the old department head.”
Yu Wei walked out of the room, his face unusually fierce and grim. He picked up where Ling Fang left off: “During one department mission, Tang Tian deliberately provided false information. Other department members couldn’t provide support in time, leaving the old department head to face the battle alone.”
“The old department head died in action during that mission.”
Yu Wei said bitterly: “After that, Tang Tian disappeared. I swore I would personally kill that scum to avenge the old department head!”
“I never expected to encounter him again here.”
“He must have become a true Spirit User by now.” Yu Wei lowered his eyes, his expression dark and unreadable.
If an ordinary person were to kill Wang Laodian and take away the Piggyback Ghost right under the noses of the six of them, it would be impossible.
To act so silently and retreat unscathed could only mean the other party possessed some kind of Mystical Power.
Tang Tian had received the Divine Blessing and delved deeper into that world.
Xie Qingling lowered her head, remaining silent all along.
According to her deduction, Tang Tian, holding a grudge, had used the Ghoul to kill the department head before leaving the department, wandering off to who knows where.
Calling it wandering wasn’t entirely accuratehe must have had some experience that allowed him to successfully join another organization.
This so-called organization also possessed the means to pray to the gods and receive Bestowments, turning Tang Tian, an Awakened, into a Spirit User.
Lurking in the shadows, they had the ability to orchestrate a decades-long conspiracy to nurture an Evil God, with a well-structured successionsome initiated it, others took over.
This indicated the organization had existed for a long time, with a well-developed structure and functions. Moreover, the organization likely had a complete set of operational guidelines, as members handed over tasks to one another, showing they knew what they were doing and how to do it.
They were a bunch of lunatics, scum who did as they pleased.
What was even more terrifying was that they weren’t isolated individuals or a disorganized mob.
They were an organization.
Truly… a formidable opponent.
Although the power of gods and ghosts was fearsome, their minds weren’t as complex; their energy might be terrifying, but they weren’t undefeatable.
But if it was an organization composed of humans, using the power of Ghouls to stir up trouble, that… was simply unimaginable.
Xie Qingling couldn’t help but grip the armrests of her chair tightly. Even though sunlight bathed her body, she still felt a chill running through her.
Shen Huaizhou, standing in the tree, saw the three of them, jumped down, and walked over to ask, “Department Head, what’s wrong?”
His voice was heard before he was seen.
Ling Fang hadn’t seen Shen Huaizhou but was already accustomed to his manner and spoke to him as if he were air.
Ling Fang said, “Tang Tian has appeared. He has become a Spirit User, killed Wang Laodian, and taken the Piggyback Ghost. He has now escaped, and his whereabouts are unknown.”
“The mastermind is Tang Tian?” Shen Huaizhou was taken aback.
He had joined the department earlier than Xie Qingling and knew more about its past, so he was naturally familiar with Tang Tian’s name.
“No, it’s a much larger entity.” Ling Fang lowered his eyes, lost in thoughtor perhaps in emptiness. “This isn’t the place to talk. We’ll discuss it back at the base.”
Shen Huaizhou nodded with a grim expression.
He glanced at Xie Qingling sitting in the chair, then picked her up, chair and all, and swiftly returned to Ma Qiaoqiao’s house.
The incident had come to an end.
But the aftermath still needed to be dealt with.
The two patients who hadn’t fully recovered were assigned to stay at home.
Shen Huaizhou was tasked with guarding Xie Qingling, while Xie Qingling remained immobilized.
The two of them sat at home, staring at each other blankly, while Ling Fang and the others dealt with the chaos in the village, contacted the Logistics Department, and coordinated with Chen Yinghui and his team to bring people in and clean up the mess.
Xie Qingling asked the air, “Shen Huaizhou, are you still there?”
“I’m here.”
“Have you met the old director?”
“Only seen his memorial photo.”
“Oh, what kind of person would you say the old director was?”
“Like Lao Yu, an older uncle. I heard they came out of the military together and then became Acquired Spirits.”
“So they were comrades-in-arms, no wonder Brother Yu was so emotional.”
Xie Qingling asked again, “Do you think we’ll die someday too?”
“Let’s just live with our heads tucked in our belts for now.”
“I wonder what will happen to me after I die?”
“Department members get free burial plots, and they’ll bury you in a location with good feng shui.”
“Really? That’s quite a good benefit.”
“Maybe our graves can be next to each other then.”
“Being neighbors after death? Not bad. You’d probably still look good even as a ghost, right?”
“I don’t know, I’ve never died before.”
“When will the director and the others return?”
“Soon, probably.”
Shen Huaizhou sat curled up on the doorstep, motionless.
Xie Qingling knew he was there, but she often forgot about his presence until the sun tilted westward, about to set, when Shen Huaizhou’s elongated shadow fell across the doorstep, allowing her to confirm his location.
The two waited in silence.
Only when the sunlight dimmed and the rolling green peaks turned dark did Ling Fang and the others return.
Only Ling Fang and Dai Xingyu came back.
Ling Fang said, “We need to leave. I’ve already called the Logistics Department and Chen Yinghui’s people.”
“Ye Anran and Yu Wei are guarding the village until they arrive.”
“The Herdsman has already patrolled the entire village – there are no more Ghouls, no Spirit Users, and no deities here.”
“Our mission is complete. We’ll leave the rest to Chen Yinghui’s team.”
“Let’s pack up and head back.”
Dai Xingyu and Ling Fang gathered their belongings, collected their tools, and finished equipping themselves.
Shen Huaizhou lifted Xie Qingling from her chair onto his back, then followed Ling Fang as the team departed from the village.
The village was far from Future City, nestled in a remote mountain valley with steep, difficult paths.
Coupled with Xie Qingling’s near-complete immobility, the journey back to the city became particularly challenging.
Instead of taking the mountain road, Ling Fang led them to the riverbank.
The River God was gone from the river now, leaving only rippling clear waves under the setting sun’s glow, the water surface dancing with scattered points of light, appearing serene and gentle.
“We’ll take the water route back,” Ling Fang said, crouching down and releasing a paper-folded white boat.
The white boat was initially only palm-sized, but upon touching the water, it gradually inflated and expanded as if being blown up.
Finally, it transformed into a small craft that rocked gently on the river surface, seemingly blending with the water’s waves.
The four boarded the boat, which moved automatically without oars, traveling upstream and creating a trail of white foam.
Xie Qingling paused, murmuring, “Oh no, the director’s going to be paralyzed too…”
“Not exactly,” Ling Fang glanced at her. “This boat’s curse isn’t as strong as the Wooden Kite’s. At most, it’ll leave me immobile for some time, but not completely paralyzed.”
“I see.”
Dai Xingyu, who had patrolled the entire village, was completely exhausted.
He lay on his back on the bed, panting heavily like an overworked dog, and gasped out between breaths: “I’m exhausted. Finally… finally I can rest for a while.”
Shen Huaizhou sat at the bow of the boat, acting as if he were air. As the only fully mobile normal human present, he consciously took up guard duty while remaining vigilanteven though the River God was no longer in the river.
Once Dai Xingyu had caught his breath, he tilted his head to look at Xie Qingling, who couldn’t move, and burst into loud laughter filled with merciless mockery. Just as Xie Qingling was about to darken her expression and commit the offense to memory, he suddenly changed the subject, saying: “Speaking of which, while I was patrolling, I found a suicide note.”
“A suicide note?”
“Yeah, it belonged to a mountain climber, but it’s impossible to tell who wrote it. There’s no date, as if it was written a very, very long time ago. I think it’s beautifully written, and it actually fits us quite well.”
Xie Qingling said, “Read it out loud.”
So Dai Xingyu unfolded the elegantly handwritten suicide note and began his expressive recitation.
“I might die today, or I might die tomorrow.”
“I might die on the road, or I might die at the destination.”
“In this life, who isn’t heading toward hell? We just happen to be passing through the mortal world.”
“I have already crossed high mountains, I have already seen the sun. My body has been dampened by dew and dried by fierce windsI have no regrets in this life.”
“When maggots fill my eye sockets, when my decaying body becomes a bed for fungistranger, if you come across my unburied bones by the roadside, do not grieve for me.”
“I take heaven and earth as my shroud, wrapping my own corpse.”
“Hahahahaha.”
Amidst the faint mountains and distant waters, the light boat rode over the rushing waves and vanished upon the river’s surface.
