Chapter 8
A heavy weight pressed down from behind. Though she couldn’t see the Crossroad Ghost, it gave Xie Qingling a tangible sense of burden.
Xie Qingling ignored the incessant murmuring voice at her back.
The Rakshasa Ghost undoubtedly meant harm, but she dared not easily trust the Crossroad Ghost at this life-or-death moment.
Even though its calls of “sister, sister” sounded enticing, who knew if it harbored sinister intentions?
Unless absolutely necessary, Xie Qingling had to maintain the last bit of initiative in her own hands.
“Get away from me!” She reached back and grabbed at the air, catching nothing, but the weight on her body suddenly lightened the Crossroad Ghost had left.
While running, Xie Qingling pressed the red button on her silver bracelet.
A contact list popped up.
She sent a message to Ling Fang the only message she could send:
“There’s a Rakshasa Ghost at the University Student Activity Center. It eats people.”
Simultaneously.
“Scrape…”
“Scrape…”
The sound grew closer.
Along with it came heavy, thunderous footsteps.
“Boom,” “boom,” “boom”…
The entire building seemed to shake with each step.
Dust that had settled for years rained down from the ceiling. Flakes of white wall plaster peeled off, revealing mottled patches beneath. Spiderwebs in the corners tore loose, and spiders dropped to the floor.
Out of the corner of her eye, Xie Qingling glanced back and saw enormous, clawed, human-like footprints appearing in the thin layer of salt spread across the floor!
The footprints were three times the size of a human’s, accompanied by the “boom, boom, boom” of heavy steps, closing in on her step by step.
It was clear that this Rakshasa Ghost, whether in strength or size, was far from weak.
Soon, the Rakshasa Ghost stepped onto floor areas without salt, and the footprints vanished from sight.
But she was certain it was still following her!
Xie Qingling ran for her life, desperate to put distance between them and buy herself even a sliver of time to survive.
As the Rakshasa ghost blade scraped loudly against the floor, her heart pounded wildly, almost leaping out of her throat.
She dashed for the stairs, pushed through every emergency door she saw, using the corridors and classroom layouts to create as many obstacles as possible for the Rakshasa Ghost.
She just had to hold on a little longer…
Until the authorities arrived, she had to find a way to slow the Rakshasa Ghost’s advance and ensure she stayed alive.
Xie Qingling ducked into an open multimedia classroom.
Just then, the relentless scraping sound behind her abruptly stopped.
Had it… left?
No.
It was swinging its blade!
Her pupils contracted. Instinct for survival made her lurch to the side and crouch down
Her intuition proved sharp.
The next moment, the desks and chairs in front of her were cleanly sliced in half!
The whoosh of the swinging blade echoed in her ears.
Dangerously close.
The blade had swept down almost right against her body.
If she hadn’t dodged in time…
The Rakshasa Ghost raised its slaughtering blade. The prey before it had not yet awakened, utterly defenseless. With one light swing, it could feast. But that wretched Crossroad Ghost it had betrayed its own kind.
The Crossroad Ghost’s intervention prevented the Rakshasa Ghost’s blade from harming the Psychic in the slightest. Originally, it could have at least severed one of the Psychic’s hands.
The starving Rakshasa Ghost couldn’t immediately swing a second strike. Furious, it angrily grabbed the Crossroad Ghost by the throat, slammed it to the ground, and beat it mercilessly.
The frail Crossroad Ghost couldn’t struggle free.
In its childhood, it had left home with its mother and met its end at a bustling crossroads. Still young, it held a deep fondness for older women and would instinctively help those plagued by misfortune whenever it encountered them.
Today, oh today, was a special day. The Rakshasa Ghost and Crossroad Ghost, both among the Thirty-Six Ghosts, met here. The enraged Rakshasa Ghost would uphold the reputation of the Thirty-Six Ghosts and purge their ranks. The Thirty-Six Ghosts had no need for such an unweaned weakling. Before devouring the Psychic, it could first enjoy an appetizer.
The Crossroad Ghost… came to help her? And the Rakshasa Ghost didn’t just eat humans it ate ghosts too?
These two sudden revelations made Xie Qingling pause.
Should she take advantage of the two ghosts’ internal conflict to escape now?
But what after escaping?
Would the Rakshasa Ghost not come for her after finishing its “appetizer”?
Don’t be ridiculous.
The Rakshasa Ghost’s target had always been her, not anyone else!
Having just broken free from the Crossroad Ghost’s illusion, her eyes still retained traces of the boundary between reality and delusion, allowing her to glimpse something not of this mortal world.
Suddenly recalling details about Dong Jia, Xie Qingling instantly formed a hypothesis.
Without hesitation, she discarded the Bewitching Grain Branch in her hand.
In that instant, the world before her twisted into a different form in Xie Qingling’s eyes.
Near the lectern stood a monster with a black face, fanged teeth, crimson hair, and blue eyes.
The monster stood a full three meters tall, its head nearly scraping the ceiling.
This was the Rakshasa Ghost.
Things were just as she suspected.
By entering the ghosts’ illusion, she could see them.
This was the ghosts’ territory, and through their perspective, she perceived them.
The abrupt sight of such a monster made Xie Qingling’s heartbeat seem to skip. Her mouth slightly agape, she took several deep breaths and quickly suppressed the turmoil within.
Fear and panic weren’t appropriate now there was no time for that.
Looking down, she saw the Rakshasa Ghost’s right foot pinning a small ghost that only reached thigh-height.
The small ghost had a human-like face, but with four pitch-black eyes.
Its body was emaciated, limbs and torso like withered wood, appearing extremely frail.
Compared to the towering Rakshasa Ghost, the Crossroad Ghost seemed utterly weak and vulnerable.
And indeed, it was.
At that moment, it was being ground under the Rakshasa Ghost’s foot, struggling wildly and emitting piercing wails.
Xie Qingling drew her fruit knife.
The Rakshasa Ghost, focused on dealing with the disruptive Crossroad Ghost, had its back to Xie Qingling. It hadn’t noticed that she had been pulled into the illusion, seen its true form, and discerned its position.
Could she manage to injure it?
Xie Qingling wasn’t certain.
But what she could confirm was that this was her only chance her only opportunity with any hope of success.
Xie Qingling quietly climbed onto the table, then aimed for the Rakshasa Ghost’s back, leaped with her toes, and jumped with all her might!
The Crossroad Ghost hadn’t expected Xie Qingling not to seize the chance to escape but instead stay behind and leap onto the Rakshasa Ghost’s back.
It let out a piercing shriek.
Realizing something, the Rakshasa Ghost was overjoyed.
It stretched out its massive palm, trying to grab this Psychic who had delivered herself into its hands.
How foolish, so foolish! It had chased her for so long, and now she had come to it willingly.
But unexpectedly, the next moment…
Xie Qingling, her hands covered in blood, covered its eyes.
“Ahhh”
Wisps of green smoke rose, and the air filled with a scorched smell, unlike anything produced by burning firewood in the human world.
Excruciating pain swept through the Rakshasa Ghost’s eyes, face, nose…
The Psychic’s palms were deeply slashed, and a continuous stream of fresh blood fell onto the Rakshasa Ghost’s body.
The blood corroded its eyes, burned through its ears, and charred its skin.
The Psychic clinging to its back was no longer that weak, defenseless human but a bloodsucking leech capable of draining a person dry!
Xie Qingling tried to stab it with a fruit knife, but once again, the blade broke!
Clever Psychic, you have once again fought for a chance at survival. Your blood has corroded the Rakshasa Ghost’s eyes, robbing it of its vision. However, Psychic, do not be greedy. Mortal weapons cannot harm the Rakshasa Ghost in the slightest, and your blood is not enough to kill it. Perhaps the wise choice is to take advantage of its blindness, pick an elegant posture, and flee quickly.
In agony, the Rakshasa Ghost flung Xie Qingling away violently. She landed on the table, bounced once, and then crashed onto the floor.
It hurt, but she hadn’t sustained any substantial injuries.
Compared to her, the Rakshasa Ghost had lost half its face though for a creature already ferocious and grotesque, the concept of disfigurement was meaningless. Depriving it of vision and disrupting its movements undoubtedly gave Xie Qingling a greater advantage and made her safer.
No matter how fierce a monster, once it loses its eyes, its combat effectiveness is greatly reduced.
Xie Qingling couldn’t help but smile, then immediately turned and ran.
The Crossroad Ghost had long since fled.
It ran even faster than Xie Qingling.
However, since Xie Qingling could still see the Rakshasa Ghost’s true form, the Crossroad Ghost likely hadn’t gone far, as its illusion technique remained intact.
It was probably hiding in some corner of the university student activity center, too afraid to show itself.
From behind came clattering and banging sounds; without looking back, she knew it was the blind, clumsy Rakshasa Ghost struggling to chase after her.
Deprived of its sight, the Rakshasa Ghost could only rely on its sense of smell to locate the Psychic.
If this were ancient times, with open wilderness or low earthen houses and tiled roofs, even using only its sense of smell, this Psychic would not escape its grasp.
But…
But this chaotic, unfamiliar mortal world why did it have to erect such tall buildings? Why were there so many strange, unnatural materials? Their smells were all too peculiar…
The Rakshasa Ghost could no longer skillfully utilize its sense of smell.
Finally, with its chaotic pursuit, Xie Qingling successfully created a gap of one floor between them.
The Rakshasa Ghost could no longer follow closely behind her, exerting its overwhelming pressure, nor could it deliver a fatal blow at any moment.
What Xie Qingling needed to do now was wait here wait for Ling Fang and the arrival of the relevant authorities.
Her face pale, she used the Ghost Blade to cut strips from her clothing and performed a simple bandaging of her palm to stop the bleeding.
Though the wound on her hand wasn’t fatal, if the bleeding continued, she feared she might go into shock.
The Rakshasa Ghost halted its chase. Not only had it lost track of its prey, but it had also lost its Ghost Blade.
With the help of the traitor, the already cunning Psychic had gained enough skill to escape. Disgusting traitor, shameless Psychic the Rakshasa Ghost finally realized clearly that the mortal world had long changed beyond recognition. Against these weak humans, it no longer held an absolute, overwhelming advantage.
…But so what? Losing one big fish, it still had many small fish. Even if it couldn’t deal with the shameless Psychic, it could still easily harvest the flesh and blood of other humans as nourishment for its recovery.
The night breeze carried the fragrance of food. This place was full of young, vibrant bodies, neatly packed into little boxes.
The Rakshasa Ghost decided to temporarily give up on the troublesome Psychic, find those little boxes, and feast to its heart’s content.Tonight would be a gluttonous feast, a self-indulgent carnival for the Rakshasa Ghost.
Hearing these words, Xie Qingling’s face instantly turned ashen.
