Chapter 76
The Immortal Slaughtering Formation activated, and the River God appeared.
What was that? A deity with a face displaying delicate feminine beauty. The undeniable curves of its body declared its gender to all present.
It wore a yellowish-brown long skirt, as if emerging from ancient times. The hem resembled the color of a riverbed scoured by flowing wateryellow tinged with white, like the turbid waves crashing against the shore.
Beneath the skirt, there were no feet.
It stood suspended in mid-air as if lifted ashore by a wave, its skirt swaying and flowing like moving river water. It resembled a flowing river itself, or as if wearing the river as a garmentusing the river as its skirt and the earth as its body. Its hair drifted like algae in water, but instead of hanging downward, it floated upward, swaying and drifting.
The River God held a snake in each hand, its face gloomy as it stared at the five people on the shore.
These five annoying fliesthese five humans who knew no fear of death!
With a sudden dive, it charged toward Xie Qingling, who was closest, intending to suffocate her with turbid river water.
But the moment it moved, the River God’s expression changed.
The Immortal Slaughtering Formation on the ground emitted an aura that made it deeply uncomfortable, like withered hands silently emerging from a swamp, carrying the unique chill and ominousness of ghouls, causing the deity to feel physical discomfort.
This discomforting aura crept over the River God’s body like a cold, sinister snake.
Almost instinctively, the River God wanted to flee back into the riverbed.
But as it turned, Xie Qingling shouted, “Fang Shen, stop it!”
Instantly rising dams once again blocked the River God’s path, leaving it with no retreat and forcing it to halt.
Its yellow-white skirt, unable to retract in time, slammed heavily against the dam, splattering water droplets in all directions, turning into transparent beads.
This annoying human again!
“I’ll kill you, kill you!” the River God growled in a low voice that tightened listeners’ ears, as if they could hear the river’s roar and the thunderous crash of waves.
Releasing the snakes from its hands, the River God commanded them to swiftly slither toward Xie Qingling.
Meanwhile, it focused on forcefully impacting Fang Shen’s dams, attempting to escape.
The ominous aura gave the River God a foreboding sense of danger, and it felt it must leave this place quickly.
Simultaneously, the two snakes swayed their spectral bodies, charging at Xie Qingling with extreme speed.
Xie Qingling’s expression turned cold as she swung her blade, cleanly severing one of the snakes in two.
The other snake was pinned to the ground by an arrow suddenly shot by Ling Fang.
Both were defeated in a single move.
Xie Qingling paused in surprise.
Just like that?
Was the River God this weak?
No sooner had this thought crossed her mind than she saw the severed snake split into two separate snakes, both moving independently.
The pinned snake on the ground struggled free, dividing itself and becoming two snakes as well.
Two snakes had now become four, all launching another assault toward Xie Qingling.
These snakes couldn’t be killed!
Xie Qingling’s face darkened as she realized conventional methods wouldn’t work against these snakesthe more they were cut, the more they would multiply.
But the snakes were already too close. If she didn’t defend herself, she would surely be bitten.
She stepped back to create distance while raising Blood Oath high, slashing at the snake leaping toward her.
She blocked the snake’s attack, but it split into two.
More of them now.
One of them bit Xie Qingling’s arm. She shuddered and immediately flung the snake away, suppressing the urge to slice it in half.
The bite sent sharp pain shooting through her arm, followed by a numbing sensation. Her arm swelled up instantly.
The snake’s fangs were venomous.
So troublesome.
Ye Anran promptly detoxified and healed her, restoring the wound to its original state.
By now, the snakes on the ground had multiplied to six.
The six snakes slithered toward other members of the team, attacking separately.
Xie Qingling warned, “These snakes can’t be killedthey split in two endlessly. They’re also venomous, so be careful not to get bitten.”
Hearing this, the others’ hearts tightened instantly.
Unable to kill them yet unable to wait helplessly for death, and forbidden from being bittentheir attacks became restrained and hesitant.
Dai Xingyu fared better; his role was primarily defense. With his shield, he could block the snakes’ advances without engaging them directly, thus avoiding contributing to their numbers.
But the others relied on offensive techniques. Not attacking meant getting bitten.
Attacking meant increasing the snake count.
A classic dilemma.
For a moment, the situation reached a stalemate.
Even though the team was extremely careful to avoid killing the snakes and diligently evaded their bites, within minutes the ground was crawling with snakescompletely covered.
The snakes multiplied rapidly without restriction, like mitosis run amok, akin to cancer cells.
They swarmed collectively, trapping the humans firmly. They fell like rain, one after another, their mouths gaping to bite, hissing with flickering tongues. Their cold, vertical pupils stared fixedly at the struggling humans, as if they had already become prey on a platter.
Xie Qingling and the others found it increasingly difficult to cope.
Continuing like this was no solution.
Xie Qingling swung Blood Oath with both handsone arm had lost count of how many snakes it had slashed. Her face and body were covered in blood, sticky and thoroughly uncomfortable.
These snakes were merely driven by the River God to slow their progresstruly inexhaustible, only draining their stamina.
Xie Qingling knew that persisting like this would lead only to a dead end. She couldn’t help but shift her gaze toward the River God.
The River God roared while violently assaulting Fang Shen’s embankment. Murky river water splashed everywhere, and cracks began to appear faintly on Fang Shen’s barrier.
Xie Qingling noticed that, compared to initially, bulging blue veins had emerged on the River God’s face. They resembled a shifting netlike blood vessels or earthworms. These pulsating patterns moved slowly across the River God’s body like living creatures.
With each movement of these patterns, the River God’s expression grew more ferocious, and each strike against the embankment became stronger.
At first, these marks hadn’t been present on the River God.
It was the work of the Immortal Slaughtering Formation.
But it wasn’t enough.
Too slow.
Fang Shen had just awakened. Having long been deprived of worldly Incense Offerings, He likely couldn’t hold out much longer.
If this continued, the River God would eventually break through Fang Shen’s blockade and return to the riverbed.
Once the tiger was released back to the mountains, catching the River God again would be exceedingly difficult.
Xie Qingling barely needed to thinkher subconscious had already decided what to do.
“Director, my vessel is full.” Xie Qingling said, “The Blood Oath you engraved with spells for me has absorbed its capacity of ghoul energy.”
Xie Qingling continued, “The Immortal Slaughtering Formation is too slow. If we directly inject the ghoul energy into the River God, the effect should be quite good.”
Ling Fang instantly understood her meaning.
If they could strike the River God and release the ghoul energy stored in the vessel, it would immediately send the River God into a frenzied, rampaging state.
Then they could use the shrine to capture it.
It was indeed a good method.
The difficulty lay in their current inability to get close to the River God.
Whether it was the surging waves from its robe or the swarming snakes covering the ground, these were all obstacles preventing them from approaching the River God.
If Xie Qingling got too close to the River God, she would likely face grave danger.
However…
After a moment’s thought, Ling Fang said, “Understood.”
“You just charge forward. Leave the rest to us.”
Xie Qingling nodded, then gripping her Blood Oath, she lowered her head and charged forward.
The River God sensed her intention and instinctively commanded the venomous snakes to entangle Xie Qingling, preventing her from approaching.
Just a little longer, just a little longer, and it could break through Fang Shen’s cage and escape.
She must not be allowed to get close.
But…
The snakes crawling across the ground gathered together, attempting to wrap around Xie Qingling’s legs and sink their fangs into her flesh, when suddenly they lost track of her position. The snake swarm crashed into each other in confusion, tumbling over themselves and crawling chaotically across the ground.
Whether through sight or sensing her presence, Xie Qingling had completely disappeared.
Where… did she go?
The snake swarm lost their direction of attack, like a leaderless mob, falling into momentary chaos.
Beasts will always be beasts, lacking intelligence.
Sensing something amiss, the River God immediately summoned massive waves. The yellow-white robe ceased its assault on Fang Shen’s embankment and instead tightly protected the area where it stood, creating a confined space around itself before slamming heavily onto the ground.
Xie Qingling’s hidden breath was broken, forcing her to reveal herself as she dodged the River God’s attack.
Closershe was getting closer to the River God.
Xie Qingling continued running forward.
The River God attempted to engulf her with giant waves, its massive robe already enveloping Xie Qingling, but she seemed unaware, continuing her charge.
Just as the enormous waves were about to crash down
“Shield!” Dai Xingyu shouted, and a shield materialized in the air, completely covering Xie Qingling and blocking the waves.
The River God paused, then flew into a rage.
Realizing the waves were useless against Xie Qingling, the River God commanded the snake swarm to descend upon her once more like a dark cloud.
Ling Fang loaded a new arrow into his crossbow. With a “whoosh,” the arrow shot forth.
What had been a single arrow suddenly split apart like fireworks, dividing into numerous fine needles that shot down the sky snake swarm.
A few snakes landed on Xie Qingling’s shoulders, splitting into two and biting into her flesh, yet she showed no sign of pain as she continued forward.
“Returning Spring!” Ye Anran simultaneously deployed both silver and black needles, both healing Xie Qingling and pinning down those snakes.
Closer, she was very close now.
Xie Qingling’s eyes remained fixed intently on the River God’s position.
The River God panicked, slamming against the embankment with increasing force, emitting low, gloomy roars from its throat.
It had an intuitionallowing this woman who seemed never to look back to get close would bring no good.
Yu Wei charged forward with his broadsword, positioning himself behind Xie Qingling to block the persistent snake horde and guard her rear.
The River God was now within reach.
“Xiao Xie, lend me your shoulder!” Yu Wei suddenly shouted, then dropped to his knees, sliding straight forward until he stopped right in front of Xie Qingling.
Xie Qingling leaped up, one foot landing heavily on Yu Wei’s shoulder, using the momentum to soar into the air.
A crescent moon hung high in the sky as Xie Qingling seemed to descend upon it, gripping the Blood Oath as she dove straight toward the River God.
“Puny human, mere dust in the vast ocean, how dare you dream of slaying a god!” Watching Xie Qingling’s swift and fierce descent, the River God let out a furious roar. “Behold my raging waves and the ocean’s wrath!”
The River God’s robes billowed endlessly, the river swelled darker and fiercer, its waters surging over the embankment like a monstrous beast baring its fangs, engulfing the woman who approached against the light, leaving only a silhouette.
“Is that so?”
Xie Qingling sneered. “Then watch closely!”
“Watch how this mere speck of dust tames your river!”
As her words fell, a colossal wave crashed toward her, blotting out the moon and sky. Yet Xie Qingling neither dodged nor evaded, charging straight through the towering fury of the waves toward the River God!
