Chapter 75

Everyone in the venue was stunned.

The River God had taken Shen Huaizhou, but… Shen Huaizhou was a guy!!!

Dai Xingyu muttered, “Really… should I say this River God has great eyesight, or fucking terrible eyesight?”

How audaciously lustful!

[Every bride taken away would eventually sink to the riverbed. They lay quietly on the river floor, letting silt erode their faces, like lotuses buried in mud.]

[Lie down, sleep, with only the sound of flowing water in your ears, and only the sight of swimming fish before your eyes. After tonight, the bride’s body and soul will forever belong to the River God.]

Xie Qingling said, “Shen Huaizhou was taken by the River God and sank to the riverbed.”

“After tonight, the bride’s body and soul will forever belong to the River God.” Xie Qingling repeated the voice in her head, her expression calming. “But tonight hasn’t passed yet. Shen Huaizhou is temporarily safe.”

Hearing the definite news, Ling Fang’s eyebrows furrowed into a deep crease.

Xie Qingling was being too reckless.

Although he had said that Xie Qingling should take the lead during this operation to maintain rhythmsince the arrow was already on the bowstring and had to be releasedShen Huaizhou’s disappearance still made him waver.

Ling Fang said, “The operation to eliminate the River God is suspended. We rescue Shen Huaizhou first.”

Just as Ye Anran and the others were about to emerge from their hiding spots, they heard Xie Qingling say, “No, the operation to eliminate the River God continues.”

“Don’t be so reckless!” Ling Fang shouted.

For a moment, Ye Anran and the others didn’t know who to listen to, frozen in place.

Ling Fang stared at Xie Qingling with a “you’re crazy” expression. “Shen Huaizhou was taken by the River God. If we don’t save him, he’ll die.”

“But not now.” Xie Qingling said seriously, “Shen Huaizhou can hold his breath underwater for a day. At least until dawn, he’s safe. We’ve prepared for so long. If we stop the operation now, we’ll never get another chance like this.”

Ling Fang laughed in anger. “I gave you command of this operation, not so you could recklessly decide a teammate’s fate.”

“If we stop the operation now, we can bring Shen Huaizhou back, but it will also enrage the River God. He still controls the river. If we retreat and let Him flood, who knows how many lives it would cost. But if we press forward and kill the River God here and now, then Shen Huaizhou will be safe too.”

“You gave me command, and you can take it back now.” Xie Qingling lifted her leg and drew the Blood Oath, her voice unexpectedly calm. “If you revoke my command, I’ll stay silent and not say another word. But Captain, you could also choose to trust my judgment. Trust me this once.”

Ling Fang fell silent, opening his mouth to speak but saying nothing.

He stared intently into Xie Qingling’s eyes, seeing only calmness and composure.

Xie Qingling continued, “Captain, your intentions are good, and you’ve done well. You want to protect us, but protection doesn’t mean sheltering us under your wings, arranging everything perfectly, and blocking all risks.”

“Danger isn’t a fixed constant. There will come a day when you can’t cover everything. If your team members can’t hold their own, they’ll still meet their end when that time comes. Occasionally, you can choose to trust usyour team members aren’t as fragile as you think.”

“You decide whether to continue or stop.” Xie Qingling tossed the decision back to him.

Ling Fang gritted his teeth, about to speak, when Shen Huaizhou’s muffled voice suddenly came through the earpiece: “Minister, listen to her. I can still hold on.”

Listen to her??

At a time like this, still listen to her?

Shen Huaizhou, you’re really something else!

Dai Xingyu was stunned speechless.

Having followed Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou on missions outside the city, he had long grown accustomed to their private working styles.

When the minister wasn’t around, they’d go crazy, risk their lives, do the most outrageous things.

But to be this reckless at a life-or-death moment was simply too much.

Dai Xingyu was already too shocked to speak.

“I’m trapped by some kind of energy and can’t break free. I can only lie here on the riverbed.” Shen Huaizhou’s voice, still muffled as if someone was covering his mouth, came through again. “Once you kill the River God, I can swim up on my own.”

“It’s fine,” Shen Huaizhou said.

“Madness! They’ve all gone mad!” Ling Fang roared. He suddenly raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face, then stared at Xie Qingling and said, “The operation continues.”

“Everyone, from now on, follow Xie Qingling’s commands without questionincluding me.”

Ye Anran’s heart pounded nervously in her chest. She glanced at Ling Fang through the hazy, indistinct moonlight, but he only returned to his position with a grim expression, ready to light the lamp at any moment.

She then turned her gaze to Yu Wei, who gave her a complicated look and nodded.

This somewhat reassured Ye Anran.

Thus, everyone returned to their positions, resuming their previous stances as if nothing had happened.

The operation to encircle and eliminate the River God continued.

Xie Qingling opened her silver case and took out the shrines containing Shui Yong and Fang Shen, placing them on the ground.

“I’ll force the River God out. Wait for my command. The moment it appears, light the lamp and activate the Immortal Slaughtering Formation.”

“Received,” Ling Fang said.

Xie Qingling murmured softly, “Yin and Yang reflect the cosmos, spells command gods and spirits. Shui Yong, Fang Shen, lend me your strength!”

As Xie Qingling’s chant faded, the ground suddenly rumbled. The flat earth began to undulate as if something were rapidly crawling beneath, breaking through the solid, sturdy riverbank and cracking open with fissures.

These cracks extended toward the riverbed like invisible tentacles, already reaching the river.

The once peacefully flowing river under the moonlight suddenly surged with monstrous waves.

Waves rose without wind, turbid water carrying years of accumulated debris and silt from the riverbed, swirling into a massive vortex that seemed intent on devouring everything nearby.

The vortex grew larger and higher, already towering above the riverbed as if lifted by an unseen force.

The sound of colliding currents and the dull roar of the swirling vortex shattered the mountain’s tranquility.

Waves stirred the wind, which finally surged and howled, violently bending the riverside trees and pressing down the green grass.

Xie Qingling stood by the bank, close to the whirlpool, the roaring wind nearly tearing her red garments to shreds.

Yet not a single drop of water fell upon her. She stood as if rooted there, observing at close range the divine craftsmanship wrought in secret by a deity.

[The Water God has returned to the river, summoning its former followers. All spirits in the river heed the call, uniting in a mighty effort to upheave this decayed, shadowy riverbed.]

[Tremble and submit, vile River God, cruel deity! Surrender the authority you hold!]

Suddenly, the riverbed shook as if struck by an earthquake.

A rumbling sound broke the whirlpool’s flow, and everything seemed to halt.

The river surface briefly calmed, but it was only temporary.

In an instant, the unsettled waves surged skyward, as if invisible hands had stirred monstrous swells from the water.

A towering wave rose over ten meters high, lifting its massive head before crashing down toward Xie Qingling, intent on devouring the tiny human.

The wave brought a suffocating pressure. In comparison, Xie Qingling’s Spirit User form, indistinguishable from a mortal’s, seemed so insignificant against the colossal surge that she would vanish like a speck of dust in the riverbed.

But before it could descend, another wave erupted, intercepting the first and slamming it back into the river.

[Shui Yong attempts to wrest control of the river from the River God. The River God and Shui Yong give chase and contend. Enraged, the River God decides to punish the insolent human.]

[He vows to divert the river, unleash floods, topple homes, and drown crops. Wherever the river flows, no life shall remaincorpses will float, and the land will be barren.]

As the voice in Xie Qingling’s mind faded, the river split in two.

One half flowed calmly as ever, while the other churned wildly, tilting toward the bank where Xie Qingling stood. The wave blotted out the sky, like a beast ready to devour all.

Xie Qingling slapped the Shrine and shouted, “Fang Shen, stop Him!”

In that instant, an earthen wall sprang from the ground.

The wall precisely blocked the oncoming surge, forcing the wave back into the river channel.

The wave crashed against the shore again, relentless, determined to breach the barrier.

Yet it failed once more.

As the wave rose an inch, the wall reinforced itself a foot.

For every demonic advance, the righteous path rises higher.

Then, the river changed course, no longer winding around the green mountains but turning toward another direction.

There lay acres of farmland, rice stalks bowing with heavy grains ready for harvest in the golden autumn, soon to fill farmers’ granaries. But if the flood swept through, all hopes of bounty would be drowned.

Fang Shen pursued, and wherever the river flowed, dams rose along the banks, confining the waters and preventing disaster.

After a fierce chase, the river was forced back to its original bed, immobilized once more.

The River God was restrained by Shui Yong and Fang Shen.

Though He had enjoyed Incense Offerings and Sacrifice from the human realm for thirty years, He appeared powerless against these two deities who had existed since ancient times.

The river seemed to return to calm.

Moonlight shimmered on the water’s surface, casting rippling reflections through the hazy mist, creating a gentle yet deceptive illusion.

Deceitful humans, dishonorable humans, humans who bring allies to a fightyou have thoroughly enraged the River God.

He has decided to come ashore personally to teach you shameless, arrogant, ignorant humans a lesson.

The water lapping against the shore was the sound of His footsteps; the riverside reeds bowing low were trampled under His tread.

He is coming.

The River God was coming ashore.

Xie Qingling shouted, “Light the lamp!”

Ling Fang ignited the lamp before hima bean-sized flame instantly sprang from the wick, flickering with an orange glow in the darkness.

The Immortal Slaughtering Formation activated, the drawn symbols radiating brilliance, shimmering vividly in the night.

Through sparse grass and empty woods, a deity descends. Vaguely visible, a spectral lamp glimmers, revealing a peach-blossom face.
