Chapter 7

9:00 PM.

On Sunday evenings, other clubs usually held gatherings or activities, so the dance team ended their training half an hour early.

Dong Jia was a diligent practitioner and typically the last to leave the dance studio, and today was no exception.

9:20 PM.

Dong Jia packed her bag, turned off the lights, and walked out of the classroom.

Ever since the Mountain Goblin appeared, Dong Jia had developed the habit of holding onto the stair railing as she walked.

She counted the steps subconsciously while descending.

The dance studio was on the fourth floor. Dong Jia had been using these stairs for four years and knew the number of steps by heart.

As she counted, something felt off.

13. Steps?

That couldn’t be right. It should be 12 steps.

She continued downward, counting again.

Still 13 steps.

Dong Jia’s face turned pale.

Having had some exposure to that mysterious world, Dong Jia, as an ordinary person, was far more sensitive to such anomalies than others.

Her face white as a sheet, she hurried down the stairs. The clattering of her footsteps echoed in the empty stairwell, the world so quiet it seemed only her footsteps and the frantic beating of her heart remained.

Thump, thump…

Her heart had never raced so fast or so loudly.

Leaning against the railing, Dong Jia couldn’t tell whether it was sheer terror or the physical exertion from running that caused it.

Gasping for breath, she stared at the “3” sign posted at the stair landing, her face ashen.

If she remembered correctly, she had run countless laps so why was she still trapped between the fourth and third floors?!

Dong Jia was on the verge of tears.

Wait there had been people in the music room on the third floor. She had heard them rehearsing earlier.

The sound of drums, saxophone, and organ pipes still echoed in her ears. They were still there!

Seeing a glimmer of hope, Dong Jia pushed open the fire door and dashed toward the third-floor music room.

She ran so fast she didn’t even notice her shoe falling off.

But when she finally reached the music room and pushed the door open, it was empty!

The saxophone’s mournful, sobbing melody still lingered in her ears, yet the player was nowhere to be seen.

Gradually, even the music faded away.

Had they left? Where did they go? How did they leave?

In this space, it seemed Dong Jia was completely alone.

Frantic, she ran around the circular student activity center but found no one else.

The rehearsal hall empty.

The art studio empty.

The conference room also empty.

Every classroom was vacant!

What kind of monster had she crossed paths with…

Sniffling, Dong Jia, still trembling with fear, thought of her roommate Xie Qingling fearless and gifted with unusual abilities.

But when she took out her phone, true despair set in.

Her phone had no signal!

She couldn’t call Xie Qingling.

The student activity center usually had full bars of reception.

Dong Jia was devastated.

Some force was interfering, severing all her connections to the outside world.

She was trapped here, with no way out.

Just as Dong Jia was about to break down in tears, her previously signal-less phone suddenly rang.

Caller ID: Xie Qingling.

Like a drowning person clutching at a floating log, Dong Jia immediately answered, “Qingling, I’m lost.”

“I’m trapped in the Student Activity Center and can’t get out.”

Dong Jia had always been timid, and now her voice trembled as if she were about to cry.

After a moment of silence on the other end of the line, Xie Qingling immediately said, “Wait for me. I’ll come rescue you.”

The Crossroad Ghost dwells by bustling roadsides, seeking out those burdened with sin, luring them onto wrong paths or harvesting their lives through what appear to be accidental collisions. You carry the Bewitching Grain Branch from Waving Mountain – its illusions hold no power over you. However, one failure won’t deter it from completing its plan. You should be grateful this minor spirit doesn’t feed on humans.

It follows behind you, having left its dwelling to trail you all the way to the campus. Your unfortunate companion has become its target. This seems to be part of the Crossroad Ghost’s scheme, though none can tell why it’s so determined to lead you away.

Xie Qingling tore off the tightly wrapped bandage, letting blood drip from her wound. She coated her blade with the crimson blood, then used it to stain a riot fork red. Taking the remaining five packs of salt, this constituted her entire arsenal.

Under the night sky, Xie Qingling charged out of the dormitory with murderous intensity, heading toward the Student Activity Center.

At this hour, most people had returned to their dorm rooms. Having just finished meetings, they needed to collapse on their beds to comfort both body and mind.

The blood-soaked Xie Qingling drew little attention as she quickly arrived at the Student Activity Center entrance.

All the classrooms in the Student Activity Center had their lights off, appearing pitch black. The central circular area resembled a monster’s gaping maw ready to swallow people whole.

Taking a deep breath, Xie Qingling gripped the Bewitching Grain Branch and charged into the Student Activity Center in one determined rush.

As the Crossroad Ghost intended, you step right into the trap it set for you. It hops excitedly around you, its voice urgent and eager: Sister, sister, come with me.

But the indifferent you continue to ignore its calls, focused solely on finding your unfortunate companion. The Bewitching Grain Branch in your hand remains your safeguard against the Crossroad Ghost’s deception – it still cannot pull you into its illusions or lead you elsewhere.

Xie Qingling found Dong Jia at the second-floor stairwell landing.

Pushing open the heavy fire door, the green emergency exit light cast an eerie glow on Xie Qingling’s face, making her appear ghostly in the darkness.

There was no telling what form Xie Qingling had taken in Dong Jia’s eyes, but she let out a piercing scream as if she had seen some terrifying monster.

Dong Jia screamed and tried to flee.

Yet her escape route was actually the wall she had been leaning against. Faced with the obstructing barrier ahead, she remained completely unaware – in Dong Jia’s world, the Crossroad Ghost’s illusion hadn’t been broken yet.

“Jiajia, it’s me. Don’t be afraid, I’m here to take you back.” With blood-covered hands, Xie Qingling forced the Bewitching Grain Branch into Dong Jia’s hands as she circled the wall.

In that instant, the world returned to normal in Dong Jia’s eyes.

No four-legged monster climbing up the stairs, no inescapable prison-like predicament.

Seeing Xie Qingling, Dong Jia immediately burst into loud sobs: “I think something’s been haunting me.”

“I know, it’s here for me.” Xie Qingling broke the Bewitching Grain Branch into two pieces. “Take this, and it won’t be able to deceive you. Go back to the dorm first. I can handle things here alone. I’ll stay and settle this with it by myself.”

Tonight had been far too thrilling.

Dong Jia, still shaken, nodded and grabbed the Bewitching Grain Branch before running off.

The rest was beyond her involvement. The best she could do was flee quickly without holding Xie Qingling back.

Dance practice alone was exhausting enough, and she had expended tremendous energy during her earlier aimless escape. Her legs were now so weak that insisting on staying would only hinder Xie Qingling. To avoid being captured and becoming a burden, Dong Jia ran swiftly.

After Dong Jia left, Xie Qingling tore open a bag of salt and scattered a thin white layer on the stairs and corridors. This salt was meant to make the monster visible.

She had decided to eliminate these lingering Spirits before they entangled more people around her.

Xie Qingling was also petty.

Wasn’t Ling Fang evaluating her?

Then she would use this Crossroad Ghost as a pledge of allegiance.

As she scattered the salt, Xie Qingling mentally rehearsed various scenarios that might unfold.

Facing you armed with a sharp weapon, the timid Crossroad Ghost dares not approach. It now hangs painfully from the second-floor railing, still trying its best to whisper in your ear: Sister, sister, come with me.

It attempts to advance, but fear ultimately halts its steps.

Come? Come my ass.

Xie Qingling tossed the empty salt bag aside, gripping a riot fork in one hand and a fruit knife in the other, her gaze fixed on the corridor railing.

Just as she contemplated whether a thrust of the fork could pierce right through it, the silent hallway echoed with “tap, tap, tap” footsteps.

Xie Qingling turned to look it was Dong Jia returning, still clutching the Bewitching Grain Branch.

“Why are you back? It’s not safe here. I can handle this alone,” Xie Qingling said.

Dong Jia’s face was deathly pale, looking even worse than before.

“Qingling, listen.”

Puzzled, Xie Qingling tilted her head and listened

“Scrape… scrape… scrape…”

“Scrape… scrape…”

An intermittent sound of metal dragging heavily across the floor reverberated through the empty university student activity center, harsh and eerie.

“Scrape… scrape… scrape…”

“Screech…”

The noise grew closer, clearer, and sharper, like a needle piercing through the eardrum straight into the heart, bringing an overwhelming sense of pressure.

Dong Jia was so tense her mouth went dry. She stammered, “Outside… outside there’s… a big one…”

Originally, Dong Jia had already run outside the student activity center, but she had seen the big one.

It was a monster wielding a large cleaver.

Dong Jia couldn’t see it clearly, only catching a vague, shadowy outline.

The monster advanced step by step toward her. Though slow, Dong Jia was nearly paralyzed with fear.

Instinct told her this monster was even more terrifying than the one inside the student activity center!

Driven by primal instinct, she had returned to find Xie Qingling.

At least here, there was someone capable to rely on!

Having just broken free from the Crossroad Ghost’s illusion, her eyes still retained traces lingering between reality and hallucination, allowing her to glimpse an existence she shouldn’t have seen. Poor child, she must have been terrified.

It was a Rakshasa Ghost, newly awakened from chaos, wandering through the night. Ravaged by hunger, it no longer possessed its former might. Freshly roused, it was so feeble it could no longer wield its former Rakshasa ghost blade, instead dragging it along the ground as it moved.

Pacing back and forth, it explored its surroundings with hesitant steps and searching eyes, unable to comprehend why this mortal world had become so unfamiliar. Fortunately, it soon discovered sustenance a Psychic whose spiritual sight had yet to awaken, a rare delicacy. By devouring her flesh and blood, sucking her marrow, it could easily lift that heavy Ghost blade once more to hunt more humans.

Dragging the Rakshasa Blade, it was now approaching you.

Dong Jia asked with a pale face, “Qingling, what should we do?”

“Run!” Xie Qingling immediately broke into a sprint. “Split up! The one outside has nothing to do with you it’s here for me!”

Dong Jia froze, her face turning paler. After a moment’s hesitation, she fled in another direction.

The Crossroad Ghost hanging upside down from the railing clung to your back, enduring the pain from being wounded by Spirit blood, letting out a piercing shriek.

It pressed close to your ear and whispered softly: Sister, sister, come with me. The Rakshasa Ghost is already behind you. Come with me, enter my illusion I can help you escape.
