Chapter 65

After the meeting ended.

Everyone stood up, began packing their things, and left the office one after another.

Ye Anran glanced at Xie Qingling beside her, leaned in discreetly, and whispered to her, “This rule is so outdated. How are people who married walls, paintings, or 2D characters supposed to feel? I guarantee if other cities’ special incident departments knew we had such a bizarre work regulation, they’d definitely laugh at us. This rule makes it sound like our department has some kind of history – the gossipers would definitely get curious.”

Xie Qingling also whispered back, “I don’t think so. They’d probably just give the person who made this rule a second glance. What does it have to do with us?”

Ling Fang, having organized his documents, glanced in their direction.

The two immediately straightened up, sat properly, and stopped their whispering.

Xie Qingling said loudly, “They would definitely think that the person who made this rule is far-sighted, visionary, quick-witted, and beyond ordinary people’s capabilities.”

Ling Fang: “…”

He didn’t know if Xie Qingling had properly reflected while writing her self-criticism, but her vocabulary for flattery was certainly growing day by day.

Ling Fang completely ignored her remarks, acting as if he hadn’t heard anything. He casually picked up Blood Oath from the table and said to Xie Qingling, “I’ll return Blood Oath to you in a couple of days. For now, you can pick some suitable weapons from the Weaponry to use.”

“Yes, Director.”

Two days later, Ling Fang indeed returned the modified Blood Oath to Xie Qingling right on time.

The current Blood Oath was both smaller in size and shorter in length than before.

Its length had been reduced to about thirty centimeters, making it more compact and portable.

Ling Fang had made more modifications to the blade shape and body.

Not only had he added blood grooves to the blade, but the hilt had also been changed to a ring-pommel style. The fox’s Core had been smoothly cut by some method unknown and embedded into it.

The deep, mesmerizing, beautiful blue Core made these short blades look even more exquisite.

Xie Qingling tested them in her hands – the blades were lightweight and comfortable to hold.

Xie Qingling asked, “Director, why has Blood Oath become so small?”

If the previous Blood Oath could be called short blades, the current ones were more like slightly long daggers.

Ling Fang said, “When I first gave you Blood Oath, I didn’t understand you well enough yet.”

“Huh?”

“The original Blood Oath was forty-five centimeters long. The intention was to extend your reach through the weapon, creating distance between you and your opponent, giving you space for blocking and defense. But…” Ling Fang suppressed the urge to frown, “You simply don’t like defending, you only prefer attacking. Since that’s the case, I made it more suited to your usage habits, making you more concealed and agile when attacking. Anyway, you’re not afraid of death, so just charge ahead.”

Xie Qingling: “…”

She wanted to refute something.

But upon careful thought, what he said seemed quite reasonable.

So Xie Qingling chose to remain silent.

Ling Fang continued, “I’ve fixed the fox’s Core to your weapon through a curse technique. You can use one of its Mystical Powers, which I’ve named ‘Hidden Breath.’ You can test its effectswhen using it, just silently recite the name in your mind.”

Xie Qingling held Blood Oath in her hand, silently recited “Hidden Breath,” and then was astonished to discover that her body had vanished!

“This fox Core has the effect of Invisibility,” Ling Fang’s voice carried a hint of laughter. “Though calling it Invisibility isn’t entirely accuratebesides physical concealment, it also hides your aura. So this ability not only makes you invisible to human eyes but also to spirits and ghosts alike.”

This skill was absolutely amazing!

Xie Qingling canceled the Invisibility state, revealing her body once more.

She said, “Director, you’re incredible to be able to create such curse techniques.”

“This wasn’t created by my curse techniqueit comes from the fox’s Core.”

Ling Fang explained, “It had burned off its tail and could completely disguise itself as human. In terms of camouflage, it had reached perfection, so this is an ability it cultivated itself. I merely used a curse technique to embed its Core into your weapon.”

“However, you need to be careful. This Core isn’t completeits Cultivation is damaged. The ‘Hidden Breath’ state can’t be maintained indefinitely. I don’t know the exact duration, so you’ll need to test it yourself. But one thing’s certainthe moment you launch an attack, the disguise will break.”

After hearing Ling Fang’s explanation, Xie Qingling nodded and said, “Okay, I understand.”

“Go about your business if there’s nothing else,” Ling Fang said. “Do your work well.”

“Yes, Director.” Xie Qingling left in high spirits.

Blood Oath had become much smaller in size. Xie Qingling added a strap around her waist, allowing her to carry Blood Oath conveniently at her hipneither conspicuous nor cumbersome, making it extremely practical to use.

Xie Qingling was utterly satisfied.

June arrived with the sun blazing like a fiery umbrella.

Xie Qingling’s biological clock had been trained to perfectionshe woke up promptly at eight, first offering incense at the Shrine as usual before having breakfast.

The weather was quite hot, so she prepared herself some frozen yogurt mixed with cereal. As she ate, she checked the unread messages in her phone’s group chat.

【Dong Jia: Qingling! Lvlv! Happy Children’s Day!!!】

【Dong Jia: @Jiang Lvlv @Xie Qingling Do you two have any time off? Want to hang out together?】

【Jiang Lvlv: Burst into tears, already an adult, don’t know what Children’s Day means, no time off, don’t @ me】

【Xie Qingling: No time off, don’t @ me】

【Dong Jia: Aaaah, so sad. I was thinking of taking some time off to celebrate Children’s Day, but looks like that’s not happening now】

【Dong Jia: Remember last time I went out with Qingling was to see my goddess’s dance drama. Ah, now my goddess has left the stage, and you’re all busy too. Time flies so fast, so much sadness】

【Jiang Lvlv: No room for sadness in the adult world! Happy Children’s Day little ones! Big sis is off to work, charging toward that money!】

【Dong Jia: Charge ahead!!】

Children’s Day, huh…

Since graduating from elementary school, Xie Qingling had never celebrated Children’s Day again. Her memories of the holiday had become quite distant, and she didn’t have particularly strong feelings about it anymore.

Among children, she had been considered precocious. In kindergarten groups, she always took on the role of a little adult. Every Children’s Day, she would voluntarily help the kindergarten director organize activities and manage the other children.

So compared to memories of playing during Children’s Day celebrations, her memories of being an order maintainer were actually more numerous.

Time to go to work.

Xie Qingling put away her phone, stopped reminiscing, and arrived at the office on time.

In the lobby on the first floor, besides her, Yu Wei was also present.

“Happy Children’s Day to us big kids.” Xie Qingling greeted him with a smile.

Yu Wei smiled back and nodded in acknowledgment but didn’t speak. After a moment, he came over and patted Xie Qingling’s shoulder, saying, “The department head asked me to patrol with you today.”

“Huh?” Xie Qingling turned around, surprised. “Both of us together?”

Regular patrol assignments rarely involved two people working together.

Of course, except when Xie Qingling first joined the department. Back then, she needed senior members to guide her through work procedures.

But now she was fully capable of handling things independently – one person was sufficient for patrol duties.

“Yes, both of us,” Yu Wei explained. “The place we’re going to is a school where a special incident occurred before. There are many teachers and children at the school, and the impact was extremely severe – it caused quite a stir at the time. Although we set up Anchor Points after resolving the situation, today is special, so both of us need to go to the scene to verify everything.”

Today is special?

“…Because of Children’s Day?”

Yu Wei nodded. “Yes. The troublemaker back then was a Child Spirit. It emerges on Children’s Day to look for playmates.”

When a Child Spirit looks for playmates, it’s not like normal children playing at each other’s houses or doing homework together – that kind of pure friendship between children.

This kind costs lives.

“Alright, let’s head out then,” Xie Qingling said.

After gathering their tools, the two set off for Future City Guangming Elementary School.

Future City Guangming Elementary School was the largest elementary school in Future City, with over three thousand enrolled students.

The school had five teaching buildings, plus public facilities like sports grounds and rubber running tracks, covering a very extensive area.

Today, regular classes wouldn’t be held, but the school would organize some recreational activities for children and parents.

9:30 AM.

The spacious school grounds were bustling with noise and excitement. Children’s laughter could be heard from far away, and the air was filled with a lively atmosphere.

Yu Wei leaned against the railing at the school gate while looking inside.

He raised his voice so Xie Qingling could hear him clearly: “Because the area is large and crowded, we’ve set up Anchor Points in all four directions – east, west, south, and north. You’ll take the southwest sector, I’ll handle the northeast sector. After we finish checking, let’s meet back at the school gate.”

Xie Qingling nodded, “Alright.”

After the assignments were distributed, the two separated.

Xie Qingling searched along the southwestern directions and found the concealed Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Clay Figurines near the school auditorium and library respectively.

She checked them and found no abnormalities. However, a few mischievous children had scribbled on the Ksitigarbha figurine near the auditorium with colored crayons.

They had drawn a small mustache on Ksitigarbha, added earrings to the earlobes, and covered the body with colors, as if dressing the bare-chested upper half in a colorful bodysuit.

It was unclear how they had managed to find such a hidden spot.

Xie Qingling’s face darkened as she wiped away the colorful pigments with her hand, then glanced around at the surroundings.

She stood before the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Clay Figurine behind the auditorium, alone, with only the laughter of children echoing in the air.

But…

[The ghoul infant dragging its umbilical cord, crawling in search of its mother; the child ghoul unable to distinguish right from wrong, seeking a playmateboth gradually approached this place. Hearing the joyful laughter from the campus, they cast envious glances.]

[Envy, jealousy, longingtormented by desires they could never fulfill, they resolved to find a satisfactory playmate today.]

[The ghoul infant seeks its mother, the child ghoul seeks a companion. If you pause and listen carefully, they cry and laugh, hand in hand, hoping to take away one lucky little friend.]

Xie Qingling’s expression abruptly darkened. She contacted Yu Wei via the earpiece: “Brother Yu, there are ghoulstwo of them. Besides the child ghoul, there’s also a ghoul infant.”

Yu Wei’s voice turned grim. “Deploy the Killing Field directly and wait for me there. I’ll arrive immediately.”

Xie Qingling acknowledged and immediately spread the Killing Field.

Anchor Points had been pre-set in the school, allowing direct targeting of ghouls. Thus, deploying the Killing Field here would not ensnare ordinary people.

Besides surveillance and deterrence, the Anchor Points also served to quickly lock onto combat targets.

As soon as the Killing Field was deployed, Xie Qingling spotted a ghoul infant crawling on the ground, its umbilical cord still uncut, and a toddling child ghoul.

They occasionally touched hands, as if holding each other, sometimes one laughing while the other cried, then abruptly both crying or laughing together.

The two little ghouls crawled together from behind the auditorium toward the front.

There, a group of children was playing a treasure hunt game, their laughter guiding the way.

The child ghoul stumbled along, while the ghoul infant crawled urgently.

Xie Qingling frowned deeply and took out the Ghost Binding Banner, attempting to capture them both.

Unexpectedly, the banner only captured the child ghoul, leaving the umbilical-dragging ghoul infant unaffected.

It seemed that despite its young age, this ghoul infant, having died in the womb, harbored intense resentment and possessed far greater power than the child ghoul.

Yu Wei arrived just in time.

Seeing the ghoul infant, he fell silent.

The large blade in his hand froze momentarily, ceasing its swing.

The ghost infant, having just lost its playmate, was wailing uncontrollably.

Xie Qingling suddenly remembered that Yu Wei had a young daughter. As a father, he probably found it difficult to harm a small child.

“Let me handle this.”

Xie Qingling stepped forward in Yu Wei’s place, raising her blade.

The ghost infant crawled toward Xie Qingling while crying, its umbilical cord leaving a trail of bloodstains. Everywhere it touched emitted black smoke, severely corroded by its presence.

However, just as the ghost infant was about to reach Xie Qingling, it discovered that the person who had been charging toward it had suddenly vanished without a trace.

Gone?

The ghost infant paused in confusion. Its brain hadn’t fully developed yetit operated purely on instinct and couldn’t engage in complex reasoning. Before it could comprehend what had happened, Xie Qingling materialized behind it.

She dodged the ghost infant’s reaching hands while simultaneously swinging her blade downward.

The modified Blood Oath indeed felt more comfortable to wield now.

With a single slash,

everything ended as if nothing had ever occurred.

Xie Qingling sheathed Blood Oath and withdrew the Killing Field. The cheerful laughter of children once again reached her ears.

They were celebrating the annual Children’s Day, eating candy, holding colorful balloons, and chasing each other with friends, completely unaware that two pairs of intensely envious eyes had been watching them longingly, eager to join their games.

Immersed in the festive joy, the children remained oblivious to any danger. A few reckless kids nearly bumped into Yu Wei during their play.

Rather than getting angry, Yu Wei carefully avoided them and made his way to Xie Qingling’s side.

“I’m sorry,” he said with self-reproach. “I wasn’t in good form today. You must think I’m ridiculous.”

“Maybe I should ask the department head for a self-criticism form when we get back,” Yu Wei added.

Xie Qingling gave him a deep look.

“Brother Yu,” she said meaningfully, “I don’t think you need to rush that. If you keep working missions with me, you’ll get your self-criticism eventually.”

Yu Wei: “…”

“If the department head heard you say that, you’d probably be writing one right now.”
