Chapter 59
Donghu Villa District was a residential community built around an artificially created lake.
Those living here were all distinguished figures from various sectors of societyeither wealthy or influential.
For Xia Ke’er to afford a villa here just two years after rising to fame, it seemed her devotion to the fox spirit Xia Tian had brought her substantial benefits. Beyond fame, there were tangible financial gains too. The combination of intangible and tangible rewards was immeasurable, which explained why Xia Ke’er was unwilling to let Xia Tian leave. An ordinary person likely couldn’t accumulate such wealth in several lifetimes.
Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou got off their motorcycle, carrying a silver case as they hurried toward the entrance of Donghu Villa District.
The villas were sparsely distributed with considerable distance between each unit. It would take some time to walk from the entrance to Building 23B.
The security guard checked their credentials and granted them access.
The guard kindly reminded them, “Motorcycles aren’t allowed inside, but there are community shuttle vehicles available. You can take oneit’ll get you there quickly.”
Xie Qingling thanked him, then she and Shen Huaizhou proceeded to the shuttle stop.
The shuttle arrived promptly. There were few passengers aboardonly Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou.
The driver glanced curiously at their unusual attire throughout the ride but didn’t inquire further. He simply confirmed their drop-off location before driving to Building 23B.
After five minutes of winding through the community roads, they finally reached Building 23B.
It was a three-story standalone villa designed in a Chinese garden style, featuring white walls and dark tiles. A heavy ebony door blocked prying eyes from outside.
With Xia Ke’er’s whereabouts unknown, Xie Qingling couldn’t determine if she was home. Initially considering sneaking into the villa, she abandoned the idea upon noticing the ubiquitous surveillance cameras.
Better not create extra work for the Logistics Department.
“You knock on the door,” Xie Qingling told Shen Huaizhou. “If no one answers, we’ll climb in through a window.”
She issued the command so naturally that Shen Huaizhou glanced down at her before stepping forward and obediently knocking.
After a moment, a woman around forty to fifty years old came to open the door. Her hair was meticulously coiled at the nape of her neck, and she wore a white cotton outfit with a gray apronclearly in the middle of chores.
She peered out warily through a narrow crack in the ebony door, her head cautiously poking through the opening.
“Who are you looking for?” she asked, her voice filled with caution and wariness.
Hearing this, Xie Qingling frowned slightly and pulled Shen Huaizhou behind her, worried his deep, rough voice might startle the woman.
“Hello, sister. We’re here to see Ke’er,” Xie Qingling said with an innocent smile, her words sweet as she cheerfully addressed the woman as “sister.” “We’re from the dance troupe, here to rehearse a new dance drama with her.”
“The dance troupe people…” Hearing her say this, the housekeeper immediately breathed a sigh of relief, though she still didn’t open the door completely, keeping it slightly ajar. “You’ve come at a bad timeKe’er isn’t home today. You’d better come back tomorrow.”
Just as she was about to close the door, Xie Qingling blocked it with her hand and smiled, “It’s fine that she’s not here. We have props that need to be delivered directly to her. Sister, could you let us bring them inside? We’ll leave right after delivering them.”
Xie Qingling raised the silver case in her hand, indicating these were the props meant for Xia Ke’er.
“Well… then come in.” The housekeeper opened the door and let them enter.
After leading Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou to the reception hall, the housekeeper said, “Please have a seat. I’ll get you some water.”
With that, she went into the kitchen.
Xie Qingling immediately lowered her voice and said, “Watch for my signal later. If necessary, create an Illusionary Realm for her so we can search this villa while she’s distracted.”
It didn’t matter that they hadn’t found Xia Ke’erthey could still look for whatever object she was worshipping to figure out what exactly it was.
Since it involved worship, there must be an altar with offerings, daily cleaning, and incense burningthere would definitely be traces left behind.
Shen Huaizhou nodded.
Soon, the housekeeper returned with two glasses of juice, placing them before Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou. “Here, have something to drink. It’s so hot todayyou must be sweltering. I added ice cubes to help cool you down.”
The housekeeper appeared to be quite considerate.
Xie Qingling pretended to take a sip, then unexpectedly started making small talk with the housekeeper.
She said, “Sister, you’re the housekeeper here, right? You look a bit pale, almost like you’re scared? Don’t be nervouswe’re not bad people. If you’re having any problems, you can tell me. Maybe I can help you.”
Having her thoughts exposed so directly made the housekeeper’s face turn even more ashen. Her eyes darted around nervously as she stammered, “D-don’t mind me. It’s not about you specifically, I’m just… I’m just a little scared!”
“…Scared?” Xie Qingling glanced around the bright, clean villa and casually asked, “Is there something wrong with this villa?”
“Oh!” The housekeeper jumped at her words, nearly leaping up. Her eyes welled with tears as she looked at Xie Qingling, as if she’d finally met someone who understood.
“You’ve hit the nail on the head!” The housekeeper’s eyes darted around nervously, her face full of wariness and fear. “Even though I haven’t been here long, I can tell this house is… strange.”
“I didn’t used to work here,” she continued, slapping her thigh in regret. “I only came because I heard the pay was good. But I never expected… If I’d known it would be like this, I wouldn’t have come even for double the money! Once I get this month’s salary, I’m quittingI’m done with this place!”
“Oh? No wonder I’ve never seen you before! I often visit Ke’er, but you looked a bit unfamiliarturns out you’re new!” Xie Qingling looked surprised and asked, “What’s going on with this house? Tell me quickly.”
Shen Huaizhou raised an eyebrow, crossed his arms, and silently listened to Xie Qingling’s nonsense.
“This place… it’s a haunted house,” the housekeeper said, sweating nervously. But since she wasn’t alone in the housewith two young people presentshe felt a bit braver and dared to speak up. “The woman who hired me is a single actress who keeps to herself and lives alone. But several times, I’ve woken up in the middle of the night and heard voices coming from the master bedrooma man’s voice!”
“At first, I thought she was just being wild, having some secret affair for thrills. But that’s her private life, so I wouldn’t say anything about it. Over time, though, I realized something was wrong. Because this house only shows signs of the woman living hereno matter what man it is, he’d need to wear clothes, eat meals, right? But there’s nothing! It’s like he doesn’t exist at all!”
The housekeeper’s face gradually took on a terrified expression as she continued, “And that’s not the only strange thing. I only noticed after working here for a while… the raw meat in the fridge often disappears without a trace. Especially in the last two monthsbloody chunks of meat, bought just the day before, gone the next morning! But what’s even scarier is…”
“The lady told me to buy live chickens to make chicken soup, but… but before I could even cook it, the chicken vanished. I searched everywhere and only found a pile of bloody feathers!”
“The next day, she asked me to buy another chicken, and it disappeared again! I still only found a pile of bloody feathers. That chicken… that chicken was eaten alivefeathers, blood and allby that monster!” The housekeeper’s face had turned pale by now.
Xie Qingling patted her hand comfortingly and said, “Don’t worry, maybe you’re overthinking it. It could just be thieves. Don’t scare yourselfonce you quit this job and find a reliable employer, everything will be fine.”
But the housekeeper shook her head and said, “It’s not just that. This house has too many secrets. Take the third floor, for examplethe lady forbids me from cleaning up there. Everything must be done by her personally.”
“Last month, I went to see a Spirit medium. He said my Human Qi has diminished, like I’ve attracted something unclean. I figured, you need to be alive to spend the money you earn. I heard the previous housekeepers all developed health problems after a few months and then left. I… I’m really scared.”
Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou exchanged glances, understanding dawning in both their eyes.
“Ah, I’ve said too much,” the housekeeper wiped the sweat from her face and forced a dry laugh.
Seeing the nanny’s anxious and uneasy state, with dark circles under her eyes, Xie Qingling understood immediately. She knew the nanny must have been too frightened to sleep at night these past days, constantly on edge.
After some thought, Xie Qingling decided it wasn’t right to keep covering things up. She said, “Auntie, I know someone who’s very effective at dealing with spiritual matters. Why not let her treat you? Go to this address to find her – I guarantee one dose of medicine will fix everything.”
As she spoke, Xie Qingling recited the address of Office 221 on Central Street.
The nanny, clutching the address like a lifeline, exclaimed ecstatically, “Really effective? Then I… I’ll find time to go. No, I’ll go now, right away!”
With that, the nanny stood up, picked up the cups and said, “Since you’re not drinking, I’ll take these away. I’ll find time to visit her later.” Then she hurried into the kitchen to clean the dishes.
Shen Huaizhou asked quietly, “Is this spiritual expert you know called Ye Anran?”
“Correct,” Xie Qingling laughed. “Let Senior Anran treat her, then hypnotize her. Otherwise, when will this fearful life ever end? When people think they’re sick, their bodies will eventually develop real problems, don’t you think?”
Shen Huaizhou remained silent.
Hair transplant center yesterday, spiritual expert today – Office 221 on Central Street would probably soon become part of urban legends.
Just then, a terrified scream came from the kitchen. Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou immediately rushed over to find the nanny pale-faced, collapsed on the floor.
Her trembling finger pointed in one direction as she murmured, “The chicken… the live chicken I bought is gone again!”
In the kitchen, only an empty chicken cage remained quietly in place.
Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou exchanged glances, both almost unable to resist reaching for their weapons. But the next moment, Xie Qingling lowered her eyes and gave Shen Huaizhou a warning look.
She told the nanny, “Auntie, I just remembered we have some unfinished business. We should be going now. Thank you for your hospitality – I’ll treat you to coffee next time.”
The distraught nanny grew even paler upon hearing they were leaving.
“I… I want to leave too! I need to see the expert!” the nanny said.
“Don’t rush,” Xie Qingling soothed. “The expert isn’t available every day. She happens to be out today – we’ll go when she’s free. Unfortunately, she’s not available today.”
The nanny looked utterly devastated, her entire body trembling.
Fortunately, having developed strong nerves from working here, she managed to hold herself together. Wiping sweat from her brow, she stood up bravely and said, “Alright then, I won’t see you out.”
After leaving Xia Ke’er’s villa, Shen Huaizhou said with a grim expression, “Drinking blood raw, craving it from the soul – this shows that beast’s cultivation is incomplete, never truly completed the metamorphosis to human form. With its animal nature still intact, remaining in human society will inevitably lead to disaster.”
“Are you really planning to leave?” he asked, lowering his head.
“Of course not,” Xie Qingling said. “If we don’t execute a Turning-back Thrust and catch that sly fox red-handed, how would it ever tell the truth?”
“I thought the same.”
The two immediately turned around and circled to the back of Xia Ke’er’s villa.
“This time, we’ll have to climb in through the window,” Xie Qingling pointed at the second floor. “The third floor is probably the worship areanot frequently used, and the housekeeper isn’t allowed up there. The second floor should be the master bedroom. Let’s head there first.”
“Although there are many cameras here and we’ll likely be recorded… I think the Logistics Department will forgive us for adding this little extra work for them.”
After mentally securing the Logistics Department’s forgiveness, Xie Qingling took the lead, using the overhanging branches of a tree to leap onto the second-floor balcony.
Shen Huaizhou followed closely behind.
Since it was daytime, the French windows on the second floor were open. The two slipped inside quietly without encountering any obstacles.
The corridor was carpeted thickly, muffling their footsteps completely. All was silent.
Instead, a strange, gulping sound came from the master suite.
Frowning, Xie Qingling pushed the bedroom door open softly and followed the sound quietly to its source
It was the bathroom inside the master suite.
Through the frosted glass, a white figure could be seen sitting in the bathtub, clutching an object and devouring it frantically.
Whether too engrossed or having lost all reason, it didn’t notice the shadow slowly approaching.
Hearing the spine-chilling sounds of tearing and chewing, Xie Qingling strode into the bathroom and clamped a hand on the white figure’s shoulder, forcing it to turn around.
But to her surprise, when it turned, it was Xia Ke’er’s delicate face that met her eyes.
In her hands, she held a half-eaten chicken, its blood staining her skirt. Her white teeth were streaked with bloody shreds of meat, and chicken feathers stuck to the corners of her moutha grotesque and horrifying sight.
