Chapter 56
Under the night sky, the city’s neon lights flickered and shifted incessantly. Xie Qingling glanced back, feeling the oppressive darkness of the night, with no trace of the moon in the skyas if a pair of enormous, peering eyes hung high above.
The motorcycle continued forward, approaching the intersection Dai Xingyu had mentioned.
Xie Qingling asked quietly, “What is it that’s following us?”
“I don’t know,” Dai Xingyu replied. “Either it’s a master at concealing their presence, or… it’s a human. Either way, it’s not easy to deal with.”
The Herdsman’s talent was effective against Ghouls, but when it came to humans, it wasn’t as useful as electronic surveillance devices.
That’s why Dai Xingyu was most afraid of humans.
Yet, the one following them had a significant chance of being human, which made the situation particularly tricky.
Xie Qingling said nothing.
Human or not, they needed to eliminate one possibility first.
And Ghouls were the easiest to rule out.
Xie Qingling whispered to Dai Xingyu, “Deploy the Killing Field first.”
If an unmanifested Ghoul was following them, deploying the Killing Field would force it to materialize within. As long as no fight broke out, the unaware pedestrians who hadn’t been cleared in time wouldn’t be endangered.
Dai Xingyu nodded.
He took out his Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Clay Figurine and murmured softly, “With your eyes, see what I see.”
At the same time, Xie Qingling pulled the motorcycle over to the side of the road.
At that moment, everything around them, including the oblivious crowd, had been enveloped by the Killing Field, completely unaware.
…No Ghoul appeared.
The thing following them seemed to really be human.
Xie Qingling looked back, calmly scanning the surroundings and the people.
In her field of vision, she could see a man smoking, slowly coming to a stop at the intersection while talking on the phone.
A young couple, holding hands, glanced around before ducking into a dark spot, nestling close like lovebirds, whispering intimately to each other.
Two taxis were parked by the roadside. One had just dropped off a passenger and now sat with its “For Hire” sign lit, not moving.
The other taxi’s situation was unclear; it remained parked in place.
Its windows were tightly shut, the interior dimly lit, making it impossible to see if anyone was inside.
Dai Xingyu’s expression turned grim as he said, “It seems it might just be an ordinary human.”
But why would a human be following them?
“Find him,” Xie Qingling instructed.
Xie Qingling approached the taxi with the closed windows and no movement, knocking on the window.
The window rolled down quickly, revealing the driver’s chubby, round face. He smiled amiably and asked, “Need a ride, miss?”
The seat was empty.
Xie Qingling gave an inconspicuous glance before withdrawing her gaze and shaking her head. “No, thanks.”
The round-faced driver said nothing more.
Xie Qingling repeated the process, knocking on the window of the taxi with the “For Hire” sign lit. The window also rolled down promptly, revealing a thin, dark-skinned driver who looked at her and said, “Fifteen yuan starting fare, metered, no haggling.”
Inside the taxi, aside from the driver, there was no one else.
Xie Qingling looked slightly disappointed and replied, “Not taking the ride.”
Hearing this, the dark-faced driver’s expression turned even darker. He directly rolled up the window, and his cursing voice could be heard: “If you’re not taking the ride, why did you knock? Are you sick? Wasting my time!”
By now, Dai Xingyu had also finished checking the other three suspicious individuals.
The young couple flirting in the dark corner, and the man squatting on the ground making a phone call with a pained, worried expression.
Dai Xingyu shook his head and said, “None of them seem like it.”
Xie Qingling said, “Actually, I have a method.”
“What method?”
“I’m just afraid you won’t be willing to do it if I say it.”
A bad premonition arose in Dai Xingyu’s heart.
Xie Qingling murmured, “Forget it. Although it might succeed, the director would scold us to death if he found out.”
“Then let’s try another method, a safer and more reliable one.” Xie Qingling suddenly drew Blood Oath, holding it in her hand, and walked toward the first taxi they had questioned.
She knocked on the window again, this time approaching the driver’s side.
When the driver rolled down the window, Blood Oath was pressed directly against his neck.
She was enveloped in the cool night mist, carrying a chilling killing intent.
With the cold blade pressed against the round-faced driver’s neck, Xie Qingling said with a cold expression, “Surrender. You’ve already revealed your fox tail.”
Dai Xingyu, who had been waiting to see what clever trick she had, instantly paled, cold sweat dripping down his forehead.
Threatening someone by holding a blade to their neckand she called this safe and reliable?
He really had no idea what had been going through Xie Qingling’s mind just now.
At this moment, Dai Xingyu felt it was better not to ask what the other method was. Xie Qingling was too reckless.
Fortunately, she hadn’t made him do it, or the director would definitely have scolded them to death.
Was she trying to bluff the stalker into revealing themselves?
If her bluff worked, it would be fine, but if it didn’t, their department would surely face complaints…
Why did he feel that going on missions with Xie Qingling was so dangerous?
He understood nowXie Qingling was danger itself.
Just as Dai Xingyu was lost in these thoughts, he saw the round-faced driver, whose neck was pressed by Xie Qingling’s blade, lose his amiable smile. His expression changed, instantly turning grim.
He narrowed his eyes and asked, “How did you find me out?”
Dai Xingyu: “…” This actually worked?
If this was a bluff, then Xie Qingling’s luck was just too good.
Or had she already noticed some clues?
Regardless of the truth, Dai Xingyu knew that when working with Xie Qingling, all he needed to do was cooperate.
Using his brain wasn’t his strong suitlet the director deal with this headache-inducing teammate.
Dai Xingyu retracted the Killing Field and walked over to assist Xie Qingling in subduing the round-faced driver. Although he had a baby face, he was still a man. He hoped the driver wouldn’t make things difficult.
“Get out of the car and come with us,” Xie Qingling said in a low voice.
The driver stiffly got out of the car and followed Xie Qingling and Dai Xingyu to a secluded, deserted path.
Here, in the open and empty space, it would be much easier to talkwhether with words or with fists.
This round-faced driver was a man Xie Qingling had never seen beforea completely unfamiliar face.
He was the kind of utterly ordinary, unremarkable taxi driver who would blend into a crowd and never be found again. Anyone who saw him just once would quickly forget his features.
If not for Xie Qingling’s intuition telling her his behavior didn’t quite match that of a typical money-obsessed driver, she wouldn’t have grown suspicious and singled him out so quickly.
For a taxi driver, time was moneyopportunities to pick up passengers were rarely passed up with such calm indifference.
As it turned out, Xie Qingling’s half-guess, half-certainty had been correct.
She hadn’t wasted much time exposing this tracker disguised as a driver.
Accustomed to dealing with Ghouls, this was the first time she’d held a blade to a human’s throatyet her hand didn’t tremble in the slightest.
Keeping the knife pressed firmly against the round-faced man’s neck, she asked in a low voice, “Who sent you to follow us? Was it Xia Ke’er? What’s your purpose?”
The round-faced man’s expression briefly froze, then his eyes filled with sorrow. “It wasn’t her,” he said. “It was me.”
“You? Explain yourselfthe reason and the cause. Don’t make me resort to force.”Xie Qingling delivered a fierce kick to a tree along the roadside green belt. With a rustling sound, leaves cascaded down, a testament to the sheer force and ruthless determination behind it.
Menacing, fierce-eyed, merciless, and unyielding.
Both Dai Xingyu and the round-faced man fell silent.
After a moment, the round-faced man let out a deep sigh, his expression caught between amusement and resignation.
When he spoke again, his voice had changed.
The warm, steady tone of a middle-aged man had shifted into that of a young manclear and elegant, carrying an ethereal quality.
“To be honest,” he said, “I came specifically to find you, Xie Qingling.”
“It’s an Illusion!” Dai Xingyu’s expression shifted, and he immediately warned, “He’s not humanhe’s… he’s no good!”
In one swift motion, Xie Qingling drew another blade, gripping it with both hands, ready to strike.
She stood close to the man. If “he” tried any tricks, her Blood Oath dagger could plunge straight into his heart before he had any chance to resist. Her eyes already radiated killing intent.
Yet “he” showed no intention of fighting back.
Upon hearing Dai Xingyu’s warning, he raised both hands in a human gesture of surrender. At the same time, his round face transformed into another visage.
It was a face brimming with Spirit.
Not the kind of charm associated with beauty, but one that evoked the sense of an immortalwreathed in Immortal Qi, something that shouldn’t exist in the mortal realm.
His skin was pale, with a jade-like luster. His features weren’t exceptionally handsome, but his aura was transcendent, like a drop of dew untouched by dustglistening and radiant, like a shining pearl.
Exquisitely elegant.
The most striking feature of this face was his eyes.
Within them lay vertical pupils.
The eyes of a wild beast.
【Having passed the childhood trial, endured the wheel track tribulation, and withstood thunderstorms, the fox cultivating in the mountains finally attained human form, able to walk the mortal world in human shape. Having weathered centuries of storms, it burned off its tail, excelled at concealment arts, practiced wild fox zen among mortals, comprehended human nature, refined human Qi, and now appeared no different from an ordinary human.】
【Foxes worship the moon, seeking recognition upon success. If fortunate enough to meet a destined person, a fox that has passed three trials and burned its tail can shed mortal bones and ascend to divinity.】
“So it’s a fox spirit,” Xie Qingling murmured, then demanded sharply, “What exactly are you trying to achieve by hiding among humans?”
“I mean no harm,” the fox spirit looked at Xie Qingling. “You said if anything happened, I could come find you.”
“So I came,” he said.
She had indeed said that.
However, those words were spoken to Xia Ke’er.
At the time, Xie Qingling thought Xia Ke’er had provoked some monster and thus left her an escape route.
Never did she expect that instead of Xia Ke’er, a fox spirit would show up.
Xie Qingling frowned, unable to discern his true intentions.
“I beg you to save her,” the fox spirit said. “Xia Ke’er… she’s dying, and I can do nothing about it.”
