Chapter 52

“First, I need to clarify that our department has a clear reward and punishment system. Merit will be rewarded, faults will be punished.” Ling Fang glanced meaningfully at Xie Qingling before continuing, “For certain individuals who made mistakes and received punishment, the matter is temporarily put to rest. But deserved rewards will also be given.”

“You can request whatever you want from me, whether it’s weapons or other equipment.” Ling Fang paused briefly, “Though you already possess quite a few mysterious items now, right? Sometimes, having too many tools can become a burden. You only need to find some suitable, handy ones that work for you.”

Xie Qingling actually agreed with this perspective.

But if she didn’t want tools, what else could she ask for?

Xie Qingling froze momentarily, suddenly realizing she could bring up her salary increase request.

However…

Last time she received fifty thousand in salary, and she still hadn’t spent it yet.

Within the department, food, clothing, shelter, and transportation were all provided without cost. Money in hand felt almost like worthless paper. The orphanage renovation wouldn’t cost much either. Even if she sent this month’s entire salary back, next month’s salary would soon be deposited.

“…”

If fifty thousand was already so difficult to spend, a salary increase would probably be equally useless to her.

She never imagined she would ever experience a day when she could “view money as dirt.”

Xie Qingling felt somewhat wistful.

After some thought, she finally had an idea: “Department Head, I’ve decided. My wish is that I don’t want to write…”

“Rewards cannot be used to avoid writing self-criticisms.Ling Fang immediately cut her off, thwarting Xie Qingling’s plan to use her reward to escape writing a reflection.

Xie Qingling: “…”

How ruthless!

“Then I don’t know what I want anymore.”

Ling Fang nodded: “Understood. In that case, I’ll grant you one week of leave.”

Although he disapproved of Xie Qingling’s attempt to feign illness to avoid punishment, since she was genuinely unwell, Ling Fang would still act humanely.

“Take good care of yourself and recuperate properly,” he said.

Upon hearing this, Xie Qingling showed little reaction, feeling her body had mostly recovered and didn’t require special leave.

Others, however, looked envious to the point of tears.

Yu Wei spoke up to remind her: “Qingling, aren’t you going to thank the Department Head? Leave is extremely precious in our department. In all my years here, I only get one day off per year.”

Hearing this, Xie Qingling instantly froze, feeling like this one week used up her entire lifetime’s vacation allowance, and immediately said: “Thank you, Department Head!”

Come to think of it, Yu Wei only getting one day off per year after working all these yearsthat was truly pitiful.

Xie Qingling couldn’t help but feel deep sympathy for him.

“Alright, we can now continue discussing the follow-up arrangements regarding Chai Yuhu,” Ling Fang said.

When it came to professional matters, Ye Anran bravely raised her hand: “Department Head, I think we can simply use hypnosis to erase this portion of his memory.”

The Red Wedding Dress incident had dragged on for quite some time, and Chai Yuhu remained in the office, unable to leave.

Now that the Red Wedding Dress matter was resolved, Chai Yuhu naturally couldn’t stay here any longer.

People had to be released, but how to release them and how to cover it up afterward were routine tasks after every battle.

“This matter will be handled by Ye Anran.” The department’s arrangements for such matters were already well-established, so Ling Fang didn’t waste any words.

“Dai Xingyu is responsible for the post-battle summary. Submit the report to me afterward.”

“Alright, meeting adjourned.”

Upon hearing this, everyone stood up and left the conference table.

Only Ling Fang remained motionless in his seathis curse hadn’t been completely lifted yet, and his lower body was still nearly paralyzed. He was currently sitting in a wheelchair rather than a conference chair.

As everyone left, he made no move, pretending to be deep in thought as he stayed put.

Curse Casters were capable in many ways, but when afflicted by a curse, it was truly troublesome.

“Xie Qingling, your leave starts today.” Ling Fang called out to her retreating back. “You don’t need to come to work today. You’re free to arrange your own time.”

Hearing this, Xie Qingling stopped and glanced back at Ling Fang.

Noticing his rigid, wooden-like posture and the wheelchair he sat in, she immediately understood.

Remembering his generous offer of a week’s leave, Xie Qingling broke into a wide grin and obsequiously walked over to Ling Fang. She pushed his wheelchair toward the large floor-to-ceiling window, chattering as she went: “Department Head, are you unwell too? Is this the curse you mentioned yesterday? I didn’t realize it was this severe. Can you not work today? Actually, we’re quite alikeboth had a rough time yesterday and fell ill. Come on, I’ll take you to get some sun to boost your immunity.”

How many employees were as considerate to their superiors as she was?

Unfortunately, Xie Qingling’s attempt to curry favor failed.

Ling Fang listened calmly and replied, “No, I’m not as unfortunate as you.”

He reasoned logically: “Unlike you, I don’t have to write a self-criticism.”

Xie Qingling: “…”

Suddenly, she lost all desire to be considerate!

She stopped by the window, positioned Ling Fang directly in the sunlighthaving done her due diligenceand left.

Better to go write that self-criticism. At 20,000 words, it was more meaningful than sucking up to the boss.

Ling Fang’s hands weren’t fully functional yet and hadn’t fully recovered, leaving him helpless with the wheelchair.

Meanwhile, Yu Wei and the others had already left.

So…

Ling Fang was left sitting there, bathed in the brilliant, dazzling summer sunlight.

The sun was harsh, and Ling Fang’s dark-colored suit quickly made him feel unbearably hot.

Stiffly slumped in the wheelchair, he resembled a dried salted fish left to bake in the sun.

So hot.

And he couldn’t even turn over.

Immobilized, Ling Fang’s face turned grim.

…Xie Qingling! You did this on purpose!

When Chai Yuhu woke up, he found himself lying on a soft leather sofa.

He was now in a brightly lit villa living room. However, it was furnished like an office, with several desks arranged in a strangely mixed style.

What company would rent a villa for office space? How extravagant!

He glanced around and could only see a man dressed in black, wearing black gloves, sitting by the floor-to-ceiling window, basking in the sun with his eyes narrowed, lost in thought.

It was noon, and the sunlight was intensely bright and scorching. A thin layer of sweat had formed on the black-clad man’s face, yet he remained seated without a word, as if stubbornly enduring something.

Could it be… he was trying to get a tan?

Chai Yuhu walked over and asked, “Hello, may I ask, is this place…”

Where was this?

Why was he here?

Ling Fang said, “You came here on your own.”

“Me? I came here on my own? What did I come here for?” Chai Yuhu was confused.

Following the black-clad man’s words, he tried hard to recall. Though he couldn’t pinpoint a specific reason or motivation, it did seem to be as the man had said.

“Your hair has all fallen out,” Ling Fang glanced at Chai Yuhu’s nearly bald head, where hair was just beginning to grow back. “You came here seeking help.”

Hair fallen out?

Chai Yuhu froze for a moment, and then memories flooded back like a tide.

He reached up and touched his bald head, then couldn’t help but curse, “Damn! I remember now! My hair fell out!”

So…

“Is this a hair transplant center?” Chai Yuhu took a closer look around and suddenly understood.

Ling Fang: “…”

He turned his head with difficulty, looked at Chai Yuhu, and said, “Come push me for a bit, and I’ll tell you the solution to your problem.”

“Oh, okay.” The thought that this was a hair transplant center left Chai Yuhu with mixed feelings.

Who would have thought? After just a few years as a programmer, he had already reached this point.

The career sickle that reaped hair had come far too quickly!

But the man in front of him seemed more like a disabled person than a doctor. He looked more like a charlatancould he really solve his problem?

Chai Yuhu’s mind was in turmoil, wondering if he had been tricked by some shady advertisement into coming here. Would they try to rip him off later?

Finally, Ling Fang moved away from the bright, warm sunlight and felt much more refreshed. He let out a sigh of relief and said to Chai Yuhu, “Our chief physician has already examined you. Your condition isn’t seriousit’s not a pathological hair loss disease. It’s just due to recent work stress triggering a stress response, which caused your hair to fall out. There’s no need for a hair transplant, so you don’t have to waste your money.”

“St… stress response? Hair can have a stress response too?”

Hearing that he didn’t need a transplant, Chai Yuhu felt both relieved and a little sad. He couldn’t help but touch his bare scalp again, thinking how fragile his hair wasnot resilient at all.

“In short, after you go back, take good care of yourself for a while. Eat on time, maintain a regular schedule, and let your body recover. Once your health improves, your hair will naturally grow thick again.”

Chai Yuhu looked troubled. “I’m afraid I can’t do that. It’s too difficult.”

Eating on time was manageable, but keeping a regular schedule? Absolutely not.

His usual work routine was mostly 996, sometimes even 007, and there were still overtime shifts to work!

Chai Yuhu asked urgently, “Do you have any permanent solutions here? Can you directly give me a head full of thick hair? Money isn’t an issueI’m willing to pay any amount!”

Ling Fang gave his bald head a meaningful glance. “Hair transplants usually involve moving hair follicles from densely haired areas to sparse ones. But look at your scalp now… where are the densely haired areas? Sorry, you don’t meet the objective conditions for a transplant.”

“…Damn!” Chai Yuhu broke down.

He never expected that after earning money, he couldn’t keep his hair. Couldn’t even spend his way out of baldness?

The gains and losses in life were just too cruel.

Chai Yuhu, barely over twenty, was already considering a career change.

Being an adult was really hard.

After seeing Chai Yuhu out, Xie Qingling emerged from the kitchen carrying a cup of coffee, which she placed in front of Ling Fang.

“Professional, so professional!” Xie Qingling said with a grin. “I never knew you were such a smooth talker, Director.”

“Director, you almost had me convinced we’re a professional hair transplant team. If we printed out Shen Huaizhou’s photo, photoshopped it, and made before-and-after comparison posters to hang on the wall, it’d be even more convincing!”

She stretched languidly under the sunlight, then turned to see Ling Fang sitting in the shade and asked warmly, “Hey, Director, want to soak up some sun?”

Ling Fang’s face remained expressionless, and he said nothing.

He habitually picked up the coffee to drink, but as he lifted the cup, he noticed his hand trembling slightly. Silently, he set it back down as if nothing had happened.

“You’ve got too much free time,” Ling Fang glanced at Xie Qingling. For some reason, whenever he saw her now, he’d instinctively get a headachea symptom he’d also experienced when Shen Huaizhou first joined the team. Ling Fang sighed. “During this seven-day break, you don’t have to stay in the office all the time. Go out more.”

Stop hovering around him and stop staying here to annoy him.

The thought that he might still need the wheelchair tomorrow put Ling Fang in a foul mood.

Reminded by his words, Xie Qingling grew quiet.

The sudden vacation left her unsure how to spend it.

After a moment’s thought, she said, “Then I’ll check with my friends to see if there are any fun activities.”

Ye Anran and the others would still be working; Xie Qingling was the only one with time off.

Naturally, she could only seek out other idle people.

Ling Fang nodded, watching her head upstairs.

Xie Qingling took out her phone, opened the group chat, and sent a message in the dorm group.

[Xie Qingling: I’ve got time off! A whole week! Lvlv! Jiajia! Want to go watch a movie together!!!]

[Xie Qingling: Spinning wildly.jpg]

Jiang Lvlv and Dong Jia replied instantly.

[Jiang Lvlv: Aaaah, so jealous! But I don’t have any time off. I found a new internshipslaving away now.]

[Jiang Lvlv: Crying pitifully.jpg]

[Dong Jia: I’m free! I’m free! You’ve all started interning, and I’m practically growing mold from boredom at school.]

[Dong Jia: Want to check out some beauties? @Xie Qingling (wicked grin.jpg)]

[Jiang Lvlv: What? You’re going to post selfies! Send them quickly!]

[Dong Jia: Oh no, not selfies (shy emoji.jpg)]

[Dong Jia: I meant my goddess? She? has a performance in Future City recently, tickets are super hard to get!!! But our club has tickets! Qingling, how about we go watch it together?]

After saying this, Dong Jia uploaded a dance performance admission ticket in the group chat.
