Chapter 42

11 p.m.

Chai Yuhu finally finished working overtime.

In Chai Yuhu’s work area, most colleagues had already left. He was the last one to leave his workstation.

When Chai Yuhu walked into the break room to get a cup of hot water, he immediately spotted two long-haired beauties sitting inside.

Chai Yuhu froze, his gaze instinctively drawn to their long hair before he fell silent.

Judging by their clothing, they were likely from the same group as the man and woman he saw during the day.

They seemed to be from some department, claiming to be here to protect him.

Although Chai Yuhu remained somewhat confused about why special personnel were needed to protect someone who’d been pranked with a haircut, he genuinely wanted to catch the culprit quickly, so he had agreed.

After enduring the brutal grind of a full day’s work, Chai Yuhu was completely exhausted. Even though he’d woken up this morning furious enough to want to smash the world when he saw himself in the mirror, after being drained by work all day, he’d been thoroughly defeated by the world and had no energy left for outbursts, appearing much calmer now.

He walked to the water dispenser, poured himself a cup of water, drank it silently, then said to the two figures nearby: “Are you planning to follow me like this all the time? Even when I go home?”

Shen Huaizhou remained silent.

Xie Qingling nodded gently and said: “Yes, until we catch the mastermind behind this.”

“No clues yet? Does finding someone who likes playing pranks require so many people?” Chai Yuhu didn’t quite understand.

“We have some clues, but I suggest you’d better not know about them.”

Chai Yuhu fell silent again.

What’s with all the mystery?

“Alright, I’m going home now,” Chai Yuhu said. “I have work tomorrow.”

If he didn’t get back to sleep soon, he felt like he might die from exhaustion. Calculating the time, if he went back, tidied up, and played a couple rounds of games, there’d be hardly any time left for sleep.

But Xie Qingling shook her head: “We’ve already requested leave for you. You don’t need to come to work until this matter is resolved.”

“Holy shit.” Chai Yuhu’s face turned pale.

He trembled as he said: “Once I had a 38-degree fever, but my boss still called and made me come in for overtime. This time he actually agreed to give me leave…”

The fact that the vampire had agreed to give him leave indirectly indicated two things.

First, skinflints only let people go when the sky was falling, meaning the situation he was in must be really serious.

Second, this department had high authority even his boss had to obey them so he’d better cooperate.

Chai Yuhu murmured: “I have a feeling I might die…”

“…”

Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou exchanged glances.

It had to be said that Chai Yuhu’s intuition was quite sharp in its own way.

However, since they were here, they would do their utmost to protect him.

“I can’t promise anything else, but as long as I’m alive, I won’t let you die.”

Xie Qingling continued speaking gently, always keeping Ye Anran’s reminder in mind. Even though Chai Yuhu appeared exhausted and relatively calm now, she hadn’t forgotten that his emotions were teetering on the edge of losing control.

This became especially clear when her gaze fell upon his bare eyebrows.

However, her comfort seemed to have the opposite effect, making Chai Yuhu’s hand tremble slightly as he set down his cup.

Chai Yuhu’s mind was already conjuring up convoluted stories: “My baldness might destroy the world,” “Am I being threatened by some terrorist organization?” “Do I harbor some unspeakable secret?” and “Were my hairs some special treasure that got stolen?” etc.

He almost hoped his hair wouldn’t grow back if it truly possessed some extraordinary quality. After all, while innocence itself isn’t a crime, possessing a rare treasure can make one a target!

Perhaps baldness meant safety.

But as a responsible working professional, Chai Yuhu knew better than to ask unnecessary questions and understood when to cooperate he still had that basic sense.

Chai Yuhu nodded and said, “Alright, I’ll cooperate with you.”

The three left the office and went downstairs.

Following his usual routine, Chai Yuhu would typically rush to catch the last subway at this hour, but Xie Qingling stopped him.

“To avoid unnecessary complications, I suggest you come with us.”

Thus, Chai Yuhu got on Shen Huaizhou’s motorcycle.

Shen Huaizhou rode in front, Chai Yuhu sat in the middle, and Xie Qingling took the rear.

Sandwiched between two beautiful women, feeling their long hair flutter in the night breeze while constantly worrying whether his wig might blow away, Chai Yuhu felt a peculiar mix of emotions complex, sorrowful, and envious.

Shen Huaizhou drove extremely fast, reaching Chai Yuhu’s bachelor apartment in just five minutes.

The small apartment contained only a bed, a bathroom for washing up, and a tiny open kitchen. A dirty carpet covered the floor, scattered with game consoles and snacks.

With three people inside, the space felt cramped and crowded.

As someone whose life revolved around overtime work with minimal female interaction the most frequent female creatures in his life being mosquitoes Chai Yhu felt increasingly uncomfortable.

Glancing at Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou a few times, he blushed slightly.

“The place is small… please, make yourselves comfortable,” Chai Yuhu said awkwardly. “I’ll go wash up first.”

Xie Qingling nodded, watching him enter the bathroom.

Soon, the sound of running water echoed from inside.

About five minutes passed, and Chai Yuhu still hadn’t emerged.

Xie Qingling glanced at Shen Huaizhou.

Shen Huaizhou walked to the bathroom door and knocked. Hearing no response, he pushed the door open

Inside, Chai Yuhu had removed his wig and was grimacing at the mirror while applying medicine to his scalp.

Clearly, all his hair had fallen out.
His scalp was completely bald, mottled with bloodstains. Some wounds had already scabbed over and been treated with medicine, yet the sight remained utterly pitiful.

The faucet was still running, the sound of water drowning out Shen Huaizhou’s earlier knocking.

Suddenly caught in such a wretched state, Chai Yuhu turned around furiously. Upon seeing Shen Huaizhou more precisely, upon seeing Shen Huaizhou’s full head of long hair Chai Yuhu broke down.

There was also a more hidden sentiment: losing face so badly in front of a great beauty shattered Chai Yuhu’s heart into pieces.

Although his hair had never been particularly thick to begin with, this incident… was nothing short of adding frost to snow for his already sparse hairline.

Even for a programmer, having thin hair is proof of one’s hard work but did it have to be completely gone?!

Why, why would something so absurd happen to him? Who had he offended? Was it that elementary school kid he called trash in the game? Ah!

With a face full of regret and indignation, Chai Yuhu cried out bitterly, “Do you have any manners? I’m in the bathroom why did you come in?!”

“Get out, get out now!! I don’t want to see you!”

Shen Huaizhou stared at him for a few moments, confirming there were no signs of an attack, before speaking in a cold yet relatively gentle tone: “For your own safety, we can’t leave you alone for too long. Staying out of our sight for an extended period could be dangerous for you. So, we must ensure you remain within our line of sight.”

Although the explanation was heartwarming…

Why did this great beauty’s voice sound so rough?

Chai Yuhu froze, completely bewildered.

Taking another look at Shen Huaizhou, who stood half a head taller than him, he finally realized this was a man!

“Holy shit.”

And so, Chai Yuhu’s expression grew even more surreal.

He felt that this world was utterly absurd.

And his own kind were anything but normal.

By the time he emerged from the bathroom, Chai Yuhu’s shattered self-esteem had been pieced back together.

In its place was envy and jealousy toward Shen Huaizhou’s full head of long hair.

Couldn’t he share just a little?

He no longer had any idol burdens left. Even in front of Xie Qingling, he could calmly remove his hairpiece. He wasn’t in the mood for a few rounds of gaming either, so he went straight to bed and closed his eyes.

Before falling asleep, he said to Xie Qingling, “I’ve been having nightmares these past few days and really don’t have the energy to entertain you. Make yourselves at home.”

Soon after, he closed his eyes.

Xie Qingling leaned against the wall, her body tense and alert.

According to their estimation, the Spirit would only appear after Chai Yuhu fell asleep.

The first three times, it had taken his hair and eyebrows. They wondered what it would take tonight…

Shen Huaizhou also entered a state of readiness.

His nerves were equally taut, attentively monitoring their surroundings, prepared to react instantly if any abnormal entity intruded.

2 a.m.

Chai Yuhu’s breathing on the bed gradually evened out it seemed he had fallen into a deep sleep.

At this moment, his bachelor apartment remained completely undisturbed.

It was deathly quiet, not even a mosquito could be heard.

Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou exchanged glances, though this time it was Shen Huaizhou standing while Xie Qingling sat.

Another two hours passed.

Chai Yuhu seemed to be sleeping soundly, having started snoring during this period.

Xie Qingling remained seated, and still nothing happened.

She rested her head on one hand, wondering if the ghost wasn’t coming today.

Dawn was approaching.

If it didn’t act at night, would it wait until daytime?

Or would it wait until they were exhausted and their guard was down before making a move?

Various thoughts flashed through her mind.

Xie Qingling said to Shen Huaizhou, “I’ll close my eyes to rest for an hour. We need to be even more vigilant during the next two hours. I’ll take over for you later.”

Shen Huaizhou nodded.

And so, the two took turns resting with their eyes closed, ensuring at least one person was always watching over Chai Yuhu’s safety.

This state continued until morning.

The first light of dawn broke as the sun began to rise.

The Hair-Eating Ghost still hadn’t appeared.

At eight in the morning, Chai Yuhu woke up refreshed after a long sleep.

When he opened his eyes, he found the other two in the apartment still awake.

Had they stayed up all night?

Chai Yuhu said, “Thank you both. I slept very soundly last night. It’s been a long time since I’ve had such good sleep – I felt like I was about to die from exhaustion.”

He had slept for nearly eight hours and was in quite good spirits now.

“By the way, did you catch anything last night?” Chai Yuhu asked eagerly.

Xie Qingling shook her head.

“My colleagues will come later to continue the shift,” Xie Qingling said. “We’ll keep watching.”

At nine in the morning, Ling Fang and Yu Wei arrived to take over.

They would be responsible for following Chai Yuhu around the clock today.

And so, the department personnel revolved around Chai Yuhu for three days.

During these three days, everything remained calm and peaceful.

The Hair-Eating Ghost didn’t appear, and no other ghosts or monsters were discovered.

Had it given up on Chai Yuhu and found another target?

However…

When Dai Xingyu returned after guarding Chai Yhuihu on the third day, he told them with deep concern that the deathly aura on Chai Yuhu’s face hadn’t faded but had actually grown stronger.

He looked like someone on the verge of death.

Ling Fang’s face wrinkled with worry.

The Hair-Eating Ghost hadn’t given up on Chai Yuhu.

With the enemy in the dark and them in the open, if they remained passively waiting, they might never see the day when the Hair-Eating Ghost appeared.

Ling Fang pinched his brow, feeling like the situation had become a tangled mess.

At this moment, Xie Qingling asked, “Director, is it because we’ve been guarding Chai Yuhu constantly that the Hair-Eating Ghost dares not appear?”
