Chapter 41

The video was only five minutes long.

It had likely been sped up and edited to highlight the key moments.

In the early part of the video, only a man sleeping in bed could be seen.

He tossed and turned intermittently, appearing extremely restless.

Around the two-minute mark, Chai Yuhu, who had been tossing and turning, suddenly seemed pinned down by something. His limbs began thrashing wildly and irregularly.

Through the camera’s audio feed, faint chewing and swallowing sounds could be heard at this point.

Chai Yuhu struggled desperately on the bed, clutching his head, looking like a fish that had accidentally leaped ashore under the scorching sun, flailing frantically.

“Ah ”

“Ahhh ”

Chai Yuhu finally jolted awake from his nightmare.

He sat on the bed, clutching his head and gasping for breath, his face filled with terror as if he had witnessed something horrifying.

Then, Chai Yuhu went mad, shouting loudly, “Come out! Show yourself, damn it!”

“Who is it? Who’s playing this prank?”

“Come out! I’ll kill you!”

But no matter how furious Chai Yhu became, no matter how hard he punched the wardrobe, bed, and other furniture, no other presence appeared in the room.

Throughout the five-minute video, aside from the suspicious chewing sounds, Chai Yuhu was the only person visible on screen.

His intense struggle moments earlier seemed like a solo performance with no tangible object if Xie Qingling hadn’t encountered the other world before, she might have thought the same.

Xie Qingling put down the tablet, her expression serious. She said, “Chai Yuhu must be haunted by something.”

Just like the Mountain Goblin that sought revenge on her.

Both were invisible presences, yet the harm they caused was real.

“That’s what we thought too, which is why this case was transferred to your department,” Chen Yinghui said as he picked up his hat and put it on. “Well, Director Ling, I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave. Let’s stay in touch if anything comes up.”

“Take care,” Ling Fang gestured politely.

Chen Yinghui soon left, leaving only Ling Fang and Xie Qingling in the office.

Xie Qingling asked, “Director, should I go check it out?”

“No field work for you today. Regarding Chai Yuhu’s Special Events, I’ve already sent Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu to investigate. We just need to wait for their updates now.”

Xie Qingling nodded and began organizing the files piled up from recent field assignments.

Ling Fang sat by the coffee table in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, holding his laptop and continuously browsing through something.

About two hours passed quietly.

Around 1 p.m., Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu, who had gone to investigate, sent back their report.

Dai Xingyu said, “Director, Anran-jie and I have made contact with Chai Yuhu. Based on my observations, he carries a heavy aura of death.”

“Without a doubt, he’s being haunted by those entities. His forehead is darkened, and he’s shrouded in a sinister energy. If we had found out any later, he might not have made it.”

When spirits kill, it’s usually a long-planned affair.

Once these entities harbor the intent to kill and take action, their moves are ruthless and lethal, aimed at taking lives. Often, by the time the department notices something amiss, the person has already turned cold.

Whatever Chai Yuhu had provoked this time whether it was too weak in ability or employed particularly unusual methods had only managed to snatch his hair after three attempts. This led Chai Yuhu to report to the police three times, inadvertently revealing the ghost’s traces and exposing its whereabouts.

Overall, this was a stroke of luck amid misfortune.

Ling Fang listened, his brow furrowing deeply, and said, “Now, find a way to bring him to the department. We need to keep Chai Yuhu under our supervision.”

Since the ghost had failed three times, this was their opportunity.

Next, they had to eliminate the troublemaking ghost before it could strike again.

“That might not be possible,” Dai Xingyu said. “Chai Yuhu is extremely agitated right now. He won’t listen to us at all. Sister Anran tried to use hypnosis on him, but when he’s in such an extreme state of losing control, her hypnosis techniques can’t take effect.”

Ling Fang asked, “Where is Chai Yuhu now? What is he doing?”

“At work.”

“Then keep an eye on him for now. I’ll send someone to relieve you shortly,” Ling Fang instructed. “At the same time, focus on tracking down that ghost!”

“Understood.”

After ending the call, Ling Fang tapped on his computer, typing out a long list of work assignments. Without turning his head, he said to Xie Qingling, “Finish processing your files within the hour, then go to bed immediately and rest. At 8 PM tonight, you and Shen Huaizhou will relieve Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu. Keep watch over Chai Yuhu throughout the entire night.”

“Understood.”

After assigning Xie Qingling her tasks, Ling Fang switched his call to Yu Wei.

“Old Yu, you’ll handle all field operations alone today. Have Shen Huaizhou return quickly I have another assignment for him.”

The department’s operations immediately grew tense.

They were now racing against the ghost to save a life.

Xie Qingling quickly finished processing her files and returned to her rest room. She lay down and fell asleep not long after.

This was thanks to the various fragrances blended by Ye Anran. When necessary, these medicinal incenses could help adjust their bodies to the appropriate state at the fastest speed including inducing rapid sleep.

Tonight, she and Shen Huaizhou would be keeping watch over Chai Yuhu all night, leaving no other time for rest.

She had to ensure she got sufficient rest during this afternoon period.

She slept until around 7:30 PM.

By then, it was completely dark outside.

As soon as Xie Qingling stepped out of her room, she saw Shen Huaizhou waiting at the door.

Shen Huaizhou tossed a few meat buns into her arms. “Eat these on the way.”

It seemed they were already accustomed to this… highly flexible work routine.

Xie Qingling nodded, hugged the buns, and got into Shen Huaizhou’s car.

Just then, Ye Anran made a group call to both Shen Huaizhou and Xie Qingling.

“Qingling, have you set off yet?”

“On the way.”

Ye Anran continued briefing her through the earpiece: “Chai Yuhu is a member of the R&D department at Huarun Technology. We’ve been surveilling him all day he only leaves his workstation for lunch and bathroom breaks. The rest of the time, he’s working.”

“Dai Xingyu has already investigated several employees with close ties to Chai Yuhu and found nothing unusual.”

“Chai Yuhu is currently very emotionally unstable. When you arrive later, try to speak with him gently.” After a pause, Ye Anran added, “If possible, it’s best if Shen Huaizhou doesn’t speak at all. With his long hair, he might say something unpleasant and upset Chai Yuhu even more.”

Shen Huaizhou: “…”

Xie Qingling: “…”

Shen Huaizhou remained silent, not uttering a word.

Xie Qingling nodded. “Alright, I understand.”

“Okay, I’ll wait for you then.”

“By the way,” Xie Qingling asked, “it’s already 7:45, almost 8 o’clock. Hasn’t Chai Yuhu left work yet?”

“No, he’s working overtime. Yuanfang Building, Huarun Technology Co., Ltd., Room 005, 23rd floor. Don’t go to the wrong place.”

“Got it.”

It seemed he was a typical office worker with a rigid routine just shuttling between home and work.

That made things much easier.

With limited places he could go, keeping an eye on him wouldn’t be too difficult.

Soon, they arrived at Yuanfang Building.

At 8 p.m., the building was still brightly lit, with many overtime workers bustling about it seemed even livelier than during the day.

Shen Huaizhou glanced at Xie Qingling and asked, “Noticed anything?”

Xie Qingling waited a moment but heard no prompts. She shook her head. “Not for now.”

“Let’s go up and take a look,” Shen Huaizhou said.

The two entered Yuanfang Building. Dressed in similar black outfits Shen Huaizhou in a long robe and Xie Qingling in a long dress they stood out immediately, especially Shen Huaizhou.

Tall, over six feet, with pale skin and long hair, he seemed to carry his own spotlight.

Yet he wore a stern expression, saying nothing, appearing both aloof and strikingly cold.

Xie Qingling followed behind him, silently grumbling to herself about the pressure of working alongside Shen Huaizhou.

With his icy demeanor, Shen Huaizhou deterred several men who considered approaching them. They made their way unimpeded to Room 005 on the 23rd floor.

In the break room of Huarun Technology’s R&D department, they relieved Dai Xingyu and Ye Anran.

From there, they could see Chai Yuhu sitting at his workstation.

He wore a thick, gray-black wig, typing furiously with a tense, impatient expression. His gloomy face was conspicuously missing eyebrows.

Ah… so it was a wig.

It seemed Chai Yuhu hadn’t yet mastered the skill of drawing eyebrows, leaving him to work bare-faced.

No wonder he was in such a foul mood a face without eyebrows lacked vitality and looked utterly strange.

Xie Qingling couldn’t even imagine what he would look like without the wig.

Chai Yuhu still had plenty of overtime ahead. It was going to be a long wait.

Shen Huaizhou crossed his arms and looked at Xie Qingling, asking again, “What about now? Have you noticed anything unusual?”

Although Dai Xingyu had already conducted a sweep, it was better to have Xie Qingling check as well, just to be safe.

After spending this time together, the department had come to understand the differences in Xie Qingling and Dai Xingyu’s abilities.

Dai Xingyu could perceive a wider range of space, but his perceptions were relatively vague and imprecise. Xie Qingling’s ability to “see spirits” had a much smaller range sometimes it seemed as if she had no ability at all but once she detected something, the information was relatively accurate.

[A silver horn on its head, three eyes with a vertical mouth, teeth sharp as awls, and a body as sturdy as an ox. The Hair-Eating Spirit, which likes to perch by the pillow in the dead of night chewing on hair, has now set its sights on an adult man with not much hair. Strangely, the Hair-Eating Spirit particularly favors the hair of virgin infants. This time, perhaps it’s simply driven by extreme hunger.]

Xie Qingling said, “This time it’s a Hair-Eating Spirit, one that feeds on hair. For some reason, it has targeted Chai Yuhu.”

Her gaze drifted unconsciously toward Shen Huaizhou’s smooth, long hair, and she hesitated, holding back her words.

Shen Huaizhou asked again, “Is the Hair-Eating Spirit following him now?”

“No, it will probably wait until nightfall, after Chai Yuhu has fallen asleep.”

Shen Huaizhou said, “Then we’ll wait.”

Once night falls and the Hair-Eating Spirit appears, they would capture it immediately.
