Chapter 39

“Alright, I’m full,” Xie Qingling said.

“If you’re done eating, you should hurry and leave. You look unfamiliar you’re not from around here, are you? This place is far from the inner city.”

“Listen to this old granny’s advice: don’t wander outside at night. It’s not safe!” The elderly woman tidied up the tables and chairs while admonishing Xie Qingling.

“These days, there are plenty of bad people out there. Go home early, alright?”

Xie Qingling picked up her silver case and nodded. “Understood, Granny.”

However, despite her obedient response, Xie Qingling didn’t leave the desolate street after exiting the noodle shop. Instead, she continued wandering along it.

She wasn’t afraid of danger in fact, she feared things being “too safe.” Today, she had come specifically in search of trouble.

It took about fifteen minutes to walk from one end of the street to the other.

Xie Qingling spent twenty minutes covering nearly every part of it.

She glanced at the time: 7:20 PM.

By now, daylight had faded completely, a crescent moon had risen, and the sky had turned fully dark.

Xie Qingling activated her earpiece and connected to Ling Fang.

“Chief, nothing unusual so far.”

Ling Fang had expected this. If the mystery here could be solved in one visit, the reported incidents wouldn’t have persisted for over a month.

“Stay until nine. If nothing happens by then, return first. I’ll send Dai Xingyu tomorrow. Although minor supernatural occurrences are frequent on this street, they don’t happen every day.”

But as soon as he finished speaking, Ling Fang heard a piercing scream

“Help!! There’s a ghost!!!”

It came through Xie Qingling’s earpiece.

Ling Fang immediately stood up, his voice sharp. “Go check it out!”

In truth, Xie Qingling hadn’t waited for Ling Fang’s order. Her body instinctively chased after the sound.

Arriving at an intersection leading to a dark alley, a pale-faced middle-aged man stumbled out in a panic.

He trembled all over, fleeing blindly.

Xie Qingling grabbed his shoulder and asked, “What’s wrong? What happened?”

However…

Her friendly inquiry didn’t calm the man down. Instead, it set him off like a firecracker. His pupils dilated as he stared at Xie Qingling in terror. “Ghost… a female ghost… a female ghost!!”

His hoarse, frightened voice soon died in his throat.

He had fainted.

Xie Qingling: “…”

Did he mistake her for a female ghost?

Was she that frightening?

After a quick glance around, Xie Qingling lifted the unconscious man and propped him against a wall, making sure passing bicycles or other vehicles wouldn’t run him over.

Then, she reported to Ling Fang, “Chief, I need medical backup here. Someone fainted.”

“Understood. I’m sending Ye Anran right away.” Ling Fang hadn’t expected Xie Qingling to actually uncover something. “Do you need any other support? What’s the situation on-site? Any violent incidents?”

Xie Qingling shook her head and glanced at the man. “Not for now. The situation is unclear, but this one fainted probably because I scared him. No violent incidents so far.”

Ling Fang: “…”
Xie Qingling drew the Blood Oath and held it in her hand, staring into the pitch-black, bottomless-like narrow alley before stepping inside.

Well then, let her see what exactly was lurking here.

Xie Qingling heightened her alertness to the utmost, cautiously advancing while scanning her surroundings with vigilant eyes.

As she walked, Xie Qingling suddenly halted, her face turning stern as she stared at a wall blocking her path.

She had scouted this route earlier.

If her memory served correctly, this path should have been clear and unobstructed.

So how did this wall suddenly appear?

Xie Qingling reached out and touched the wall’s surface, instantly causing ripples like water to spread across it. Her hand sank into the wall and disappeared.

It felt somewhat chilly.

But she detected no malicious intent.

Moreover, the “presence” behind the wall hadn’t attacked her.

Frowning, Xie Qingling withdrew her hand. Just as she was about to explain the situation to Ling Fang, her peripheral vision caught two tall figures standing in the alley less than 1.5 meters wide – though she couldn’t tell when they had appeared.

One wore red robes, the other blue.

Xie Qingling froze momentarily, but when she tried to see them clearly, the figures vanished in a flash, leaving nothing behind.

This was…

Were they human?

[City God Six Ministries, Jin Jia Yin Suo. The golden and silver generals responsible for subduing Fierce Ghosts and capturing spirits have opened their long-dormant eyes in the mortal realm.]

[What a chaotic mortal world, how sparse the incense offerings. Jin Jia Yin Suo drag their heavy shackles through the mortal realm, dutifully apprehending the new ghosts weeping on fresh graves and the lost wandering souls, attempting to send them to the underworld.]

[Yet, in this new era, the City God streets no longer exist. The City God Temple that once stood here no longer receives incense offerings. The underworld’s transit station between realms has lost its function, causing the newly captured ghosts and old souls to riot here.]

[The overwhelmed Jin Jia Yin Suo block your path, asking for directions to the City God Temple. Hurried passerby, offer some guidance to the lost golden and silver generals – They can no longer find their way.]

Xie Qingling suddenly understood.

She realized now.

This probably wasn’t her encountering ghosts.

But rather…

She had come across deities.

Could deities be drawn into a Killing Field?

Facing this situation for the first time, Xie Qingling didn’t act rashly but first contacted Ling Fang.

“Department Head, I understand what’s happening now,” Xie Qingling said.

“This street should be filled with many ghosts right now, but not the kind that harm people – more precisely, they’re human souls after death. Because there are… two deities suppressing them, no major chaos has broken out. The current situation is that these two deities are lost. They want to go to the City God Temple. This seems like it could alleviate some of their burden, roughly speaking.”

Xie Qingling concisely summarized the situation.

After listening, Ling Fang was momentarily stunned.

…How did she manage to encounter something like this?

Meeting deities wasn’t common.

And two lost deities at that.

Ling Fang asked her: “Do you know which deities they are?”

“These two appear to be underworld civil servants, Jin Jia Yin Suo, responsible for detaining Fierce Ghosts,” Xie Qingling asked. “Director, what should we do now?”

Jin Jia Yin Suo…

Ling Fang said, “Wait a moment.”

While keeping the call connected, Ling Fang typed information about Jin Jia Yin Suo into the computer for retrieval.

If they were “civil servants,” they should be officially registered righteous Spirits, so finding information should be relatively straightforward.

Soon, the internal database displayed information about Jin Jia Yin Suo.

After scanning it briefly, Ling Fang had a general understanding.

He said, “Judging by their duties, these two should be on the same side as us.”

“We maintain order in the human realm, while Jin Jia Yin Suo maintain order in the underworld. Hei Bai Wu Chang capture souls, while Jin Jia Yin Suo detain Fierce Ghosts. Actually, these two are predecessors of Hei Bai Wu Chang and rarely take action under normal circumstances.”

“The only reasons they would be dispatched are if Fierce Ghosts have appeared in the human realm, or if there are causing trouble.”

Their presence here… could it mean there are Fierce Ghosts? But that might not be the case it could simply be due to staff shortages.

Ling Fang muttered to himself, “If there were Fierce Ghosts, they wouldn’t be causing such minor disturbances.”

He leaned more toward the theory that the order in the other world had also fallen into chaos, no longer as well-organized as before.

“What do you think they’re looking for?” Ling Fang asked.

“They’re looking for the City God Temple.”

“Try to communicate with them. It would be best if you could give them directions.”

Xie Qingling was stunned: “Directions? There’s no City God Temple here at all.”

Now Xie Qingling understood.

There might have been one in the past, but there definitely wasn’t one now.

Even the sixty-year-old grandmother had never seen one, meaning the City God Temple had disappeared at least sixty years ago.

In this situation, where could Xie Qingling possibly give directions to?

Ling Fang said, “Consult your Mystical Power. Those buried underground might know everything.”

Xie Qingling understood: “I see.”

After ending the call, Xie Qingling gestured toward the empty air, unsure if the other party could understand.

“I’ll try to find the way for you now. Don’t rush, it’ll be done soon.” After a pause, Xie Qingling added, “Keep those ghosts under control don’t let them cause any more trouble.”

The reports that had been coming in for over a month were probably caused by these detained ghosts.

Xie Qingling crouched on the ground, placed one hand on the surface, and closed her eyes.

“Soul Return!”

Instantly, Xie Qingling felt as if numerous presences had gathered around her where there had been nothing before. The weeping of men, women, and children intertwined, their sobs almost tangible.

They were Spirits, instinctively sensing the Soul Return Technique and scrambling to respond.

They could feel the energy emanating from Xie Qingling, carrying faint traces of returning to life.

They wanted to return to life, to regain their souls, to… live again.

In that moment, countless ghosts rushed toward Xie Qingling.

She felt a chill run down her spine, her body nearly freezing stiff. Ghost after ghost piled onto her, their weightless forms pressing down until she slightly bent under the pressure.

Although these spirits did not possess the ability to harm people, piling up like a small mountain to press down on Xie Qingling was still exhausting enough.

Xie Qingling frowned, thought for a moment, and hesitated about whether or not to deploy the Killing Field.

But soon, before she could act, the weight on her body began to gradually lessen.

Xie Qingling didn’t know what was happening. If she had been inside the Killing Field at that moment, she would have heard an angry low roar coming from behind her, along with two red and blue figures throwing these spirits aside.

“Roar ”

The spirits that had pounced on Xie Qingling were dealt with one by one, and after that, no other abnormal beings dared to approach her.

Because now, two exceptionally tall red and blue figures stood guard behind Xie Qingling, glaring sternly and angrily at these souls seeking Soul Return.

Finally, the Soul Return Technique found the beings it was looking for.

One, two, three, four…

A total of six skeletons emerged from the ground, breaking through the soil.

They lined up in a row in front of Xie Qingling.

The skeletons included men and women, old and young.

Judging by the color of their bones, they had been dead for at least a hundred years.

“Alright,” Xie Qingling stood up and asked them, “Tell me, where is the City God Temple?”
