Chapter 38
Xie Qingling watched them for a long time before finally sighing and saying, “Come in first.”
Dong Jia and Jiang Lvlv nodded, then the two of them entered the first-floor office hall together.
Dai Xingyu poured them water and sat to the side, asking, “Are you here to sign the confidentiality agreement?”
Jiang Lvlv shook her head. “We’re here to undergo Memory Cleansing.”
Huh?
Dai Xingyu was taken aback, wondering if he had messed things up.
But the director had clearly said yesterday that they only needed to sign the confidentiality agreement!
Dai Xingyu looked helplessly at Xie Qingling, trying to convey his innocence and diligence.
He’d already written the self-criticism report why was it still like this?
The director was really too unreasonable!
“It was their own decision,” Xie Qingling said. “I’ll request instructions from the director to see what the procedure for Memory Cleansing entails.”
Her earpiece lit up, and Ling Fang’s voice came through.
After hearing Xie Qingling’s explanation, Ling Fang said, “Actually, this choice is the safest option for them. In fact, for ordinary people who encounter Special Events but lack special abilities to protect themselves, the most secure approach we take is Memory Cleansing. However, they are your close friends. You know them better than we do. Since you insist, I’ll accommodate you.”
“When it comes to the mystical world, the more you interact with it and the more you understand it, the more it attracts prying eyes and disturbances. For example, if they were to notice those unusual entities in a crowd because they know such things exist even without hostile intent it could draw their attention and even provoke attacks, bringing unforeseen disaster upon themselves.”
“The best way to shield oneself from those beings’ gaze and minimize the probability of Special Events occurring is to neither understand nor engage with them. After they cleanse this portion of their memories, their lives should return to normal fairly quickly.”
Xie Qingling remained silent for a moment before saying, “I understand.”
“I’ll have Ye Anran return shortly. For now, light some Benzoin for them.”
“Received.”
After ending the communication, Xie Qingling said to Dong Jia and Jiang Lvlv, “Alright, you just need to wait a little while.”
She took Dong Jia and Jiang Lvlv to Room 206 and had them lie down.
Then, Xie Qingling took out the Benzoin.
Once lit, a warm medicinal fragrance filled the air, soothing and drowsy, relaxing their bodies into extreme comfort.
Jiang Lvlv and Dong Jia were almost asleep.
After a moment’s thought, Xie Qingling still asked, “So, before the cleansing, do you have anything you want to say to me? After all… we might not be able to talk like this in the future.”
Jiang Lvlv took out her phone, opened the interface, and said to Xie Qingling, “Jiajia and I have both set your contact to speed dial and pinned it to the top. If we’re ever unlucky enough to keep running into this kind of thing, we’ll still come find you. Aren’t we clever?”
Xie Qingling: “…”
That’s clever. Really clever.
She looked at Jiang Lvlv with a mix of amusement and exasperation, saying softly, “Alright then, sleep well. May you both have sweet dreams.”
By now, Dong Jia and Jiang Lvlv had already fallen into slumber.
Next, it was Ye Anran’s turn to work.
Around two in the afternoon, Ye Anran completed the Hypnosis.
Dong Jia and Jiang Lvlv had been sent back to their respective places one returned to the hospital to continue her stay, while the other went back to school and lay in her dorm room.
Watching her two friends leave, Xie Qingling felt extremely conflicted.
Dai Xingyu noticed this and walked over to her, quietly asking, “Are you really that bothered by their memories being wiped? Why didn’t you try harder to persuade them earlier?”
“Do you have any ordinary friends? The kind without any special abilities but who you interact with regularly?” Instead of answering, Xie Qingling posed a question of her own.
Dai Xingyu thought for a moment and said, “Ever since I awakened, I was sent to the department for training. It’s been five years now. With such a busy work schedule, when would I have time to make friends?”
“It seems I’m the only one still maintaining connections in the mundane world. But it’s wrong to keep dragging them into danger just for the sake of staying connected.” Xie Qingling smiled faintly. “I used to think my job was just a bit unusual, that I could still have my friends’ company like before. But now I realize they’re in the light, while I’m in the shadows. Maybe someday we’ll bump into each other on the street, but they’ll never know why I appeared there.”
Dai Xingyu said, “Don’t say that you make yourself sound like some dark villain…”
Xie Qingling burst into laughter.
After a pause, Xie Qingling suddenly remembered something and looked at Dai Xingyu. “You’ve been working for five years already? I really couldn’t tell. You’re twenty-one now, so five years ago you were only sixteen still a minor. Is the department employing child labor? Is that even legal?”
“Special circumstances call for special measures. The department is so short-staffed we’d use a dog as a person if we could. What’s wrong with child labor?”
“So you should show me some respect. I’m your senior, your elder. In the department, aside from Old Yu, I have the most seniority,” Dai Xingyu declared.
Xie Qingling was surprised. “Even the department head hasn’t been here as long as you?”
If he didn’t have enough seniority, how did Ling Fang become department head? He didn’t seem particularly powerful either.
Backdoor connections? Xie Qingling’s thoughts began to wander. But that didn’t seem right either. As a manager, Ling Fang was quite competent. And this didn’t seem like the kind of place where backdoor deals would work people died here.
“Of course not. The department head was transferred here just three years ago. When I first joined the department for training, the head of Future City’s Special Events department wasn’t the current one it was someone else.”
Xie Qingling asked, “What happened to the previous department head? Was he promoted and transferred?”
Dai Xingyu’s expression shifted slightly. He paused for a few seconds before saying quietly, “No.”
“The old department head… he died.”
Xie Qingling froze.
Ye Anran was stretching her limbs as she descended from the second floor. Upon hearing Dai Xingyu’s words, she flicked a silver needle with a sharp “thwack,” making him yelp in pain.
Ye Anran snapped, “Why are you scaring her for no reason? Looking for a beating?”
“Sis Anran, why did you hit me again? I was just telling the truth!”
“Shut up! Or I’ll have the minister increase your reflection essay to twenty thousand words.”
“Alright, alright, I get it.”
Xie Qingling glanced at them but didn’t press for details, returning to writing her reflection essay.
The next day, Ling Fang assigned Xie Qingling a new task.
He handed her a thick stack of case files, compiled by public officials from the Special Events department, documenting strange phenomena and bizarre reports.
Ling Fang explained, “This street has been flooded with public complaints over the past month. Records show frequent incidents: people getting lost, wallets stolen, being hit by Extraterrestrial Objects out of nowhere, and drunk individuals wandering off only to be stripped naked and dumped roadside completely unharmed otherwise. The cases are numerous, but investigations yielded nothing.”
The street in question lay at the border between the old and new urban districts.
Even before Future City’s redevelopment, it was a remote suburb, and it remained so afterward.
Compared to the old district, foot traffic here was sparse, giving it an almost abandoned appearance.
Yet, some residents still lived there.
The high frequency of minor incidents in such a low-traffic area was indeed unusual.
Xie Qingling asked Ling Fang, “Is this a marked zone? It doesn’t seem like a hotspot for Special Events.”
“Neither. That’s what’s puzzling.”
Though not violent crimes, ignoring these occurrences would be problematic.
Ling Fang said, “So I want you to investigate and submit a summary report.”
“Understood.”
Xie Qingling took the files and began reviewing them.
The earliest report dated back twenty days prior: a stolen wallet.
However, the case was quickly closed when the claimant found the wallet at home two days later.
The second incident involved someone getting lost for two days, unable to find their way out. After escaping, they filed a complaint against the Urban Development Bureau, criticizing poor city planning.
The third case…
Xie Qingling studied each entry carefully, growing increasingly unsettled by the street’s strangeness.
Later reports clustered densely, peaking before tapering off not because incidents decreased, but because the street’s eerie reputation kept people away.
By afternoon, Xie Qingling had finished organizing the files. She mounted her Motorcycle and set off for the dilapidated street.
Because the distance was relatively far, it took Xie Qingling about half an hour by car to reach that desolate street.
On both sides of the street stood low-rise buildings that looked quite old.
The exposed walls were mottled and worn, with peeling paint that had long lost its original vibrant color, now gray and dusty, exuding a strong sense of age.
It was unclear what this place had been used for in the past, but judging by the scale of the buildings, it seemed to have experienced a period of prosperity at some point.
Xie Qingling glanced around a few times and then walked the entire length of the street from end to end.
Nothing happened.
The voice in her mind did not sound either.
Xie Qingling was in no hurry.
After reviewing the files, she had discovered that most of the Special Events reported by the complainants occurred in the evening or at night.
If there was truly something unusual about this street, then the Spirits here likely only appeared after dusk.
Xie Qingling decided to wait here until nightfall.
Just in case, she had brought her silver combat case with her during this patrol, containing all the equipment she might need.
However, waiting was one thing, but going hungry was absolutely out of the question.
Xie Qingling found a noodle shop still open by the street, ordered a bowl of noodles, and filled her stomach.
While slurping her noodles, she struck up a conversation with the shop owner. “Boss, what was this street used for in the past?”
The owner appeared to be a grandmother in her fifties. She said, “This street hasn’t been used for much of anything. I was born and raised here, and it’s been like this since I was a child always pretty empty.”
“A while ago, for some reason, a bunch of exploration streamers suddenly showed up. They came in a rush to do their live streams and then left. Now there are even fewer people. They said this place is haunted… Haunted by what? That’s just ridiculous. I’ve lived here for sixty years if there were really Spirits, I would’ve seen them by now.” The grandmother laughed heartily.
Xie Qingling nodded. “I thought this place might have been prosperous once.”
“It was, for a while, probably around my grandmother’s time,” the grandmother’s tone suddenly turned nostalgic. “My grandmother said there used to be a temple on this street. Back then, people often came to offer incense. It was bustling with crowds, very lively. But later, the temple disappeared, and so did the people.”
Xie Qingling immediately asked, “What kind of temple?”
“How would I know? The temple was already gone by the time I was born.” The grandmother began shooing her away. “Are you finished eating? It’s almost dark I need to close up and rest.”
