Chapter 36

Having overheard all of Xie Qingling and Ling Fang’s conversation, the Huapi Ghost fled in panic.

It knew its efforts were futile there was no escape left. Yet at the brink of life and death, even a laughable attempt felt better than doing nothing.

The Huapi Ghost couldn’t accept a meek surrender, but it had completely abandoned any thought of attacking Xie Qingling. Xie Qingling was unbeatable. To survive under her hands, its only option was to flee!

Crawling blindly through the darkness, the Huapi Ghost stumbled along, knocking over objects without care, unaware of its location or how far it had traveled.

Only one thing occupied its mind now

Had Xie Qingling left?

Was it safe?

Perhaps this final struggle had truly bought it a sliver of hope for survival…

In its dazed state, a figure suddenly blocked its path ahead.

The crawling Huapi Ghost froze.

Then, it felt something cold press against its forehead.

Xie Qingling no longer wasted time with tedious dialogue she didn’t even utter a single syllable.

With a “bang,” the Huapi Ghost lost even its dark world.

After confirming the last Huapi Ghost’s death, Xie Qingling holstered her gun, reattaching it to her thigh strap, and praised, “Excellent. Custom-made bullets are indeed convenient.”

Once again, she had eliminated a ghost with her firearm.

“Director, it’s over,” Xie Qingling activated her earpiece and reported to Ling Fang.

“Alright, stand down.”

With the battle concluded, Xie Qingling retracted the Killing Field.

Then, she spotted the skin shed by the Huapi Ghost on the ground.

It was a membrane resembling human skin, pure as jade and thin as a cicada’s wing. Cool to the touch, yet not unpleasant.

【A painted skin of unknown material. This is the Huapi Ghost’s treasure, capable of depicting any person in the world. Though not perfectly lifelike, it should suffice to deceive foolish humans.】

Xie Qingling: “…”

Seemed like equipment dropped from this round of monster hunting.

According to Work Guidelines, such spoils could be claimed for personal use.

Of course, they could also be traded for other mystical items, but Xie Qingling currently had no need for such exchanges. Thus, she saw no reason to surrender the painted skin for bartering.

She stored the trophy in a silver case, wrapped up her work, and returned to the office.

By the time she arrived, it was nearly 5 PM.

Dusk was settling, and the streets grew crowded.

It was the peak hour for commuters and students: office workers heading home, children and teens leaving school, parents picking up their kids, and pedestrians crowding the sidewalks waiting for traffic lights. The roadways were denser with vehicles than usual, filling the streets with bustling noise.

When Xie Qingling entered the office, everyone else had already returned.

Among them was Yang Xianxian.
Yang Xianxian, exhausted beyond her young body’s limits, had fallen asleep.

Though the day’s events hadn’t been numerous for her, the constant moving between locations had left her profoundly weary.

Lying on the sofa with her eyes tightly shut, even while trapped within the Illusionary Realm crafted by Shen Huaizhou, teardrops occasionally escaped from the corners of her eyes.

It was evident that despite Shen Huaizhou’s fabricated illusion, Yang Xianxian remained restless in her slumber.

Yu Wei sat nearby keeping watch over her, holding a small yellow duck plush toy he’d produced from somewhere. He remained silent throughout, not uttering a word.

The office atmosphere was utterly still.

Ling Fang was the first to notice Xie Qingling and asked, “Everything resolved?”

Xie Qingling nodded.

She inquired, “How is Jiang Lvlv’s condition? How is she doing now?”

This was Xie Qingling’s primary concern at the moment.

“She’s in the inpatient department at People’s Hospital. Vital signs are stable, no major issues. Currently, she’s just suffered some shock. According to the doctors, she should recover after some bed rest.”

Hearing this, Xie Qingling nodded and breathed a sigh of relief, feeling considerably reassured.

Then she turned her gaze to Yang Xianxian and asked, “Department Head, what should we do about her?”

Ling Fang sighed deeply, avoiding the question about Yang Xianxian and instead addressing the two corpses in the basement.

“The bodies from unit 1303 have been ‘deflated’ and processed. The police are currently transferring the remains, while the Logistics Department is working on concealing the truth of what happened.”

Ling Fang continued, “But given the gruesome state of the bodies, conventional methods can no longer cover this up. To prevent the true cause of their deaths from becoming public, we have to use alternative means to conceal their actual manner of death. Otherwise, it might trigger greater social panic.”

“How will you conceal it?”

“Burn them to charred remains – that way nothing will be detectable.”

Xie Qingling shuddered, lowering her head as she said, “Indeed, given their condition, that’s the only way.”

Ling Fang went on, “Later, have Ye Anran hypnotize the child to rearrange her memories, then hand her over to the police. Tomorrow, after the ‘accident’ occurs, family members will be notified to claim the bodies. Then they can be laid to rest properly.”

“Alright,” Ling Fang said. “Everyone return to your respective tasks. Old Yu will watch over the child, the rest of you take your positions.”

The group dispersed immediately – some writing reports, others tending to their injuries.

A silent atmosphere permeated the room, with no one speaking.

They worked late into the night. Only after handing over the child did the department members finally disperse, bringing today’s events to some form of conclusion.

The next day, Xie Qingling had just brought a pot of freshly brewed coffee from the kitchen.

Sitting on the sofa, she browsed through Dai Xingyu’s after-action report from yesterday, then after some thought, turned on the television.

The morning news was currently broadcasting.

The news anchor on screen, with a serious expression, was reporting in a sweet voice: “At 3:30 this morning, a major traffic accident occurred on Changying Road…”

“According to the on-site investigation, the deceased are a man and woman in the driver’s and passenger seats. Traffic was sparse on the road during the early morning hours, and aside from this, there were no other casualties.”

“Due to the intense fire at the scene, by the time firefighters extinguished the flames, both individuals had already suffered severe burns and were rendered unrecognizable.”

“The specific identities of the deceased are still being verified. If any citizens recognize license plate number XXXX, please call XXXXX to claim…”

Soon, it was 9 a.m.

Today was Shen Huaizhou’s shift.

He pushed open the office door and immediately heard the news broadcast from the television.

After watching for a moment, he asked Xie Qingling: “Is the psychological pressure overwhelming when encountering such things for the first time?”

“It’s manageable.” Xie Qingling thought for a moment and said, “I did what I could. At least the same incident won’t happen again. However, I think it would be best if we could prevent such events before they occur.”

Shen Huaizhou took a sip of coffee. “That’s impossible. You’re being too idealistic.”

“When you discover one cockroach in your home, it means the others have already overrun the place,” he said. “We’re in the light, they’re in the dark. Humans can’t eliminate all cockroaches we can only do our best.”

Xie Qingling felt conflicted. “Alright, I won’t argue with you. You’re on duty alone today. The director asked me and Dai Xingyu to go to People’s Hospital to check on my friend’s condition.”

“Understood.”

After waiting about five minutes in the office, Dai Xingyu arrived.

He and Xie Qingling headed together to the inpatient department of People’s Hospital.

Ling Fang was primarily concerned about Jiang Lvlv’s condition. He feared the Huapi Ghost might have other tricks, so he needed Xie Qingling and Dai Xingyu to visit Jiang Lvlv at the hospital and confirm whether the matter was completely resolved.

Arriving at the entrance of the inpatient department, they inquired about Jiang Lvlv’s room and made their way there.

Room 507.

Pushing the door open, they saw Jiang Lvlv sitting on the hospital bed. One arm was hooked to an IV drip, while the other waved animatedly in the air, as if sketching something unseen. Her facial expressions were vivid.

A person who appeared to be a plainclothes officer was keeping her company nearby.

When Xie Qingling and Dai Xingyu entered, the plainclothes officer paused his conversation with Jiang Lvlv and stepped out to give them privacy.

The moment Jiang Lvlv saw Xie Qingling, she rushed over, wrapped her arms around Xie Qingling’s waist, and burst into loud sobs.

“Waaah… it was so scary, so scary,” Jiang Lvlv cried. “I thought I’d never see you again.”

Xie Qingling comforted her and asked, “What happened? Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Jiang Lvlv replied emotionally, unaware of the full story. “I just encountered a couple of psychopaths they were truly insane!!! They tied me up and cut off my contact with the outside world. But then they made me reach out to my parents to come find me. The more I thought about it, the more wrong it felt. I suspected I’d fallen into a pyramid scheme, so I sent you that message.”

“Thank goodness, thank goodness I’m okay. I wasn’t locked up for too long. The police officers rescued me, wuwuwuwu… That pyramid scheme den was really too terrifying, wuwuwu… They actually wanted to target my entire family…”

Xie Qingling: “…”

She really didn’t know whether to call Jiang Lvlv lucky or unlucky.

Although Jiang Lvlv hadn’t suffered any physical injuries, it was clear her Spirit had been severely traumatized.

Xie Qingling comforted her: “It’s alright now, everything’s fine. Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”

Jiang Lvlv’s crying suddenly stopped when she noticed Dai Xingyu’s completely unfamiliar face. Not expecting there to be an outsider present, she immediately felt somewhat embarrassed. She shook her head, wiped away her tears, and became much more composed.

Dai Xingyu quietly asked Xie Qingling, “I don’t sense any ghostly presence anymore. What about you?”

Xie Qingling also shook her head.

Still somewhat concerned, Dai Xingyu asked again: “Is the feeling right this time? Is she really your friend now?”

Before Xie Qingling could respond after thinking for a moment, Jiang Lvlv on the hospital bed – having maintained her composure for less than three seconds – sniffled, then clenched her fists and angrily punched the hospital bed several times. With an enraged expression, she declared: “Violating my personal freedom rights, illegally confining me – and calling it a law firm? Clearly it’s a lawless territory! Those two outlaws, I’m going to sue them until they’re bankrupt!!!”

“This time it’s right.” Xie Qingling said with absolute certainty. “That’s just how Lvlv is.”
