Chapter 34
The mineral water bottle in her hand suddenly felt scalding hot.
“Jiang Lvlv” didn’t know whether to throw it away or drink it.
As she looked at her “friend” Xie Qingling standing before her, she suddenly felt this was a tricky situation.
This human was more difficult to deal with than she had imagined.
At this point, there was no need to continue pretending anymore.
Because the Huapi Ghost truly couldn’t consume human food.
She had already revealed a fatal flaw though she didn’t know how it had happened, since she thought her disguise had been perfect. Unlike those foolish parents who couldn’t even properly imitate laughter or tears.
“Jiang Lvlv” threw away the mineral water bottle and let out a wild, arrogant laugh, her expression twisting with evil. Though it was Jiang Lvlv’s face, it no longer resembled Jiang Lvlv at all.
“I don’t understand,” she said. “Where exactly did I slip up? When did you start suspecting me?”
The Huapi Ghost was utterly curious.
It had thought its disguise skills were sophisticated enough to deceive everyone.
To fail like this it was deeply unsatisfied.
It wanted to know why it had failed.
By learning from this failure, no one would be able to detect its flaws next time.
As for this woman Xie Qingling, it only needed to eliminate her here, and then no one would know its identity.
It could just change faces and continue living as a human.
“Back in the underground parking lot,” Xie Qingling said. “We were all under an Illusion, unable to distinguish friend from foe, without proper perception or awareness.”
“My teammates have all received professional training. Even when under the Illusion, their behavior became uncontrollable. So why were you, as an ‘ordinary person’, so calm after being mentally controlled by the Huapi Ghost? You didn’t even show any intention of suddenly attacking anyone. That’s when I started thinking you were hiding something from me at the very least, there must be some hidden circumstances regarding you being mentally controlled by the Huapi Ghost.”
The Huapi Ghost nodded, seeming thoughtful. “So you tested me? But at that time, you still thought I was just heavily controlled. Why did you suddenly confirm I wasn’t ‘Jiang Lvlv’? Just because of the food?”
Xie Qingling replied, “Of course it wasn’t just because of the food. Actually, the food was merely my speculation. Back in the underground parking lot, the reason I wasn’t sure if you were the Huapi Ghost was because I couldn’t figure out your motive if you were the Huapi Ghost, why would you deliberately let us kill your parents?”
“But just now, when I confirmed you were the Huapi Ghost, I figured it out. Your motive makes sense now too.”
The Huapi Ghost grew even more interested, as if it wasn’t the one being interrogated. “Oh? How did you confirm it?”
“Because of empathy,” Xie Qingling said, her eyes suddenly turning much colder. “You want to become human, but you lack human emotions. Two people or maybe three had just died, yet your behavior was too happy, too excited, as if you didn’t care about death at all. But my friend is a person full of righteousness. She would never act like that.”
The Huapi Ghost’s eyes suddenly lit up, agreeing with Xie Qingling’s perspective. It nodded excitedly and said, “Yes, you’re absolutely right. It seems my disguise isn’t perfect yet. If I can just demonstrate empathy, even someone like you wouldn’t be able to see through my disguise, right?”
“Excellent! I think I finally understand how to perfectly disguise myself as a human.” The Huapi Ghost trembled with excitement. “So the key is to first possess human emotions.”
Xie Qingling shook her head, her expression cold. “Actually, I believe you’ll never be able to become a true human.”
“Why?! How can you say that?! I’m the closest to human among all Huapi Ghosts!” The ghost’s voice cracked with agitation, sounding as if it came from beyond the heavens, no longer resembling a human voice at all.
“Why? It seems you’ve completely stopped caring about your parents’ deaths.” Xie Qingling’s voice turned icy. “Since that’s the case, let’s start from that phone call.”
“Yesterday at four in the evening, Lülü sent me a help message on WeChat. I suspect that message was sent by Lülü herself. Later when I called her, the person who answered was you, or your parents – in any case, it wasn’t Lülü.”
“Through that phone call, you learned my address. The next day, you came looking for me. Perhaps you wanted my skin, or maybe you didn’t want me to spread the story and cause trouble. In any case, your initial goal was to kill me.”
The Huapi Ghost nodded. “Correct.”
“But at the entrance, you discovered the guardian Qilin protecting the residence, making it impossible for you to enter my office. You never expected such ancient energy to still exist in the mortal world, and that I wasn’t as easy to deal with as you imagined. So you quietly changed your plan.”
The Huapi Ghost’s expression began to darken.
Xie Qingling continued, “After learning about our ability to kill ghosts, you became afraid. Your goal shifted to surviving safely. And this so-called safety meant gaining our complete trust, making us believe you were a victim so we would protect you. That’s why you started lying through your teeth, deceiving me – you were never controlled by any Huapi Ghost.”
“But how could mere lies be enough? Flimsy lies are easily exposed, which would only make your identity more suspicious. To gain our trust and convince us of your harmlessness, you decided to sacrifice your teammates – your parents.”
“In just half a day, you transformed from a perpetrator into a victim, joining our side to condemn your own parents. Your parents were nothing but your ticket to acceptance. If successful, you’d become humanity’s hero. If failed, no matter – you could just remain a ghost.”
“Right? Am I correct?”
Xie Qingling finished speaking.
The Huapi Ghost laughed heartily. “No wonder we’ve never been able to perfectly disguise ourselves as humans. It turns out there are many clever people among humans. Your guess is absolutely correct – I originally went there to kill you.”
Xie Qingling shook her head and said, “Wrong. The reason you can’t become human isn’t because you lack intelligence, but… you creatures who believe in the law of the jungle have no humanity. We humans, through long evolution, have developed emotions that don’t belong to nature – that’s the altruistic attribute, the sense of morality.”
“The altruistic attribute completely violates the survival rules of the natural world, yet we find joy in it. Some people even sacrifice their lives for it. And you, these filthy things, only deserve to be animals, stinking bugs in the sewers.”
“You… you… I’ll kill you!!” Xie Qingling had completely enraged the Huapi Ghost, who cursed angrily: “You arrogant humans, looking down on everyone from your high horses! You’ll pay for your arrogance one day!”
The Huapi Ghost cursed wildly: “After I kill you, I’ll skin you and make a lantern out of your hide. I’ll make you watch how I live in the human world!”
“Oh, since you’re so smart and capable, why don’t you think about how many times your friend screamed and how many cuts she endured before I skinned her? Aren’t you supposed to be powerful? Could you save your friend? Would you like to hear her painful wails before death? That was truly a beautiful symphony! And you’re just a weak, pitiful, boastful, and malicious human!”
Xie Qingling’s face turned cold as she quickly drew the handgun from her leg and aimed it at the Huapi Ghost.
She said, “Don’t try to provoke me, it’s meaningless. In the underground parking lot, I touched ‘Yang Zhenhua’s’ skin and yours too. Your skins are different – this skin isn’t Lü Lü’s. Although I ultimately didn’t become an outstanding forensic doctor, my professional competence shouldn’t be underestimated.”
The Huapi Ghost was left speechless with rage.
The two stood in tense confrontation, the atmosphere ready to explode at any moment.
It stared at Xie Qingling with hatred, then after a moment, let out a strange cackling laugh.
“You’re really hard to fool. Your friend isn’t actually dead. I’m currently possessing your friend’s body – the effect of possession is different from directly using someone’s skin.” The Huapi Ghost touched its face triumphantly. “Want to shoot me? Go ahead. I’m currently in your friend’s body. At worst, we’ll die together.”
“Trading your friend’s life for your human hero medal – how about it? Quite worth it, right?”
The Huapi Ghost mocked freely: “Weren’t you just preaching about benevolence and morality? Then show me how high your enlightenment is! Go ahead and shoot if you dare!”
Xie Qingling had been staring intently at the Huapi Ghost, then suddenly laughed.
“What are you laughing at?” Seeing her laugh, the Huapi Ghost felt a sense of foreboding, even making its scalp tingle.
Xie Qingling said, “I’m laughing at your naivety.”
“Since you already know that the human world has developed rapidly and is no longer what it used to be, why haven’t you considered that our weapons have also improved?”
“This gun in my hand is specially designed to deal with Spirit creatures like you who love to possess others.”
She said, “Inside is an air bullet, which doesn’t actually exist as a physical projectile. Its effect is that it only harms ghosts possessing humans, while being harmless to humans themselves. In other words, I can fire at any time.”
As she spoke, Xie Qingling clicked off the safety with a “clack” and swiftly aimed the muzzle at the Huapi Ghost.
The Huapi Ghost’s face turned pale, its body reacting faster than its mind
It shed the skin it was wearing, revealing its true, hideous appearance while simultaneously regaining its abilities as a ghost. Then it quickly leaped away, fleeing far from its original position.
That was close.
It had nearly been shot by that vicious human. The Huapi Ghost felt a lingering fear.
But… there was still a strange feeling in its heart.
Xie Qingling looked at the shed skin piled on the ground and murmured, “You weren’t possessing Lülü. You lied to me.”
The Huapi Ghost instantly felt somewhat proud.
But before it could fully savor that pride, Xie Qingling spoke again.
“Though we’re even now.”
“I was lying to you too just now.”
With a “bang,” Xie Qingling fired the gun. “What air bullet? What only harming ghosts without hurting humans? There’s no such thing.”
The Huapi Ghost froze for a moment before realizing it had been tricked.
Its face twisted with rage. “You deceitful, vicious human! I’ll kill you!!!!”
