Chapter 33

Seeing Yang Xianxian’s sweet smile, everyone instinctively tightened their grips on their weapons, ready to fight at any moment.

Spontaneously forming a circle around Yang Xianxian, they positioned themselves strategically.

Jiang Lvlv peeked out from behind Xie Qingling’s back, her eyes filled with lingering fear and panic.

The atmosphere was tense enough to hear a pin drop, charged with imminent conflict.

After a moment, Ling Fang said to Shen Huaizhou, “Release your Illusion on her. Let’s see.”

Shen Huaizhou nodded and dispelled the Illusion. Yang Xianxian emerged from the Illusionary Realm.

Blinking her eyes, she saw no sign of her parents only a group of uncles and aunts holding strangely shaped weapons surrounding her. Her small face instantly turned pale.

Yang Xianxian burst into loud sobs: “Bad people! You’re all bad people! Where are my mom and dad? Give them back to me!”

Scanning the crowd, she singled out Yu Wei, who appeared the most intimidating, and began punching and kicking him: “Bad guy! Bad guy!! I’m calling the police to arrest you! You big meanie!”

But it was just childish flailing.

The normal strength of a little girl wasn’t even enough to tickle Yu Wei.

Yu Wei’s grip tightened and loosened on his large blade. Staring down at the girl who barely reached his thigh, his expression grew heavy with conflict and helplessness.

He looked uncertainly toward Ling Fang: “Department Head…”

In fact, not only Yu Wei, but everyone else also turned to Ling Fang, awaiting his instructions.

Facing a child who seemed completely human should they really attack?

What if it was a misunderstanding?

What if there were hidden circumstances?

Though they all held their weapons, no one made a move.

The Huapi Ghost troublesome, extremely troublesome.

Ling Fang sighed. “Shen Huaizhou, cast the Illusion again. Restrain her for now.”

With another Mirage, Yang Xianxian slipped back into boundless sweet dreams.

In her dreams, she was always waiting for her parents to take her home, with the most delicious fried chicken awaiting her.

Yang Xianxian quieted down, her tear-streaked face blooming with a hopeful smile. The scene fell into silence once more.

Ling Fang said, “Old Yu and Shen Huaizhou, guard Yang Xianxian. Monitor her condition closely. If she is the Huapi Ghost, prevent her from suddenly attacking anyone, and protect yourselves.”

“Ye Anran, stay and assist. I don’t want any more casualties.”

“Understood.”

“Received.”

“Received.”

Ling Fang looked at Dai Xingyu. “Dai Xingyu, return to the department with me to research the archives. Also, request instructions from headquarters to see if there’s any way to quickly confirm Yang Xianxian’s identity.”

“Understood.”

Finally, Xie Qingling.

Ling Fang glanced at Xie Qingling, then at Jiang Lvlv.

He said, “Xie Qingling, you’re responsible for settling your friend. After the Yang Xianxian situation is resolved, we’ll discuss how to handle your friend’s case.”

“Understood.”

Thus, Yu Wei, Shen Huaizhou, and Ye Anran remained in the Killing Field to keep watch over Yang Xianxian.

Ling Fang and Dai Xingyu returned to the office to search for solutions.

As for Xie Qingling, she stayed with Jiang Lvlv.

Exiting the underground parking lot, Xie Qingling asked Jiang Lvlv, “Lvlv, where do you need to go? I’ll give you a ride.”

“I left something at the law firm. Just drop me off there I’ll grab it and leave,” Jiang Lvlv said.

The trip from the youth center to the law firm would take about fifteen minutes.

Xie Qingling thought for a moment, then nodded. “Alright, get on.”

The two mounted the motorcycle and soon left the youth center behind.

After resolving the Huapi Ghost incident, Xie Qingling didn’t ride too fast, maintaining a normal speed as they traveled smoothly along the road.

While driving, Xie Qingling asked, “After you pick up your things at the law firm, should I take you back to school? Jiajia has been quite worried about you these past few days.”

“Mm! Of course!” Jiang Lvlv wrapped her arms around Xie Qingling’s waist, resting her cheek against her back, and said with a laugh, “Qingling, I’m so glad I met you! You’re my very best friend!”

Xie Qingling ignored her sentiment and instead asked, “Once you’re back at school, what are your plans? Keep job hunting? Or… take a break first?”

“Definitely keep job hunting!” Jiang Lvlv’s tone was brimming with enthusiasm, full of anticipation and longing for the future. “After everything that happened, I understand even more how precious and beautiful life is. I survived against the odds I won’t waste this second chance.”

“I don’t want to drift aimlessly or waste time. I want to truly enjoy this life. The world is so vast, and there are so many things I haven’t tried yet. I want to experience them all. I’ll climb mountains, watch the most beautiful sunrise over the sea how could I let this setback defeat me? Don’t worry, I won’t be beaten down!”

Just then, they reached a traffic light, and the motorcycle came to a stop.

Though she didn’t turn around, Xie Qingling could imagine Jiang Lvlv speaking these words with a smile and hopeful expression.

Jiang Lvlv’s mood was so light she seemed on the verge of humming.

Xie Qingling gave a vague “Mm” in response.

Soon, the left-turn signal turned green. Xie Qingling made the turn, following the flow of traffic.

Jiang Lvlv paused, then reminded her, “You took the wrong turn, Qingling. This isn’t the way to the firm.”

“It’s fine. It’s all the same,” Xie Qingling said. “I’m taking a shortcut.”

“Oh, then hurry up, okay?”

The motorcycle continued until it reached a relatively remote stretch of road.

The sidewalks on either side were nearly empty, with only the occasional roar of passing cars breaking the silence.

Jiang Lvlv glanced around, about to ask if they were lost, when Xie Qingling proactively pulled over.

She removed her helmet, swung her leg off the bike, and without looking back, said to Jiang Lvlv, “I’m thirsty. I’m going to buy some water.”

With that, she walked toward a lone convenience store standing by the roadside.

Set up in such a sparsely populated area, the store saw few customers, and the owner showed little interest in serving them. Hearing footsteps, he merely glanced lazily from his recliner and told the customer to help themselves.

Xie Qingling took two bottles of water from the cooler, pulled out her phone, tapped it a few times, then paid the owner.

After finishing all this, Xie Qingling didn’t rush to leave. Instead, she leaned against the counter and said something to the shop owner.

About five minutes passed.

Xie Qingling still hadn’t come out of the small shop. Jiang Lvlv watched her from a distance, her patience gradually wearing thin.

Just as she was about to walk over and ask what was going on, Xie Qingling emerged from the shop carrying two bottles of water.

Tossing one bottle toward Jiang Lvlv, Xie Qingling gulped down half of her own bottle before saying, “I’m too hungry. After that fight earlier, I’m a bit tired and need to replenish some energy.”

“You should drink too,” Xie Qingling said.

Jiang Lvlv held the water bottle but shook her head. “I’m not thirsty yet.”

“Oh, I see.”

Xie Qingling returned to the motorcycle but didn’t get on. Instead, she stood beside it, calmly studying Jiang Lvlv with a few thoughtful glances.

Jiang Lvlv grew confused and irritated under her gaze. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Nothing, I’m just thinking about some things.”

Xie Qingling suddenly asked, “Lvlv, our department head is quite good-looking, right? I think he’s quite handsome.”

“Huh?”

Jiang Lvlv was taken aback, not understanding why Xie Qingling would bring this up out of nowhere, but she played along: “I think so too. Your department head is indeed quite handsome! Are you saying you’re interested in him?”

Xie Qingling shook her head. “I just find it strange.”

“Since you think the department head’s skin is attractive, the Huapi Ghost should like it too. Why haven’t you made a move?”

“W-what?” Jiang Lvlv froze.

“I’m saying, as a human male, the department head’s skin should satisfy the Huapi Ghost. So why haven’t you, who’s supposedly controlled by the Huapi Ghost, tried to take it?” Xie Qingling asked her. “Didn’t you say your mind was controlled by the Huapi Ghost, filled with nothing but the urge to kill? The department head kept you close but was always guarded around you, yet you never made a move.”

Jiang Lvlv’s already pale face turned even whiter. She forced a dry laugh. “I… I wanted to, but I’m no match for him… I couldn’t do it.”

“If you’re so weak that you won’t act when you can’t succeed, what’s the point of the Huapi Ghost controlling you? From what I see, even under control, your mind seems quite clear. You’re so good at assessing situations very much like a normal, awake human.”

Jiang Lvlv’s face turned green with anger. She asked coldly, “What do you mean? What are you trying to imply? As a friend, isn’t this going too far?”

Xie Qingling just looked at her without speaking.

“I’ve done nothing to cause trouble, have I? I’ve taken care of myself, haven’t I? If you don’t want to help, just say so. What’s the point of being sarcastic afterward? If you don’t want me as a friend anymore, then I won’t bother you in the future! Let’s go our separate ways!” Jiang Lvlv said angrily.

Xie Qingling remained expressionless.

After a moment, Xie Qingling sighed softly and said, “Lvlv, back in the underground parking lot, I told you something.”

“What was it?”

“The Huapi Ghost is dead, so the mind control it placed on you should have disappeared.”

“So what?”

“Actually, I don’t know whether a ghost’s abilities disappear along with its destruction,” Xie Qingling said softly. “I lied to you. But you you didn’t hesitate at all before saying it disappeared. What a coincidence, Lvlv.”

Jiang Lvlv’s face turned an unpleasant shade of green.

“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about. All I know is that the Huapi Ghost’s control has disappeared. I told you everything I could sense.”

“Up until that point, I only suspected you might have deceived me about something. Even if all those ghost stories you told me from the beginning were complete lies, I still thought you were Jiang Lvlv, my friend. I thought maybe you were under a deeper level of control by the Huapi Ghost without realizing it. I was still thinking about how to help you break free from the control and return to normal.”

Xie Qingling faced Jiang Lvlv directly, her expression growing increasingly serious.

“But now, I’m almost certain you are the third Huapi Ghost. You’re not my friend,” Xie Qingling stated.

Jiang Lvlv chuckled. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re the one who said the Huapi Ghosts were a family of three. What does that have to do with me? If you keep this up, I’m going to get angry.”

Ignoring her, Xie Qingling glanced at the unopened water bottle in Jiang Lvlv’s hand and suddenly asked, “From the moment we met until now, you haven’t consumed anything, have you?”

“You haven’t drunk from that water bottle in your hand this whole time. Are you not thirsty, or is it because Huapi Ghosts can’t eat human food?”
