Chapter 30

Xie Qingling held the property management girl and stepped back, then pushed her away with one hand.

The property management girl’s body had stiffened like a piece of wood. After leaving Xie Qingling’s embrace, her body suddenly seemed to lose all strength, forcing her to lean against the wall to stand upright.

Although she hadn’t witnessed the scene inside firsthand, just imagining it combined with the nauseating smell made it impossible to maintain a normal complexion.

“I… I’ll call the police, I’ll call the police…” the property management girl said distractedly.

“No, we’ll handle matters here. Don’t make this known. Act as if you never came here. Now return to your post and make sure no one comes down to the second basement level,” Xie Qingling’s chillingly calm voice came through again.

The property management girl froze, about to say she couldn’t do it, but when she met Xie Qingling’s gentle gaze, she suddenly found courage.

She said: “Alright, I trust you.”

Rapid footsteps echoed as the property management girl departed, leaving only Xie Qingling and Dai Xingyu on site.

As for Dai Xingyu, being a man, he didn’t receive the same considerate treatment as the property management girl.

He leaned against the wall vomiting while Xie Qingling offered no words of comfort, instead walking directly into the storage room to examine the two corpses that had already begun to rot and emit foul odors.

The skins had been completely stripped from the corpses, leaving bloody flesh exposed to the air. Combined with the considerable time since death, the enclosed small space was filled with a terrible stench – no wonder Dai Xingyu was vomiting so violently.

Xie Qingling remained expressionless, calmly examining the corpses’ condition.

Having previously trained as a forensic pathologist, Xie Qingling had long anticipated encountering such situations, so this remained within her psychological tolerance.

“Minister,” Xie Qingling contacted Ling Fang, “we’ve found the victims’ bodies – one female, one male. Preliminary assessment suggests they’re Yang Zhenhua and his wife.”

“The corpses’ skins have been stripped off by the Huapi Ghost, making it impossible to determine time of death based on lividity and other characteristics. However, the bodies have developed ‘bloated appearance’ with swollen limbs and abdomen. Judging by the degree of swelling combined with the basement environment, they’ve likely been dead for at least a week.”

Though Ling Fang couldn’t see the scene firsthand while listening to Xie Qingling’s report, he could well imagine that the situation was quite grim.

The Huapi Ghost not only possessed strong concealment abilities but also employed exceptionally cruel methods.

Such a Spirit absolutely cannot be allowed to survive until tomorrow.

Ling Fang said: “Dai Xingyu will handle the corpses. Xie Qingling, find a way to Yang Zhenhua’s home to confirm their current precise location.”

Xie Qingling glanced back at Dai Xingyu, who was vomiting miserably, but didn’t expose his current wretched state, only saying: “Minister, I don’t think Dai Xingyu can handle it.”

“Corpse giant? Based on observations, this phenomenon occurs when bacteria inhabiting the human body after death reproduce uncontrollably, producing large amounts of gas. When the gas cannot be released, it eventually inflates the corpse. At this point, there’s a significant pressure difference between the inside and outside of the body. Movement could easily cause a pressure explosion leading to secondary damage. Professionals must handle this.”

Xie Qingling said, “After dealing with the Huapi Ghost, we’ll call the police. For now, let’s not alert them.”

After a moment of silence, Ling Fang on the other end nodded, “We’ll proceed as you suggest.”

Once the course of action was determined, Xie Qingling dragged out the “Construction in Progress, Keep Away” sign from the utility room, securely cordoning off the storage room. Then she patted Dai Xingyu’s shoulder: “Finished vomiting? Time to work.”

Dai Xingyu caught his breath, wiping his mouth as he followed along, simultaneously filled with awe and respect for Xie Qingling.

The two took the elevator up from the basement level 2, returning to the property management center.

The property management girl who had followed them downstairs earlier was now sitting at her desk, pale-faced and dazed.

When she saw Xie Qingling, the light in her eyes gradually focused, and she seemed to feel more at ease.

Leaning against the counter, Xie Qingling asked, “The residential complex has building intercom systems installed, right? Could you help us call the owner of unit 1303?”

“Yes, we do.” Though extremely nervous, the property management girl obediently picked up the phone and dialed 1303.

The “beep beep” tone sounded for about a minute, but the call never connected.

The property management girl shook her head, saying, “The owner isn’t home.”

Xie Qingling and Dai Xingyu exchanged glances.

They left the property management center and took the elevator to the 13th floor.

They decided to investigate Yang Zhenhua’s situation themselves.

Arriving at unit 1303 and seeing the tightly shut door, Xie Qingling was about to kick it open when Dai Xingyu immediately stopped her.

“…Let me do it.”

Dai Xingyu pulled out a device, connected it to the electronic lock, pressed a few buttons, and with a “beep,” the door swung open.

The interior was indeed empty, with no one inside.

Xie Qingling took a deep breath and said, “There’s the smell of decaying corpses.”

Though not as strong as in the basement, it still lingered faintly in the air, detectable to those with sensitive senses of smell.

Dai Xingyu also nodded, “It seems they’ve been living here for some time.”

The two reported this information to Ling Fang.

Yang Zhenhua wasn’t home…

Ling Fang fell silent in thought. After a moment, he said, “Check the law firm.”

When unable to immediately locate someone, considering their work and home locations often yielded success, especially since Yang Zhenhua was a workaholic.

But just as Ling Fang finished speaking, Jiang Lvlv beside him immediately grabbed his clothes and urgently said, “No, that’s not right. Not the law firm.”

Ling Fang looked at her in surprise, first halting the team’s movement, then turned back and asked, “Why do you say that?”

Jiang Lvlv took a deep breath and said, “Although the boss likes making us work overtime, he never works overtime himself. The probability of him being at the law firm during this time is low. I know where he is.”

“Where?”

“He should be at the Children’s Palace.” Jiang Lvlv’s tone was full of certainty. “The boss is a man who cares deeply about his family. Whenever he has free time, he spends it with his wife and child. Right now, he’s probably at the Children’s Palace waiting for his daughter to finish her dance class.”

Jiang Lvlv glanced at the time it was 11:45 in the morning. “The morning classes are about to end.”

Ling Fang’s furrowed brows never relaxed as he stared intently at her.

Was she a battle maniac like her friend?

Why did she seem so eager to charge into the fray, looking impatient?

Jiang Lvlv urged anxiously, “Really! I want them dead more than any of you! I won’t hold you back!”

After a moment’s thought, Ling Fang asked Dai Xingyu, “How long does it take to get to the law firm and the Children’s Palace respectively?”

Dai Xingyu replied, “Twenty minutes to the Children’s Palace, half an hour to the law firm.”

Ling Fang quickly made a decision: “Yu Wei, Ye Anran, Shen Huaizhou, come with me to check the Children’s Palace first. Dai Xingyu and Xie Qingling follow afterward.”

“Received.”

The others on standby also received the instructions and immediately headed toward the Children’s Palace.

Jiang Lvlv remained quietly seated behind Ling Fang on the Motorcycle, just as she had promised doing her best not to hold them back.

Children’s Palace.

The long, melodious chime rang out. It was noon, and classes were over.

The ballet teacher stopped teaching, sighing as she watched the children instantly turn chaotic in the classroom.

“That’s all for today. Remember to practice your basics when you go home, don’t neglect them.” Though she said this, most children here treated it as a hobby class and might drop out anytime. They verbally acknowledged her words but hardly took them to heart.

The teacher was used to their sporadic attendance.

However, among these children, one stood out for her earnest and diligent practice.

Her name was Yang Xianxian, a hardworking and intelligent child.

While the other students hurriedly packed their bags to leave, only Yang Xianxian meticulously completed her final movement before bidding the teacher farewell.

“Goodbye, teacher.”

The teacher smiled. “Goodbye, Xianxian. Are your parents here to pick you up again?”

Yang Xianxian nodded.

Outside the dance classroom, through the clear floor-to-ceiling windows, one could see a middle-aged couple standing in the corridor, arm in arm, smiling happily and looking deeply in love.

They were Yang Zhenhua and his wife.

All the teachers at the Children’s Palace who had taught Yang Xianxian knew how much this couple adored their precious daughter. They came together every day to drop her off and pick her up, rain or shine.

What a happy and perfect family.

The teacher couldn’t help but pat her head and say, “Xianxian, you’re so lucky to have parents who love you very, very much.”

Yang Xianxian tilted her head and smiled, her bright eyes shining like freshly washed grapes curving into crescents. She said, “Teacher, it’s getting late. I have to go now.”

Glancing down at the time, she saw it was 12:15.

The teacher nodded, waving goodbye to her while also smiling and nodding at the couple standing in the corridor.

The couple’s faces still bore brilliantly radiant smiles, looking exceptionally joyful.

Suddenly, the teacher shivered, sensing something slightly eerie.

Because the curvature of the couple’s smiles was almost identical…

Must be overthinking it.

The teacher patted her cheeks and looked again, only to find the corridor now empty the couple had vanished.

Yang Xianxian held her father’s hand with one hand and her mother’s with the other, happily descending the stairs.

Her parents had promised to take her for fried chicken today.

For a child, being allowed to eat such fried food was the happiest thing imaginable.

But…

“Mom, Dad,” Yang Xianxian sniffed her own clothes and frowned, “why do I feel like I smell a bit strange?”

Her mother gently reassured her, “No, there’s no smell at all.”

“Oh, alright then.” Yang Xianxian quickly let it go.

The family of three made their way to the underground parking lot of the youth center.

The tap-tap-tapping of their footsteps echoed through the dimly lit parking garage, creating a slightly unsettling atmosphere.

Strangely, besides her and her parents, there was no one else in the parking lot today.

How odd.

Just as Yang Xianxian was about to say something, a deep male voice suddenly sounded in her ears: “Veil the eyes.”

Instantly, the world before Yang Xianxian’s eyes twisted and distorted her parents disappeared from view!

“Dad! Mom!” Yang Xianxian screamed.
