Chapter 27
The next day, Xie Qingling wore a black long skirt over her black leggings. Elegantly crossing her legs, she sat by the conference table, copying the Work Guidelines for the tenth time.
At exactly nine in the morning, the first to push the door open and enter were Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu.
Seeing how Xie Qingling had transformed in just one short day, Dai Xingyu and Ye Anran froze, their expressions turning quite interesting.
Then, Dai Xingyu’s astonished voice rang out: “Wow Brother Shen has taught the newcomer to be so… twisted.”
Xie Qingling: “…”
“…Shut up, quick!” Ye Anran whispered.
As the only one who had truly fought alongside Xie Qingling, Ye Anran understood deeply that Xie Qingling didn’t need any teaching she was already plenty twisted on her own.
“Good morning,” Xie Qingling greeted them. “I’ve already brewed coffee for you.”
After just two days of interaction, Xie Qingling had roughly figured out everyone’s simple habits in the department for example, almost everyone here practically lived with coffee in hand.
This probably had to do with their long-term high-pressure environment of being on constant standby.
The caffeine in coffee helped keep them somewhat energized.
Ye Anran immediately smiled. “Then we won’t stand on ceremony!”
Dai Xingyu and Ye Anran sat on the sofa, leisurely sipping their coffee while preparing for the day’s work though, to be honest, staying on duty in the department involved pitifully little work, even to the point of being boring.
Not long after, Yu Wei arrived as well.
“Good morning, everyone.” Yu Wei sat down next to Xie Qingling and got straight to the point: “You went on a field assignment with Shen Huaizhou yesterday did you see a Spirit?”
“Yes.”
At that, Ye Anran and Dai Xingyu were drawn in, pricking up their ears to listen.
Yu Wei said, “It seems your talent is related to ‘seeing Spirits,’ similar to Dai Xingyu in that regard.”
“There are some similarities, but not exactly the same.” Xie Qingling thought for a moment, unsure how to describe her ability, and chose to be vague.
After all, she couldn’t very well say she was a woman with her own built-in narrator, could she?
Dai Xingyu’s face instantly turned pale, and he grew restless.
He was even gripped by a panic of possibly losing his job and couldn’t sit still.
“I’m going on a field assignment today,” Dai Xingyu said. “I’ll find a few more Spirits. When it comes to seeing Spirits, the Herdsman is the professional.
After all, “seeing Spirits” was the Herdsman’s talent. With a newcomer directly undermining Dai Xingyu’s uniqueness, he couldn’t help but panic.
Ye Anran soothed him, “What’s the rush? Her responsibilities aren’t the same as yours she’s in charge of charging ahead, you’re in charge of holding the rear.”
“Is that how the department head arranged it?”
“…No, I just guessed.” Ye Anran glanced at Xie Qingling, thinking to herself that with Xie Qingling’s reckless drive, it would be impossible to expect her to coordinate from the back lines anyway.
Generally, during cleanup operations, Yu Wei was the one responsible for charging at the front, while Ye Anran provided support and healing.
The department head and Shen Huaizhou took turns controlling the field, with the other assisting Yu Wei.
This arrangement is perfectly fine, but sometimes, when facing particularly troublesome opponents, manpower can feel quite stretched, and firepower becomes insufficient.
Because Yu Wei is only an Acquired Spirit, no matter how strong his combat skills are, he has his limits.
As for Shen Huaizhou, he’s an Illusionist, leaning more towards control and support-type buffs.
As for the department head, she’s all about equipment. If she has her gear, she’s in the game; without it, she’s practically useless.
So generally, the department head is the one responsible for holding the rear and controlling the field.
The main damage output relies on Shen Huaizhou and Yu Wei.
Now, there’s an additional member: Xie Qingling.
At first, Ye Anran thought Xie Qingling was also inclined towards control and support, but after sparring with her once, Ye Anran deeply understood that this newcomer, who possesses a Mystical Power similar to summoning, is a powerful damage dealer…
Ye Anran’s healing pressure instantly lightened considerably.
She has high hopes for Xie Qingling.
Just as she was thinking this, Xie Qingling said, “Brother Yu, got time to give me a few pointers?”
Yu Wei nodded, “Sure, let’s head to the training room.”
The so-called training room was actually the backyard of the small Western-style building, repurposed.
The space was quite ample, with several wooden posts and sandbags along the edges for sparring practice, along with some fitness equipment.
Xie Qingling drew Blood Oath, gripping it with both hands and assuming a stance.
Yesterday, she had learned a few moves from Shen Huaizhou, and her stance looked quite proper.
The moment Yu Wei saw Xie Qingling’s reverse grip on the dagger, his eyes lit up, and he asked her, “Reverse grip have you trained in this before?”
“During university military training, we practiced dagger drills. The instructor taught it this way.”
Yu Wei nodded, came over to correct her posture, and explained, “In the military, dagger grips can generally be divided into two types: forward grip and reverse grip.”
“The main difference between these two grips lies in the orientation of the blade blade facing down is a forward grip, blade facing up is a reverse grip.”
Yu Wei took Blood Oath and demonstrated a forward grip for Xie Qingling. As he executed flicking, slashing, and chopping motions, Blood Oath danced fiercely in his hands, the bloodthirsty aura striking straight at the face, a stark contrast to Yu Wei’s usual gentle demeanor.
“With a forward grip, the dagger is more agile, and retracting it is quicker. You can flexibly adjust the angle and direction of your attacks, making them more concealed and equally lethal. The drawback is that some horizontal slicing motions can’t be performed. Conversely, a reverse grip can accomplish that.”
As Yu Wei demonstrated, Xie Qingling understood clearly and nodded, saying, “I see.”
“Next is the reverse grip.”
Yu Wei handed the dagger back to her, “Try feeling the force exertion of the reverse grip yourself.”
Following Yu Wei’s instructions, Xie Qingling experimented with a reverse grip, making a few slicing motions back and forth.
Yu Wei asked, “Do you feel that, compared to the forward grip, the reverse grip allows you to wield the dagger with more power?”
“Yes… it’s the biceps and triceps,” Xie Qingling’s eyes instantly brightened, “These are the two most developed muscles in the human arm. And because the angle of force exertion matches the natural curvature of the arm, the body has muscle memory, so the power comes more swiftly and naturally.”
Yu Wei nodded appreciatively and said, “As expected of someone who studied anatomy. Some blockheads study for ages but never grasp it properly.”
Xie Qingling remained silent. She wasn’t curious about who the blockheads Yu Wei mentioned were, or how many there might be. After all, knowing too much isn’t always a good thing.
Yu Wei continued explaining to Xie Qingling, “The reverse grip offers greater explosive power and strength, but it also has its drawbacks. The strike is less concealed, and if you miss, retracting the blade is slower and less agile. In that brief moment, if facing an opponent with sharp combat instincts, it could be enough time for them to counterattack.”
“After receiving the blessing, your physical strength has significantly improved. However, when facing Spirit Users of the same level, in terms of raw combat power, female physiology is inherently weaker than male biology from a scientific standpoint. Don’t underestimate this slight difference in battles between experts, such nuances often determine life and death. That said, with proper force application techniques and scientific training methods, women can become exceptional warriors even surpassing men.”
“Both grips have their advantages and disadvantages. Since you have two blades, you can hold one with a standard grip and the other with a reverse grip. This allows flexible offense while compensating for any lack of explosive power, enhancing your overall strength.”
By now, both Blood Oath blades had returned to Xie Qingling’s hands. This time, she quickly mastered the correct grip Yu Wei was right, her anatomy background made handling these blades feel natural. Blood Oath felt like weapons inherently suited to her.
“Then, I’ll begin my attack,” Yu Wei announced. His entire demeanor abruptly shifted the gentle, paternal aura vanished, replaced by an overwhelming killing intent and bloodlust.
He now resembled a killing machine brimming with murderous intent. Or rather, he was exactly that.
Raising his palm-wide broadsword, he swung it directly at Xie Qingling’s head.
Xie Qingling raised her blades to block but was still forced back several steps by the impact. Even with her enhanced strength as a Spirit User, the force made her tiger mouth (the web between thumb and index finger) go numb.
Yu Wei was showing no mercy at all!
Gritting her teeth, Xie Qingling began attacking with her rudimentary combat skills and innate fighting instincts.
Clearly, against a seasoned veteran like Yu Wei who had fought his way out of bloody battlefields, a novice like Xie Qingling stood no chance.
In the first round, Xie Qingling lasted only a few moves before being defeated.
Yu Wei’s blade slashed fiercely across her arm, the wound deep enough to reveal bone. Blood Oath flew from her grasp.
Once again, Xie Qingling found herself ragged and bloodied though not visibly apparent, she was seriously injured.
At that moment, Ye Anran happened to pass by carrying coffee. She glanced silently toward them, then flicked a Silver Needle that cast Returning Spring on Xie Qingling before walking away without a word.
Xie Qingling was fully restored.
Tacit understanding was this what teamwork felt like?
One handles the killing, the other handles the burial… no, the healing.
Just as Xie Qingling retrieved her Blood Oath blades, Yu Wei’s sword came attacking again.
Xie Qingling: “…”
She retracted her initial assessment of Yu Wei.
This was not a gentle and honest uncle.
This was a cold-blooded killing machine!!
Half a month passed in succession.
During these ten-plus days, Xie Qingling sparred with Yu Wei. Though often beaten beyond recognition, under Yu Wei’s storm-like brutal training and Ye Anran’s perfectly timed healing, her physical conditioning and combat skills showed visible improvement.
Initially, Xie Qingling couldn’t last more than a few rounds against Yu Wei, but now she could hold out for quite some time and even exchange blows effectively.
Yu Wei struck with a blade-hand technique, sending Xie Qingling flying. She tumbled across the ground, rolling twice before coming to a stop.
“Again,” Yu Wei said.
Xie Qingling remained still for a long moment.
Frowning, Yu Wei walked over to check
Just as he bent down, fluttering skirt hem suddenly blurred his vision.
His eyes dazed momentarily, Yu Wei sensed something was wrong, but before he could react, Xie Qingling instantly scissor-locked his neck with her legs.
Then, Yu Wei felt the world spin as Xie Qingling single-handedly executed a shoulder throw, slamming him hard onto the ground.
As Yu Wei tried to get up, a cold sensation pressed against his neck the Blood Oath was already pressed against his throat.
