Chapter 26
The Killing Field instantly unfurled.
Blocking Shen Huaizhou and Xie Qingling’s path stood a ghost.
This emaciated ghost was engulfed in flames, with occasional tongues of fire licking out, causing it to wail in agony.
Perhaps due to extreme frailty, the Starving Ghost’s overly weak body couldn’t even stand upright, leaving it to crawl and writhe on the ground.
It stretched out a trembling hand toward Xie Qingling and Shen Huaizhou, as if begging for something.
Shen Huaizhou’s face momentarily turned ashen, but quickly returned to normal, even betraying a hint of suppressed excitement.
The newcomer truly was formidable.
Instinctively, Shen Huaizhou asked, “It neither attacks proactively nor leaves. What does it want?”
Xie Qingling said, “It’s begging.”
Shen Huaizhou: “…”
Setting aside the ghost for now, Xie Qingling’s precise judgment was something even Dai Xingyu lacked.
Her talent likely differed from the “Herdsman,” yet in some ways, surpassed it.
Xie Qingling opened the Book of Observation she carried, where information about the Starving Ghost gradually materialized:
Burning with hunger and thirst, withers upon contact with water, has no sustenance to consume. Perpetually tormented by starvation, incapable of harming humans.
“It has never consumed ‘food’ and is too weak to harm anyone,” Xie Qingling explained.
Shen Huaizhou nodded, then produced a Ghost Binding Banner from somewhere.
As he raised it high, the banner fluttered without wind.
“Universe Origin Sect, I am the Spirit Sealer. Arrest Souls and Chase Spirits, locked within.”
Shen Huaizhou chanted the incantation softly, whereupon the Starving Ghost let out a piercing shriek. Wisps of black smoke, tangible as substance, were sucked into the Ghost Binding Banner.
Moments later, the banner’s white surface displayed an image of the Starving Ghost.
She recalled the Crossroad Ghost being captured the same way last time.
“After ghosts are sealed inside, how are they handled?” Ling Fang had mentioned they typically had alternative methods for such ghosts, not immediate destruction.
“They’re crafted by the Department Head into Enslaved Ghosts, harnessing specific abilities to become tools against Fierce Ghosts.”
Xie Qingling asked, “Was this Ghost Binding Banner also made by the Department Head?”
“No, it was produced by the Technology Research and Development Department. The Department Head’s incantations aren’t this cringey,” Shen Huaizhou said. “But the banner only works on minor ghosts with weak energy.”
For a moment, Xie Qingling almost doubted her understanding of the words “Technology Research and Development Department.”
“Let’s continue patroling to see if there are other ghosts,” Shen Huaizhou said, having initially thought today’s field work would be uneventful. But with Xie Qingling’s accurate ghost detection, it’d be a waste not to utilize this ability.
Xie Qingling nodded.
The two wandered around Ping’an Slaughterhouse but found no other ghosts.
However, in the central unloading area, they discovered several mobile water tanks.
Upon inquiry, they learned the slaughterhouse had frequent water outages recently. The water supply bureau claimed no issues when contacted.
While the specific problem was still under investigation, temporary water supply relied on mobile tanks.
Shen Huaizhou told the manager, “Water supply should be restored now.”
The staff turned on a faucet, and sure enough, water gushed out freely.
Incredible!
When she turned back to look at the two figures dressed in black, she found they had already left.
What strange people.
But the staff didn’t ask further questions. Although these black-clad individuals frequently appeared in the slaughterhouse with suspicious behavior, the factory manager had said they were from some department or another, on official business, and should be accommodated.
Xie Qingling and the other walked out of the slaughterhouse.
Suddenly, Shen Huaizhou beside her stopped and said, “The clothes you picked don’t suit you. You have long legs you should wear skirts.”
“……?” Xie Qingling didn’t understand the preferences of a cross-dressing enthusiast, nor did she have any desire to become sisters with one. So she politely declined Shen Huaizhou’s suggestion, “Pants are more convenient for movement.”
Shen Huaizhou looked her up and down several times but said nothing. He simply motioned for her to get on the vehicle and drove off on the heavy motorcycle.
However, this time they weren’t heading back.
Shen Huaizhou drove the motorcycle to a relatively remote road where the surroundings shifted from skyscrapers to mottled, aged low walls full of character.
If she remembered correctly, this was the old city district of Future City that hadn’t been demolished yet.
The area was filled with these dark, dilapidated small buildings and narrow, secluded alleys winding between them.
Xie Qingling glanced around, confused. “Is this our second patrol location?”
“No.”
With that, Shen Huaizhou took the lead into a quiet, isolated alley nearby.
After a moment’s thought, Xie Qingling followed him.
In these old urban areas, the population was mixed. Most residents had already moved away, leaving behind those waiting to live off their parents’ meager inheritance people without skills who relied on their family’s limited assets. These were predominantly men who spent their days idle, gathering together to eat, drink, and engage in debauchery and gambling, easily breeding violent incidents.
Over time, this area had become notorious, with an extremely poor public security environment.
Xie Qingling surveyed the surroundings: the dilapidated houses lining the streets, messy little shops of uncertain purpose, and small eateries with tables and chairs covered in years of grime…
What truly made Xie Qingling uncomfortable were the several burly, pot-bellied men gathered together, staring intently at her and Shen Huaizhou.
Of course, their main focus of attention was Shen Huaizhou that incredibly beautiful “stunning woman.”
Though she couldn’t hear what they were saying, their expressions clearly indicated it was nothing good.
Just as Xie Qingling was about to ask Shen Huaizhou what he intended to do, she saw him suddenly stop, turn back to smile at those men, and even crook his finger in a “come here” gesture.
“……??” Xie Qingling’s mind went completely chaotic.
Then Shen Huaizhou slipped into an even quieter, more deserted side path.
After another moment’s thought, Xie Qingling followed him again.
She asked, “What exactly… are you trying to do?”
“Just finding some people to have fun with.
Xie Qingling’s face darkened, and she was about to leave when those men caught up to them.
Left with no choice, she could only step back and position herself behind Shen Huaizhou.
He was the one who attracted them, so it was only right for him to handle the situation, wasn’t it?
Shen Huaizhou was completely unfazed by the lecherous men approaching them. Instead, he turned to Xie Qingling and said, “Watch closely.”
Xie Qingling: “…”
One, two, three, four, five five men in total.
Shen Huaizhou strode forward with unusually light steps, even spinning gracefully in place. His wide skirt billowed out like a blooming black lotus, briefly revealing calves clad in black leggings beneath the slightly parted hem.
Then his legs moved.
Xie Qingling’s vision blurred she couldn’t even see how Shen Huaizhou moved but the tall man at the front suddenly doubled over, clutching his crotch with a pained howl.
Shen Huaizhou followed with an elbow strike to the man’s spine, using the momentum to flip over him.
As his skirt swirled chaotically, only his rapidly shifting legs were visible before he took down a second man.
Xie Qingling stared, stunned.
Shen Huaizhou lifted a section of his skirt high like a butterfly’s wing and swung it hard, covering two men’s heads.
Blinded, they were helpless.
Xie Qingling’s eyes lit up instantly.
Two dull thuds later, both men collapsed.
Only one remained.
The fifth man looked as if he’d seen a ghost, face pale as he stared at Shen Huaizhou’s stunning features. But now, all improper thoughts had vanished from his mind.
He just wanted to run.
Staggering backward, he turned to flee.
Shen Huaizhou didn’t pursue.
A cold smile curled his lips as he pressed one leg against the wall, his skirt riding up slightly. Xie Qingling spotted multiple slender throwing knives strapped to his ankle, knee, and thigh.
Shen Huaizhou plucked one free and hurled it at the fleeing man.
A sharp cry echoed as the blade struck the man’s ankle, sending him crumpling to the ground.
The pungent smell of urine filled the air before the man lost consciousness.
Shen Huaizhou lowered his leg, the wide skirt falling back into place with dignified elegance. Once again, he appeared every bit the aloof, beautiful woman.
Had Xie Qingling not witnessed it herself, no one would believe that in mere minutes, Shen Huaizhou had single-handedly taken down five burly men.
Without even a speck of dust on his skirt!
So graceful. Impeccably graceful.
After retrieving his throwing knife, Shen Huaizhou approached Xie Qingling and said, “Let’s go.”
“…Alright.” Xie Qingling’s heart still raced. So when Shen Huaizhou said he’d “play around,” he really meant he’d put on a show for her.
Only after they’d left the chaotic scene behind did Shen Huaizhou ask, “Interested?”
“In what?”
“That move was called ‘Hidden Flower Beneath Leaves,'” he explained. “Also known as ‘Skirt Kick.’ It emphasizes using minimal movement to counter larger opponents striking swiftly and retracting quickly. The skirt obscures their vision so they can’t even see your attack before it’s over.”
“With mastery, three moves can finish an enemy. First kick the knee, then the groin, finally the head…” Shen Huaizhou tilted his head, studying her intently. “Besides, you have long legs perfect for concealing tools. Want to learn? I can teach you.”
Xie Qingling’s surging emotions finally found an outlet. She nodded firmly. “Yes!”
Shen Huaizhou then asked, “Will you wear a skirt?”
“Yes!” Xie Qingling’s eyes sparkled.
Shen Huaizhou was taken aback for a moment before saying, “Come to think of it, you haven’t learned any combat techniques, have you?”
“Only during military training, I learned dagger drills.”
“That’s far from enough. The department head gave you a pair of short blades, didn’t they? When you have time, seek advice from Old Yu and practice with him. You’re very familiar with the human body and have a solid foundation. You already know the weak points of the human body well, so you should learn much faster than most people.” Shen Huaizhou suddenly added, “Often, your opponents won’t just be ghosts and monsters.”
They could also be humans.
Xie Qingling paused briefly, then nodded and said, “I understand what you mean.”
Shen Huaizhou said with great satisfaction, “Excellent. The department head really didn’t misjudge you. You’re promising material, unlike that Ye Anran…”
“Senior Anran is quite nice,” Xie Qingling instinctively replied.
“That’s not what I meant.” Shen Huaizhou sighed deeply, rubbing his forehead as he said, “I’ve asked Ye Anran to wear a skirt more than once, but she always calls me a pervert.”
“…”
