Chapter 24

“Tomorrow we’re going on a field assignment. The department head and Shen Huaizhou will stay behind, so you’ll get to see him then,” Ye Anran said.

This was Ling Fang’s arrangement.

The evasive manner of Ye Anran and the others made Xie Qingling feel somewhat strange.

Just what kind of person was this Shen Huaizhou, to make the other department members react so… peculiarly.

But she soon stopped thinking about it.

Meeting Shen Huaizhou was merely a matter of time she just needed to wait.

Ye Anran took out paper and a pen, saying to Xie Qingling in a low voice, “Come on, let’s write and copy together.”

Ah, writing self-criticisms and copying the Work Guidelines.

Xie Qingling pressed her lips together, then sat down beside Ye Anran and began copying as well.

Everyone worked silently on their tasks. After about ten minutes, Dai Xingyu’s keyboard tapping stopped.

He pushed his computer toward Xie Qingling, grinning brightly. “Here, take a look. This is the report specially written for you by the Logistics Department.”

Xie Qingling felt a bit puzzled but took it anyway. On the screen, she saw:

“Shocking! Such an incident actually occurred at a certain university!

Why did the teaching building suddenly catch fire? Why did the walls collapse?

No one is supervising these shoddy projects construction market regulations need to be rectified!

…

Some specimen rooms in the college were damaged in this incident due to improper preservation.

Fortunately, no teachers or students attending classes were injured.

Reject shoddy engineering start with you and me.

The specific cause of the safety incident is still under investigation by relevant departments. Our reporter will continue to follow up for you…”

There was also a small section featuring interviews with victims of this “fire and building collapse incident.”

Male Student A: “That’s right; I’m a sophomore working part-time in the college office. When the incident happened, I was on duty in the college broadcasting room. I didn’t hear the alarm, so I couldn’t escape in time. Luckily, a kind-hearted student who wished to remain anonymous carried me out. If I remember correctly, it should have been a very tall and brave male student. I felt completely safe when he lifted me up. I hope this anonymous, warm-hearted student contacts me soon I’d like to properly thank him in person.”

Female Student B: “Although my experimental specimens unfortunately perished in this fire, as long as no one was hurt, it’s fine. My advisor has already agreed to extend my deadline for submitting the assignment.”

Reporter: “What were your experimental specimens?”

Female Student B: “Sterile fly larvae cultivated in the laboratory.”

“…”

Xie Qingling silently pushed the computer back.

The unwilling-to-be-named Xie Qingling asked, “Is this also part of your job?”

“The work of covering up traces afterward is mainly handled by the Logistics Department. I just need to cooperate when they need material. If some details don’t match up, the public might notice something wrong.”

Xie Qingling nodded, gaining a deeper understanding of this special incident handling department she belonged to.

More precisely, the department she was in was just a small branch of this massive organization.

Apart from her own department responsible for field operations and cleanup, Xie Qingling currently knew of two others: the Logistics Department and the Technology Research and Development Department.

It was truly unimaginable that in what appeared to be such a normal and peaceful modern society, there existed such a massive organization operating covertly in the shadows, yet presenting itself in an utterly ordinary manner right before everyone’s eyes. Yet no one truly recognized them for what they were.

Ye Anran then pulled Xie Qingling along, sharing more about the daily work routines within the department and some precautions to note.

After about an hour, Xie Qingling had gained a fairly comprehensive understanding of the department.

“That’s all for now there’s not much else to say, and I can’t think of anything more off the top of my head. Once you join us on a few missions, you’ll naturally grasp everything you need to know,” Ye Anran said, scratching her head.

Xie Qingling nodded and continued copying the Work Guidelines.

Work Guidelines, Article 1: Ensuring the safety of department members is the responsibility of the department head.

Work Guidelines, Article 2: Unconditionally following the department head’s directives is the core duty of all department members. Those who disobey orders without just cause will be penalized based on the severity of the consequences.

Work Guidelines, Article 3: Under any circumstances, the right to life of residents takes precedence above all else. As long as you retain combat capability, do not allow any resident to fall before you.

Work Guidelines, Article 4: …

By the time the sun began to set, dipping below the horizon, Xie Qingling still hadn’t finished copying the Work Guidelines.

Ten copies totaling thirty thousand words it was no small task to complete in a short time.

Unlike seasoned veterans like Ye Anran, who had copied the guidelines numerous times, Xie Qingling didn’t dare to be careless. She transcribed each word and sentence meticulously, ensuring her handwriting was clear and the pages neat. As a newcomer, she maintained a sense of diligence.

When it was time to clock out, Yu Wei left the office with his broadsword slung over his back, and Dai Xingyu departed with his laptop.

Even after hours, they still wore their earpieces, ready to respond to calls at any moment.

Ye Anran was about to leave as well, but before going, she reminded Xie Qingling, “We’re heading out now. Since you’re staying here alone, be careful and stay safe.”

“Okay.”

After the three of them left, the office fell into a silence so profound you could hear a pin drop.

Xie Qingling went to the kitchen, rummaged through the fridge, and found a pack of instant noodles that would be her meal for the day.

All supplies in the small Western-style building, including combat gear, were regularly replenished by the Logistics Department, so Xie Qingling didn’t have to worry much about daily necessities.

After some thought, Xie Qingling decided to treat the office as her home.

The space was spacious, rent-free, and managed by a largely responsive Logistics Department, making it quite convenient for daily life.

Since the other department members seldom used the resting quarters here, Xie Qingling staying behind wasn’t much different from living alone.

Before bed, Xie Qingling lit the Benzoin that Ye Anran had left for her.

A warm, medicinal fragrance instantly filled the air.

Taking a deep breath, Xie Qingling felt her body relax considerably. She then lay down and fell asleep.

The energy nearly drained from her during the battle with the Carrion Ghoul had mostly recovered after a day and night of rest.

As a Spirit User, her physical explosiveness and recovery ability were exceptionally strong.

She slept dreamlessly through the night.

By the next morning, Xie Qingling had fully recovered her energy.

Following Ye Anran’s instructions, she treated herself as the staff member on duty at the office. The first thing after getting up was to go to the third floor to offer incense at the shrine.

The shrine housed deities currently observed and documented by the department.

Of course, only Righteous Gods were enshrined.

It was best not to worship Evil Gods or deities of unknown origin, as doing so could lead to unimaginably dire consequences.

After completing the incense offering, Xie Qingling went to have breakfast.

It was just 8:30 AM.

There were still half an hour until work started, when both Ling Fang and Shen Huaizhou would arrive.

After some thought, Xie Qingling used this time to continue copying the unfinished Work Guidelines.

Half an hour later, she rubbed her slightly stiff wrist and took a break.

Just then, footsteps sounded outside the office.

Someone had arrived.

Xie Qingling stood up and looked toward the entrance.

Ling Fang entered first.

He was dressed more casually today, wearing a black Combat Suit, though he still had on his black leather gloves.

As he walked, he turned back to speak with the person half a step behind him.

Soon, the person behind Ling Fang came into full view.

It was a stunning beauty with waist-length, waterfall-like black hair and a tall, slender figure.

The beauty appeared slightly taller than Ling Fang. She wore a black dress that, on her tall frame, gave off a supermodel-like aura, radiating an imposing presence.

Her expression, however, was somewhat cold, giving off an unapproachable vibe.

This was…

Xie Qingling’s mind went blank for a moment. Logically, someone accompanying Ling Fang and seemingly discussing matters with him should be Shen Huaizhou, who was on duty today.

So, Shen Huaizhou was such a beautiful woman?

And of the cool, mature type.

The department truly was full of hidden talents.

As her thoughts wandered, Ling Fang brought the beauty over to Xie Qingling and said, “Let me introduce you. This is Shen Huaizhou, the last member of the department you haven’t met. And this is our new member, Xie Qingling.”

After introducing both parties, Ling Fang left the office and went to the kitchen

He had a habit of brewing a cup of coffee to refresh himself before starting work.

Now, only Shen Huaizhou and Xie Qingling remained in the first-floor hall, facing each other.

Confronted with such an icy, mature beauty, Xie Qingling instinctively felt she wouldn’t be as easy to get along with as Ye Anran, making her somewhat nervous.

This Shen Huaizhou seemed to have quite a personality.

“Hello,” Xie Qingling greeted. “I look forward to working with you.”

Even if she wasn’t easy to get along with, she probably wasn’t too strange. After all, Ling Fang had said their standards for selecting teammates were strict, so at the very least, Shen Huaizhou’s character should be above average.

Soon, Shen Huaizhou across from her spoke.

“Hello, I’m Shen Huaizhou.”

In that instant, Xie Qingling’s entire body stiffened as if struck by lightning.

“…”

Xie Qingling froze for a moment, thinking she had misheard. “You?…”

Then, a deep male voice sounded again: “I am Shen Huaizhou.”

Xie Qingling: “…”

Shen Huaizhou…

He was actually a man!!!!!

Xie Qingling didn’t know what expression to make for a moment, but she had always been composed. Out of politeness and upbringing, she didn’t react with shock or surprise. After a brief moment of astonishment, she quickly calmed down.

Perhaps this was just his personal preference.

There was no need to make a fuss.

Shen Huaizhou, however, watched her with unexpected interest for several moments without speaking, maintaining his aloof demeanor.

Just then, Ling Fang emerged from the kitchen holding a cup of coffee.

Seeing that both of them appeared relatively calm, Ling Fang assumed they hadn’t properly introduced themselves yet. He said to Xie Qingling, “Shen Huaizhou’s identity is somewhat special. Don’t judge by his appearance – he is male. The reason he dresses like this is because he’s a practicing Illusionist – this is also part of his Divine Blessing.”

[Graceful white fox, magnificent Nine-tailed. The long-dormant Tushan clan has bestowed Mystical Power upon a mortal man. The Nine-tailed, masters of bewitching charm and peerless beauty, must constantly attract others’ attention. They are natural-born powerhouses. Beauty is also their weapon.]

Xie Qingling: “…”
