Chapter 22

Xie Qingling was momentarily stunned, unable to resist glancing toward Ling Fang. He had already entered the teaching building, and she had no idea what he was going to do.

“The chief is confirming whether any residual ghostly entities remain. We just need to wait here for him cleanup work is essential too. Have you read the Work Guidelines?” Yu Wei approached, standing beside Xie Qingling as he spoke.

He was exceptionally tall. Though Xie Qingling stood at 170 cm, she appeared petite next to him.

He was estimated to be over 185 cm, possibly close to 190 cm. He likely exercised regularly, as his black form-fitting clothes outlined his muscles, exuding a robust vitality.

Looking at this weathered, unshaven middle-aged man, Xie Qingling sensed a paternal warmth and tolerance in his gaze.

Even with a heavy broadsword strapped to his back and a build as solid as a small mountain clearly indicating formidable combat prowess it didn’t detract from his gentle demeanor. It was a strangely reassuring presence, deeply inclusive.

Xie Qingling nodded. “I’ve read the Work Guidelines, but I’m still unfamiliar with the procedures.”

After all, it was her first time.

Yu Wei nodded, noticing her obediently clutching the bag without moving, and smiled. “No need to be so tense or restrained. I’m Yu Wei, your senior. Everyone calls me Old Yu, so you can too.”

Though he said that, Xie Qingling didn’t dare overstep and addressed him respectfully, “Brother Yu.”

Who would have thought she’d be such a well-behaved kid? Fighting so fiercely, he’d assumed she’d be more rebellious.

Yu Wei gave her a curious look and said, “Aren’t you going to check out your weapon? The chief worked through the night to forge it. It’s made from the Rakshasa ghost blade and the materials came from your own efforts, incidentally.”

His words sparked Xie Qingling’s curiosity.

She opened the bag to find an object wrapped in several layers of white cloth. Unwrapping it layer by layer, she discovered a pair of short bone daggers crafted from the Rakshasa ghost blade.

The daggers were entirely polished from bone, with a total length of about 45 cm including the hilt and blade. The blade wasn’t straight but curved, somewhat resembling the tip of a scalpel.

Additionally, strange symbols were carved into the blade, with a thin line extending from the base of the symbols, running from the guard all the way to the tip, traversing the entire length.

Xie Qingling picked them up, testing their weight in her hands, and found them exceptionally well-balanced and lightweight. Though the bone blades felt cool to the touch, they no longer carried the bone-chilling coldness of before.

She practiced a few swings and slashes, growing increasingly fond of them.

Indeed, compared to handguns, blades suited her far better.

Her recent battle with the Carrion Ghoul had taught her the importance of a reliable weapon in combat.

She had known that the clay figures they used were crafted by Ling Fang through sorcery, but she hadn’t realized he also forged weapons.

It now appears that many of the weapons in the armory might have been crafted by Ling Fang.

Xie Qingling said, “I really like this pair of weapons. Thank you, Director. I’ll make sure to write a thorough self-criticism report.”

“This pair of short blades is called ‘Blood Oath’,” Yu Wei explained with a smile.

Xie Qingling was taken aback again. “Is there any special significance to them?”

“Look at the symbol on the blade that’s the seal script character for ‘Vessel’. Each time you strike a ghostly entity, it can absorb a small portion of their energy. When the ‘vessel’ is full, you can release and utilize that energy,” Yu Wei elaborated. “This is a curse technique that the Director imbued into these blades.”

Though Xie Qingling only partially understood, her jaw dropped slightly in amazement.

It sounded incredibly powerful!

Yu Wei continued, “Most energy from Goblins and Monsters carries heavy Yin energy. Even an Innate Spirit wouldn’t be able to utilize such absorbed energy, but you’re an exception.”

“As Houtu’s Devotee, you possess partial authority over reincarnation. These Demons from the underworld can also serve your purposes,” Yu Wei said. “This curse technique suits you perfectly.”

After hearing this, Xie Qingling realized that these short blades must have been specially crafted for her by Ling Fang, just like Ye Anran’s black and white needles.

Could she say the department benefits were amazing…

She initially wanted to ask how precious these blades were to make, but then remembered how invaluable the “Offering” she received upon joining had been beyond her imagination. Xie Qingling decided to keep her questions to herself.

“Brother Yu seems quite close with the Director, knowing all these details so well,” Xie Qingling remarked.

Yu Wei scratched his head and chuckled sheepishly, “Probably because I’m older, he finds we have more in common.”

“…” Ling Fang didn’t appear that old. Xie Qingling didn’t understand did Ling Fang mean the other department members were unreliable youngsters, making him prefer the much older Yu Wei?

“Don’t take the Director’s punishment to heart. He’s not targeting you specifically. In his position, he has to consider far more factors than we realize,” Yu Wei continued, sounding like a concerned father.

“I understand,” Xie Qingling nodded.

Xie Qingling herself believed in rewarding merit and punishing faults clear distinctions, well-defined boundaries.

This outcome was already better than expected. She held no resentment toward Ling Fang for assigning her the self-criticism report.

Taking advantage of Ling Fang’s absence, Xie Qingling knelt and placed both hands on the ground, using “Soul Return”.

The five skeletons that had been sent flying by the Carrion Ghoul had scattered across the floor, becoming a jumbled pile of indistinguishable bones. But under the Soul Return Technique, they reassembled like building blocks, piece by piece, restoring into complete skeletons and returning to their original forms.

Then, they hopped and skipped back to their specimen room.

Laying themselves back in their respective display cases.

The elderly skeleton, using a leg bone as a crutch, had been waiting patiently on the side. Only after watching all the other skeletons lie down in their places did it stagger over and settle into its own spot.

The specimen room returned to its usual order and tranquility.

Having completed this task, Xie Qingling withdrew her hand, drenched in sweat.

She felt as if some force had been drained from her, leaving her almost breathless with palpitations. A thin layer of sweat coated her body, and her limbs grew weak and sore.

Seeing her condition, Ye Anran approached and inserted a silver needle directly into her head, scolding her angrily: “Are you trying to kill yourself? While I can heal injuries, I can’t restore expended energy and stamina. You need proper rest to recover your health!”

As a “doctor,” Ye Anran particularly disliked disobedient patients.

But even worse than disobedient patients were those like Xie Qingling who repeatedly endangered themselves with no regard for their own lives.

Yu Wei added: “Take a break. Using the power of the Innate Spirit isn’t without limits. For your first time utilizing energy in combat, you performed remarkably well. As your body becomes more tempered and resilient, you’ll be able to contain more ‘Spirit’ and wield greater energy.”

Upon hearing this, Xie Qingling understood.

She was out of mana.

Noting this limitation, Xie Qingling committed it to memory.

With Ye Anran’s silver needle sustaining her, Xie Qingling regained some strength.

While they were talking, the previously idle Ye Anran pointed toward the staircase: “The department head is coming out!”

Ling Fang had completed his inspection, confirming that all Carrion Ghouls had been eliminated with none escaping.

He tapped his earpiece to contact the other two members.

“Shen Huaizhou, the cleanup operation is complete. You may leave early.”

“Dai Xingyu, contact the Logistics Department to handle the cleanup. No need for backup support.”

Ling Fang approached the other three and said: “Team, fall out.”

Exiting the Killing Field, the four returned to the real-world campus.

The area around the teaching building was silent and empty, the entire campus seeming deserted.

Following her department members to the school gate, Xie Qingling found a stretched van waiting there.

The driver on standby immediately started the vehicle after Ling Fang and the others boarded.

Ling Fang said: “Return to 221 Central Street.”

Shen Huaizhou and Dai Xingyu didn’t accompany them.

In the enclosed compartment, the air felt stuffy. Leaning against the seatback, Xie Qingling grew drowsy.

As a newcomer, she had many questions, but clearly this wasn’t the right time. So Xie Qingling kept her mouth shut, saying nothing.

The vehicle traveled in silence for a long while.

About ten minutes passed without anyone speaking.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Ling Fang glanced at Xie Qingling in the rearview mirror and finally said: “I hope such incidents won’t happen again in the future.”

“We are a team. Before making any decision, do not let your teammates fall into trouble because of your choices.”

Xie Qingling remained silent, completely ignoring him.

Ling Fang couldn’t help but frown.

Ye Anran reached out and nudged Xie Qingling, only to find her body slump softly against the car door.

“Minister, she’s fallen asleep.”

Ling Fang: “…”

Judging by the bloodstains on her clothes, one could roughly infer that the situation must have been quite intense during the confrontation with the Carrion Ghoul. Although Ye Anran could provide healing, energy couldn’t be directly restored.

She must have been utterly exhausted.

“Forget it.” Ling Fang sighed heavily. “Let it be for now.”

After a pause, Ling Fang said, “Tomorrow, I’ll go on field duty with Shen Huaizhou. The rest of you will stay behind.”

“Ah?” Ye Anran exclaimed in surprise.

Yu Wei, however, said nothing.

“Stay and bond with the newcomer,” Ling Fang instructed. “Teach her what team awareness means.”

“Oh, understood.”

Xie Qingling slept soundly throughout the entire journey.

It was an exceptionally deep and restful sleep.

When she woke again, Xie Qingling found herself in an unfamiliar room.

An incense burner on the bedside table was emitting seal incense, a wisp of blue smoke rising and filling the air with a faint, medicinal fragrance.

Xie Qingling threw off the covers and got out of bed, noticing that her clothes had been changed into pajamas.

If she remembered correctly, she had… fallen asleep in the car yesterday.

She hadn’t expected to sleep so deeply.

But since she was with the department members, there shouldn’t have been any oversights, right?

Thinking this, Xie Qingling walked out of the room.

She recognized where she was now.

Room 206.

Her designated room in the small western-style building.
