Chapter 21

Soul Summoning Art, activate.

At the same time, the already dead maggots opened their eyes once more.

They began to wriggle again, driven solely by the instinct to feed.

What enticing carrion, such deliciousness right before them.

They frantically gnawed at the Carrion Ghoul’s flesh. Even though the ghoul’s meat contained toxins, it didn’t matter they were already dead and couldn’t die a second time.

Feast, devour, don’t stop. Keep going, relentlessly consuming this massive pile of rotting flesh until it’s completely gone.

The maggots controlled by Xie Qingling were now the perfect weapon against the Carrion Ghoul.

The Carrion Ghoul let out agonized howls, trying to shake off the maggots, trying to crush them to death.

But the maggots were so tiny, they were nearly impossible to remove.

And what made it worse was that they weren’t afraid of death.

About two minutes passed, or perhaps a bit longer.

The Carrion Ghoul had been gnawed so thoroughly by these small white maggots that its stark white bones became visible. Deep pits were carved into its body by their relentless feeding.

To those tiny white insects, the filthy, stinking rotten flesh was nothing less than a grand feast.

Ye Anran watched with her scalp tingling and goosebumps rising all over her skin.

This newcomer… how terrifying!

She couldn’t help but glance at Xie Qingling, only to find her watching calmly, her face completely expressionless.

“That should be enough,” Xie Qingling said casually, then leaped down from the rooftop.

She landed on the fourth-floor corridor, standing behind the Carrion Ghoul.

The tormented ghoul was too preoccupied to notice her, frantically beating itself trying to smash the tiny maggots covering its body.

But it was futile.

Just as an elephant cannot easily rid itself of tiny ants, the Carrion Ghoul’s massive size had now become its disadvantage.

It couldn’t pinpoint the exact locations of the maggots even though it could feel every bite with excruciating clarity.

At that moment, Xie Qingling raised her Bone Saw Knife and slashed fiercely at the Carrion Ghoul’s Achilles tendons, twice.

With a loud “thud,” the Carrion Ghoul lost its ankles and crashed heavily to the ground.

Even for a ghoul, without feet, it could no longer stand.

Before its transformation, a single slash would have been enough to finish off a Carrion Ghoul. Now, two slashes weren’t sufficient. Xie Qingling raised an eyebrow slightly in surprise.

Right, it had grown stronger.

Well then, let’s try this.

Xie Qingling discarded the Bone Saw Knife and drew her handgun, clicking off the safety.

There was one last bullet left in the chamber.

It was a specially crafted round it should finish the job with one shot.

Xie Qingling walked over to the Carrion Ghoul’s head, planted her foot firmly on its thrashing skull, and pressed the gun barrel against its head.

“This way, I won’t miss,” Xie Qingling said.

A gunshot rang out “bang” and the Carrion Ghoul’s head exploded, its body vanishing along with it.

Only when the last remnants of the Carrion Ghoul’s ankle had completely disappeared did Ye Anran snap out of her daze.

She moved her dry lips but found herself at a loss for words.

After a moment’s thought, only two words could summarize this battle:

Beautifully done.

This newcomer, who had joined the department for less than two days, not only showed no fear when facing these man-eating Fierce Ghosts, but also managed to execute the most advantageous and precise actions at critical moments. While restraining them, she even launched appropriate counterattacks, fighting a brilliant battle where the weak triumphed over the strong and the few prevailed against the many.

Ye Anran no longer knew whether this was talent or something else.

In any case, it was utterly impressive.

So impressive that, as a senior, she couldn’t find the words to express her current thoughts.

With just the two of them, they had eliminated all the Carrion Ghouls before the department head arrived, protected the other humans from harm, and safeguarded the remaining Cadaver Teachers in the specimen room.

This was undoubtedly the best possible outcome.

In fact, this operation could be considered the one with the fewest casualties since Ye Anran joined the Special Events department.

But still…

It was thrilling, too thrilling, and far too insane.

So insane that Ye Anran’s heart was still pounding restlessly in her chest.

Ye Anran also jumped down from the rooftop, landing beside Xie Qingling. Just as she was about to speak, the sound of footsteps echoed from the staircase.

“Department Head!” Ye Anran immediately recognized that Ling Fang and Yu Wei had arrived.

The joy of their recent victory instantly vanished. Ye Anran quickly grabbed Xie Qingling and whispered, “The department head has a terrible temper. You’re definitely in for a scolding later.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t snitch on you. You’ll have to explain yourself. But don’t expect me to help I won’t be explaining anything for you.”

Ye Anran had no intention of betraying her teammate, but she also had no desire to bear Ling Fang’s wrath.

This was the most she could do.

Xie Qingling nodded, indicating she understood.

Whether it was the decision to act without authorization or the choice to eliminate the ghosts, it had all been her idea. Ye Anran had simply been dragged along halfway.

After choosing to act without notifying anyone, Xie Qingling was prepared to face the consequences.

She just didn’t know…

Exactly how bad the department head’s temper was.

He seemed quite mild-mannered at first glance.

Nevertheless, Xie Qingling braced herself mentally.

As they spoke, two figures appeared at the fourth-floor staircase.

One was naturally Ling Fang, and the other was an exceptionally tall, burly man with a weathered face.

Ling Fang carried a silver case in his hand and wore a wooden crossbow on his back. His sharp gaze swept across the scene before finally settling on Xie Qingling and Ye Anran.

The newcomer was covered in bloodstains, looking as though she had just survived a fierce battle one that had nearly taken her out.

For a rookie facing such a large-scale confrontation on her first mission, maintaining such composure was already quite remarkable.

But then he took in the state of the scene: complete chaos, with half the building on the verge of collapse…

Ling Fang’s brow furrowed deeply.

He glanced at the time only twelve minutes had passed since he set out.

What on earth had happened in those short twelve minutes?

His eyes shifted back and forth between Xie Qingling and Ye Anran before he finally barked, “Ye Anran!”

Ye Anran: “…”

Damn, why did it have to be her!

None of this mess was caused by her!

“Explain,” Ling Fang took a deep breath, “Where’s the ghost? Why is the building like this?”

As an old team member, Ye Anran naturally became the first target of questioning.

After all, no matter how you looked at it, as a newcomer who hadn’t yet learned to handle such emergencies even if she was highly capable in combat, even if she had received the Blessing of Houtu objectively speaking, she couldn’t possibly have created such a huge scene.

That left only one possibility it had something to do with Ye Anran.

“Department Head…” Ye Anran stammered, looking like she was about to cry but had no tears.

Just as she was about to defend herself, Xie Qingling’s voice came from behind her.

“It’s not Anran’s fault, it was me.” Xie Qingling walked over with her head lowered, looking exactly like a student who hadn’t turned in homework facing their teacher.

She said quietly, “I forced her, I was the one who acted.”

“Oh? What did you force her to do?”

“Forced her to heal me.”

Ling Fang: “…”

After a moment of silence, Ling Fang sighed deeply, “Let’s leave this place first, the building is about to collapse.”

The four of them moved to the open space in front of the teaching building.

During the walk, Xie Qingling had already prepared her explanation.

She said slowly, “I was the one who decided to act early, I was the one who disobeyed the Department Head’s orders, I killed the ghost, and although I didn’t directly tear down the building, it’s still related to me. So if you want to punish or scold anyone, direct it at me. Anran is innocent.”

But if she had to do it over again, her choice wouldn’t change.

However, Xie Qingling kept this thought to herself, afraid that saying it would only add fuel to the fire.

Ye Anran didn’t expect her to be so righteous and immediately felt embarrassed.

After thinking for a moment, she also tried to defend Xie Qingling: “Department Head, I think today’s incident shouldn’t be judged by normal standards.”

“That Carrion Ghoul wanted to eat the Cadaver Teacher in the specimen room. You know what the Cadaver Teacher means to medical students. It’s understandable that the newbie couldn’t control her emotions.”

That was quite the eloquent defense. Xie Qingling nodded vigorously beside her, “Understandable.”

Ling Fang laughed in frustration.

He stared at Xie Qingling for a long moment without responding, then asked her, “You killed the ghost?”

Xie Qingling nodded.

“How?”

“With a gun.”

Ling Fang had already known that Xie Qingling had taken a gun from the armory.

Hearing this, Ling Fang looked surprised: “You seem quite talented with firearms.”

Xie Qingling hung her head even lower in shame, whispering, “Not really. Only one of the five bullets hit, four missed completely.”

Ye Anran started gesturing animatedly beside them, recalling the dangerous battle, and vividly recounted the intense scene.

“Department Head, the newbie is amazing! She not only managed to kite the ghost but also performed summoning, and finally used the… ugh… larval flies from the laboratory to send off the Carrion Ghoul.”

“Wasn’t it with a gun?”

“It was with a gun, but like this…” Ye Anran demonstrated how Xie Qingling had stepped on the Carrion Ghoul’s head and pressed the gun barrel against its skull.

So that’s how it was.

Out of five bullets, only the last one hit.

Ling Fang: “…”

Xie Qingling remained quietly standing to the side, looking obedient.

If one ignored the bloodstains splattered across her body and only looked at her obedient, attentive expression, she truly seemed the part like a humble, sincere newcomer who understood nothing.

Once their voices faded, Xie Qingling interjected at just the right moment: “Anyway, we killed the ghost, but we did break the rules. Whether it’s writing a self-criticism, having my pay docked, or any other punishment, I’ll accept it. I won’t hold a grudge against you.”

Despite Xie Qingling’s innocent expression, her mind was busy calculating.

She had confessed honestly and admitted her mistakes shouldn’t she receive a lighter punishment?

“You’d even think of holding a grudge against me?”

“…No.”

Ling Fang stared at her for a moment, lost in thought.

“Go back and write a ten-thousand-word self-criticism, and copy the Work Guidelines ten times.” Her pay, however, wasn’t docked.

Xie Qingling nodded, thinking this punishment was acceptable.

Just writing a self-criticism no big deal.

A boss who doesn’t deduct pay is a good boss.

A moment later, Ling Fang bent down, opened the silver case he carried with him, pulled out a bag, and tossed it to Xie Qingling.

Xie Qingling hurriedly caught it, weighed it in her hand it felt about two pounds and had no idea what was inside.

She looked utterly bewildered, unsure of what this meant.

Ling Fang, however, showed no intention of explaining and simply walked away.

Yu Wei the burly, weathered man who had accompanied Ling Fang explained to Xie Qingling, “Keep it. It’s a weapon the department head prepared for you.”
