Chapter 20
Carrion Ghouls, rejected by the ferrymen of the River of Forgetfulness, are left to wander the mortal realm the only place where corpses for them to feed on remain. When driven by extreme hunger and unable to hunt successfully, they do not hesitate to devour their own kind. To them, the flesh of their fellow ghouls is a rare delicacy a putrid meat accumulated with untold toxins.
The Carrion Ghoul was feeding.
Newly awakened spirits, once they successfully feed, gain immense energy.
This Carrion Ghoul was far more formidable than the previous Rakshasa Ghost. Had it been Xie Qingling at the beginning, empty handed and without any reliance, she would have died countless times at its hands.
Watching the Carrion Ghoul’s swift feeding movements, Xie Qingling’s brow furrowed deeply. Unfortunately, she had no means of long range attack; from this distance, it was too late to rush over and stop it.
Ye Anran also sensed impending disaster.
She plucked four Black Needles, holding them between her fingers, and immediately shot them out.
Four Carrion Ghouls fell dead on the spot, dissolving into wisps of green smoke but it wasn’t enough.
Compared to the speed at which they were eliminating the ghouls, the rate of consumption was clearly faster.
In the blink of an eye, the mutated Carrion Ghoul had devoured seven of its kind.
Its body swelled violently, growing to over ten meters tall in an instant.
Its massive form pierced straight through the ceiling, its waist wedged between the two floors of the building.
A bluish black head sprouted from its neck, still featureless except for a gigantic mouth on its face. Across its body, more than a dozen arms jutted out chaotically, creating a bizarre and terrifying sight.
The Carrion Ghoul let out a furious roar, then lowered its head, looking down from above at Xie Qingling and Ye Anran. With heavy, lumbering steps, it began moving toward the two tiny humans.
With each step the colossal creature took, the school building shook violently. Its body, trapped between the floors, acted like a saw with every movement, a screeching sound echoed as it sliced through the floor, splitting it in two!
Dust from the concrete rained down, and the steel reinforcements embedded within were exposed.
Though the mutated Carrion Ghoul had not yet reached Xie Qingling and the others, it had already demonstrated the power it gained after evolving.
The five skeletons summoned by Xie Qingling immediately surrounded the Carrion Ghoul.
However, this time, the Carrion Ghoul emitted a piercing shriek the powerful shockwave sent them flying back.
These skeletons were no match for the Carrion Ghoul, whose energy had greatly increased after a successful “feeding.”
“Run!” Xie Qingling shouted. “Split up!”
Without questioning Xie Qingling’s decision, Ye Anran chose a direction opposite to hers and fled for her life.
There was only one Carrion Ghoul, and with two humans fleeing in separate directions, it could only chase one.
It chose Xie Qingling.
The Carrion Ghoul lifted its enormous foot and moved toward Xie Qingling.
Its strength had increased, but its speed had diminished; its movements were noticeably slower, buying Xie Qingling a brief moment to catch her breath.
Watching Xie Qingling run farther and farther, from the west building to the east building, from the third floor to the fourth floor, as if about to escape its grasp, the Carrion Ghoul let out a furious roar.
Then, its dozen or so hands simultaneously rose and struck the ground with immense force.
Instantly, the load bearing walls began to tremble, and the solid concrete floor cracked like a spiderweb spreading across it.
The ever lengthening fissures spread to Xie Qingling’s feet, concrete chunks crumbled down, and the floor beneath her was no longer stable.
Xie Qingling stepped into empty air and fell straight down.
It all happened too fast. Xie Qingling had no time to find a handhold and plummeted directly from the fourth floor crack down to the third floor.
Her wrist was slashed by exposed steel rebar, leaving a ghastly wound that exposed bone, and bright red blood immediately splattered across the floor.
The rich scent of blood drove the already frenzied Carrion Ghoul into even greater madness.
Its eyes glowed with greed, and following the strongest scent of blood, it used its hands to tear down all the hard, obstructive concrete blocks in its path as it advanced.
Before long, the Carrion Ghoul had moved about five meters, and half of the east teaching building had been torn apart by it. The walls between the third and fourth floors tilted precariously, looking as if they could collapse at any moment.
The Carrion Ghoul pressed forward, finally reaching the epicenter of the blood scent.
But by then, where was Xie Qingling’s figure?
The spot was empty, save for a pool of crimson blood left behind.
The Carrion Ghoul shrieked, pounding its chest in frustration.
Meanwhile, Ye Anran was crouching low, gradually moving closer to where Xie Qingling had fallen.
With all the commotion just now, Ye Anran had certainly seen it.
She had also caught the strong smell of blood.
Ye Anran’s first instinct was to find the bleeding Xie Qingling and treat her wound as soon as possible.
But when she finally reached the spot where Xie Qingling had fallen, she faced the same dilemma as the Carrion Ghoul Xie Qingling was nowhere to be found.
Where had she gone?
Judging by the thick pool of blood on the ground, her injury must have been severe.
How could she still run off in that condition?!
Did she have a death wish?!
Ye Anran was exasperated.
She tried to contact Xie Qingling via the earpiece, but Xie Qingling’s bracelet hadn’t been granted access yet, making communication impossible.
Just as Ye Anran was considering whether to report Xie Qingling’s presumed death to the department head, Xie Qingling appeared.
She was drenched in blood, looking as if she had just been pulled out of a bloodbath.
“Ah!” Ye Anran cried out, her sorrow turning to joy as she rushed toward Xie Qingling.
She needed to get closer to administer treatment.
But Xie Qingling seemed not to notice her, heading straight for the Carrion Ghoul instead.
In her hand, she held a transparent glass container filled with something tiny white particles that resembled grains of millet.
Xie Qingling raised the glass container high and flung all the white particles at the Carrion Ghoul.
Instantly, the white substance scattered across the Carrion Ghoul’s bluish black body
But it had no effect.
The scene Ye Anran had imagined, of Xie Qingling turning the tide single handedly, did not come to pass.
Not only did that not happen, Xie Qingling immediately turned her head and shouted at her, “Run! It’s coming after us!”
Ye Anran: “…”
What sin had she committed to be fighting ghosts with this unreliable newcomer?
Gritting her teeth, Ye Anran ran while healing Xie Qingling. Seeing the ghastly wound on her arm where bone was visible, Ye Anran frowned tightly and couldn’t help but roar, “You’re too reckless! Losing so much blood, you could go into shock and die! At a time like this, why are you still running? You should stay put and find a safe place to hide, waiting for me to rescue you!”
Ah, she’d lost count of how many times she’d said “too reckless” already.
Xie Qingling remained completely calm, as if the injury wasn’t hers, and said indifferently, “It’s fine. I have at least one more minute before going into shock.”
“…” You’re the professional, you’re amazing!
Ye Anran couldn’t help rolling her eyes while casting Returning Spring to save Xie Qingling’s life.
Though the wound healed, the bloodstains remained. Xie Qingling was still covered in blood from head to toe, a terrifying sight.
Meanwhile, the Carrion Ghoul behind them, feeling deceived, brushed off those tiny, insignificant white objects on its body and continued moving forward, pursuing the two detestable humans!
Listening to the approaching screeches and smelling the overwhelming stench of decay, Ye Anran’s face turned pale again and again.
“Run to higher ground, to the rooftop!” Xie Qingling made the decision quickly without looking back.
The two moved through the ruins of the east building, their feet stepping on exposed steel bars and half collapsed walls as they leaped, quickly climbing to the roof.
The Carrion Ghoul was still downstairs.
The temporary distance made them slightly safer.
But instead of continuing to run, Xie Qingling stopped, turned around, and faced the Carrion Ghoul directly.
She looked ready for a big fight.
Mad! Absolutely mad!
Would she die here with this crazy newcomer?
Ye Anran couldn’t figure out Xie Qingling’s intentions at all. Every move Xie Qingling made was beyond her control, making Ye Anran utterly frustrated as she gritted her teeth: “We’re doomed for sure!”
“With our level of skill as rookies, we can’t possibly defeat this Carrion Ghoul,” Ye Anran muttered.
“We should just try to survive and wait for the department head to come.”
As a support character who never imagined fighting ghosts like this, Ye Anran was under tremendous pressure.
It was time to give up attacking the Carrion Ghoul.
One controller and one healer neither was a damage dealer. For both of them, the safest approach was to stall the Carrion Ghoul and wait for backup!
But Xie Qingling said, “No, it should be said that it’s doomed.”
“…Huh?” What was she saying?
“Look at the Carrion Ghoul downstairs,” Xie Qingling said.
Ye Anran followed her pointing finger and saw the Carrion Ghoul on the fourth floor outdoor walkway, baring its teeth and staring at them fiercely.
Its bluish black skin was still dotted with those tiny white specks.
Wait, that’s not right.
That’s not the point.
Why had the Carrion Ghoul, which had been relentlessly pursuing them, stopped chasing?
Not only had it stopped chasing, but it remained rooted in place, seemingly… scratching an itch?
No, it wasn’t just scratching an itch.
The Carrion Ghoul intermittently let out furious roars, but upon closer listening, its enraged cries were also filled with unbearable agony.
Ye Anran stood up in surprise, straining to get a better look at the Carrion Ghoul. She discovered it spinning in place incessantly, its dozen or so arms constantly… beating itself?
Ye Anran was taken aback and asked Xie Qingling, “What did you sprinkle on it?”
“Maggots. To be more precise, fly larvae,” Xie Qingling replied. “This is part of our forensic medicine curriculum. We utilize flies’ carrion feeding characteristics to observe the four stages of fly development through the eggs they lay on corpses, which helps estimate the time of death.”
Ye Anran felt she was grasping something.
She murmured, “Right, maggots feed on decay. In traditional Chinese medicine, maggots are also used to treat festering wounds they clean the rot more thoroughly than manual excision…”
“Those maggots are dead now.”
Xie Qingling half knelt on the ground, one hand pressed against the earth.
She said quietly, “So now, it’s my turn to take control.”
