Chapter 19

Xie Qingling closed the specimen room door.

Though this action could only delay the Carrion Ghouls briefly without completely keeping them out, what Xie Qingling needed right now was precisely this bit of time.

Inside this human skeleton specimen room stood rows of skeletal remains some pristine white, others bearing damage.

Some were artificial models, while others were genuine human bones.

Xie Qingling’s gaze swept rapidly across these skeletons before she crouched down, pressing one hand against the floor.

O departed Spirits resting eternally here.

If your presence remains in this realm,

Lend me your power.

Drive out all these invading Fierce Ghosts.

Return, return to your homeland.

Souls, return.

The human skeletons in the specimen room began creaking into motion.

Skulls displayed in cabinets and on platforms slowly turned their gaze toward her.

Within those hollow eye sockets, a peculiar light seemed to gather.

Xie Qingling had been inside that specimen room for quite some time now, yet she still hadn’t emerged.

Ye Anran stood guard outside, unaware of what she was doing inside, but her team coordination instincts made her subconsciously want to buy Xie Qingling more time.

Seeing the Carrion Ghouls gathering at the entrance about to break through the door while Xie Qingling inside showed no signs of movement, Ye Anran gritted her teeth and made a risky decision

She drew a Silver Needle across her palm.

The scent of blood instantly permeated the air.

This faint aroma held an irresistible allure for the Carrion Ghouls, something they couldn’t possibly resist.

Fragrant, soul piercingly fragrant, it stirred the Carrion Ghouls’ appetite to uncontrollable levels.

Immediately, all the Carrion Ghouls fixed their attention on Ye Anran, and in the next moment, the entire horde charged toward her.

Clenching her jaw, Ye Anran rushed toward the fourth floor to escape these frenzied Carrion Ghouls.

However, the ghouls were simply too wild.

As they pursued Ye Anran, they gnashed their teeth with cracking sounds, mimicking the noises and motions of tearing prey apart with their jaws.

Glancing back at the massive swarm of Carrion Ghouls trailing behind her, Ye Anran felt her scalp crawl, her psychological pressure instantly skyrocketing.

Her fleeing footsteps faltered slightly.

It was only at this moment that Ye Anran gained a new appreciation for the new recruit Xie Qingling’s mental fortitude.

Xie Qingling’s completely unfazed expression had made her think dealing with these Carrion Ghouls was relatively easy who knew it would be this intense?

Really…

Why did she have to pull such a life risking move like a rookie?!

Is madness contagious or something?

Ye Anran smiled bitterly as she continued her desperate flight.

Carrion Ghouls surrounded her behind, beside, ahead.

Handling them alone proved quite challenging.

During usual missions, Ye Anran was always the most protected member. As the team’s doctor, she absolutely had to be the last one standing, and Ling Fang rarely let Ye Anran confront ghosts alone.

This time, suddenly besieged by so many ghosts, Ye Anran felt herself panicking.

Although she could heal herself, a person only has two hands. Once she started healing, she couldn’t attack. Without attacking, defensive gaps would appear she couldn’t attend to both at once.

Ye Anran had several wounds sliced across her body. Though they healed quickly, they still severely disrupted her rhythm.

She held a black needle between her fingers, ready to strike down the Carrion Ghoul charging at her face. But the next moment, Ye Anran’s body tilted as a Carrion Ghoul that had flanked her from behind grabbed her ankle.

Damn it!

Ye Anran’s face turned pale.

This Carrion Ghoul had some intelligence, knowing to attack her lower body first.

If she fell to the ground and got swarmed by so many ghouls piling on top of her, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Ye Anran made a quick decision, changing the direction of her outstretched hand to first deal with the Carrion Ghoul grabbing her leg from behind.

But just as her hand reached out before making contact, someone else completed the action for her.

A hand with distinct knuckles grabbed the Carrion Ghoul’s leg it was truly a hand with distinct knuckles. Devoid of flesh, the wrist bones, palm bones, and finger bones were all exposed to the air.

Ye Anran turned her head to see a tall male skeleton appearing behind her like a living person, bending over to grab the Carrion Ghoul at her back.

Then, the skeleton suddenly exerted force, yanking the Carrion Ghoul backward and throwing it violently down the building.

Ye Anran stared blankly for a moment before understanding what had happened.

The skeleton had climbed up from the third floor by grabbing the railing. After throwing one Carrion Ghoul away, its movements didn’t stop as it quickly went to grab another ghoul near Ye Anran, flinging it out like a sack.

Just a skeleton, yet it made her feel completely secure.

Soon, the Carrion Ghoul in front of Ye Anran was also dealt with at some point, another hunched skeleton had rushed out. Compared to the previous skeleton, its movements were much slower, holding a leg bone in its hand that seemed to serve as its cane.

Now, this hunched skeleton was using this leg bone to brutally crush the Carrion Ghoul’s body.

The way it raised the leg bone high made it look particularly furious, as if it were wielding a giant hammer, repeatedly pounding the Carrion Ghoul with more anger than the younger skeleton’s movements.

Ye Anran was well protected between them.

A crisis had been resolved just like that, thanks to these two suddenly appearing skeletons.

Then came a third skeleton, a fourth…

These skeletons of varying heights, gleaming with cold light, some complete and some incomplete, both male and female, even including children, now all stood around Ye Anran in protective stances, giving her an immense sense of security.

Was it… Xie Qingling?

Were these skeletons her weapons?

Standing among the skeletons, even though the Carrion Ghouls coveted her intensely, none dared approach. Ye Anran stood there dazedly, suddenly finding herself with nothing to do.

Just then, Xie Qingling climbed up from the third floor corridor, leaping forcefully to land right beside her.

Ye Anran looked at her, lost for words.

Even this newcomer’s weapons were this insane.

“We can begin the treatment now,” Xie Qingling said. “With our reinforcements here, we can eliminate them all right in this spot!”

Ye Anran snapped back to attention, glancing at the wound on her hand and then at her own injury. A single rejuvenation spell instantly restored them to their original state, leaving no trace behind.

The skeletons summoned by Xie Qingling were exceptionally combat ready, their Spirits potent and residual power formidable.

The human body inherently possesses a denser and stronger Spirit compared to other living beings, and these skeletons displayed in the specimen room were undoubtedly exceptional even among ordinary people.

Their obsessions, their yearnings, their wills all enhanced their abilities.

Moreover, beneath their feet lay the medical school they had devoted their utmost efforts to protect, both in life and death.

Xie Qingling didn’t control them but merely allowed them to follow their instincts in battle. Even so, they effortlessly overwhelmed the fragile Carrion Ghouls.

These skeletons’ determination to guard the medical school was fiercer than anyone else’s.

With the crisis averted, Ye Anran let out a relieved sigh and said discontentedly, “You’re too reckless! When the department head arrives later, I’ll explain everything clearly I won’t take the blame for you!”

Xie Qingling wasn’t angered by this; she simply nodded. Of course, she wouldn’t let Ye Anran shoulder the responsibility.

However, as she looked at the hunched skeleton holding a leg bone, she suddenly raised a hand and pointed, explaining, “That one there was the founder of our university’s forensic medicine department.”

“He dedicated his entire life to advancing the forensic profession. Right up until his death, he was coordinating with a judicial identification center, trying to dissect an unclaimed body from a homicide case.”

“My teacher said that back then, the medical school didn’t have as many Cadaver Teachers actually, we’re still short now, but the situation was much worse then. Many faculty members chose to donate their bodies to the labs after death to improve teaching conditions. The old dean weathered all hardships, laboring his whole life for the medical school, and even after death, he didn’t stop. He donated his own body, allowing his students to dissect it and preserve it as a specimen.”

“And that one,” Xie Qingling pointed at the tall skeleton climbing up from the corridor, “that was a senior from our college. He was only thirty when he died.”

“I heard his specialized courses were exceptionally outstanding. Even before graduation, many institutions were competing to recruit him, but he chose to stay and teach at the university. Sadly, he never got the chance to fully showcase his talents not long after he began teaching, he was diagnosed with cancer. When he died, his computer still had an unpublished research paper open.”

“And that one…”

Xie Qingling paused and didn’t continue.

She looked at Ye Anran and said, “I don’t know what you did before joining the department, but you’re a ‘doctor’ now. You should understand my feelings to some extent, right?”

“You can report everything that happened here to the department head. I have no objections and won’t blame you. I’m still very grateful for your support. But I won’t allow the Carrion Ghouls to devour them.”

Her gaze was exceptionally resolute.
Ye Anran opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but ultimately remained silent.

After a moment’s thought, she simply pulled out a Black Needle and said furiously, “Dammit, let the chief scold me if he wants! At worst, I’ll get a pay cut and have to write a self criticism!”

As soon as she finished speaking, the Black Needle shot from her fingertips. A Carrion Ghoul let out a miserable shriek and was instantly eliminated.

While attacking, Ye Anran grumbled angrily, “You’re just some newly awakened pieces of trash! How dare you act wild in front of your daddy? Watch me beat you all to death!”

“What’s wrong? Convinced now? Once I wipe you all out, maybe when the chief arrives, he won’t scold us but instead reward us for our merits!”

Xie Qingling was momentarily stunned but quickly joined in the cleanup.

Individual Carrion Ghouls were easy to deal with basically, one strike was enough to finish one off.

Though groups of Carrion Ghouls were a bit more troublesome, with the help of the skeletons, they were quickly suppressed.

In a short time, the situation in the teaching building reversed. The humans, who had been overwhelmed and gasping for breath, now gained the upper hand.

The more Ye Anran fought, the happier she became. It suddenly occurred to her that they might be able to resolve the incident before the chief arrived.

If they could eliminate all the Carrion Ghouls, the chief wouldn’t know what had happened, and he definitely wouldn’t hold them accountable, right?

With this thought, Ye Anran instantly felt reassured and no longer panicked. She even found time to remind Xie Qingling, “Hurry up! The chief and the others will probably be here soon. If we finish before they arrive, you might even get a commendation.”

Xie Qingling also quickened her pace.

Before long, only about a dozen Carrion Ghouls remained in the teaching building.

Victory was within sight.

But at that moment, one of the Carrion Ghouls suddenly stopped.

Soon, all the remaining Carrion Ghouls halted, ceasing their frenzied attacks and instead gathering around one particular Carrion Ghoul.

Seeing that the situation was hopeless, they no longer chattered among themselves but silently surrounded the one in the center.

In the next moment, the central Carrion Ghoul grabbed one of its companions, opened its enormous mouth, and devoured another Carrion Ghoul.

In the blink of an eye, the Carrion Ghoul that had consumed its companion doubled in size!

It then devoured a second ghoul, its body swelling even further and sprouting more arms.

Then a third…

Xie Qingling’s expression changed, and she immediately shouted, “Not good, stop it quickly!”
